Learning Your First Wakeboard Flip

  • "What is the first flip I should try?" One of the more common questions I get out in the wakeboarding world so in this edit I take you through the 2 flips that can help you get inverted on your wakeboard with some low risk and low impact techniques! Slowing the boat down, shortening the rope are just 2 quick ways to minimize the risk but understanding how the board should be taking your body around rather than your body carrying the board around is one of the biggest keys you will learn in this instructional piece.
    Want to get inverted like Tom Cruise in Top Gun? Yeah, me too. The toeside backroll and heelside backroll are the flips that I have the most success with while coaching students around the world. I still don't know if toe side is one or two words:) How bout back side? Backside? Whatever, either way, even if you aren't comfortable doing a flip on a trampoline, off a dock, diving board, or off the side of the boat, these flips can unlock a whole new dimension of wakeboarding!
    Enjoy your ride! ✌️

    So….. 12 years ago I was attempting huge back flips and clearing the wake but never landed and rode one out. I watched this video the other day and listened on how you said how easy it was d o impact etc…. I stuck that sob on the 6th try today!!!! Great video. Best tip for me was how you said it’s low impact and you won’t get hurt and you purposely flew onto your head. Without that I don’t think I would have tried the trick. I said f it I’m gonna trust this guy and go for it. The smile on my face today when I landed on that board made my day! I’m 45 years old too lol. Throwing that out there for all the youngsters that are scared, don’t be, you got this.

    Shaun thanks so much for the help!!! Landed my first back roll today and studied your video multiple times to do it. Also did it on your board :) landing a flip on a wakeboard has been a huge goal of mine for awhile so thanks for helping me accomplish it!!! Slowing the boat down to 19 (instead of 21) and 55' rope length definitely helped me dial it in. Plus your advice of focusing on looking up with your hip up instead of diving your head down toward the water and a short progressive cut were all excellent tips!!!!

    Been watching this video on loop for about a week. I went out and gave it a shot on July 17, 19, 21 and got it on the 24th.
    4 sets, less than 2 hours behind the boat. Practiced all of the drills in the surface 180s video, the unlock toe side video, foundations of riding, more pop on less wake, and I just wanna say thank you for being an amazing coach. In those 4 sets I’ve become a significantly more proficient rider. I’ve been out with friends who just ‘go for it’ on everything and I’m getting better much faster than them. Being intentional, slowing the boat down, changing the rope length, running drills, and not trying to be flashy is absolutely changing my love for the sport.
    I do always finish with a “flashy run” with the boat at 21 and the rope at 65. Because of these videos these runs are growing from 1minute and 3-4 jumps to 5-6 minutes and lots more activity including wake to wake both directions (not switch yet).
    I’d love to learn a few more silly tricks like the tail slides, slow looking surface 360s at the far outside point of your cut, raley without the wake, and the backspin laying down on the water I’ve seen you do.
    I’d also like to see videos on riding switch and ollies cuz these still scare me a lot. I loose most of my stability really quickly.
    Thank you Shaun!!

    Hi ! Thanks for the tutorial Shaun! I suceed backroll one or 2 time on a g23 with a big wave but more difficult on a smaller. I have two questions :
    - the board orientation on the wake is more 10h or 11h ?
    - do you transfer the body weight from heel to toes at the top of the wake ?

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  Рік тому +1

      10th hour. The transfer of body weight is the load and release similar to how you do a wake jump but for this backroll, it's an over release while shifting weight to the back foot

    What ballast level should I try for the first flip that you showed how to achieve?

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  Рік тому +1

      Depends on the boat but yesterday while pulling a student at OWC, G23, 55' rope, 17.5 mph, zero ballast. If you're in a boat that doesn't have a big ol G wake, fill up the ballast some to give you a little more umph. But if you're relying on the wake size to get you around, you may not be doing it right. Can be done w a super small wake but some size can help for sure while learning. Just make sure you use your edge (cut) through the wake to get the power and push to carry you around.

    What do you mean by edging at the bottom of the wake? Thats the only thing im confused about.

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  11 днів тому

      If your board is pointing at the boat when standing behind the boat, it's in a channel of water that is going in the same direction as the boat. That is not edging. When you begin to cut away from the direction of the boat, more importantly, against the direction the rope is pulling, you need your channel of water to tilt away from the direction of the boat, so you lean against the line, your heels or toes dig into the water and you are riding on the board's edge. That is where wakeboarding and towed watersports are different from most other action sports that use ramps to get into the air. We have a different set of physics and edging is one of the unique things we get to use. Hope that helps
