    I see a future where the first manufacturer out there to listen to consumers wins big. And I mean huge. We want a smaller, simple, 4 cylinder, 4wd, solid axle, non-electric, no massive screens, non high tech, reliable, and fairly capable off roader that isn't crap on road. Keep the price down because it doesn't have every new tech gadget known to man in it, and watch the things fly off dealer lots. So who's it gonna be? Who wants the money? Who's brave enough to make a simple truck in a high tech world? We WILL buy it. Someone just has to step up and build it. Waiting!!!!

      yeah. we talk about this all the time in the overlanding groups i belong to (and yes we actually overland). when you're talking "software" as the limiting factor in off road capability (as these kids were regarding the hummer) you're having the wrong conversation. Jeep/Stellantis is in the process of learning that very hard lesson right now and I say that as a 30 year Wrangler owner (currently a '14 JK heavily modified).

      I am thinking something in line with the German Army version of the G Wagon. No tablet in the middle, solid front and rear axles with mechanical lockers, a 3.0 diesel engine, pleather seats. Start that out at about 30k, there will be a massive number of these on the trails in no time.

      @@carlstrohm3785 I sold trucks at Ford for years. That sounds good, but that is not what people were asking for. Fords best selling truck is the middle of the line XLT, with a few options. There is a niche market for a low cost truck that the maverick filled. Low cost, low frills rucks sit on the lot and get discounted to sell.

      Have a look at the Suzuki Jimny. It is blocked from selling in USA. But all the yankees want them. Seems like a big hit worldwide. Doesn't help with the checkered past with the Suzuki Samurai which had it's reputation tarnished to protect the financial interest of the Jeep Wrangler.

      @oldgrunt5569 2 місяці тому

      dead simple and EV is an oxymoron. the 4x4 EVs are still 10-20 years away from being legit. if you're truly offroading in it you need to be able to do moderately complex field repairs with tools and parts you have with you. you just can't with these EVs. then add the challenges their weight puts on recovery when they get stuck or encounter an obstacle they can't get over and its a loser for anything but light day trip style offroading. i do about 12k miles / 40 ish days of overlanding every year all over North America. i can tell IRL stories about EVs in our group ruining or nearly ruining trips. about the rivian especially.

    • @LouisSubearth
      @LouisSubearth 2 місяці тому

      @oldgrunt5569 An EV can be very simple indeed. All you need is a motor, inverter, batteries and a way to turn pedal input into forward motion. An engine alone has thousands of parts, a motor has usually 3 to 6.

    • @oldgrunt5569
      @oldgrunt5569 2 місяці тому +1

      @@LouisSubearth lol spoken like a guy whose never actually overlanded. the average EV battery weighs something on the order of 1/2 a ton. try carrying a spare EV battery along with a month's worth of camping gear, repair tools, recovery tools, clothes etc. in contrast 12 gallons of gas (200 ish miles of range minimum) weighs about 75 lbs and can be stored behind your spare tire. don't confuse me with a luddite EV hater. I'm not. I am, however, a realist and extremely salty overlander. And for legit overlanding purposes (not the camp and drive firebreaks for a long weekend that gets called overlanding on much of this platform) EVs are just not ready no matter how "simple" you make them. There are just some immutables to them that won't be fixed in our lifetime.

    More charging stations and better batteries will shrink the PHEV segment. Build the BEV with a native NACS plug and forget about PHEV. While it is likely to take more than 2 years I expect to start seeing significantly lighter batteries in cars in 5 years or less which will benefit BEVs in general but especially off road and towing.

    "Would you be more interested in a Scout if it was gasoline or electric?"
    Electric. But it has to be done right. Don't just do fully-independent suspension. Don't sacrifice seating position and visibility for range and try to fix it by adding a million cameras. It has to have NACS. It has to have 300+ miles of range.
    NGL, I'm really looking heavily at the new Ramcharger because it can tow 14k lbs on gasoline. But I really don't think a Scout would be a huge tow-er. It doesn't really need the on-board generator.
    If the new Scout has at least a solid rear axle, big tires and little wheels, 300+ miles of range, NACS charging, and a good seating position, I'd 100% buy it.

      In the most USA states the car market is very conservative so the company bets on ICE. I don't think that's for long. EVs will take off like smart phones.

    • @AHungryHunky
      @AHungryHunky 2 місяці тому +1

      To me, a PHEV makes sense where I live. Traveling west into the city, it gets easier to find chargers, but traveling east into the mountains, they become impossible to find. Most EVs theoretically have the range to make it to most places I go, but the problem with mountain driving is that it's very difficult to calculate actual range, and definitely beyond the ability of most car based computers. The constant changing terrain and road quality just don't play well with range estimation. You might have to drive straight up the face of the mountain on one side, using triple the power you normally would, only to gently roll down the tapering spine on the other side so regen won't get you back any of what you used going up. Or you could try to plan a route that avoids inclines, only to find its all rutted dirt and gravel so slow going and using more torque.
      I'm not the "take a jerry can everywhere" kind of person, but the lack of infrastructure is exemplified the further you get from population centers. Being able to top off in any small town is very important.

    Well, I didn't even finish this video and can promise you this car will be a total fail. Off road vehicles and EV just don't make sense for profitable market share. Ask Rivian how they are doing. No EV manufacturer (even Tesla) will ever be able to make an SUV 4wd type vehicle that will be a success. Unfortunately VW is 10 years too late to the market for the EV craze. What they should be offering for the USA market is a Scout with a very efficient and clean burning 4 cylinder turbo diesel that gets 35-40 mpg on the highway. They wouldn't be able to keep them on the lots.

I am very happy that you think this can compete with Rivian, Hummer, F150, but all these big trucks are big because how messed up your emission regulations are. People also needs something even smaller than Ranger. And if you have a model like that, you can sell it not only as a small workhorse but also as a lifestyle truck.

    You might be surprised at how electricity is needed to go rock crawling. Jimmy Underhill converted a 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser using parts from a Nissan Leaf. It's been surprising how well the vehicle works off road, even with a 100 hp electric motor and a 30 kwh battery pack. The Land Cruiser doesn't really use a lot of energy when engaging in low speed rock crawling and much of the energy expended on climbs is returned when using regenerative braking downhill. The swapped Land Cruiser occasionally needed to be towed at the end of a day of off roading, but it isn't that often.
    The one thing that any off road EV will struggle with is freeway driving. Large, boxy vehicles have fairly high drag and cruising at 70 mph on the freeway will have a bigger effect on range than it will for a Tesla Model 3. Jimmy's Land Cruiser is usually trailered to its off road sites, and when he drives it on urban freeways, he limits his speed to 60 mph. The biggest challenge for an off road EV is getting to the trails.

    Been saying it for awhile, EV has its place in the world. And if this Scout is going to follow in the original foot prints of the original IS, it needs to be very capable as the original going Off Road. But if it is just going to be an all season pavement queen, EV is fine. Can appease the fans for the retro look with an EV power train and done deal. Small consumer market and the company might stay afloat. Turning the original IS into and EV powertrain, would give it a 2nd life. I am pro V8, but I don't foresee that happening. The trend has been dumping V8's in favor of smaller engines with turbos. Which is an awful idea for long term life. IMO. But that is relevant to the type of vehicle and what life it is intended for. The way Stellantis is going, Scout could slide in and take some of their business easily.

    1 - it’s going to be nothing like the cult following scout. It’s going to be a modern ev with everything that comes with it. It’s will be a scout in name only.
    2 - it will he extremely expensive. Like Tommy said, new ground up platforms cost billions, and I bet this scout started development before ford and GM pulled back on their EV ambitions due to low demand. It was probably far too late for scout and so they’ll be stuck with an ev platform when ev’s aren’t very popular and way too expensive
    3 - it will be a typical ev. Laden with tech that’s completely unnecessary, annoying, easily broken and hard to fix.
