Thank you for this. I took my dog to the animal hospital thinking something was seriously wrong. They told me about this and your impression is exactly what my dog did. My mind is at ease. I will keep an eye on it but glad to know it's common.
Thank you for mentioning some dogs freak out cause mine do and nobody ever mentions it.... they get anxiety whenever one of them does it 😭😩 I started doing this technique making them breathe from their mouth and its helped them out a lot!!!! They're now relaxed when they do it cause they know I'll quickly be able to help them stop it.
Omg i literally thought i was witnessing my dog die this morning. I was telling my husband to take him to the hospital bc it seemed like he was in full on respiratory distress. This helps calm my mind, i just don't wanna go thru that level of panic again. I thought i was going to have a heart attack
Thank you so much for your calm and informative video! I wish I found this before the countless vets visits and tests, none of which have yielded answers. Not once was reverse sneezing suggested!
my 1 yr old male chihuahua does that.. i was so worried that it might be asthma or something. i also rub his neck and back without research i just thought it was the right thing to do is to calm him down i so glad i saw this video before i started panicking after all the videos i saw on youtube bt im still getting a vet to make sure its not anything worse.
I'm so glad I've seen this as my 20mth old Jack Russell has been doing this most of today he seems much better now i was going to take him to the vets totally put my mind at rest thanks .
Okay I'm glad you explained this. My jack russell did this yesterday and I thought he was choking, but thankfully it's stopped after a few second. But I'm glad I found this video also because I was honestly getting very worried.
My husky was just doing it so we called the local vet and I was just petting him to calm him down bc it has down it before, but this will help for future times, thank you.
Thank you so much for this video, i will be showing my mam, because our princess shitzu have had a few episodes like this in her 18months of life but last night it was really scrry and even though she was back to normal quite quickly my poor mam was in a terrible state and it broke my heart.as poppy is her little fur baby. I found with our dog i pick her up and over my shoulder like a baby and it seem to stop nearly stright away.. we went outside with her to give her some fresh air, trouble was it was So cold and wind it took all of our breath away so that wasn't a good idea for us. But thank you once again, i know this will put my mam's mind at rest Sooo much :)
Thank you Dr. Wedderburn! Between your explanation of the reverse sneeze and Dr. Karen Becker's explanation, I got a ton of information that petmd just doesn't cut it. I've got to say that I love both of your examples/mimics of the reverse sneeze (although Dr. Becker's was a little better than yours). I have always dreamed of being in veterinary care and you made learning a lot easier and fun. Thank you again. From, Shelton, Washington, USA
My 9 year old 1.4 kg Yorkie (as seen in my pic) she has always done this, but is now doing it more often. It's usually from excitement, especially if she notices actions I make that lead to a treat (dogs are smart like that hehe) I usually just put her in her room and put up her doggy gate for a bit so she calms down.
Both of my dogs do this especially when they're playing or sniffing excessively. We refer it to "overheating their sniffer" lol I usually try to calm them down to let the episodes pass.
thanks for the explanation, my dog does it when he elevates his head to high to eat a biscuit, i would try to distract him or lower the biscuit so he won't elevate his head to high. Now i can calm down knowing now that its nothing to worry about and also knowing what to do.
My 13 y o lab does this thing where she makes loud exhalations through her nose. It lasts for around one min and does make her anxious. There is no jerking like in a sneeze or reverse sneeze. We had a choc lab that had an obvious nasal tumor, and he never did this. It's pretty obvious that there is something irritating the nasal passages.
Thank you for this. My dog did it numerous times early this morning. I just calmed her like she was having a panic attack and she was fine, each time. Now I know it’s nothing serious.
I just got two 8 year whippets and one of them does it all the time, i took the girls to the vet right aftet I adopted them and i thought the vet made up the term reverse sneezing! The first time I saw Nina do it I thought it was some kind of seizure. It was scary. Thanks for the tips
I took my yorkie to the vet this week with this problem .They never told me exactly what the problem was, been googling away to get info. My dog got an injection and is on antibiotic for five days at the cost of 70 euro!!!!!!!
My lab does this when he gets in trouble. He sits away from me (putting himself in timeout) and starts doing this. I thought it was his way of sniffling and being dramatic.
Hi Dr. Wedderburn - could you talk a bit about when dogs gulp, lick their lips and (mine at least) wants to go out every 2 minutes? My black lab does it maybe once or twice a year for as little as 1/2 hour up to 3-4 hours. She responds to me saying her name, will drink water, will go for a walk - in other words, it's not a seizure of any type nor acid reflux (although I'm not a vet so I can only say it isn't from what I've read). I asked my vet today when I took Emmer in for her wellness check and lyme vaccine - she wasn't sure either. Thanks very much. I appreciate it.
My Jack Russell always reverse sneezes when she's sleeping, so she will wake up from it. She always gets very scared and I try to calm her down, after a few minutes it usually goes away.
DOES YOUR MIN PIN HAVE ONGOAING reverse sneezing until she releases thing snot? Multiple times every day? My Min Pin is 12 yrs old, and shes been reverse snorting since April 2021, snots hang out a nostril, one at a time, but they rotate so cant isolate it to one side or other. Began April 2021, snot was clear, thin, water link. October Vet prescribed steroids, antibiotics, nothing changed. Jan different Vets office examined, Lilly is in perfect health, up beat, tail always wagging, but even Vets nose drops and other meds didnt provide long term relief. The took to the imaging hospital for a scoping consult, again that Vet said shes in perfect health, her blood work was perfect, sees nothing to make them think it's cancer, and recommended a $4,500 nasal scope procedure because an it allows the Vet to see details & biopsy if something was found. Begore doing that; Im thinking it could be food allergy, all Vets said sure its possible, but Im looking for Min Pin owner's opinions. Thanks
Off topic of sneezing..does anyone know what repeated swallowing/gulping in dogs indicates? Is it acid reflux and does anyone know how to relieve it? Thank you
My puppy seems to be blowing his nose, every time he'll blow and push white substance out his nose, I assume its milk because he rushes when drinking out of a bottle
Thank you! I was so worried and was about to rush my dog to the vet emergency room but then she stopped. So scary! Can food allergies cause extra mucus etc?
What about that video on Facebook where that dog is crying on someones grave stone. Can someone please tell me if the dog was actually feeling emotion or was it reverse sneezing?
Thank you very much, my dog has recently been doing it along with actually sneezing a lot , I think he has allergies to cologne and household products and dust! What would you advise? Antihistamines ? As he’s sneezes have increased a lot in the last week. Thanks
good video, my pug gets very panicked when it happens, and i do see a pattern of excitement triggering it, unfortunately when i plug his nose he is so stubborn i worry he will pass out before breathing through his mouth.
Car Zone o I have a beaglier ( beagle & King Charles caviler) he goes it sometimes. I’ve massage floor the throat gently and it stopped then the next time he did it a while later days / weeks. I have to gently hold his nose closed and close one nostril. That didn’t work so I opened his mouth and he has a piece of food there and I got it. It was chewed and almost down.
Can they do it on purpose? My Chorkie does it softly in the morning when she wants her hugs; more loudly when she wants out; really loud when she is headed to the park. I thought it was talking. Should I buy a harness rather than her collar? Thanks for the explanation.
Hey, the first dog i had started to do this when she was like 5 and i thought it was weird but did a lil research and found the reverse sneeze and that it wasn't harmfull, so i didn't do anything about it, then we got another dog while she was still alive, and he started doing it around one year later (for long periods of time), then she died and we got another dog, and because we began to suspect it was something contagious we kept them apart until the puppy had every vaccine needed, but she also started doing it like 2 years later, it is now very apparent that it is in deed something contagious, and everytime we take them to the vet they say they're ok without even doing any studies even thought we told them that we believe it's a virus, what do you think it may be??
It's frightening isn't it! I've stopped using household sprays and cleaning products as my pooches started when I started using all these antibacterial sprays. Goodness knows what's in these products! Hope it all settles ☺️
Jeez I didn't realise he was going to give a demonstration 😂👌

Alex Taylor Ik because I thought it was something bigger
Bobby Rascal uh ok but still
Me too i was so scared
Me too...started to panic like crazy😪
Thank you for this. I took my dog to the animal hospital thinking something was seriously wrong. They told me about this and your impression is exactly what my dog did. My mind is at ease. I will keep an eye on it but glad to know it's common.

Wow! Thanks for the info. The gently pinching of the nose to force him to breathe out of his mouth worked perfectly.
thank you so much for this explanation ... this was so helpful and I really appreciate it! Thanks Dr. Pete!!!

Thank you, HouseMyDog! My Shih Tzu puppy was doing this yesterday and I was worried. Glad to know there’s nothing to worry about
Thank god we have you here. This channel uploading this stuff.
How do you know if it’s reverse sneezing or tracheal collapse?
Thank you so much for your calm and informative video! I wish I found this before the countless vets visits and tests, none of which have yielded answers. Not once was reverse sneezing suggested!
Thank you so much, this answered all my questions and calmed me down, I first thought it was a small seizure. He is a daschund.
Thank you so much for this!!!! I have been terrified thinking my Sharpei was choking, grateful to know what this is.

I like these reverse videos!

Good video. Freaked me out first time it happened, but I learned about the nostril bit and that sorts her. Though it's rare anyhow.

What about if my dog has reversed sneezing and a collapsed trachea? Can that be dangerous?
my dog for the first time done this and it’s been all night we didn’t sleep. She still doing it this morning don’t know what to do

hello sir, i am very like your video, thanks for sharing this, keep it up, God bless.
Does it affect their ability to breathe while it’s happening? I worry my dog is going to pass out or something.
My dog had been doing it alot today. I see good nose spasming when he is done

my poodle just did this a few minutes ago and scared the shit out of me i thought she was dying😥
I think this may be what my dog has but its more a snorting noise. Would that be the same thing?
Since my Yorkie doesn't shed, can the loose fur from our shedding dogs be the cause of her reverse sneezing?
What about that video on Facebook where that dog is crying on someones grave stone.
Can someone please tell me if the dog was actually feeling emotion or was it reverse sneezing?
Is this different than a collapsed trachea?

is it disease or normal thing in dogs. my beagle having reverse sneezing and i feel very sad during that sneezing time.

Bev Knapton yes you should buy her a harness. If thing press on the threat it can trigger reverse sneezing.
She's a Chokey 🤣
