Thank you for an informative video- I totally understand the tumbler at the beginning: remembering it’s history and seeing the whole process of it’s making in its form and colors...I also have a few pieces that remind me of certain firings and processes. Continue having fun and making beautiful pots.

Thanks so much for posting. I made 10 salad plates after your earlier design. Wasn’t sure I wanted larger plates. But now will try. When I compared the shape to ones I had thrown many years ago, I agree this is a better design. Love your tumbler. It’s good you keep some extraordinary pieces for your own use. So many potters fill their kitchen with their seconds. Well done. Must have missed the kiln unloading video

Hi, I was wondering how you bisque fire your plates? Do you stack them on top of each other, stand them on edge, or do something else? Maybe you don't even bisque fire? Thanks for the help.
Thanks for another great video :-) ... How do you manage glaze fire? You you use any tools to stack them or something? I have how much space they take up in the kilns hehe :-)

I would love to see how you dry, trim(?), bisque fire your plates. I have such a problem with my plates cracking (not ‘s’ cracks) during the bisque fire and I compress the floor of the plate more than you do. Thanks!
On what part of the plate do they usually crack and at what stage?
Matthew Kelly Pottery On the rim toward the middle but it is a straight crack. I do trim a foot ring on the plates and dry them upside down so I think the rims are getting too dry and the pressure of the plate on the rim may be causing the crack. However, I can’t trim the foot ring with a soft rim! Also, the plate floor would sag. The cracks happen during the bisque firing and I lose at least half my plates! Can’t even recycle the clay after the firing! May need to change to a design more like yours. Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
Yes I would assume that the cracks are happening during the trimming and they don’t show up until the bisque firing. You could either try using a foam pad on the bat to trim or try not trimming.

Great demo! Thank you Matthew. I see you do not compress the clay by going back and forth with your rib. I've always been told that without such compression there will be S-cracks for such large flat area. What's the secret of preventing that without doing the "compression" moves?

Since you didn’t run a wire under it after throwing, so how do you get plate off bat.?
Dry slowly and they should "pop" off the bat eventually.
What size bat are you using and since you do not cut the plates off of the bat, how do you keep the plate from either sticking or cracking?
He uses tempered Masonite boards - Matthew has an older video on it.

No I don’t wire them off. My bats are smooth enough that the clay separates easily while drying

Im glad you enjoyed it. The dinner plates are 2.5lbs. The salad plates from the earlier video are 1.5lbs.

Matthew, how long are the add on legs to elevate the wheel?
Mine are adjusted for my height. I like the splash pan to be right at my belt line.
How and what exactly do you use the gage.... it never quite makes any sense from the other camera angles

and thought I had seen you make tumblers but i can't find the video- do you know which video it was that you made the tumblers
I’m not sure I’ve made them on a video. If I have I can’t remember which one either. If I remember I will let you know.

DO you cut off your plates, I have some that cracked because I didn’t cut them from the bat..
No I don’t but I have very smooth clean bats. If you’re bats are smooth then they could have cracked for several other reasons.

Oh my God thank you for saying subconsciously the entire world has lost their minds and they say unconsciously now and it drives me absolutely bat **** crazy! The term is indeed subconsciously not unconsciously unconscious means you're not awake for God sakes LOL
Do you have plate sitters? That's the biggest reason I don't like making plates, they are such space hogs in the kiln. Everybody's gonna ask why you don't cut the plates off the bat. I know but you know they are gonna ask. 😁😁

@Gene Arnold I don’t have plate sitters, sorry I never answered your question. I do have those nice flat advancer shelves though!
Keith, I don’t trim the plate bottoms and the bats will leave a very nice, smooth, even bottom when I let the plates dry until they release from the bat.
