Thank you for this video! I’m planting garlic for the first time & was not aware that the ones from the grocery stores could have diseases that ruin the soil. Just placed an order for organic seeds
This will be my second year planting all of my own seed garlic! It's such a gratifying crop to grow. I'm going to let one of my scapes go next year and see what happens. I plant mine near Thanksgiving. I'm also in 6b. It hasn't gotten that cold by the end of November since I've started growing garlic. We haven't had a full frost yet.
Good vid, thanks. We're garlic fiends too. Bought from a garlic specialist a few years back and have been acclimatising them by replanting the biggest cloves from the harvest each year. Lot of people seem to buy new stock each year, which is cool, but don't really need to. We normally get a bit of rust on our garlic (norfolk, uk) but this year it was quite widespread. I did a bit of reading up on it. It's not passed down into the cloves, but it will linger in soil and plant debris. So I can replant the cloves from the diseased plants, but I'll do it in buckets with fresh compost to reduce the chance of picking up any rust that's hanging around.
I grew garlic from store bought bulbs and it did grow successfully, but the bulbs were rather small and had lots of small cloves instead of big chunky cloves. This year I will be growing both soft and hardneck from my local nursery and hopefully they’ll grow bigger this year
Thanks for the warnings about garlic-borne diseases! I definitely will not be planting grocery-store garlic! I think most of it in stores around here actually comes from Southern China or Spain, neither of which has a climate even remotely like mine (Zone 5B Canada)!
Damn it! I just got a couple cloves of organic garlic from the grocery store to plant. I planted some last year with success, but hearing that they can damage the soil, i will not plant them. I have 2 bulbs of hard neck saved from this year. I will just plant those. I am in Boston and plant the same time every year, 1st week of November, the 2nd to be exact.
@thecottagepeach I will plant a small amount. I will get some more hard neck from a friend also. Next year I will save more hard neck to replant. Thanks for the reply

I’m honestly thinking next year I’ll push it out to mid/late November. It just seems like everyone else has already planted theirs so I panic haha
@thecottagepeach In NE OH it doesn't seem to truly get cold until January anymore, so 🤷
When I learned to cook from my mom and my Yia Yia (my grandmother), we started with Olive Oil, and Garlic.... then, decided what we were cooking!
It’s a pretty good way to start things!

Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching! Good luck with your planting 🌱
Clever way to separate hardneck cloves! Great tip
Always looking for ways to make things easier! 😄

I bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised! Hardneck typically has much larger cloves than softneck
Very informative
Glad you found it helpful!
Why can't garlic be as easy to grow as spring onions :(
I find it very easy, sorry you’ve had trouble!

Oh yeah, definitely risky in colder zones like ours!
Here in San Diego we put them in a paper bag in the refrigerator for 30 days that usually works
Yeah just gotta get those chill hours in

It’s tricky because it *could* be fine, but if you’ve got some saved you can plant instead I’d definitely do that!

At least doubling the number of cloves. 🙌
It should be a law or something hahah
Maybe pure coincidence, but I am about to harvest my garlic. The plants have started to change colour to a pale green.
For hardneck I usually wait for the bottom 3-4 leaves to turn brown to harvest
@ they are well & truely past that…..
Although my mate who gave me the bulbs said its organic garlic, so expect smaller fists 🤔
