Reverse sneezing can happen to a Boston Terrier at any age. If a dog becomes overexcited, has an environmental allergic reaction, or gulps his food down quickly, he may have a fit of reverse sneezing. During this event, nasal secretions fall onto the soft palate, causing a closing of the windpipe. This closure results in a wheezing sound. The windpipe will reopen quickly, especially if the dog remains calm during the attack.

tysm i thought my dog was dying 😭
Same😭😭
My pit/lab mix does it all the time and I found that holding him somewhat still and rubbing under his neck works wonders (not scratching, rubbing)
Same😢
Me too!
samee 😭
Just happened to my dog now, and this came up when trying to research what the hell I witnessed. This video made me feel much better. THANK YOU
You are welcome!
my dog scared the SHITT out off mee🙄😩
I literally just did the same thing... My dog does this sometimes but has been doing it on and off today and is still in an episode right now so I decided to google it and found this!!!!
Thought my dog was dying last night rammed my fingers down it’s throat and everything on my knees holding her in the road going breath damn u breath! Just a normal response to a normal situation it seems.
Omg same!! Our dog woke us all up from this just a few mins ago 😫 so scaryyy
🥺🥺 i cried after seeing my dog doing like this. I thought he was having serious problem. But now i'm relaxed. Thankyou 😭❤️
THANK GOD FOR THIS. I was hysterical on the way to the doggy hospital at 3am when I watched this. I had to pull over and calm myself down even after realizing this is what it was. Thank you so much man you have no idea how much this helped me
Imagine the first time you witnessing this from your Boston being after her being diagnosed with epilepsy, initially from noticing her have a seizure... We freaked out since it was the first seizure we observed but our other dog made no reaction whatsoever so we believe it was unlikely the first...
@@jaspermaster7676 same, my dog just recovered from her elevated blood that cause her seizure and weak bone, so i freaked out the hell of me when i see her and the situation glad it's nothing serious 😩
Lmaooo
This happened to my Beagle for about 5 minutes last night and it scared me to death. He was pitiful. Thanks for posting this. Very informative and calming.🖤🖤
I Also hace a Beagle, happens like 1 or 2 a month for a couple times a day
my beagles used to do that often and it scared me too !
Our family had our TAZ for 14 years. He reversed-sneezed every so often the older he got. The method I used for him was to roll him over slowly onto his back and rubbed his belly. It worked every time. It calmed him down. My thought process was to help him open the pallet a bit. As I said, it worked every time. Much better than holding him. Holding his ribs was a great method also.
My dog does this almost daily. And sometimes it lasts for 5 minutes. I pat his back and sides and talk soothingly to him to try to calm him down. It doesn't worry me bc I was raised with Boston terriers.
My dog does this almost weekly too. And just yesterday she did like 5 in a row over a period of 5 minutes.
My dog does this almost daily as well. I know this comment is from a year ago so I was wondering if you have done anything else like talked to a vet about it or if it stopped. Just curious! I wanna help my pup haha
My dog does this daily, usually after he gets his treat.
My dog is 9 years old Jackrussel/Shitzu mix. shes been doing this daily for about 8 years. lasts about 20 seconds to a minute.
My pomeranian does this when she looks up at me while trying to smell the food I have in my hands
Thank you so much! My Miniature Bull Terrier cross fox terrier puppy started doing this a few days ago, and I thought it was either allergies (since she is allergic to grass, she gets spotty, red and itchy since she's mostly white and has pink skin), anxiety or a medical problem. When she does that she gets sad so I hug her and give her a treat or play. Thank you, you've helped everyone not freak out! 💜
Just done these! Holding dog helped calm them but holding one nostril for 15 seconds stopped the reverse sneezing instantly- thank you! ♡
Our Gracie had cancer in her leg but we were lucky had tried a new treatment and it did the trick very thankful,
I've become agitated ever since my dog got sick and lately he got reverse sneezes. Im searching for many referrence for my dog but this one made me breathe fine and just dont panic. Thank you for this video 😊
I had seen this video years ago and I’ve always remembered it but I’d never 3xperienced it with my dog….until just now @ 245am. My dog was laying on my chest and stood up and starting gasping (or so it sounded). I told myself not to panic bc I’d seen this and knew he was ok but man is it scary. I got him on the bed so I could sit up and held him tightly like u showed, it stopped quickly! It came back a few seconds later but not nearly as bad, so this time I held a little longer. He’s now sleeping peacefully and I am so thankful!!
YEA BRO. GOOD LOOKIN OUT ON THE INFO. I WILL KEEP WATCH FOR FREQUENCY.
Thank you so much. My dog started doing this after I put pine-sol on the garage floor, and it scared the bejeebus out of me today, I thought he was choking. I squeezed his sides whenever an episode started, and that calmed him down and helped the sneezing stop. He still has a little snort every now and then, but not the full blown choking sound anymore, thank goodness.
Whew I was scared for my Chihuahua. Thank you!
This just happened to my dog I was so worried 🥺 I’m glad I found this video
Thank you so much for this. I'm here to search what's it called. My dog just had this kind of episode few minutes ago for the first time in 7 years. I didn't do any of the things you've said as it was my first, instead I gave him an anti-allergy medicine it worked. 💝
I literally was so scared when my dog did this randomly for the first time tonight. I was googling everything trying to figure out what it was and got even more scared. Thanks for making this video and letting us pet parents know what it actually is!
It’s happening to my husky/malamute right now! It scared the crap out of me! I’ve always had dogs my whole like and have never seen this! Thank you for this video!
This video makes me feel alot better. My dog also has problems with occasional seizures so almost anything gets me freaked anymore....
All but 1 of my dogs does this, at first I though they were having seizures, but it sounds like they are congested too. I noticed my dogs do it when they are excited and during allergy season...
My miniature daschund does this when she is excited.first time I freaked out! Went to vet.vet told me was reverse sneezing.she is over 11years old now and I always pick her up and just calm her with soft words.
Thank you! I have two Boston’s but one has a much more smushed face like a Frenchie. She seems to do it more frequently maybe a once month. But I just comfort her and that’s it she’s good to go right after.
My older Boston has done it but not nearly as much. I definitely think their breathing palette has something to do with frequency.
This just to my dog about an hour ago, and I thought that he was having a seizure. It really scared my family. Thank you for this video!!!
You are welcome!
this is an AMAZING VIDEO. Thank you SO much.
Thank you 🙏🏻 for this information!
Your welcome!
thank god i saw this video😭😭 i honestly thought what was wrong with her but thank you for this!!!
I'm glad it helped!
idk if my dog's having a reverse sneeze but it is the closest thing to it and he does it every wee hours in the morning. I honestly don't know what to do til I found this video, thank you very much!
Thank you n great video ❤
Thank you for this video. It was most helpful.
Love your content!!!
It has broadened my knowledge on my baby.
Thank you!
I thought my sisters dog was having a panic attack or heart attack, but thank god I calmed her down doing this without knowing 😭 thank you for this video
my dog does it whenever we come back from a vacation haha. she gets so excited to find out we didn’t leave her! 🥺 also, we hold her snout and try to calm her down and that has always worked for us!
thanks for sharing
My dog started doing this today! Was really worried. She calmed down from petting her. Also, I the one nostril breathing is a technique used in yoga
I just love Boston terriers they are my favorite dog breed. I used to have 2 Bostons and my girl Marlee had these but my male Jack he never had them. I miss my Boston's they passed away years ago but I would love to have another Boston in the future.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thank you, my boxer started doing this on my lap today and it’s the first time I’ve seen her do it ever (she’s 7)
😊
Thank you. My Cockapoo is doing it this morning.
Thank you so much for posting 🙏🏼 it can be really scary if your dog suddenly starts doing this...🐶 thanks to „Bella“ for explaining as well 🥰 she is such a cutie ❤️ greetings to you all from Austria 🤗
You are welcome!
Thank you so so so much we didn’t know what to do as this helped you are amazing
I'm glad it helped!
My beagle would do this sometimes. I figured she had something in her nose when she did it, so I would block her nose for a split second, then let her huff it out. Worked every time. No matter how much she tried to paw me. She looked begrudgingly grateful. It always reminded me of a toddler trying to keep their mom from blowing their nose.
I had a Basset Hound who would reverse sneeze. We’d never seen this with our previous dogs. We talked to the vet about it, and he was able to replicate what it sounded like himself, which was pretty funny at the time.
It’s been so long that I don’t remember what he recommended. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the info. I’ve enjoyed your videos.
Thank you Jenuwen. I appreciate the support. Anything you would like to see in an upcoming video? An issue or question you have about Boston’s?
Tanks I just woke up and my dog was doing exactly this 😮 and found this video.
My Chihuahua/pug does this only when I walk in the house and he gets too excited to see me again. Very odd
Excitement can cause it. Your chihuahua/pug really really loves you!
Same with mine
So do my bulldogs lol
Same here! My chihuahua gets really excited and jumps towards me lol, im glad I found this video
same!! our chi honks when we come home or when we break out his favorite treat. sometimes when he’s scolded too
This helped so much. Omg.
I have a cairn terrier and she does this anytime she goes for a walk in the field or shes playing in the really big field going crazy, it made me feel better thank you
My dog does this almost daily..
@@crystalwood3395 maybe bring her to a vet or something cause I dont think its normal every day, she could have mites in her nose? Make sure to check regularly if the nose is bleeding.
My dog Clarence reverse sneezes all the time. I do this routinely and this works for Clarence (your mileage may vary). He is a male Beagle-ish/mutt rescue. Here is my "Computer Mouse" method:
1. Most importantly, help him relax. He may be scared. Not only scared that something is happening he can't control, but that he is doing something wrong. Shower him with praise and love in a very soft voice right next to his face/ear. And why not? He is indeed, a very good boy.
2. Get behind him. Put his snout in your hand like it's a computer mouse with your palm on top. Position it so that the flat of your finger will cover one of his nostrils - like your finger reaching for the mouse button. Hold his snout closed by closing your fingers and make sure no air goes in or out of one of the nostrils. During this time, never stop doing step 1. Your goal here is to force any air he gets or expels through only the one open nostril. 90% is not good enough. ALL air (within reason because you don't ever want to hurt or scare him either).
3. With your other hand, rub his throat in long strokes. I think it's mainly to extend it as much as possible. And again, don't forget to keep doing step 1. All.The.Time.
4. He will start to resist a little at first, but hold firm. Then he will obviously want out. Release him, but don't stop petting him and praising him. If he continues reverse sneezing, do it again, but this time cover the other nostril.
5. Keep repeating this, alternating nostrils until it goes away. Never close both nostrils. Be patient. Sometimes it can take a while. Instead of eyeing the clock, look at your technique and the dog's response. Try something different - less pressure, amount of air sealed, time, etc. Have someone else try it. Maybe he/she is not relaxing enough with you. Don't be offended. Trying being the one that can't stop sneezing without your typical UA-cam user's help.
This method works 100% of the time for Clarence. It's a mixture of the great advice I've seen here at the University of UA-cam along with trial and error because with Clarence, reverse sneezing is a feature - not a bug. The Vet said it's unusual at his frequency, but nothing harmful. And I actually think it's made us even closer because face it, this is a weird bond.
Mike! Thanks this is really helpful. Thanks for sharing
Thank you
My Medium Sized Rescue started snorting and I was terrified! But she’s okay, she has a large nose though, and now I’m worried my 13 yr old Bichon will start. But now I know how to help, This was a good video.
Thank you! And if it is ever something you are truly concerned with I would call your vet to have your dogs checked out.
Our Boston Baxter, who has now passed, got the reverse sneezing when he got too excited because we were going to go for a walk.
Thank you
This just happened to my boy tonight for the first time. it really scared me. Thanks for your video.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you, our beautiful little whippet was just doing this and I found your video. Thank you very much 🙏🏼 💕
You’re welcome!
I’m glad the video helped
My dogs being doing this for a while now…. And shes a maltese, so thank you for this.
My 5 month old Boston does it pretty much every morning after he eats or as we get outside. (Started a few weeks ago once we recovered from kennel cough) Absolutely terrifying. Been to the vets and didn’t get any feedback. They said that they can check it out during neutering. Some advice I found which helps to our little guy is to open his mouth so he can inhale through it and usually it stops sneezing.
Kate Maksimchuk dang. Bella gets them very sportically she is spayed but not sure if that helped lessen the number of episodes or not. Thanks for the tip of opening your Boston’s mouth. Hopefully your little Boston grows out of it!
Thankyouuu!!🥺❤️
They are the cutest dogs.
Thanks bosten
Thank you I started crying thinking he was choking or something😭🙏🥰
😭 thank you!!!
My dog have a revers sneezing i was so scared
My dogs both suffer from reverse sneezing, one is a lab/x mix with a deep chest area, the other is a samoyed/collie mix with a long body, both have been abused before i got them home.
My vet told me that reverse sneezing oftens comes from them not sinking their spit right when exited/scared. I believe thats right cause when the samoyed mix gets spooked by someting he risk a reverse sneeze cause his spit go down his windpipe.. its so scary the first time you witness a reverse sneeze, i felt so helpless and were trying to hold the nose and make them open their mouth to check if the dogs were choking on something.. but after watching videos i now know the best way to help my boys if needed. 🐕👌🏻
Sorry for bad grammer, english is my third language, so feel free to correct my spelling :)
Tibbe Tabbi your English is exceptional
Good job and you type better than most English people type
Much Love and God Bless
You have a good English actually.😊
Thanks guys :)
The AKC and WebMD have similar (to each other) recommendations: "A common remedy is to hold the dog’s nostrils closed for a second and lightly massage its throat to calm him. Lightly blowing in his face may also help. This should cause the dog to swallow a couple of times, which will usually stop the spasm of the reverse sneeze. Getting the dog in a cool area or outside with fresh air while trying to verbally calm him can also be useful."
Thank you so much for doing this video. Very alarming for us when our pup started doing this, so it helps to have something to calm us down :)
You’re welcome 😉 thanks!
I thought my chug was just having a severe asthma attack. I was so freaking stressed 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩
😥
Thanks, I never heard about this. My dog has bouts of unexplained anxiety and randomly does this, its scary, she looks scared. I gently blow in her face and tell her its ok🧡
My beagle just did this after our long (for her) walk, thanks for the tips 🙏🏻
Happy to help!
Thank you so much!! My big dog just did this and I got so scared 😭
Happened to my ChiGi last night and I was scared AF! As far as pollutant, I have a lot of plants so I would've thought the opposite. Thanks for the video!
Omg I just got so scared jumped out of my bed real quick all scares , thx 🙏🏾 I really thought it was serious

You're welcome!
oml ty so much my dog started doing this 1 hour ago and I took him outside and tried to calm him down I thought he was having a seizure i’ve been up all night watching him sleep so he won’t die on me thanks lol
My favorite dog ever
😊
My Bichon Frise does this I think its because we’re coming into winter and the cold weather but good to know she’s okay 🥺
Great advice! When our Bostons do that we hold their chests & rub their throats. It does seem to help.
Thanks!
This is what I did! All three of my babies it helped.
Our dog experienced this just a few mins ago omfg it was so scary 😭 thank God he's fine now i think. I hope this mever hapoens again cause it's really so worrying huhu
I really freaked out! Thought my dog has dyspnea or something. Thank you for this video
I'm glad the video helped!
omfg thank you so much for this video my beagle started doing this yesterday and i thought he was choking 😭 he did it again today and i think it may be due to getting mowed grass up his little nose.
We have a 13 yr old mix dog that does this like 4-5 times a day. She's been to several specialist and spent thousands of dollars for them to find out what was wrong with her, and, well, nothing. As tends to have it more during the heavier pollen seasons (spring/fall).
God Bless you sir
I've ALWAYS wondered what that was!!
Happen everyday to my boston, and a lot of breathing things. They are made wrong, but lovely dogs. I love my puma so much
It happend to my dog so many times and he just did it at night waking me up and im looking if i can help him with it
Same happened with my dog.
Mine keeps doing it repeatedly this has happened to him repeatedly for 10 seconds at a time in a 5 minute time span I hope he’s fine
Thank you for this. We just rushed our doggo to the vet this morning. It freaked us out so much. 😭😭😭
😥
Oh gosh my miniature JRT does this at least once, maybe twice a day since we've moved house. She is 3 years old and when she has an episode, she is absolutely fine afterwards, (I rub her throat). I will mention it on my next visit just for peace of mind. Thanks for the video 😀
You're welcome!
Thank you 🙏🏾
You are welcome!
My Chihuahua had this today. Had this another time too, took her outside, and seemed to help but other than that not much, thanks for easing my mind
My 12 year old lab is mixed with boston terrier. I experienced this for the first time yesterday when I let her out in the backyard. I freaked out so bad that my neighbors came rushing. Luckily, they knew what was happening and reassured me that she wasn't dying. I felt really embarrassed but I was also happy that it was nothing serious 😅
I’m happy it was nothing serious too. When Bella did it the first time I thought she was choking.
@@BostonTerrierSociety Lol, I was ready to give an arm and a leg if it meant that my baby survived 🤣. She now has little reverse sneezes here and there but when it happens, I just use your method. It works! So thank you so much for the tips 🙂
Tysm
You're welcome!
My dog sounds like a pig when this happens, superloud!
Yess same
Wet their nose trust me
sameee so it sounds different from this and is abit scarier
@@stacylarge5636 wtfffff they would inhale water and choke?
@@annipsy2185 not a dunk a wipe lol
thank you for this. my husky did it and it woyld scare me but when my small chihuahua does it, it really freaks me out cuz her body is so tiny and it seems like shes chocking so i always pat there backs or massage their throats. im glad i seen this
My 10 yr old pug Maggie has done this her whole life. It's not dangerous doesn't seem to bother her. Now today she started with a bad cough, might have to see Dr if this continues.
Update on my pugs cough, she has had the reverse sneezing her whole life,(10) now she has a collapsed trachea, not good. It's common Always watch for signs in pugs and Boston's, better to catch it early.
Thank you so much for this video! Very helpful and informative!
Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate the support.
Now you tell me! We had a Boston growing up and have one now. My first one did it all the time- especially when he was excited. Just out of instinct I learned to cover his nose. Worked every time- just for like ten seconds or so. Would force them too to breath out of mouth since when it happens they usually close their mouth.
🤷♂️
I have a Chihuahua and she’s reverse sneezed every once in a while (not too often, mostly in spring or temperature change) since she was about a year old.
It is interesting how each dog is different.
Smaller dogs have a greater tendency to develop collapsed or partially collapsed trachea. My Min Pin Chi mix has experienced the backwards sneezing from seasonal allergies. Recently, however, he's had violent sneezing and reverse sneezing fits accompanied by loads of green/yellow mucus (sorry - TMI!) He even experienced a light bloody nose, which quickly resolved. We tried a course of antibiotics last week but the icky mucus and sneezing fits remain. Going to get him checked this week for nasal mites. Long story not at all short: nasal mites also can be a cause and *must* be treated by a vet.
I had a Boston that was a runt who had health problems & she did that almost every day for any reason. The vet explained it was common but ok. She sounded worse than his dog cause mine had a snort with each sneeze but only lasted 20 - 30 seconds.
There's little bugs that can get in their nose too, which is to consider if you have more than one dog and they are doing this. They just to be removed. I think there's a nasal cleanse you can get as well.
Thanks for the tip
My shih tzu does this. It was terrifying at first so I brought her to vet. The vet to told me that it was reverse sneezing and it was typical to brachycephalic dogs. Apparently it doesn't do any harm to them. I was taught to massage her neck and throat and try blowing on her face.
My 14 year old Jack Russell has been doing this for 2 to 3 years but has stopped suddenly in the last month since giving her Hawthorn Berry. Hawthorn Berry is completely natural, inexpensive and has lots of health benefits for dogs( especially for there heart or a dog with murmur)
thanks for sharing
How many milligrams would you give a Boston Terrier that weights 33 lbs. and 9 yrs. old?????????
