    I'm graduating this year and am debating inpatient vs outpatient. I'm still scared of practicing but I will have to just bite the bullet and start practicing! My former co-worker told me he felt like he was ready after passing his boards but he REALLY learned how to be a PMHNP during his first year and a half of practice.

      School doesn't prepare you for the real world no matter what profession you're in so go for it! I'll be doing psych NP school soon and the thought of treating patients is scary but no matter what job I've ever been in, even being self employed and in the Army, there's no better training than on the job.

    Hey, thanks for the video! I got accepted to medical school and want to become a psychiatrist. But, I'm considering the Psych NP route, because the careers sound similar and becoming a psych NP would involve much less debt. How different is being a psych NP compared to a psychiatrist?

    Can you talk about the therapeutic aspect of being a PMHNP? How much therapy do you /actually/ get to provide compared to managing medications, assessments, etc?

    • @mariaannaanastos376
      @mariaannaanastos376 4 роки тому

      @@ThePsychNP Thanks for your response!! I never heard of the PMHNP practice until very recently. I've been debating mental health counseling or clinical psychology down the road but feel kind of discouraged by the pay vs loans. I've always wanted to provide therapy and be holistic focused. Ironically, my philosophy has always been somewhat mistrusting of psychiatric medications... I still want to be able to have as much range of skill as possible if that makes sense? I understand the PMHNP has a medical model focus... Do you have any thoughts for this? Also, what may be the range of mental illness severity does the PMHNP tend to work with?
      Sorry for all my questions! I really appreciate it!

      @@mariaannaanastos376 Hi! I'm relating to what you said about wanting to provide holistic practice. I was a massage therapist for 7 years and practiced a lot of therapeutic communication before becoming a Psych RN (I'm a nurse resident in a psych inpatient setting- I also have a channel and vlog my Psych RN experience). I used to be mistrustful of psych meds, but not now since having psychopharmacology in school and seeing how they affect patients in practice (Knowledge is power!:) Many patients want holistic care and are mistrustful of medications too. Paradoxically, by learning all I can about medications I'm in a good position to help people who want to use less medications. Good luck to you and go for your dreams!

    Can you work full time I work 6 out of 14 days and be a full time nurse? I am going to Western Governors for my BSN (highest score i can get is a 3.0). My current GPA is 2.92 and my nursing LPN to RN was 1.97 with a failed class in Mother/Baby. I know I have a long uphill battle to get into a PMHNP program but I wont give up! I have worked as a Prison LPN, Long Term LPN, and Now a RN PCC in a Rehab facility. Not many mental health facilities in my area to work at and the ones that are here would put me in a financial bind.

      Rebecca, I appreciate that. I think any provider can look back and say I wish I could have done this better. You can use the best evidence based practice and your patient will have a negative response to medication. It will happen, but I'm not so sure they classify as mistakes 👍

      I've been a male nurse or "Murse" as they like to call us for 6 years. I have always leaned towards psych. If anything being a male will help you immensely as I am not a minority in the traditional sense, I am definitely a minority in nursing though. Nursing last I checked was 94% female. They love men in the profession. I have moved up the ranks quickly and now I'm the manager on a Med Surg floor. Don't just go straight to NP school though, put your time in as a nurse. You will learn so much. I recently started my Psych NP program and so far so good. Put in the hard work and you will get there.

    I’m in between deciding to go for psych np or CRNA. I have an undergrad degree in bio psych and a BSN. I work in the cticu . I’ve also worked in the OR. I’ve also been getting a lot of ETOH patients and people with substance abuse . With being a crna not working for 3 years , going into debt , making 225k,but having so many taxes taken out doesn’t appeal to me . I don’t enjoy critical care but psych always fascinated me . I got into a psych np program and then I stopped after 1 semester . I just don’t know what direction to take . Is being a psych np worth it, is the salary worth it ? Is the life style worth it ?
