    There are tons of so called car reviewers. But this is different. You are actually reviewing the car literally. Nobody is putting cars on lifts and looking at build quality. I appreciate that, to me that matters.

    for you young people who where born after 1990...Nissan has been using the 4 door sports car theme since 1989 with the 1990 Maxima SE. I think they where the first to do this SE 4 door sports car so I guess they just keep the name for history purposes

    9:10 Scott is a real wordsmith... BTW I have owned 3 Maximas and the 2011 I have now has three "shift" manners. Driving in D there are no shifts whatsoever. If you have it in sport mode and then push the gas pedal more than 40% you'll get fake shifting. But in reference to your claim on "inconsistency" I'll point out that the gas pedal has a virtual button at 99% travel. If you push the pedal to the floor hard you'll activate the button, it becomes shiftless, delivering maximum emergency acceleration and goes to its about 6500 RPM redline. Floor it at 99% (no floor button push) and it'll rev to about 5600 RPM and fake shift. This is not as hard on the engine of course and is "sportier". The 2016 may be different but I'm betting this is how it works, and I like it.

    • @savagegeese

      Too much programming for something defeats the entire purpose of the CVT.

    • @hangingoutwiththeparks5739
      @hangingoutwiththeparks5739 6 років тому +1

      I've owned 3 Maximas as well and currently have the 2011. 2605155 you're spot on with how the CVT responds to acceleration. The only thing I'd add is that when you're in sport mode and quickly accelerate, while already in motion, the CVT changes ratio as it normally does on its way to the optimal power ratio with momentary pauses at programmed ratios to give the driver the sensation of gear changes. Which doesn't result in a loss of power, only a delay in reaching the optimal power ratio of the CVT because the vehicle's acceleration never decreases. Just my 2 cents.

    I know this is an old video, but I bought a used 2019 SL because of this review. Geese sold me on this versus the Ford Fusion Sport. Interior beat the snot out of the Ford and honestly, Maxima FELT faster; not sure it was, but it felt it. Has more than enough performance to inject some fun in my drive to work! Love the car!

    • @Gropmag215

      How do you like it after several months of ownership. How's the CVT?

    • @TheJimmyPops
      @TheJimmyPops 2 роки тому +2

      @@Gropmag215 It's been a great car honestly, I'm very happy with it.
      I came off a short stint with a 2016 Camaro SS, so the performance isn't in the same ballpark, but I also don't have to worry about the torque converter exploding either.
      The Maxima has a little of everything; top-notch interior space, plenty of features on the SL trim (though I think the 2020 adds some more standard safety features), rides and handles very well for its size, and has enough oomph to keep things fun enough.
      I've had no issues with the CVT. My wife has had a 2012 Nissan Juke for years and had no issues either, so I don't harbor the same worry about Nissan CVT's that most people do. The one in the Maxima seems to live up to Geese's review; it responds quickly and besides the occasional high-rev holds he points out, doesn't give you any nonsense.
      The used card dealer I got it from also put a free 100,000 mile, 5 year powertrain warranty, so that really eliminated any potential worries about CVT reputations.

    • @Gropmag215
      @Gropmag215 2 роки тому

      @@TheJimmyPops that sounds great! I'm not in the market to buy now, but maybe in a few years. I'm still trying to crank out 20yrs with my civic (on 15 lol). I like the Nissans, especially since they apparently have a reputation for comfortable rides. I don't have any experience driving a CVT, so I'm unsure why the majority hate them.

    • @TheJimmyPops
      @TheJimmyPops 2 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure it's just a "feel" thing. CVT's don't make the typical noises, or have the same behavior, so if having the more "classic" sounds and feel are of vital importance, CVT's will feel weird; traditional automatics have more of a "rhythm" to their behavior which I think most people tend to appreciate more.
      I wouldn't want one in a tried and true sports car, since CVT's typically don't respond the same when you mash the gas, but the Maxima also isn't a sports car, it's a sporty sedan, and I think people forget that about it.

    I miss the stickshift Maxima. My dad had a 95 SE, 5 speed, triple black. He never really pushed it. Had a younger uncle come and take me out in it.... I will never forget it. It was the first time I experienced a car at WOT. It was fast and loud. I was 10, maybe 11. That changed my life.
    After I got older I got to appreciate the Maxima for what it really was. A Japanese Bonneville. Spacious AF, fast AF, comfortable but competent. And the stickshift (which was admittedly awful) dialed up the engagement a good bit. Nice to see the equal length secondaries on the y pipe.... it will sound sick uncorked. But that CVT has to go. Looks like they really covered all the other bases though. Interiors have always been a strong point for the Maxima.

    Got one in 2017 pre-owned, 12K miles. I notice the same exact thing. If you take off from a standstill with your foot on the floor, there are no fake shift points. The fake shifts come during what I'd call more spirited driving. The same applies on the highway. I've taken it from 55-100MPH several times with zero synthetic shift points. However, if you let off the gas even for a fraction of a second, it reverts to the fake shifting. Whatever. There is some rhyme to the reason, methinks. VERY fast car for a $22K certified pre-owned with only 12k miles on it.

When you floor it it will "auto shift" at around 5500-6k rpm, if you push down past the "floor" until you hear/feel a click it doesn't auto-shift and will rev the engine to 6700 rpm where it makes peak horse power.

    I always found it funny that the previous Nissan Maxima and the 370z had the same mpg of 16/26. This CVT and upgraded 3.5L bumps it up to 22/30. Since the prior Maxima had the 3.5L, I thought Nissan would put the 370z's 3.7L V6 and 7 speed auto with rev matching in the 2016 Maxima. That would sure make it fly, but I guess they were shooting for fuel economy, and they didn't want to steal some of Infiniti's thunder, whatever that's left.

    Thanks for a great review! Good technical detail with intelligently framed pros and cons. I found this very informative and was happy to find that I accidentally lucked out buying a great car without understanding a lot about its technical aspects.
    Apart from my ill-fated dream car folly experience with an Olds Aurora, (ouch!) I have been a Toyota-Honda fan for over 30 years, but I traded my 2012 Avalon for one of these Maximas in May and have been a walking ad for the Platinum ever since. After test driving an Avalon Hybrid, a Hyundai Genesis and some kind of Kia, I came to the Nissan dealer with a list of features that my ideal car would have. My primary concern was comfortable seats and blind spot warning. The Avalon's seats were deadly for my back on long trips. The salesman ticked off all my dream car features , and then oh by the way, it also has remote start, LED headlights and it drives like a sports car. I was pumped. The seats, my biggest requirement, turned out to be fantastically comfy! I figured this would be way out of my price range, but was pleasantly surprised when we came to a deal--more than I'd ever paid for a car, but if this is what it takes to get good seats, well...
    I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything you had to say, particularly about the seats, handling and performance. It is a fun car to drive, particularly for someone who has never owned a sports car--well I had a Supra--but just enjoys driving. The main handling differences I noticed right away were how well it corners with no tire squeal even at 35 mph or so, and how well it stops with no feeling of diving. The "fly by wire" feeling works for me. Nissan seems to use some sort of intelligent braking software.
    I love all the safety features, ICC cruise, FEB, sonars, cameras and MOD warnings since I often park in very tight parking lots. I had never had a car with CVT, so I was naive about the drawbacks. It is good to learn from your discussion that the Maxima has a good one. There are so many little details that make this car very user friendly. For example, the fuel filler door has no release button or cable. You just push the fuel door to open, providing the car is unlocked. Blind spot warning beeps if you use turn signal when there is a danger. The rear seats fold all the way down. Trunk will open for someone without key when doors are unlocked. Active noise cancellation--turns off in sport mode! The mirror dimming is the best I've seen. When in ICC mode, to pass you just activate the turn signal and the car begins to accelerate. Very cool. The glove box is huge. The "puddle lights" by the doors are very useful. You can easily mute the sonar warnings when backing up just by pressing the arrow button on the steering wheel. The wipers have always been an annoyance in every car I've owned, but these are the quietest I've ever had in a car. LED headlights are amazing. 18 gallon gas tank!
    I just got back from a 1,000 mile trip. Average mileage for the complete interstate and in town trip was 35 mpg. I get 23-27 mpg driving around town. The intelligent cruise is remarkably accurate and works down to a complete stop. It takes a lot of pressure off of boring interstate driving.
    I could go on and on, but long story short, I found my ideal car.

      I think the car is under rated. I think having a different trans option would help give it more credibility for those who hate CVTs. It definitely has some of the best seats of any mainstream car and it has so much to like. I hope that the ownership experience for you stays good and problem free.

      I bought my white Maxima Platinum in May 2016. Nissan people at dealership have been very friendly to me. Free wash any time I go there, free oil changes and service checks for warranty period. Nissan financing was quite surprisingly simple and flawlessly done. I have had zero problems so far with the car. I am still finding little surprise design features that make this a very user friendly car. As an electrical engineer, I find that Nissan guys have totally rethought everything to make life easier, even down to the gas filler door, and the multi-function control for the display screen, for example.
      Anyone who hates CVTs should drive one of these. This is a whole different animal from what I have read. I do have a little torque steer on high acceleration, but I'm now used to it. There is never the annoying downshift jump that I used to get in automatic transmissions when accelerating hard from low speed. In sport mode, the response is even better and the steering is more like a sports car. It should be stressed that this is not a Corvette or a Bugatti Chiron, but it's sure a lot of fun to drive. 0-60 mph in about 6 seconds. That's 1 G! Do I sound like I love this car? LOL I still take it out for a spin on back roads once in a while just for the fun of it.
      The voice recognition is pretty bad, compared to Alexa etc. Headlights are amazing. Seats are the best on long trips. I traded a 2012 Avalon whose seats were very uncomfortable. Heating and air conditioning, no complaints. Cell phone hands free BlueTooth, excellent quality. Navigation map and GPS entry, larger screen, are greatly improved over my previous experience with Avalon.
      The first thing I noticed when I did a test drive was how the thing corners with ease at high speed, and does not dive in a panic stop. Very strange feeling, but exhilarating. Apparently, brakes are applied by computer to avoid oversteer/understeer and diving. I love the cameras (inc. 360 degree), the radars (front, rear and side blind spot) remote start, heated steering wheel and seats and most of all the intelligent cruise. Accent lighting is cool. Finally nearly totally quiet windshield wipers! One of my pet peeves over the years.
      My mileage on a 1000 mile trip was 35 mpg, which included interstate and in town driving. Interstate at 75 mph was often 40 mpg on flat stretches and even higher when drafting a semi using the intelligent cruise.
      The NissanConnect service, similar to ONSTAR, could be improved, but I bought it anyway. I have Sirius XM which I could not live without, and their data stream for weather and gas prices too, which leaves a bit to be desired.
      All in all, I have become pretty much of a walking advertisement for Nissan after being sold on Toyota for many years. (Supra, and 2 Avalons) Nissan's emphasis on safety features is the wave of the future.

    Re: CVT inconsistency
    The Accord's CVT is set up for full throttle = full power (holding rpm at peak horsepower). Anything less than full throttle and you get the fake gear changes.
    I didn't mind the fake changes when I drove one mainly because I was happy to have less of the rubber band/droning of older CVTs.

    Ha ha. Update. I got one of these for a rental. Disregard my comments on the CVT, it was easily the best thing about this car IMO. It takes a little time to understand how it works, but I thought it was brilliant. Basically if you give it anything less than full throttle I think it does the fake shifts. But if you want max power it holds at redline. At least that's how I remember it working.
    I have driven the best autos the game has to offer (ZF8, VW & Ferrari DCT).... but it was this transmission that edged me over to break my 7 car manual streak and get an automatic. And actually, if these were in my price range equipped how I wanted, I might have got one. But I got a G37 instead. This was really an awesome 7-8/10ths car.... perfect street car.

      Yeah, I totally get that side of it. That preference for piecing together his views on your own makes the difference between seeing the car from his overall view, and seeing it through an interpretation of his prior bullet points. I, personally, watch his videos for his unique perspective. Him not providing a conclusive ending that defines the car as something outside of the sum of its parts, as he outlined in prior sections, detracts from my understanding of his overall point-of-view about the identity of the car as a whole. It's easy to go through and talk about the exterior, interior, and the experience of driving the car, but to go beyond that and really define what the car is - beyond those empirical things - is what I want to see more of; though he touched on the unique factor of the car briefly in the beginning of the video. But, I am probably just being over analytical and pedantic lol.

    With regard to the fake shifting CVTs, THANK YOU! Why? Adding complications and lose the advantage of CVT, and most of the time you can't turn off the fake shifting.
    As for the inconsistency I believe it's the same way newer Subarus are. With light throttle it acts like CVT, with moderate to heavy throttle it fake shifts, however if you floor it, it'll revert back to CVT to give the best acceleration.

    Glad you liked it. While I don't like Nissan's exterior design language, the rest of the car seems pretty great for the intended audience. I have owned 3 Maximas in my teenage years due to insurance reasons I was stuck with 4-door cars for a while. I had a 89, 92 and a 99. They were all great for what they were. While I never bought I to the 4dsc thing, it was far more engaging to drive than its competitors, so I guess there's that.
    I really hate cvt's, and am sorry they have eliminated other offerings. Hell I had a 5spd in one of my old Maximas, and loved that car. That said, I see this as the best choice of the non-driver sedans, as opposed to a wannabe sports sedan. In that regard, since dynamics aren't as important as comfort and ergonomics, it seems ace.

I had a hand me down 89 from my parents when I turned 16, then sold it to buy a 300zx a couple years later. Once I realized I couldn't afford insurance on a RWD sports car I bought a better version of my last maxima - that was the 5spd SE one. It was honestly faster than my fr-s in a straight line. It started falling apart after beating on it for a couple years. I still couldn't afford to own a ZX so I bought a 99 maxima. It got tboned and then I started buying random piles after that.

    The best part of the Altima CVT is flooring it, then waiting for the CVT to spin up, before it finally takes off. You can almost feel the belt moving from the economy band to the power band. Compared to a Camry Hybrid, the 2.5L is underwhelming, especially up hills.
    And the CVT belt breaks every 90,000 miles, have fun with those repairs.

      My maxima’s cvt went 150k before going into limp mode and the belt was still intact. Also when you floor it at speed, it instantly jumps to a different ratio almost feeling like a regular auto. You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about.

  • @bUtMyRiGhTs

    It's not inconsistent your foot is just being inconsistent on the accelerator. It uses very sensitive inputs but it also takes into account if you're turning or not.
    *The peak Torque is at 4,250RPMs* you shouldn't be holding the RPMs at 6k. Learn how to drive a CVT.
    When you are actively using the accelerator and not just holding it to the floor you will get better performance out of the CVT and more consistent use.
    The reason cvts fake shift when you hold the gas to the floors because the engineer's program that in when they think the user is stupid. The accelerator on CVT equipped vehicle does not control so much acceleration/speed, but the desired RPM output. It doesn't just make you go faster, it lets you set the output from the engine directly which then affects your speed.
    *Try keeping the RPMs at Peak torque output while Feathering/modulating the accelerator* to keep it in that area as the vehicle goes through turns or comes under load. It's like a game, keep the needle between 4250-4500 RPMs.
