How to repair peeling roadster rear glass window (suction clamps) DIY guide Audi TT Mk1 Convertible

  • Apart from the broken engine the next biggest concern is the roadster's rear window glass peeling from the convertible roof. Luckily along with the sale came all of the necessary equipment to complete the job. I cover the major repair of the droptop's delaminating rear window by using suction cup clamps and also look at the repair of the TT Mk1's rear demister wiring. The suction cup clamps really help with bringing the glass to the fabric and saves you from having to think up of elaborate setups. My example of glass peeling is quite severe but hopefully you catch yours in time so it doesn't get to this stage.
    Make sure you have:
    - suction clamps
    - orange good cleaner
    - a sponge
    - blue tape
    - 3m single step primer
    - 3m window weld or something similar like sikaflex 227
    - soldering iron
    - scalpal or sharp blade
I try and go into as much detail as possible so you'll feel confident when/if (hopefully you don't need to) you need to repair your rear window glass from peeling. I also test it out toward the end to show you that the repair is solid... or not 😜
The repair doesn't take that long and if you get it right the first go you'll be back up and running overnight.

Thanks for watching and glad it's helpful. I have also used this same process for the Mk2 TT where the soft top has two "skins". I think it would be the same with your S5 Cabriolet... Audi made them nicer by making an inner skin to cover the frame. The process worked 👌

Even without a top, I'd enjoy it. My first car was a '54 Austin Healey 100-4 in 1964.. I've wanted a roadster since. My '01baseball version lived in San Diego until I drove it, non stop to OH two years ago. Sometimes it's just fun to sit in it and enjoy the aesthetics.
The center sun visor and dowel to line up the spare tire on the rotor are just two of first class accoutrements I've discovered.
My next project is to install puddle lights on the bottom of the doors which will show the Audi logo. I've not seen any videos doing it with a Dremel to make the rectangle accurate. Thank you again Ian. @@ianpgonzaga

Great video. My Mini Cooper Roadster just dropped the rear window out this past week. I'll be using your video as my template for the fix this weekend. You seem to have the most complete that I've seen. The only thing I'm going to do is completely remove the window to start. It's still held a bit, but I only want to do this once so I will seal the entire window.
As I stated below in my comment to one of the other people the primer is getting difficult to locate but I was able to call the local automotive paint store who actually had it on hand.

    • @ianpgonzaga
      @ianpgonzaga  2 місяці тому

      Thanks John.
That strip is kind of difficult to glue down. If you can then do it but I tried my best and it's mostly peeled off. It doesn't impact the seal though. If you have it right at the glass that extra fabric strip is really just a vanity covr.

I don't know how to apply it since it is still very tigh, honestly I don't even know how to squeeze the glue, it is way tighter that the last leak repair in your video. Thank you very much

Hey there. I think the later models (like the TT Mk2 ) can be done but they're double skinned.
You might have to do the repair when there's some slack in the fabric.

I watched it a few times and still don't quite understand how the clamps actually work.

Thank you! Same method worked for mine, and I didn't find any leak from spray leak test. However the spot leaks after a rainy day. Maybe it is the water actually seeping through the fabric around the area? Do you have any idea on this?
