Shaun greetings again from the Illinois river! You might remember me from the backyard tour in STL 2003! We said hi at creve coure lake I’ll take your advice every time! The HS backroll has eluded me all these years and I still want to stomp it even at 57 yrs old brother! I’M not giving up! Thanks for your direction!
Creve Coure! Many good memories from there. This is awesome you're going for it. Keep the speed pretty much as slow as you can and still feel like you can get some decent power out of a cut.
Shaun, I have had such a great time watching your channel. I started wakeboarding back in the days of skurfers. (yes, I am old) Just wanted to drop a comment and let you know I enjoy the content. Also, my very first wakeboard was a Shaun Murray Hyperlite with the painted sunshine graphic. Keep doing your thing!
Met you at the 2000 Masters Tournament, I think it was around that time, and I’ll never forget how good you were to my son and daughter. They idolized you at the time, I have idolized you since. Great stand up Christian dude. Still following you to this day and riding every chance I get at 57. Still chasing the blind 180 that has alluded me since the first day I rode in 1998. God bless you Shaun and we appreciate the how to videos you put out!
These tutorial videos have helped me out a lot, especially the load and release set of videos. Tomorrow marks the day that I start working on the HS backroll, so this will be interesting because it will be the first major trick that I am attempting so wish me luck.
Shaun Murray pro wake boarder... gets pumped he does a back roll....That's like me saying I'm stoked I know how to walk at age 40....things i never thought i'd see/hear...lol... I miss the skits and funny stuff you used to do back in the VHS instructional videos like detention. I'm surprised you don't do more silly stuff like that on your channel.
That's the best part about this! People think you have to risk yer biscuit to have a fun ride. Go back to simple tricks you skipped over and you'll surprise yourself.
That was definitely helpful Shaun! Repeating several times key must dos such as look up and away definitely drills it in. Please keep those videos rolling out on basic flips.. at least for me...
Hey Shaun! Could you do some more footage of what a lesson looks like with you? My favorite video is you teaching surface 180s to the student . I’m trying to get down and work with you in the spring .
Just saw your email you sent to my website and this answers my question I replied with. Not sure if I'll be able to get an edit put together about this but will keep it in mind if I happen to line up a shoot while at OWC so I can give you and others an idea of what coaching w me looks like.
For sure. I do one in this video quickly. Pretty much the same thing but edge "away" harder and let your hip connection shift to your back hip and that side of your core while going off the water.
Thank you Shaun! I am about to try my first flips this week. I will receive tomorrow my wakeboard pylon to make the rope mooring point higher. Do you think the backroll is easier than the trantrum? Peace out!
Let us know how it goes Franco. Backroll vs Tantrum is really up to the rider. The Tantrum takes a bit more timing and technique but some people find it more natural. Especially people who can do a backflip on a tramp, off a dock etc...
Has been on my mind and I need to put a newer one together. I have one in my Detention 2012 series but yet to upload to YT. On my mind Andy so hopefully not too long from now.
I landed my TS backroll at 65’ going 18. This morning I got it w2w at 50’ going 18 as well. I usually ride 70’ going 21.5. Should I go straight to 70’ now or just make my way up (50,60,65,70) ?
I put everyone on a Hyperlite Murray. I've helped shape my boards for 30 years and put features into them that I believe make hydrodynamical sense. Subtle features like the spine through the center of the board to soften landings and make it playful if you want to slide the board around. Progressive continuous rocker to help give good consistent pop off the wake. And a rolled toeside and heelside edge to keep it user friendly., First timers up to pro tour riders. Just then need to decide which size. Let me know if you need help with that.
So, I’ve noticed some pros mess around with these inside out tricks. I’ve been riding off and on for about 30 years and I’ve never done more than a little Ollie or 180 going inside out. Maybe you should do A video about inside out tricks. It seems like there’s some sort of benefit in doing them that people like me you don’t know about.
That usually happens if you edge away properly, maybe a little too much, but you let your back hip become the connection to the handle rather than staying connected to the front hip
I’m a tall guy and have a problem with slightly under rotating. I land on top of the board but towards the front edge vs the middle or slightly back. Also the board pops out from underneath me on impact. Any tips on increasing rotation speed to land more evenly on the board? Thanks.
Sounds like you may not see your landing coming? Are you able to spot your landing at all? Kind of tough to know exactly what you're talking about, but seeing your landing is one of the most important things to getting the board to stop under you when you make contact w the water. You can check out an app called Givego, which allows you to upload a video of you doing a trick and I can give you some tips on what I'm seeing in the trick. It's a paid app so I'm not trying to be a salesman, just something that is an option if you'd like to check it out.
Shaun Murray My grandparents live out on the lake Murray and my dad grew up on the lake my dad has been wakeboarding for a long time and has looked up to you for inspiration and now that im old enough to wakeboard I have gotten into it the past couple years and we pull behind a jetski because we don’t have a boat but my dad is encouraging me to try and land a flip because there isn’t much else I can do behind a jetski. This vid will definitely help, thanks for still being out there for us all🤗
Great step by step explanation, Shaun. Very process-oriented which I connect with! I know you can do a switch HS Front flip, but rumor was you had a hard time doing a regular HS front flip. Is that true?
I have landed this flip 3 times in the past 2 months. My problem is a 180 rotation during the back role. And my board just doesnt bite the water when i land. It bounces away.😢 any tips on making this more consistent???
Very common symptom of edging away a bit too much off the wake and letting your connection to the rope go from the middle of your core (center of your hips) while cutting in, to your rear hip while flipping. Need to keep that front hip connected more off the wake and during the flip.
I have a question, when you are doing the back roll you’re not tucking like you would do on a trampoline so do you want to be more open then tucked when doing the flip?
Yes, like he mentioned you want the board to drag you around the rotation. You're only going to get that being opened up. If you tuck you have to force the spin using your body. Also makes it harder to open back up and sight your landing like he mentioned. At least that's been my experience.
Mikey is right w his reply Landon. The more you tuck, or squat, the less effect your lean and edge become, which makes the push and pop of the board less effective. Make sure you watch the video that is embedded in this video "How to get more pop" It helps make sense of it all but let me know if you have more questions buddy!
I have a lot of people start w a one wake toeside backroll. slow speed, approx 18-19. Short rope about 60 feet. Short approach, about 10 feet out. One hand on the rope and take an easy cut in. Hard cut at the wake, keep cutting through the wake and at the top of the wake, it's a backflip. I need to do a video on this bc I know this is a short explanation.
Comp vests feel like much less bc they are much less and honestly many of them won't float you when you need it. Plus they don't provide as much impact protection in my opinion. To answer what I think you're asking, it's comfortable, floats and protects me, and doesn't stop me from doing any trick that I want to do.
Just an idea here: I'm gonna go ahead and assume you have a lot of viewers who don use the metric system instead of the imperial system. If you're editing in any boat speeds or rope lengths, I think it'd be great if you'd also show the metric versions of that!
This channel seriously deserves more subsecibers. Shaun Murray is one of the biggest names in wakeboarding and his videos are extremely well made

Thanks for adding the boat speed and rope length recommendations. I just started a year ago and boat speed and lengths were major questions.
Happy to help and I know it's hard to have an idea of where to start.
I'm so happy I rediscovered you, Shaun, and wakeboarding. My childhood dreams and a whole boat load of fun!
This was a super good video for me. I finally did a my first flip by following it. I love your videos! Thanks a lot!

Awesome tutorial Shaun, can't wait to try this!! Greetings from Muskoka, Canada
Right on! Greetings backatcha up there!

Looks like an awesome day out on the water great info
Thanks Ryan!
Thanks for posting these! Can you do an updated video on 360+ spins with handle passes?
Will do that when I can. Have you seen this video? Done a while ago but still good info. ua-cam.com/video/3K0EbzKBCTg/v-deo.html
Shaun is the man!
Hey Shaun, Can you you use the startup wake approach to learn a heelside halfcab backroll?
For sure. I do one in this video quickly. Pretty much the same thing but edge "away" harder and let your hip connection shift to your back hip and that side of your core while going off the water.

Could you try to post a video for easy steps to do a ralley

Great video, and congratulations on hitting 20k subscribers! 🎉
Thanks Scott and I'm pumped on 20K subs!
Wat kind of board would you advise a beginner to use to get started with some tricks

Inside out tricks are a good time for sure. Here's a video where a few pop up

What happens if I end up landing switch all the time while attempting this? I cannot figure out how to correct that. Awesome videos by the way!
That usually happens if you edge away properly, maybe a little too much, but you let your back hip become the connection to the handle rather than staying connected to the front hip
Shaun Murray awesome thank you much! I will try that when the rona stuff ends! Thank you again 🙏🏼
Let your back hand off, helps turn your body in line with rope.

Yo Shaun I love the vids please keep it up
You bet Wazowsk. Tell Sully I said wassup. I gotta go, we just had a 2319!

Yep. That's the case. I end up doing a Frantrum when I do a regular, ehem, try a regular front.
@@Shaun.Murray, maybe that could be a next video idea? Cleaning up a trick (frantrum into a true front?)
I have landed this flip 3 times in the past 2 months. My problem is a 180 rotation during the back role. And my board just doesnt bite the water when i land. It bounces away.😢 any tips on making this more consistent???

Thanks Shaun great tips! Dam virus 🦠 shut the river so boarding is out for months. Stay safe mate ;)
No worries and bummer Ian

Shaun Murray thanks
Thanks Man
What do you think of 176 nautique
Great classic Nautique. Small but awesome for so many watersports!
Shaun Murray is it good as a 2001 for wake board?
does your life jacket have the feel as a compliment vest?
Comp vests feel like much less bc they are much less and honestly many of them won't float you when you need it. Plus they don't provide as much impact protection in my opinion. To answer what I think you're asking, it's comfortable, floats and protects me, and doesn't stop me from doing any trick that I want to do.
Shaun Murray shoot i think i bought the wrong vest😅 i’m paranoid now since they don’t float me 100% might return it and buy yours!
Thenks for a good video
Thanks for watching Max
What board do you ride?
Nate nailed it. My 139 in this video. I'm 5'6" 150 and will ride my 144 sometimes. Let me know if you have questions about sizing.
Thanks Nate!
Pros and cons of riding tail heavy?
The second I started questioning what that was on his shoulder the subtitle popped up saying DONT MIND THE SAWDUST ON MY SHOULDER ahahahh
Just an idea here: I'm gonna go ahead and assume you have a lot of viewers who don use the metric system instead of the imperial system. If you're editing in any boat speeds or rope lengths, I think it'd be great if you'd also show the metric versions of that!
I think it would be a lot more beneficial if you would slow down your replays much more. David OC does this really well
Make a double up tutorial 🙏
Here's one I did a while ago. ua-cam.com/video/4zn8GEtO0ys/v-deo.html
My length normally is 65 feet at 20-21 mph
Sounds like a good choice Simon.
I’m only 7 years old And and I can get to wake to wake on my jet ski
that’s awesome dude!!
Just landed a backflip at 12 years old
