This podcast is testament that gone are the days when traditional institutions like BOU relied on traditional ways of relying information to the public. I must commend Director communication Dr. Egesa for championing this innovation well executed by passionate engaging Pumla. Thanks Milly for delivering an authentic presentation on the role of statistics and meta data on our macro-econometrics. You really simply communicated well. Kudos to BOU for being relevant to this generation. Looking forward to more episodes going forward.
Proud to be mentored by Milly. She lives and breathes statistics. If we all embraced statistics and embedded it in all our processes, we would make significant savings. Live a healthy life.Avoid repetitive errors and mistakes.
Such an insightful discussion on data science, statistics, and big data! Hearing directly from the Director of Statistics at the Bank of Uganda adds immense value, especially with the practical applications and challenges highlighted. This podcast is a goldmine for anyone passionate about how data transforms industries and drives decision-making. Incredible content-thank you Milly for sharing these valuable perspectives!
Congratulations Pumla dear and your team. We are here to listen to you unpack the numbers and how they reflect on the status of our economy. I think apart from decision making, stats help us self reflect on our performance in different spheres of life. For instance, the recent stats on men and their emotional attachment to their children was alarming, just 5%. It was shocking...The stats/numbers also need qualitative interpretation to give them context and validity...
where pumla is we gooo though am part of the team that usually collects the data on behalf of statistics department,Kudos to our Director statistics and kudos to the entire Bou for this initiative
Thats why courses that have elements of machine learning and data science like the Master of Science in Engineering Artificial Intelligence (MS EAI) and IT (MS IT) from places like Carnegie Mellon University Africa are key. Every organisation now needs a data scientist to make informed decisions.
Confusing statistics and data science: While statistics is a key component of data science, statistics is more about verifying known facts or assumptions using data, while data science harnesses large amounts of data generated by all economic activities. When you confuse the two, you end up employing statisticians in place of Data scientists whose curiosity is to unearth insights from all data. Good Podcast, we will be interacting on more critical issues around monetary policy!
statistics and data science are more intertwined than you may think. Statistics isn't merely about verifying known facts; it also explores uncertainties and drives discoveries, which is integral to data science. On the other hand, data science extends statistical methods with machine learning, programming, and domain expertise. The value lies in collaboration between statisticians and data scientists, rather than an ‘either-or’ approach. This podcast excellently highlights the synergy needed to tackle real-world challenges!"
Data Science is basically using Statistics to analyse large amounts of data. So yes, statisticians make great data scientists after they add a few skills in Machine learning and computer science. Which the Director clearly mentioned, going from the traditional way of doing things to higher levels, eg from just excel to tools such as R, Power BI, tableau, etc to handle Big data better. Besides just that, data scientists across the world slowly evolved from the major fields of Statistics and Computer science, there haven't been many courses on data science untill currently, these were statisticians, computer scientists, software developers that extended theirs skills and knowledge. So, having statisticians as data scientists is a pretty descent start. It's a process.

@@InspiredbyBarbNatifu let's give them the benefit of the doubt. I am sure there were many strings pulled for this pioneer podcast. Once the critical mass of informed viewers happen, the public engagements will begin to happen. We are still in the early days of a revolution within BOU.
