I just started throwing 2 weeks ago, I love it and am very inspired by how easily you make it look, I'm determined to get better with lots of practice and just watching, learning through masters like yourself, appreciate you sharing your craft!
I came across this video by chance and today I killed it at pottery making bowls because of this video!!!’ Thank you!! Can you show us a video of a tall large bowl? Is it the same method?
Hey Matthew, Perfect timing with the large bowl video. We just did it last night in class. Appreciate your expertise and clarity, really helpful for all. Happy potting!😄
Hey! This is really useful! Changing the direction of the wheel and starting from the rim down is a great pointer! Thanks! Liked this instructive video.
You are SO right! I am constantly fighting potters that claim you HAVE to do things in a certain way - or that you CAN NOT do it in another. Thank you Matt for always sharing your amazing skills
Matthew, I have watched many of your videos and have learned so many great tips. I have been doing pottery for over 40 years as a hobby and love it when I learn something new. Thank you so much.
Hi Matthew, Excellent video! I appreciate the detail and the two camera angles. Thank you for sharing your expertise. As a hobby potter it is always terrific to watch your videos and pick up tips. :)
Thank you. I just stumbled across this video having recently started trying to make wider, larger bowls, and this was so useful. You definitely do a few things I haven't seen before...but that bowl looks lovely, so I'm going to give a couple of your ideas a go and see if they help. really appreciate this ad will be watching many more of your tutorials.
Nicely thrown Matt! It makes more sense to start this process from a flatter plain as you are starting with near enough the correct thickness of clay before final shaping whereas if you throw a cylinder then flatten it the clay must stretch to accommodate the flatter shape so you loose wall thickness in the process and the consequences of that are obvious. Logical, practical and economical. Fantastic!
What a great and easy way to throw a platter bowl. I will definitely try this process 😊because it ensures the structural integrity of the piece. Thanks for sharing!😊
I'm glad to see that even the Pro's have the ball of clay slip off the bat once in a while. After opening to a bowl shape when you start the first pull and are pushing the base in quite strongly with the outside hand how do you prevent a bump from forming in the smooth curve on the inside where the wall meets the base? I always end up with a bump that I have to "trim" off by removing clay.
Yea I didn’t clean the bat a tad before throwing it down. Was gonna remove that portion but thought it would actually help, haha. When I push in strongly at the base I’m also aggressively pushing back on the inside. I almost pull more from the inside than the outside.
Matthew: so great to see your video, I am always learning something new. So true that if you start with a wider and lower opening you are already half way there! It reduces the production time considerably, and makes it much more fun. I will have to try to reverse the wheel direction, and see how it works. It looks awesome as you do it! Thank you again for taking the time to share your skills with all of us. 😊
Thank you for sharing the benefit of your years of experience! I'm going to give it a try on my next shallow wide bowl. I love your videos; you make it look so easy and explain it so well.❤jw
Loved watching your video. Can't believe where you got to after 4 pulls. Ill try some of your techniques the next time in the studio. Thank you. My engineer husband will enjoy seeing your process.
Matt, what size was the bowl you threw in this video? love your videos, you are an excellent instructor. kiln openings are awesome. my husband and I hope to get to NC to see one some day
I love your videos and commentary. I've learned a lot from you. I have thought many times that I would like to hold my rib in my right hand and shape. Thank you, I will be trying this.
All of your work is great & I learn a lot from you. My only preference would be to have a smooth floor of the interior. Then, in my opinion, it would match the refinement of the rest of the bowl. I also like the smooth, pleasing way the glaze displays there. The spiral always seems to me to be a cover for not spending the effort to refine the interior bottom. With all due respect.
Will give it a try. I've always tried spreading a tall cylinder with limited success. I also tend to rush along instead of being slow and careful. This method might up my success rate and quality.
Perfect timing for finding this specific video! I’ve thrown a nice pitcher, albeit it’s not very large & I’ll pull a handle tomorrow for it. I attempted to make a bowl for the pitcher to sit in. The bowl was started as a cylinder & of course, it fell. I tried again & it fell again. Sooooooo, either later tonight or sometime tomorrow, I’ll be attempting to throw the bowl like you show here. I hope it’ll work. If it doesn’t, I’ll continue to fail better as I work toward my goal.
Thank you so much Matt for a clear, informative video. I am not an experienced potter but am loving the process and will certainly try this method when in the studio tomorrow. The fact that there are so many different ways to throw, gives me at least some confidence to go ahead and try.
Do you trim these? Wondering how much clay you left at the bottom. Video is very helpful! This is something I've been working on and will try opening with the heel of my hand.
I watched this video about 5 times, then tried throwing a wide, shallow bowl. Not as wide as yours, only 3.5 lb of clay and I chickened out after a bit, but it worked very well. Thank you.
Nice. Do you let it sit a long time before separating from the bat, or do you do a wire cut pretty much at this stage? Seems like it would be quite delicate for some time.
interesting to see another switch the wheel direction. I’ve been throwing for almost 20 years and have always centered right handed, pulled left handed, and shaped back at right handed. For me it was more just that I could never really figure out the pulling right handed though
Matthew - loved your take on throwing this shape. I haven't been as successful at it as I would like to be. I'm definitely going to be incorporating your tips to finally get it. The split videos really help to see what you're doing. How exactly do you prepare the pot to be able to hang it?
Thank you for posting your process, because it illustrates ways in which you are not ‘fighting’ with the clay. (Especially starting with the opening….) Wish me luck 👍
How wide (as thrown) was this wide bowl? I’m getting ready to order my kiln and am vacillating betwee an 8 sided kiln (15” shelves) and a wider 10 sided kiln (20” shelves) kiln. Kiln, wheel and golf cart need to fit in a single wide bay of the garage.
@@user-mc3zq8zl9n mine is 12 inches bisque fired, which I had to do sideways. I have a skutt 614-3. It is very small because I didn't want to deal with the expense of an electrician for a bigger kiln yet. Personally I'd go with the bigger of your two options. That's what I'll do in the future. I love making large pieces. Good luck with whatever you choose!
LIFE CHANGING VIDEO - throwing in reverse, WOAH
So going to try the reverse-wheel trick, so going to fail too!
I just started throwing 2 weeks ago, I love it and am very inspired by how easily you make it look, I'm determined to get better with lots of practice and just watching, learning through masters like yourself, appreciate you sharing your craft!
Great looking bowl. I think it would be really cool if you showed the completely finished piece at the end.
I loooove the bowi!!!!
I just sighed up for pottery yesterday for a 5 wks .starts June 29 from 10:00 to 12:30. Can't wait !
I came across this video by chance and today I killed it at pottery making bowls because of this video!!!’ Thank you!! Can you show us a video of a tall large bowl? Is it the same method?
Hey Matthew,
Perfect timing with the large bowl video. We just did it last night in class. Appreciate your expertise and clarity, really helpful for all. Happy potting!😄
Awesome! Hope it helps
Beautiful as always!
Great as this is one of goals and I’ve been struggling thanks
Good luck!!
Game changer with the reverse shaping tip!!!! Loves it. Thank you so much!
I tried your wheel-reversing technique today and it was a game-changer, thank you so much!
You’re welcome. I love using that technique so much. I was using it earlier this week also!
Learned so much! Thank you!
Thank you! I am coming to Seagrove this year.
Let me know ahead of time to make sure I’m home.
Thanks very much Matthew.
Thanks for this idea, will try this way as so far I've done the up and then out, without much success, will try this way next time I'm in class
Hey! This is really useful! Changing the direction of the wheel and starting from the rim down is a great pointer! Thanks! Liked this instructive video.
Excellent - thank you - I am going to try this out today!
Thanks Matthew! I needed this video big time! I am one of those cylinder people and it has not worked very well for me. Now I think I can do it !
Awesome!!!! I’m super excited for you
Thank you so much! I can’t wait to try it!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
You are SO right! I am constantly fighting potters that claim you HAVE to do things in a certain way - or that you CAN NOT do it in another. Thank you Matt for always sharing your amazing skills
Your textue video sold me on getting a Steve's Tool. Love it and so many compliments on my work.
thank you
You’re welcome. I hope you’re doing well. It’s been a long time. Cheers!
Great tips!
Great video! Great angles! Much appreciated
Thankyou for the great video, I just attempted to do this with a taller cylinder , this definately seems a better method
You’re welcome! There’s no one right way and I’m sure there are those out there who think I do it “wrong” haha
Stunning work!
Matthew, I have watched many of your videos and have learned so many great tips. I have been doing pottery for over 40 years as a hobby and love it when I learn something new. Thank you so much.

Another great video. Thanks for sharing - I'll be giving this a go tomorrow!!
Awesome! Good luck
Loved this approach can’t wait to try! Thanks!

That helps pull that clay from the bottom and not leave the hump on the inside.
Very nice - I too will be trying this out! 😊
Thank you for this video. Lovely bowl and explanation. I am throwing 3kgs currently, so almost at this stage. Can't wait to try it!!!
A great demonstration! Thanks!
Wow. Amazing. Great way of explaining
Great video! Wondering if wire the bowl off now? Thanks.

Beautiful to watch you work! Thankyou for sharing.
Thanks a lot. I only did this once (sort of) with a very wide (+50 cm) bowl. But you inspired me to do this more often. Thanks Matt 🙂
Awesome! Keep up the great work
Beautiful to watch. Love your reverse wheel direction shaping technique. Thanks for posting!
מאד יפה!! לומדת ממך הרבה מאד. תודה hallo from Isarel
You’re welcome!!
thanks for always letting us know how much you're throwing with.. helps with understanding the process
Nicely done!
Thank you. You are so articulate while explaining how to do this. I really appreciate your precision.

very cool. never thought of reversing the wheel like that for shaping although I've done it in the past for adding slip. really great tips, thanks.

this was great, thankyou!
Do you trim these? Wondering how much clay you left at the bottom. Video is very helpful! This is something I've been working on and will try opening with the heel of my hand.
No I don’t trim these unless I make very large ones and the bottom is not flat. The only extra thickness left is at the edge of the bottom
I watched this video about 5 times, then tried throwing a wide, shallow bowl. Not as wide as yours, only 3.5 lb of clay and I chickened out after a bit, but it worked very well. Thank you.
this blew my mind!! WOAH
Makes perfect sense!
Great shape
More split vids! So helpful!!! I'm trying this tomorrow
Awesome! I hope it goes well

I need to learn to make 3 nesting bowls which fit one inside another at the same level. Could you please show me how to do them? Thanks.

Great information
I want to get into this so badly.
excellent! thanks
Thanks a ton!
Amazing 🎉
Just followed your steroids in this video and really happy with the results. Thanks for a great vid!
Very nice. Is there a reason besides shape that you switch between a wood rib and a silicone rib?
Thanks for sharing this! Very helpful. Why do you use a wood rib on the bottom of the bowl when you are centering the clay?
How many lbs did you use? Thanks 🙏
Great bowl
How much clay was it? Thanks
He said it was 4 lbs somewhere at the beginning of the video
4lbs
Love it. You are always encouraging, especially knowing your technique/style comes from a production background 😊
Yea I’ve thrown a bunch of pots and have had time to think about techniques
A year late but THANK YOU for the two camera shots. It’s so frustrating to watch potters center or pull and have no ability to see hand placement.
SUPER HELPFUL !!!!!!!! Thank You for making this tutorial 🌙

I do wish you luck. Go for it!!
Did one your way makes so much sense ... not as nice as yours and will try again tmro for another as my it is my goal for now😊
I made one of these a while back. It turned out great. Too bad I wasn't paying attention to size and it doesn't fit in my tiny kiln 🤦♀️😂
That is funny! 😂
Aww darn.
Oh gee, I have done that once, with great disappointment! 😏 I measure 3 times now...😊
How wide (as thrown) was this wide bowl? I’m getting ready to order my kiln and am vacillating betwee an 8 sided kiln (15” shelves) and a wider 10 sided kiln (20” shelves) kiln. Kiln, wheel and golf cart need to fit in a single wide bay of the garage.

love love love split screen
As a baby potter I am like... reverse the wheel? Aw hell no!! 😁
Man definitely found a way that works for him. Zero chance im doing it that way. You do you fam.
Same!!!
Baby potter 😂
Same.
This makes more sense to me
Brilliant, but now….. I’m going to have to subscribe AGAIN.
