You realize what so many people fail to and that's the stigma placed on the psychiatric population!!!! Thank you for this content! Yessss!! the stigma must end! I’m happy I can motivate you in any way! Those 3 semester will fly by. I would tell you some of the things I used to study but they have changed the test since I took it
I’m hoping to start my PMHNP program soon. Psych was my favorite during my BSN program. I’ve battled with depression all my life, however, after admitting my 14 yr old son to an inpatient psych facility, I know it’s my calling now. Thank you for this video. It’s good to see another sister talking about mental health.

Girl, let me tell you...I'm half way through your video and I just want you to know, that you are in the right career. That's coming from someone who has experienced multiple health issues with mental illness. I experienced a very complex trauma and ended up on hard drugs. Thank you for caring enough and Thank God for that desire and passion, he has placed inside you. Much Love!

Its so crazy that I found your channel while researching Pysch NP because we have very similar backgrounds. I low key want to call it confirmation after you said roll tide and that you have a million degrees lol. I have 3 degrees 1st one was for psych 2nd my ASN and 3rd my BSN from The University of Alabama. This video was very much appreciated.
Congratulations to you this is awesome.. I really look up to you for keep striving and having the motivation to continue getting all your degrees. I am currently on my 4th degree and enrolled in PMHNP program and love watching your videos.
I think you’re going to make a great teacher, too. I’m currently in the RN program and always dreamed about being a psychologist. Now I’m researching Psych NP and stumbled here. Thanks for sharing!!
I’ve had friends with schizophrenia and I always sit with them and listen. Ask them questions if you’re not sure and be respectful. It’s important to understand that even if they are seeing hearing or feeling things not actually real to us, it is very much so real to them and you should never tell them it’s just in their head. Chances are they know already and are struggling to cope. Everyone deserves to feel heard.
You get it!!! It is super important for us to respect what they are saying and feeling for them to continue to open up and not become a prisoners of their mind
When I had my very first anxiety attack I didn’t know what was going on because I thought I was having a heart attack. It’s like mines always made my chest hurt. I kept going back to the hospital and then a younger PA told me it was all in my head and nothing was wrong with me and she did not believe what happened because in her exact words “I’ve worked with patients like you”. It was sad because she was a younger woman of my skin color. Idk if it’s just me but I felt more comfortable and relaxed when I dealt with older physicians etc. I give anyone a chance young or not but it just all depends on the situation. Your mental health matters too whether you’re in the medical profession or not and I know healthcare professionals deal with a lot but it is a way to speak to people without making them feel bad about themselves.
Thank you for sharing I am currently working on my BSN which will be complete in 5/2024 and I am looking into Psychiatric NP programs. Mental health has always been a passion of mine. The patients definitely need to see more black and brown faces and someone that is relatable. I also subscribed 🙂

I’m so glad I came across your channel. I’m about to finish my BSN and I’m a full time psych RN. I’m thinking to get enrolled in the PMHNP program, probably next year. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us, you are awesome 👏🏻
Well damn! When you said “10 years later” then 2006, I was like “what! You look so young! Black don’t crack, facts. Amazing video, very informative, got a new sub!
Wow your story is similar to mine. I worked in a Level 1 in Surgical Trauma ICU as well. I graduated with my PMHNP December 2019. Covid set me back as well as far as my job search. I now have a part-time and full-time PMHNP job. You are correct there is a stigma attached to mental health in our community. Good luck to you.
@@angelthepsychnp253 One job is going into nursing homes doing geriatric psych. My full-time job is outpatient tele-psych but I go into the office to do it. I have a awesome supervising physician who’s in the office daily as well.
Great content! and it is sooo good to see a black woman posting an intelligent video that can inspire us all. I am studying to become a psych NP myself. I will be done in December 2021. I'm almost there and will be starting my own practice too. Thank you.
Hi! Glad to find your channel. I have been contemplating between CRNA and PMHNP. I’m currently a BSN, RN. I work in the ICU. I’m thinking about the job market and so fourth. I love both profession. Just don’t know...I also live in Florida.
Heeeyyy Junie! I’m glad you found my Channel to! I also dealt with that decision.. as icu nurses it’s like we always think about CRNA because it makes perfect sense! BUT for me I’ve alway have a love for mental health and we need people in this Field who are passionate about it so we can get people the help they need.. Either field is rewarding financially but think about being happy long term! Which one do you immediately think about? Stayed tuned! Also you can follow me on ig angelthepsychnp and if you have more question DM me.. I’ll help you as much as I can 🤗
You are so resilient. That's a lot of school but look at you now! This is very inspiring and encouraging for me who is considering psychiatry or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner
Ughhhhhh this is so inspiring I just want to cry😭. I’m almost done with my BSN, one more year to go. So nice to see someone like me achieve what you have achieved! Thank you so much for this, you truly have inspired me to further my education. Thank you for this.
Omg thank you so much! I have been struggling with career paths after receiving my bachelors in psychology and always wanted to become a psychiatrist but don’t like the amount of years needed and you have officially helped me realize that this is the step I need to take! Thank you 💕💕
@@angelthepsychnp253 funny I should re-stumble upon this video because I am seriously considering the PMHNP journey! Looking at grad programs- Maybe it’s a sign? 🙏🏻 thank you again for the inspiration and community health teaching at 5:45 ❤️
I'm in the application process for a PMHNP program in TN. I appreciate your story! Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing it; I completely understand where you were coming from regarding anxiety. I suffered when I was in my early twenties. Because I've been there and have overcome, I want to help others. Inclusion and representation matters and it's time to see more people that look like me in the mental health field.💜
Thank you for sharing this. I also love psychology and it’s had a personal effect in my life, especially lifting me out of dark places. I too entertained the idea of becoming a psychiatrist. The other options were PMHNP or Psychologist. Your video is helping me to make decisions. Thank you.
I have an Associates degree and BA in Psych too! I'm going for my ADN next year! I'm on the same track basically. I'm happy I found your channel! Is a BSN a requirement to become a PMHNP?
Been a RN for 2 years. Just started ICU/ER nursing a couple months ago but honestly don't feel like I want to stick with it long term. I dont think Id want to do ACNP either because I dont really want to stick with ICU. Honestly been thinking of going back for PMHNP once Im done paying off loans with travel nursing.
NURSES have been using this pandemic money to get away from bedside its been rough. I FEEL AND UNDERSTAND right where you are. BUT only do PMHNP if you really like psych. Dealing with peoples mental health is no walk in the park.
This video was inspiring! I also have a bachelors in psychology and currently preparing for nursing school. Hoping to become a psych NP in the near future.
Glad I came across this video. I too worked on a Trauma ICU and then switched to psych because it was my true passion in the long run. I thought it was a weird transition to go from critical care to psychiatry, but it’s nice to see someone go through the same thing!
Thank you for subscribing! Yes the nursing field had been a tuff during this pandemic! We will survive! That’s what we do! I want to shed light on the mental health portion of what everyone is experiencing whether in healthcare or not!
Hi Angel, great video.. I can relate so much to this video. I had so many anxiety attacks in nursing school !!! I’m so glad you are in this professional position to inspire so many people to go for their dreams AND seek professional help. To demistify mental health is essential now more than ever. I would love you as a guest on my podcast to talk about your journey.
I am a registered nurse with 7 years of experience. I hold an Associates of Science in Nursing. My initial aspiration was to become a nurse anesthetist, but that goal has faded due to my responsibilities as a single mother of three. The majority of my experience lies in the ICU. A keen interest in mental health has grown within me, driven by diagnoses that run in my family. Pursuing this passion, I embarked on a journey to earn my bachelor’s degree in psychology; I have only 10 classes remaining. It came as a surprise that a nursing bachelor’s is a requirement for becoming a nurse practitioner. Additionally, I derive great joy from delving into the intricacies of science at the cellular level. Do you think it’s pointless to continue to pursue the bachelors degree?
Unfortunately the bachelors in psychology won’t help you at all other than knowledge towards becoming a PMHNP.. you will need the bachelors in science of nursing.. I have a bachelors in psychology as well that I have never used..and has not helped me as far as the advancement of my nursing career..yoh are so closed to obtaining that degree so I don’t want to advise against it.. that has to be a personal decision.. but you need a BSN to get to the masters of nursing (PMHNP)
Hi Angel I am so glad I found your channel. I am in BSN program and planning to become a psych NP. Your channel is going to help me so much. Thank you:)
If the homie was like yo! I'm hearing voices, I would give them the serious look to let them know I understand the depth of what they just told me. Then anything from a session to brunch would be what I use to try to get them to talk about it . Then I'll decide if they too crazy to still be my friend 🤷🏾♀️
If some is hearing voices trying to get them to open up and talk to you is a start! It’s better than “man you tripping” But they more than likely will require some interventions thru medicine! But don’t stop being their friend if it turns out that they need more help than you can assist with 🤦🏾♀️.. take them to the nearest crisis center and then follow up to make sure they are getting the help they need 🤗
I worked MH for 5 years and later transitioned to Tele. Definitely miss it and considering Valdosta State or Walden (which is where I got my BSN). Looking fwd to seeing more videos. *** Any tips for future students on your channel?***
Yes! The program May be on the “easier” side for you since you have 5 years in MH.. but make sure you have clinical rotation lined up. Start looking now for preceptors. I have a video up on clinical issues
Before asking them any personal questions, i would let them know that they’re in a safe place to express their feelings and say what’s on their mind tell them that I’m here to help them cope and or overcome this. I want to make sure that they feel mentally safe and know that they are going to get the help they are looking for. Then i would proceed to ask them personal questions about the hallucinations, voices in their heads, etc.
Thank you for sharing your experience!! I'm starting nursing school in August and am really considering mental health nursing. Would you say combative patients are a common occurrence in mental health nursing? This is a concern of my parents lol
Yes girl!!! I worked in a Crisis for 10 years and yes they are combative most the time the male nurses jump in a take them down while the female nurse give them the injection lol.. but yes they will come in combative
Im soo intrigued and driven and so motivated by your strength in your power u are a super women made me feel soo good about my Journey I’m currently a LPNs with 4 month too go single mom of two beautiful girl I worked as a state tested nursing assistant for 14 years 4 year on psych I’m 31 years old and I want to be a nurse practitioner so bad and I love psych I love listening to people talking to people trying to help them get through the pain and fears it my calling like I have too one day . but I’m scared that I won’t be able to do it the Journey is so hard and I don’t want to fail. And to answer your question about the friend? I would ask them too talk too me about the voices that there hearing maybe we can learn to do some type of meditation together breathing exercises. Too work on drifting the voices out of there head. But to actually too know that answer a good psych actually would have to learn their patients over time it could be drugs Involved trauma involved the pt could be schizophrenic.
I’m so glad I came across this video. I have a love passion for mental health. I have a bachelors in another field. I’m looking for a way to become a practitioner in Mental health and earn good money. I’m torn between going for masters in clinical counseling then doctorate or accelerated nursing program then the mental health nurse practitioner. What would you advise?
It depends on your goals! If you enjoy counseling then maybe the masters in clinical counseling but if you want to prescribe them you will need the nursing degrees
In Response to what would you say to someone in a crisis - Having been in a similar situation along the lines of a PMHNP and i would compassionately listen and say I would try and help connect them to resources depending on weather it’s a adult or adolescent I love nursing field having been connected to so many in home nursing staff my plans after HS is go get my LPN ( get clinical experience) then transfer to a LPN to ADN program near me then ADN to BSN then BSN to MSN in psych nurse practitioner at the same university or different university as a nursing friend of mine she goes to NKU my top four are Xavier University Ohio ,NKU, Capella flex path, University of Cincinnati main campus I say main bc they have satellite 📡 locations around Cincinnati Ohio
I've been considering psych path for years and never made the move . I'm finally taking steps to switch gears from pharmacy tech to psych, I'm not sure which route to take 🤔 I have only done nursing pre-requisites so far. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you for this video!❤
I'm so glad to hear you say Walden sista I just started the program because we are under served in the black and brown community. If you want to reach out to me as a mentor while I'm going through the program I would greatly appreciate it.
I don’t know if you’ll see this! I’m 28 with 3 children. I was working towards lpc because I felt it was too much to do psychiatry. So I pivoted again after researching about NPs. I am absolutely in love with this idea because I thought this was a dream I had to give up. ( I had to drop out of college and take care of my siblings and mother after my dad passed) However, I wonder if I’m too old at 28. I’m only 4 short of my prerequisites for my BSN. Do you think it’s too late? Will anyone hire a new psych NP who is 33 or 34? Thank you for your channels and this information!
If someone were to tell me that they are hearing voices, I would immediately ask what are these voices telling you? How long has this been going on? When do you hear the voices? Maybe it’s my experience in mental health...I worked in behavioral health, corrections and now I’m in detox. At this point for me, I would love to work in a acute psych unit.
Phewww 5 degrees 😅 I just finished my BS in Environmental Science but I’m thinking about pursuing a career as an APRN/PMHNP. Kind of nervous thinking about how having to start from scratch again, any advice about transitioning into a nursing program??
There won’t be a transition sis.. you just have to go to nursing school.. and then from there if you like psych become a psych nurse it will help you with your experience when you become a PMHNP.. come on we need you on the field 💕
Can you transition from ADN to PMHNP ? I really have passion into mental health . But I chose the adn route because I have a son and I wanted to make fast money but I dont want to limit myself because if my circumstances
You have to get your BSN first then you can do the PMHNP.. I recommend you working as a psych nurse as well if you know you want to go the PMHNP route.. it will help you out a lot with knowing meds and the behaviors the come with certain diagnoses
@@angelthepsychnp253 there are program that let you transition from ADN to BSN/MSN I wonder when I obtain my ADN i can enroll and get the MSN and start as a PMHNP? I know it alot of work but I feel like its destined for me
I'm a year away from getting my bachelors in psychology. If I want to become a psych nurse, how long after I graduate would it take? Would I have to start from 0, another 4 years? and do you come out with a job from school?
Yes you have to go to nursing school.. you can get the associates and start working until you go back and get the bachelors in nursing.. you can go straight into psych nursing after you graduate nursing school
Can you please share your experience at Walden university did you enjoy that school I’m asking because I am right behind you currently looking for a good grad school now thanks in advance
Hey Shakera i did go to school full time and work full time.. I was a travel nurse so I have more flexibility with my schedule.. but I wasn’t horrible at all!
It depends on what you want to do.. I don’t think you should go into pmhnp unless you like psych..as far as job security I think it’s healthcare you won’t have a problem with job security..whether you do one, the other or both
The program was OK.. I feel the same as I felt once I left nursing school you will learn more once you get to practicing.. school is just the politics of it all..
Hi! I go to school in the fall of this year and my end goal is to become a psych NP. In your opinion, what is the best major/minor I should pressure in order to achieve that goal?
Hey Stephanie the clinical part was hard I was in LA and had to fix my schedule to go to clinical in ATL.. because I couldn’t find clinical in LA. It might be better now because the demand for mental health professionals is all the way up
It’s like any other school some professors better than others.. but you have to find your own clinical and I recommend you start now! That was the hardest part
hello Muho Hyun, I'm starting Walden this summer also. Classes starting May 31, 2021. Maybe we can connect and help each other get through the program.

Thank you for the video! I'm starting Walden May 31, 2021. Is there anything you can share that would be helpful to know about Walden and to help me be successful?
Good Morning LaMarcia the best advice I can give if you are still going to be working full time is to work ahead of the syllabus as much as you can! That will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and keep you organized

Yes! Come on! The time will pass whether you are in school or not.. I’m happy I can be a inspiration to you
Omg thank you so much! I have been struggling with career paths after receiving my bachelors in psychology and always wanted to become a psychiatrist but don’t like the amount of years needed and you have officially helped me realize that this is the step I need to take! Thank you 💕💕
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much for starting your channel. This is my end goal MHPNP. Your channel going help me with information towards MHPNP!

Thank you sis 💕
I'm in the application process for a PMHNP program in TN. I appreciate your story! Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing it; I completely understand where you were coming from regarding anxiety. I suffered when I was in my early twenties. Because I've been there and have overcome, I want to help others. Inclusion and representation matters and it's time to see more people that look like me in the mental health field.💜

I also love psychology and it’s had a personal effect in my life, especially lifting me out of dark places.
I too entertained the idea of becoming a psychiatrist. The other options were PMHNP or Psychologist.
Your video is helping me to make decisions. Thank you.
You’re welcome.. whatever road you decide to take we need you in the field
Me too I’m trying to do an accelerated program

Glad I came across this video. I too worked on a Trauma ICU and then switched to psych because it was my true passion in the long run. I thought it was a weird transition to go from critical care to psychiatry, but it’s nice to see someone go through the same thing!
This is really good content! I’m sure nursing is Extremely hard these days thanks for your service I subscribed and I will be following your journey
Thank you for subscribing! Yes the nursing field had been a tuff during this pandemic! We will survive! That’s what we do! I want to shed light on the mental health portion of what everyone is experiencing whether in healthcare or not!

Thank you for sharing your story Sis! You are so beautiful. Keep inspiring!
Thank you sis! 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️ thanks for tuning in
Thank for this!! I’m an inspiring nurse and this video motivated me soo much!

Thank you for this, I'm at Walden now working on my PMH-NP. In the midst of finding preceptors 😬 So grateful to have
stumbled on your video by chance.
Yes good luck.. this is the fun part
How is the program thus far?
@@unapologeticallyme8941 I'm enjoying it, glad I chose this route.
Love your videos! Please keep them coming 🙂
I love this video so much!
Thank you for watching
Great video keep it up ❤️
If the homie was like yo!
@@angelthepsychnp253 beautiful

Thank you 🙏🏾
I worked MH for 5 years and later transitioned to Tele.
Great answer ❤️
I would say me too! Let's talk about it!
I’m glad you would at least take the time out to listen..🤗🤗
You just gave me so much hope for becoming a psych np so thank you and keep it up I’m so happy to see you living your best life
Thank you for sharing your experience!!
Keep pushing sis.. you got this!! We need your experience
Great video
Thank you 🙏🏾
I’m so glad I came across this video.
Hi Angel your video is so inspiring I’m currently applying to Walden university for psych np I wanted to ask you questions about the program.
Owwwww ok Angel !
If you want to do psych np you have to go to nursing school first and then get the masters “nurse practitioner” and specialize in psych.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and starting your channel. Question, did you do travel nursing through out your PMHNP program?
You’re welcome.. yea I did do travel nursing my whole program.. I’m making a video about it.. stay tuned

I’m with you and it’s not too late 😃
Woman noooooo. I just got my psych np at 39 lol. ITs never to late. If you really want to be a PMHNP go FOR IT.
I am 50 and thinking about psych NP😊
If someone were to tell me that they are hearing voices, I would immediately ask what are these voices telling you? How long has this been going on? When do you hear the voices?
Maybe it’s my experience in mental health...I worked in behavioral health, corrections and now I’m in detox. At this point for me, I would love to work in a acute psych unit.
Yes is definitely your experience lol
Thank you for your very interesting video 😊 I am a nurse educator on utube. I subscribed. Good luck.
Did you like Walden, I'm thinking of going to their program
It was ok. Ive heard they have made some improvements basically any school you go to its on you. Thats how i have always felt.

First thing I would ask a friend is the voices telling you harm your self or others? What are the voices saying?
Good questions!!

Thank you for sharing your experience! Did you work full-time and go to school?
Hey Shakera i did go to school full time and work full time.. I was a travel nurse so I have more flexibility with my schedule.. but I wasn’t horrible at all!
Do you recommend getting the FNP for more job security, or is getting the masters/dnp in mental health nurse practitioner ok
It depends on what you want to do.. I don’t think you should go into pmhnp unless you like psych..as far as job security I think it’s healthcare you won’t have a problem with job security..whether you do one, the other or both
In terms of schooling how much more difficult is a NP program from a BSN burning program ?
NP school you are learning meds and diagnosis so more studying..
Would you recommend Walden?
I would.. I know many who have gotten there MSN from Walden
I’ve been a nurse for 4 years, not in psych. Do you think it’s necessary to get psych trained experience before going to pmhnp school?
Now in days I think yes
How did you pay for school as a travel nurse?
Student loans
I got accepted for the same program at Walden. How did you like it Sis? Ready to get started now, definitely a high need :)
How is it going? I’m interested but they’re expensive.
All you need is your RN, BSN and then the masters in psych np (MSN)
Hi! I am in So Cal and have been looking into Walden PMHNP. How did you liked the program? Getting clinical placement?
Hey Stephanie the clinical part was hard I was in LA and had to fix my schedule to go to clinical in ATL.. because I couldn’t find clinical in LA. It might be better now because the demand for mental health professionals is all the way up
