I grew lettuce for the 1st time this year. Used a plug tray. 49 transplants in 7"x 7". Started indoors under a shop light then moved to a garden bed. Worked great. Did 49 in spring and another 49 for fall. I used Nevada lettuce from burpee. Great lettuce for the heat. A tip for when the lettuce gets bitter. Soak it in cold water. I would harvest a large amount, soak in a bucket in shower for 3-5 hrs, salad spin it. Then I'd have lettuce in fridge for a couple weeks and giveaway a bunch too.
Grew lettuce late September early October when it was around 60 degrees and mid October temperatures went to low 90s and high 80s and all my lettuce bolted 😂
I used to have a small portable green house in front of my apartment balcony door. Lettuce was to easy to grow. I used the long rectangle planters and planted about 5 different varieties. My tomatoes kept falling over because I didn't know what I was doing😂. But the lettuce grew.
@thecottagepeach I usually get a mixed baby greens or micro greens pack because it's cheaper and scatter sow it between my plants. Mix in some herbs and mustard greens and you have the best mulch that you can harvest or just let it die in place, reseed themselves for fall and fertilize the bed a little bit all at once.
@thecottagepeach Yes agree. I like your videos so much. Watching your videos and your dedication brought me back to the gardening which I was not doing from long time. Thank you...
I love lettuce but my first attempt at growing it didn't make me too happy. I built a frame to protect it but it wasn't very sturdy or closed very well so bugs got inside and put tons of holes in the leaves anyway. The lettuce also bolted quite a bit under the hot weather and it tasted really bitter. I was growing from a variety mix and I really didn't know what was in there. I feel like maybe some weeds popped up among the lettuce and I ate them as well? It was a very disconcerting experience! I kind of want to try growing some small lettuce heads indoors during the winter. Have you ever tried growing lettuce indoors?
I am going to start some lettuce seeds. I want to see if I can grow them in my front porch/green house. Please tell me is this doable and any tips. I live in Westfield New York zone 6b.
Rant away ! A mate of mine fabricates pallet conveyors for a Apple storage facility. These Apples were harvested in Aust 5-6 months ago, and are still being sold in Supermarkets. The Apples are kept in Gas chambers. That cannot be a good thing 😳 Iceberg and Cos lettuce are the only ones I can grow that the white butterflys leave alone…. Which is a worry as well as I would say the variety must be GM to deter pests.
I have to say I eat salad almost every day now that I grow my own lettuce and a lot of my other veggies. They taste so much better when home grown. Currently have 8 lettuce varieties and two spinach. Planning on adding more soon, as well as other leafy greens, herbs and veggies.

Thanks for the great tip on soaking the lettuce to reduce bitterness!
Nice bibs..! Let us go to the yard an pick lettuce!! Nothing better..👩🌾👨🌾
It's so satisfying to pick your own fresh food!
@thecottagepeach yes, my soil won't support ice berg but I always hit the spot with romaine. 🤷♂️

That’s awesome! You’ll have to try some tomatoes again.
I also use lettuce to be a living mulch
Great idea

The planter/raised bed covers are such a nice idea for winter! Where did you get them? 😊
You look like Giorgia Meloni. Love your videos..
I get this a lot but she’s way older than me so idk how to feel about it 😂

It grows indoors very easily, maybe grab some new seeds and give it a try!

It really does make a difference 🙌
Yeah I’ve always wondered about apples, it definitely seems risky. I know they spray all sorts of things to keep stuff “fresh”
I have to know where you got your cute overalls 😊
They are from Patagonia!
