I found a Dell Optiplex 3010 w/ an i5 2400, 8gb ram, and a 250gb HDD for FREE because the company was upgrading their computers. I then put a Rosewill arc 450w PSU ($35), the same RX 570 4gb ($90) in the video, a 240GB Kingston SSD ($30), and a Gigabyte wifi/bt pcie 1x slot ($35). The total cost was $190 and I've been pretty happy with the performance. The only thing it struggles with is multitasking which really takes a hit at the performance but gaming alone is great and chrome is lightning fast.

Hey guys, I totally suggest you guys use UCW like Oz is showing you in this great video. But, if you can't afford it, don't fret! Be sure to remember to check your local Facebook Marketplace/craigslist/offerup/etc. listings for Optiplex machines like these. You can find them for pretty cheap, most of the time around $50. Add in the EVGA PSU($40), RX 570($60-70), and either the i7-2600($60-70) ...OR... the intel Xeon e3-1230/e3-1240 ($40) and you're in the game. For those of you playing at home, that is a total investment of ~$190-230! Even if you have to add ram, that's still in the ballpark of ~$250 to get into PC gaming.

If you want a three fan GPU and don’t mind a little case moding, you can remove the lower drive bays. A GTX 1060 or equivalent GPU is your limit, a 1070 is bottle necked on the CPU side. Also putting a 140mm fan in the front of the case is also helpful for lower temps.
    Optiplex 9020 mt w/i7 16gb ram
    GTX 1050 Ti 8gb
    1TB ssd
    850w modular gold PSU
    140mm fan
The only thing I had to purchase was the 9020 ($80) and the ssd $(90), the rest I used from my pc parts pile. In the end works great for a hodgepodge of parts. Will use this case in my future Ryzen build because why not, a bit of newer age retro can’t hurt. Besides older pre built cases are bomb proof and smaller, works well for folks doing LAN parties. New mid towers run $40-$100 depending on your flavor, a used Optiplex case can be as low as $10 cause it’s old. The money saved can go towards a really powerful sleeper and no one would be the wiser.

A few things. As a guy that has done a TON of optiplex machines, some come with an 8 pin dell only connection on the motherboard, and some have a small 24 pin connector. There are adaptors for both. If you try to upgrade the RAM they can be picky sometimes but it can be done with a little bit of effort. You will be happy either way. Optiplex machines are great and I truly think the MT case is classy and simplistic. I've always loved MT optiplex machines, just know you may have some hiccups when building one up.

Hey, my first PC build was based on one of these - an Optiplex 7010! I detailed it (way too much) here: imgur.com/gallery/HTBYi
I also think it's worth mentioning a few things based on my experience:
    - You can make a GPU well over 10.5" fit by removing the HDD cage (drill out the rivets)
    - Longer GPUs will block the USB 3 header on the 7010/9010 - I had to solder a right-angle connector to the motherboard to get it to fit
    - The fan headers are proprietary on many of the mobos, so you'll have to make/buy adapters if you want to use a new fan or cooler or something
Glad to see these things are still being used though - I've switched out almost every part on my build, but I'm still on the 7010's mobo and i7-3770

The downside is that those specific dell versions are also more expensive so it may end up costing the same in the end.

The only way the I7 would be better is if its the K series and if you could overclock but being a prebuilt no such luck. But you'll need an extra 150 in your budget to get that one There are other more affordable ones though and if you can acquire the computer for less as a barebones or from a College surplus Wearhouse then it could be a great option.

One of the - if not best - budget buyers' guide out there! I love to buy/upgrade/flip pcs and learnt so much over the years from yourself and others! Thanks.

Learned is the generally accepted way of spelling it in the United States and Canada, while the rest of the English-speaking world seems to prefer learnt for now

you can laugh but.. these things are no joke.
a year or two back bought a pallet of these i7 dells from a e-cycler for 80 each. also a pack of used 580's from a miner for 90 each and got some new evga 450br's for 25. ebayed my i7 chips and bought cheaper e3 xeons. worked out to 150 each and they work great, still running strong in 1440p gaming in 2019. entire family runs them.
if you have an electric drill its pretty easy to remove the front drive bays so any gpu length will fit. just drill out the rivets on the front and bottom of the case, and yank those suckers out.

I did the same thing last year Oz, I bought a HP Elite, i5 3.2 QuadCore for £100 ($130) on Amazon, 8gig of RAM etc... I bought a Nvidia GTX 1650 4gig card and it slotted in. (roughly $60 on Amazon secondhand)
Fortnite runs at about 50fps, Battlefield 5 runs at roughly 40-50fps on 720 resolution, medium/high settings.....CHEAP gaming PC's work.
    Nice video mate

Interesting vid man! I've already been running an i7 2600 for a couple of years now and was wondering if there's something I could do to stream with it. I've been using a GT 730 for the longest time and this vid got me considering upgrading my graphics card. Cheers man.

The best power supply for this is a EVGA 500 to 600 watt power supply. I had purchased another power supply and it was too big to fit inside the power supply housing. Just a friendly reminder if you going be building around an optiplex system.

QUESTION: I just built my younger cousin a PC with an i5 3570k, Z77V-LK Mobo, Cryorig H7 cooler, 4x4GB 1600 CAS 9 DDR3 ram kit, and a RX 580 8GB, 1TB HDD, 650W 80+Gold PSU. My question is that he wants to stream, would upgrading to a 3790k be strong enough to stream or should he upgrade to a Ryzen 2700? How much better performance would that get him?

I cheaped out on my PSU, got the 500W Evga. Otherwise, it's an i7-4770 Optiplex 9020, and just ordered an ssd and the Nitro+ 8GB RX 570.

I have the 790 w/ i5 2400 but gonna scoop up i7 2600k.. Everyone says OC isn't possible on these units. Not sure if he was trolling but someone said they had luck with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. If possible, you wouldn't be able to change the voltages but even so it should hit 4.4GHz. I'll letcha know if I have any luck.

When you got the Dell tower, was it working? Thanks & great upgrade & video! Also, would you get a little better performance out of the CPU with a better fan or cooler/fan?🤔 Thanks

i7 2600 is actually bad for streaming, I know because I've tested 3770+1060 6GB. You're actually stream using the rx470 by selecting amd encoder. Anyway, great vid oz.
