  • We review the Mitsubishi i-MiEV one of the first mass production electric vehicles. Released in 2009 as a fleet car this pure electric car is nearing it's 7th year in production. 12 days after our video Mitsubishi killed this car in America. RIP.

    Most couples have two cars anyway. So we have a Honda Odyssey and an i-miev. We drive the i-mi 90% of the time. The other 10% we drive when we go out of town. We fight over who gets to drive it.

      No. Two cars are a luxury that nost "most" couples have. Even in Switzerland where the peoples are earning 4'500$ a month, they generally ALL have one. But, in some societies, cars are too much cheap and peoples tend to go nuts.

      "Typical car guy", Gee thanks man... If I wanted the best efficiency, I'd take a nicer used Prius any day over this dated and overpriced pile of shit. And no, he doesn't drive a "cool rolling diesel truck". He's got a Honda S2000 now I believe.

    I would like to point out (if no one else has already) this car also has a fast charging port and can charged at a station in 30 minutes or so in a pinch. Still not as fast as refueling a gas car, but it's worth it because I rarely drive a long distance.

    A well done car review, it's quite spot on for the reality of the US. I've done about 2000 kilometers so far with the car after buying it 2nd hand. I bought a 2010 in NL, turns out the battery was broken, but it got replaced under warranty by Mitsubishi which was nice. So now I have a 5 year old car with a new battery fwiw.
    I drive this car daily to work and back for 40 miles, alone, and it works quite well for that. Since most roads in NL are about as smooth as it gets, the suspension doesn't bother me too much. I have a charge point at work too, so even after work I start with 60 miles of range again so I can make errands.
    I agree on the stereo, the speakers are quite allright, but I combined mine with a Pioneer Unit with BT for handsfree calling, because 230 euro fines. I don't care for any car included sat nav because my phone has Google maps and I can just yell a destination at my phone and it will understand what I meant.
    I was surprised I could fit the Maxi Cosi and the baby stroller with assorted stuff into the car. That was unexpected. Thank you Mitsubishi for including the ISOFIX mount as standard and a rear seat that folds in parts.
    From the review I gather your model didn't come with a Chademo plug, and being in the US doesn't help either. The default charger in NL is 3kW, so that's 6 hours from empty to full. And every now and again when we need to go further we use the Chademo chargers to charge the car for 10-20 minutes to get the range we need. 20 minutes is from empty to 80%, I'll survive for few days per year where I need it for 10 minutes to get home.
    Our petrol is $5,75 per gallon currently, and full electrics have no road taxes till 2020, I can't possibly get to work any cheaper while still staying dry and out of the wind, notice I didn't say warm. Then again, have you tried public transport lately.
    The heater, ah, yes, the heater. It varies from no warmth to luke warm, and how do you want your feet frozen? You could heat the feet, but then the windows fogs up. And didn't I mention you lose 20% of the range at -5c, with a new battery. hmmm. yes.
    My hope, is that I can "upgrade" in a few years time to the Kia Soul EV or maybe even a Chevrolet Bolt. I'd like more range, but I don't need more range currently. There is this thing with money, and numbers, it all got hazy for a bit, but I don't think it works out yet.
    If you pick this up as 2nd car 2nd hand and you could do far worse imho.

    Emm, I would say that i-MiEV does make sense if you have two vehicles in the family. On those rare occasions when somebody is really going further than possible on MiEV he/she can choose plan B.
    Here were I live it is possible to use iMiEV as only vehicle, ChaDeMo every 15 miles. It is not possible to run out of juice. But without rapid charging infrastructure iMiev is 60 mile vehicle - end of story.
    Price and quality does not add up unfortunately but they were first.

      @@acmotifs So far so good. But it does seem that the battery is declining a bit. Range has always dropped with the cold weather, not just from heater use, but because all battery chemistries are temperature sensitive. I'll know better in the warmer weather, when the usual range when recharged after an extended moderate speed run was ~80 miles.

    I can't believe I missed this video. It is amazing how far we have come in 3 years. 12 hours to charge an 60 mile range at 220 volts? wow. The Volt has more real world range.

      The i-MiEV actually could fast charge in 25-30 mins, they all had CHaDEMO fast charging. It wasn't mentioned in this video, he was talking about standard AC wall charging outlets.

      It's only about 8 hrs to charge at 110V, sitting in my driveway and charging overnight. As for range, the average daily use of a car in the U.S. is 27 miles. That 60 mile highway range is closer to 80 at 35-40 mph, and does 95% of my needs.

    I 1000% agree with Marisol about the ridiculousness of big cars that are mostly carrying ONE person. I specifically loved it when she mentioned "suburbs". If you look at human communities/societies there's a "thing" about suburbs and how they are at their very root inefficient but it was pushed out to people for the baby boom generation.
    Ultimately, if people want to live for the next X number of years, they will NEED to be counting their miles like their calories; it's a perfect analogy. If you are 350lbs and diabetic, you NEED to do those things because you've been leaving like a lazy slob for the past 30 years and now it's time to pay your dues treating your body like a fucking circus. The exact same thing is happening with the environment, I won't go hugging trees but when I see obvious wasting of energy, I call it out.

    I own a 2012 I-Miev. Make no mistake, it is a "utilitarian" commuter car, plain and simple. I have zero regrets, since 99.9% of my travel is within my own town. The best part is I only paid $6,500 for it used with 20,000 miles and is still under factory warranty. If I need to travel far, I have two choices, a PT Cruiser or my Ford Excursion with a V-10 engine.

      Notwithstanding the car's shortcomings, nothing else can beat a used i-MiEV for cheap motoring. Get a used one for $6,500 and for about $1.28, (the price of charging the car's 16kWh battery @ 8 cents per kWh) this car can go 60-75 miles on a charge, and with zero maintenance for 100,000 miles or more. Smart indeed.

    Great video, love the shallow ignorance of the mechanic not actually thinking about real usage cycles for a daily driver, and Marisol's intelligent driving. Our i-MiEV now has 140k miles. These guys didn't seem to realize how much variability there was between different battery designs. i-MiEV batteries are far superior to the LEAF design in terms of longevity. And by the way- lithium battery capacity loss has nothing to do with efficiency. My car is more efficient than when new, due to looser bearings, but of course, it doesn't go as far.

    In Europe this car takes to fully charge, 6 hours from the standard socket that you have at home, and only 30 minutes in fast charge point

    Love the dramatic intro....and the Couples Review....and "...'89 Ford Festiva". That car was a cockroach. There are still several running around the backwoods of Arkansas. It is a total beast off road. Abused it like a Rally Car.

    Got a 2012 SE used with 8k for $7400. Other than getting the snow tires put on/off car hasn't cost me anything for the last two years.
    I drive daily to work 20 miles round trip and get three days out of it with charge to spare. Winter time is an issue as heater drains charge fast.

    The Citroen version of this car has been chosen by the city of Nice on the french riviera as shared city car public service. And it's fantastic. The car is perfect for a city drive. Silence, compact but offering great interior space. Fun to dive. It's a car designed for Japaneese or european cities. I can understand why us drivers don't like it. It does not match their needs.
    The ony real issue is de battery life. It lasts more than 2 years though. But even if it's 5 who wants a car with 5 years of life expectancy?
    The trouble is that it's not all the battery. A few cells go bad and ruin the charge of all the set. In the future, there should be a service to detect and chande the damaged cells at an affordable cost.
    It's not an easy task with the i-miev. You have to take all the massive battery pack out of the car, disassemble each cell (not designed to be taken apart), test each cell, replace the bad ones and do the same work backwards. Not cost effective.
    The dianostic need to be done by the computer of the car and the cells need to be easy to take apart.

      My c-zero has already 5 years old and the battery is as new... still 120km of range. Warranty covers 8 years, but i expect to have it ok up to 10 years. This is not a cellphone battery.

    yes yes, 5 minutes to fill up a gas car. But the point is, when you come home/at work with an EV, it takes you only 30 seconds to plug it in and 30 seconds to plug it out. The time between these 30 seconds you can use to sleep, work, enjoy your family.
    On the road, charging is much faster, again plug it in, go for a coffee, go to the toilet, plug it out and you are good to go for another hour of highway driving.

    This little car bring me to an idea : "have you every wanted to test out those popular kei-cars they have in Japan ?"
    Those are cars that never go tested outside of Japan/Pakistan/India... It would be interesting to have your point of view on that.

    He brought up the Ford Excursion and I laughed because that's my main vehicle (and I LOVE it) and I'm just looking for a second car to take 25 miles to work and back (and I can charge it at work) so I'm not using $50+ in gas a day. If I got it, talk about polar opposites!

    I knew someone who's first car was a 1996 Mitsubishi Diamante. She had the same issues with burning oil and whatnot, but it was definitely a decent looking car. She had it from 2003-2006, and she actually regretted trading it in for a Lincoln LS.

    Grip is fine. It has plenty if range for about 90% of the public. Most people do not live that far from services and work. yeah, some live too far, but that is not everyone. Cars came with that size wheel stock for a very long time, and many do today as well. With the incentives and rebates these are about 12-15 grand depending on what state you live in and buy it. I drove it and liked it a lot. This is a very well made car. Just not a performance car, lots of torque and good view outside. Spacious. This car has a far more nicer dash than a Festiva. Can you recall the controls for the climate control? Buy one of these used, they have changed little, and they are only 6-7 grand. People can sit just fine in the back seat if they are not huge. Fold the seat, it is spacious.

    3 Things
    1: your cameraman Deserves a FUCKING oscar, hes basically the 80% of why i subscribed the chanell i mean COME ON, he made that ugly...fucking hideous piece of shit look GOOD !! o_o thats impressive on many levels.
    2: Mitsubishi made me fall in love with the 2g Eclipse, Lost me when they stopped production for the 4g eclipse and Lancer ( and kind of when i saw the weight of the 4g .... ) and now this ? , damm they the shittiest brand in the market ( even lower than some chinese brands im not gonna name )
    3 :i wish a big brand bought mitsubishi and remake the Eclipse and Lancer but lighter and sexyer

    In a sense this car was way ahead of its time when it comes to small city vehicles. Even today we would see someone trying to come with a revolutionary ultra tiny urban vehicle for like one or two persons, but merely smaller than this. The Japanese have mastered building tiny yet very practical cars with their "kei" cars (this one not necessarily the most practical), often way more spacious and practical than even big SUVs, that is for traveling around tight, crowded urban areas.

    Glad to see you haven't changed your videos too much since youtube told you us millennials don't have the attention span to watch a 20 min video. The in depth, honest reviews are why I enjoy the channel so much.
    About the i-miev........until battery tech improves (or Tesla becomes affordable) I would much rather have something along the lines of a 1.0L fiesta. It would not only be great in the city but also for the commute from the suburbs that millions of us make daily. Its just a more practical solution for "Americans" imo

    With the goose theme, I thought you were a Canadian channel. P.S. I'm one of the few people who were incredibly sad to see the i-MiEV go away. We need an affordable electric, and this proved to be affordable in 2012, many years before Tesla even had a viable product. If they would have slightly updated the car and upgraded the battery (battery costs have come way down), Mitsubishi may have had the first $20k EV with a 40kWh battery in North America (and range that could have gotten close to 300km), which would be a big winner. The format of the car is actually very decent, shoulder room of 54 inches is actually class leading. Two areas I think Mitsu could have improved: get the 4 tires upgraded to standard 15" wheels (something like 185/55 15" which is standard on compact cars) instead of thin front design, upgraded the interior (those seats need some new fabrics), and added a 40kWh battery pack. The same basic fundamental vehicle with its industry leading 54" shoulder room would have been a win. Instead, its cancelled. :(

      In spring we are attempting to focus on more of this. But its extremely difficult to not only secure them but to actually get approval to track them, rent track. But... Gonna do it and make it good.

      No they build overhead into the packs so they don't die in two years they die in 10 or lose so much efficiency you have to replace them proactively.

    A couple of questions and comments:
    How much range would you need ? I'd love to see a profile of your driving for a week or two.
    Perhaps you should mention the 20 minute quick charge. since you mentioned the 20 hour charge.
    I have to admit this little car is a bit of a one trick pony but it's a hell of a trick.

    I decided to subscribe to your channel today per your “numbers” video. But I am kind of disappointed by the mostly false claim that EV batteries will need to be replaced like a phone every few years. With modern EVs being on the road for 10 years now there’s plenty of data showing degradation isn’t a huge problem with rare outliers like Nissan Leafs in Arizona. Maybe that wasn’t clear in 2015, so I’ll cut you some slack if the review of the Mach-E is good

    EVs have tremendous potential. It's all about that torque. It's instantaneous, and even if the peak numbers aren't as high as your gas guzzler, the area under the curve is so much greater.
    I wouldn't even say the range is the issue. The issue is the cost. If the car were cheap enough that I wouldn't mind renting a vehicle for the few times I need to drive to another state, I'd buy an EV. But at 20+ no way. No way at all.
    Rumor has it the next Koenigsegg will be a hybrid. Their V8 clutched to an electric motor, no transmission. If the car is at high enough speeds, the engine starts up, drives the car and charges the batteries.

    I think the bare minimum for electric range is at least 100 miles in Maryland you can drive 60 miles in just doing some errands and for it to take 6 hours to charge is way too long something like a Nissan leaf is ok you get over 100 miles and charging is quick.

    I agree 100% until they aren't stuck with laughable range and/or long charging times these will be trendy green cars for people who want to talk about their trendy green car. It's never about saving gas money when you have to spend 25k on a car and arguably still need another vehicle for the non-commuting days.
    Have you driven a volt before? Aside from being expensive (and styling is subjective), I think it's my favorite of the reasonably affordable electric cars. For the short commuting days, it doesn't use any gas and works just like this, the Kia, leaf, etc. but for those days you and Scott want to have a picnic in the country, your romantic getaway doesn't have to be spoiled by range anxiety. My sister in law has one, and I drove it a couple of times. In keeping that these types of cars are not intended for any performance driving, I found that it was a solid commuter car. Cargo was nice, decent interior room and didn't feel like a rental car in any way.

      +Ndogg550 I have never driven Volt and really like the concept as it makes the most sense in this age of in betweener cars. You don't have any of the range phobia. Although I'd prefer all electric any day because you don't have to worry about having to deal with gas motor, electric motor and the tuning, ECU and drive train complications. We will likely get to test the Bolt and Volt in 2016 that should be interesting. We can picnic together in those for sure. how many miles does she have on it?

      +savagegeese not sure about mileage but had it since year one (4yrs ago?) Actually Chevrolet gave them an insane buyback offer towards a new one so they got a nearly identical one on the 3rd model year (about 2yrs ago). The offer was good enough that after the rebate/incentive and GM loyalty they only paid about 5k for a brand new car after driving the first for 35-40k. Which, once you figure in the eventual battery replacement cost, they hit a reset button.
      I'd say combined between two nearly identical Volts, she has driven one for 65k miles. Loves it. She honestly only has to put a tank of gas in it about once per 5-6 weeks. But even on road trips it still gets really good mileage when the "generator" is on. Also, They installed a 240v plug in the garage, etc and charging is easily taken care of while sleeping.
      I'd say that she will likely use something like this indefinitely until the "new" solution cars come around. Not a "driving enthusiast" so that's not a downside for her.

    Batteries with a modern temperature and power regulation system degrade 10 to 12% by 500,000 miles now. That's the reality now. Of course your cell phone and laptop are killing their batteries after a couple of hours. That's because there is very little battery management system - just no room.

      I have it on good authority that the Mitsubishi i-Miev has quite an advanced BMS. So advanced that during Chademo charging, the Airconditioning will kick in and start to cool the battery pack - to protect said pack.
      Same thing during regular use on a hot day - use the AC to protect your battery pack.
      Even my ancient 2008 Prius has an AC which once activated on a hot day will direct chilled air through the battery pack to cool it down and protect it. I still have the original NiMH battery pack in my 12 year old Prius Hybrid, degradation is negligible and just last summer I managed 68.1mpg from 43.5 litres of fuel - the car went 641 miles before refuelling. (All UK figures).
      The Mitsubishi BMS in the i-Miev is exceptional, and the batteries, except in truly extreme climatic situations will be well protected and last quite a while.
      There’s no denying though - a 60 mile range is a bit low - but I’d buy one in a heart beat for use in London.

      No 2018 model though. It's deservedly gone. If it had double the range, maybe people could have overlooked some of it's other shortcomings. 60 miles is a damn joke. That's when new and under ideal conditions. Most of the time you're lucky to get 60 I'd imagine.

    skinny tire has nothing to do with it you need more rubber between the rim and the road . thats why i took the low pro tires off mine and put 1998 13 inch rims on ..ride is night and day the traction is great rang is the same . know your facts. keep in mind is an economy car .

    Maybe it's the thought that counts?
    Whatever the case may be, this car, while having a good idea in mind, is not quite right for the Canadian or American market. I think EVs are a good solution to some energy issues we face with traditional petrol-based or diesel-based cars, but they have to be executed well to properly compete with much more established gasoline competition - the i-MiEV just doesn't do that.
    If this little guy was given a 0.8 or 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo engine, or even a higher powered motorcycle engine it would've been a lot more sensible as a commuting car. Not to mention it would've attracted a fair few more buyers and range wouldn't have been an issue.
    I guess Mitsu is really kicking themselves these days in the Western markets.

    "Phillipe" is not being sensationalistic (19:02). His comments are fair. I had a passing fascination with the simplicity of the i-MiEV but bought a used B250 electric which was SO much more car for not much more money. Literally, my EV is a Mercedes compared to this thing. For those on a very limited budget however, the i-MiEV is a great upgrade from riding an electric bicycle. You'll stay warmer in winter, with less chance of an icy patch tossing you over the handlebars.

    This video is spot on! I made the mistake of buying one of these and I really regret it. I mean, I'm the type that likes to roll up my sleeves, go out to the garage and work on it. I love doing oil changes. In fact, I love the smell of oil. It really bums me out that I can't do that anymore. And then there's the drivetrain. There's like only two moving parts in this tin toy, the rotor and reduction gear. Nothing else. I should have done my research. A few of my friends work at the parts store and I don't see them anymore. I bought some windshield wiper blades and my bud says "where the hell have you been". And I'd love to modify the car, but it's already faster than the gasoline version so what's the point. It's useless. Another bummer is I miss stopping for my 64 ounce Soda at the corner gas station. If I do stop the guy kind of looks at me strange when I give him $1.29 and say "that's all". It sucks.
    So now I'm stuck with this tin toy I probably can't sell or do anything else with, except drive it. All my friends keep wanting to drive it. Maybe they'll wreck it for me and bail me out! I better go buy some insurance. At least the insurance is cheaper than on the gas car.

      +Ed Hunter Well, there was this one time that I went and insulated the hoses for the heater, but I didn't get any oil on my hands that I couldn't get off, just some sand.
      Waiting for the car being charged is also a hassle, I now have to go eat a sandwich a hurry up because the car is done at the fast charger before I'm even done having my order taken at the fastfood joint.

      +Kefuddle Thats good, very good! Lithium batteries have a finite life of discharge/recharge cycles, sensitive to temperatures and killing them dead. Its not a matter of if its when and in a car with vibration, temp extremes, constant/daily discharging recharging it takes it's toll.

    shoe horn a judd v8 with a Hollinger sequential 6 speed gearbox and and r230 Nissan 300zx diff and chopped down subframe and shortened 300zx driveshafts, I reckon you might need to add some wide body mods otherwise you will run into CV joint and suspension travel issues, if you can get around this you will have yourself one very loud , very fast car.
    Then all you need to figure out is how to keep the front wheels on the ground. and if you feel guilty about converting an electric car into a CO2 CO factory you could always utilize the electric motors for ERS , if the left wing tree hugging greenies give you a hard time, all you need to do is explain that the electric motors are incorporated in an energy recovery system and they now power the fuel pumps that feed fuel to the new engine and there is a surplus of 10 watts that powers the interior light.
    I'm puzzled as to why Mitsubishi doesn't offer the i-MIEV platform in this guise.

    This video is totally downing this car! I own one and I can tell you that the way this guys describes this car is totally off base! Period! ... 1) Mitsubishi set out to make the cheapest electric car and they achieved that. Where you expecting every amenity in the cheapest electric car?.... 2) The car makes absolute sense if it fits your life style. The average person drives approximately 20-25 miles per day, to work. I drive 8-10 miles, round trip, a day. Again, it works for me. ....3) It makes absolutely no sense that a single person or couple should be driving around in 6-7K pound vehicle. It's a waste of gas, oil and most of all, the steel. Simple transportation is the way to go, and the iMiev does just that. In the 90's, when the EV1 ,by General Motors, came out, the average person wanted the Hummer instead. In this country, it's all about status and 0 common sense! People are okay with driving an SUV that gets 12 mpg and then laugh at the iMiev? Really? .....4) Owners of this vehicle will see between 65 -100 miles on a single charge depending on driving habits, terrain, weather, etc. But this also applies to gas powered cars! ..... 5) You can't compare this car to your cell phone! People use their cell phones ALL day long and they are on ALL day long. How is the iMiev the same? It isn't. You go to work, with your car, and shut it off. Again, it's not on all day long. ...6) If you don't use the 240v rapid chargers on these, you will get longevity out of the battery. Any lithium battery that is charged rapidly, instead of a slow charge, will have a shorter life span. This is common knowledge. 7) This electric car was made in a simplistic form. Try repairing the gadgets in a Leaf, Prius or high end electric cars! Yeah, you will learn to appreciate the simple iMiev. ...... Bottom Line: If you're looking to buy an electric car and don't want to break the bank, the iMiev is the way to go!

      I also have a 2012 I Miev and what that say about charge times.... from 0 to 100% with the stock 8 amp charger takes me only 16 hrs.. i get 55 miles driving it as hard as i like.. a lot of mis info here!

    7:45 About the resale value, it's not either of those reasons. The reason is that they were bought (or much more likely leased) with state tax credit rebates. Others with an additional state tax rebate.
    Unfortunately, you can't knock off over $7500 off the price of your car and sell it as the car that didn't get that price cut. I think that goes along the lines of fraud. The benefit for the actually artificially low resale price is that it can go in the hands of the majority of drivers a lot more quickly. The demographic that would need these cars the most. Smaller, more efficient, less energy and materially exhaustive cars are the better direction to go on, but car journalists/reviewers don't appreciate that value.
    Don't want to sound fan-boyish, but the i-MiEV is Mitsubishi's most reliable car. That's for a frickin' Mitsubishi.
    Trust me, this myth of EV resale value has been swimming around since 2012, it's been done and dusted.

    Making fun of the I-MiEV? That is stupid. My I-MiEV is from 2011, Battery degradation is less than 10% - I drive it 80 km (49m) everyday to and from work. I charge OVERNIGHT, so I never have to spend a single minute (plus detour) at stinking fuel station. I-MiEV can be charged at a quickcharger in 20 min. (but i never do that). I-MiEV has an optional breakoutbox: You can power your home from the battery in an emergency! Electricity is so cheap compared to gas - I can just laugh. Tax: None, Insurance: 200bhp) at a traffic light. And doing it with a nice Star Wars Pod Racer sound. My old car was an mitsu evo, that I never could really push to the limits, which I can now.
    To sum up:
    ridiculesly cheap to run
    extreme fun to drive
    it is so narrow: you can squease through traffic like a motor bike

      You nailed it. He makes fun...but hes having FUN driving. Thats what fun is, fighting with the car a bit, feel the road. His smile when pushing gives him away, its a wider grin than many sportscars...

    i am always have been a big fan of Hydrogen power cars because of 2 reason. EV have a high battery replacement cost and life expectancy. 2: It takes 5 min. to fill with hydrogen for a 300 mile range. check out Toyota"s Maria

    The good side of charging electric cars is that you don't have to go to a specialized place to do it. You can do it at your job's parking lot and at home (depending on where you work). Then it takes even less of your time than putting gas in.
