A lot of this has to do with that silicone dampener in the Keychron. Those acoustics are changed drastically when you add dampening material. As far as the space bar on your Drop Alt, that could be fixed by clipping and lubing the stabs. Could also be a wire balancing issue. To fix the ping and echo inside of the Drop Alt, simply adding some case foam (or even cheapo poly-fil) will help. As will a tape mod on the bottom of the PCB. I think where I am going here is that you can make a really bad keyboard sounds pretty good with the right mods. But not having to do all of that and have it the way you like it out of the box is always nice. Inevitably, what will happen is that as you get into keyboards, you will start doing mods like above to tweak the sound profile and feel of your typing experience. Much like using an EQ for headphones!

For the Drop Alt in addition to the other mods mentioned, I also recommend a little tape on the case where the stabilizers clip in to make the tolerances a little tighter!
this is a rather late reply, but i must add: the drop alt is a keyboard with a low-profile case, which means that you don't have a whole lot of space to add modifications like foam or tape. it's definitely easier to mod your keyboard with higher profile cases like with the q3, at least with some of the more commonly performed mods out there 👍
You should have also listed the gasket mount as a huge reason to the “soft” and bouncy feel and poppy sound of the board

The Q3 is a great board. Modding it makes a world of difference. Added a layer of PE foam at the bottom of the case, tape modded, and did a force break. AWESOME sound and feel.

I actually received my Keychron Q2 with knob a couple weeks ago and I completely agree with what you stated.
I had used $300 Logitech keyboards, some duckys, and many other "mech" keyboards that are nowhere close to as satisfying to type on.
First thing I did was tell my fiance I need to buy 4 of them and have set up around the house to type everywhere, lol.
There's definitely a crossover between headphone modding and keyboard modding that I find oddly satisfying. Would take a Q3 as a nice upgrade tomorrow.

Fantastic review! Just got my Q5 and it is awesome! Love everything about it!
i ordered my q3 as soon as i saw that a TKL Layout was available in the Q Line, i enjoyed it very much straight out of the box. Then i discovered the modding scene and with a few simple mods this keyboard got to a whole new level. I installed a force brake (fancy for some tape between the metal top and bottom housing for dampening), Tape / Tempest Mod and then i lubed my switches. Every single mod made a noticible aprovement to the board, and i am now at a point where i like typing on this board so much that i probably have to buy a second one for work, just because i cannot use a "normal" keyboard anymore, even if it was "mechanical"
Been using this for 6 months, all the fuzz about the case ping had me doubting my purchase, but once i started using it: i just dont hear it, and i never bothered doing the tape mod.
I have the K4 V2 from keychron and I love it, although I didn't like the standard keycaps, they felt fragile and hollow, so I got a random set of amazon and it made a big difference even though they are still just Double-shot ABS. The next thing I want to do is the tape and foam mod before I start looking at some PBT keycaps, new switches, and anything else there is to do/try. Have a chat with Brian and I'm sure he will talk you into trying these things as well.

Initially, but you can easily spend thousands on keyboards between various keycap sets, artisan keys, and custom boards.
I hate to say this publicly but the keyboard I have sitting on my desk right now cost me upwards of $1500. It's by no means as much as I've spent on my audio set up but it's sure as shit not cheap, either. Most people would call me insane for spending that much on a keyboard.
the two hobbies are basically connected now, even Crin did a stream with Switch and Click

I like how you are into keyboard hobby too, the "simplest" mods that can be done on keyboards to me are lubing the switches and stabs, putting extra dampening foam on the case, changing the keycaps and tape mod the pcb. I feel like they are gonna change the sound to like 180 degrees. I do that on my cheap 60% keyboard and its already sounded a lot better than the stock, I know lubing can be tedious at times. Obviously, I didnt stop there, I also add switch pads (can be a bit tedious, same with lubing), change the mounting style (from tray mount to gasket mount) by buying a new case.
It’s great to see more and more youtubers join the keyboard hobby. I’m excited to see the things you will do in your mech keeb journey. I think you should do a collab with Betty from Switch and Click, it’s a great little keyboard community.

loved these things with the blues. but returned it after I got the ZSA Moonlander with the box whites. sounds like you're using the browns which are okay, but the box whites will make you forget about everything else.

dude i felt exactly the same way as you when i was hunting for a new keyboard the other month. I had a stupid razer blackwidow keyboard and a Drop ctrl (this thing is a nightmare stock, it's like metal on metal feel) then the razer keyboard (poor QC, my control cap kept popping out).
Went to a computer mall and tested out the Keychron K8, copped that instantly and never looked back, now im caught in that mod bug lol

Got myself a Q3 and damn this is so much better than every other mechanical keyboard I've ever used. Did a few modifications to it and now I might never buy another keyboard ever again with just how good it feels and sounds.
I recently received a Keychron K2 Aluminum with tactile switches. A thing of beauty.
I bought the Keychron K8 Pro, and I love it! I could type all day on this thing.
I wouldn't say the keychron board has no compromises. For the price it's great, but it still has a lot of case ping when you use it stock. I would recommend doing the force break mod, it should fix most of the metal ping noise

What sells me is definitely the price, I've wanted a high quality keyboard for awhile, but like I really don't want to spend $300 or more and find out that it's not all I expected. But less than $200 is definitely something I'd consider.

a lot over 300 or 400 bucks out there has bad acoustic which makes you drop into hell , and yes i agreed with you , even though it's a not that good board but as long as i didn't spend that much i'm okay with it ( looking at K8 pro )

I have a keychron and after a year the keycaps need to be replaced as the lettering is rubbing off on all of them, the soft feel is nice but not If its gonna rub off after a year. its actually disappointing. My old das after 10 years of use the lettering was still crisp and clear.

Hm. Maybe I'm strange but I decided my first real mech keyboard was gonna be custom from the ground up so I've been sourcing GMK caps, switches based on reviews, a Rama case and PCB, etc... spent way more than I had to, but I got what everyone in the community agreed was "good/top end" so I would enjoy the experience every step of the way. Couldn't imagine spending all the money and time and being just frustrating sad with end result

Do they have a full version of this keyboard? I an looking for a mechanical keyboard which is quiet like this and no other frills and preferably wireless for office use. So a keyboard that doesn’t scream gamer or draws any attention to it.
I don't know about this brand but Ducky offers the Shine 7 with various switches. Very high quality, nice feel. Same price point at $169. It has rgb but the aesthetic is not altogether gamerish. Rgb can be turned off, too.

You now have the iFi ZenDac keyboard equivalent. Entry level gateway drug. Some will call it endgame, while others will claim they can’t stand to type on it, listen to it, or look at it. Will spending more bring you more pleasure? Maybe. As in audio, diminishing returns. My daily driver is a Rama U80-A Seq 2. I love it. Is it 4x better than your board? Naw…

I'm an author and slam my fingers across a Keychron keyboard several hours a day on my work computer. Hasn't let me down for the last couple of years. Funny enough, despite my falling down the audio rabbit hole and spending thousands (before settling on a few and selling the rest), I almost never buy a new keyboard until the old one wears out.

Which switches?
I have had 2 nice mechanical keyboards. I used the first one a LOT, and the second one not as much, because my desktop died, and then I got a Lenovo laptop with keys that are better than almost all laptop keyboards, but not quite Lenovo ThinkPad level.
I found that my typing style is just not at all suited to mechanical keyboards. I bottom the fuck out hard on every key press, so mid-clicks/resistance points are of no use. My second mechanical keyboard has no mid-point but I don't need that much travel if I'm just going to smash each key into the ground.
The other thing is that I only type with one finger on each hand (middle fingers). I am still a pretty fast typer though. But this means that my hands need to move around a lot more than other people who use more fingers, and if I'm typing fast, I can't have my fingers pressed down into a fucking drinking well, because then my finger runs into the un-pressed key beside it as my hand moves towards the location of the next key. So I need short travelling keys that allow my fingers to glide around without interference from the other skyscraper-like keys being in the path.
Would be cool (for me) to check out some very short travel mechanical keyboards, because I like the metal plate under the keys, that solid feeling, rather than squish. My Lenovo doesn't feel like squish, but it's also not as solid as my metal mechanical keyboards.
Update a few hours later: Just checked out some low profile mechanical keyboards, and they travel way too much for my style of typing. Sometimes my fingers don't even lift off the keys to get to the next key, my finger just slides across the bumpy surface lol. Chiclet keyboards are definitely the go here.
Oh... the Tesoro Gram was a thing... mechanical chiclet, that would be awesome (doesn't seem to really exist anymore though). I can't seem to find fuck all in that category unfortunately.
Okay seems I am very much not alone in wanting a slim laptop chiclet style keyboard, but with some mechanical clickiness and a hard non-mushy back-plate thing. This is some VERY obvious and basic stuff, I wonder why companies aren't jumping on this. A lot of people don't like full size mechanical keyboards, but they don't like mushy keys, like come on.
Funnily enough, I put those drop keycaps on my keychron.

@@camoturtle18 it’s reduced some yeah, but over-all I find it to be a better headphone than Arya v2 due to the tuning/timbre fixes.
@@DMS3TV gotcha, I have a V2 and I haven’t heard the V3 but I THINK I would rather have a V2 than the V3 based on what I’ve heard so far just because not many headphones can stage like that and have that scale/depth. THATS why I bought an Arya, for those reasons. Because that’s why it’s different from everything else on the market.

I "get" mechanical keyboards, but here are my biggest issues: not enough with low profile switches, not enough that aren't tenkeyless, not enough that are wireless, SO EXPENSIVE WTF, and 0 that are all those together. I would love it if I could get my logitech solar keybaord with low-profile mechanical switches I would love it: Low profile keeps my wrists down, solar keeps it charged without any issues, I hate wires, the logitech function keys are wonderful, and it's totally rigid - all for less than $60. I don't even have an issue with it being membrane right now because I can still type pretty effortlessly and not press all the way into it feeling squishy, but I'd still love low profile browns.

Guess I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this, but wired keyboard/mice just feel like a step backward to me. It's not like bluetooth headphones vs. actual headphones. I don't get the benefits of wired keyboard/mice. Maybe you can enlighten me?
What are the benefits of wireless keyboard? You would still need a cable attached to charge the keyboard. So, instead of plugging a cable to charge you leave it plugged in all the time.
@@samd6405 My keyboard lasts about 4 month on a single charge and it takes just 2-3 hours to fully charge it. And I get a lot of dust on the desk, so I clean it often.
Benefits of wireless keyboard as I see it: Less clutter on the desk. Easy to clean both desk and keyboard. Mobility (for example, when we watch a movie from the couch).

Just a note, this board will always be $30 shipped in North America. Always. 100% of the time. So just take it with a grain of salt. Granted I love the Q3 and have owned several Keychron products, but everyone should be aware of this.

@@DMS3TV The keycaps on your Drop ALT are GMK branded keycaps which are often consider the gold standard when it comes to keycaps. You literally bought the Audeze of keycaps, so you should go ahead and enjoy them. I don't really know what this other guy is trying to say, but you definitely made the right decision with those keycaps.

Oh man, the great thing with the keychron q series is, they're meh out of the box, but you can mod them to sound and feel pretty great. If you're bored and want to improve it significantly (even though you may not think that's possible) Look up some mod videos for keychron q1. I'm sure your audience would like seeing the video of you discovering how to mod the board

Trust me, this keyboard has massive compromises on sound and feel versus an enthusiast level custom keyboard. The Keychrons are good for the price but as you get deeper into the hobby you will see that they are just barely scratching the surface. Good video and I hope you enjoy getting deeper and deeper into this fun hobby.

@@DMS3TV The biggest compromises are the steel plate and all aluminum construction.
Very few modern customs come with a steel plate unless they are specifically designed for use with Alps switches that you salvage from a vintage Apple keyboard or something like that. Steel tends to sound higher pitched and is very stiff resulting in a harsh bottom out feeling. Aluminum plates are the standard among custom keyboards. It is more expensive to fabricate a plate out of alu than steel but it will give (what I consider) a nicer sound profile and less of a harsh feeling. There are many other plate materials that all have unique sound and feel profiles that you can use to tune a keyboard to your liking such as polycarbonate, carbon fiber, POM, and FR4. Most enthusiasts would much prefer the sound and feel of a keyboard that had one of those other plate materials.
My personal preference is for plateless construction. This offers a wonderful amount of flex and very enjoyable muted sound profile.
Most custom mechanical keyboards also offer integrated brass or stainless steel weights that also improve the sound profile if well engineered. Sound travels more slowly through denser materials and therefore results in a deeper pitch so a well placed internal brass weight below the alpha keys can have a big impact on sound.
However, the key thing to realize is that more than any other hobby I have ever been a part of, mechanical keyboards are all about personal preference. There is no such thing as a bad keyboard as long as you like it. However, there certainly is a lot out there to try especially when you get into all the different mounting styles such as top mount, leaf spring, o-ring gasket, and even things like magnetic levitation that certain people are testing. That's part of what makes the hobby so fun though, and my preferences have certainly changed drastically since I first joined the hobby as I have tried more and more of what's out there.
I would absolutely recommend the Q3 to anyone new to the hobby especially for the price, my only point is that there is a lot more out there that offers more specific customization options that I think most people would end up preferring.
@@Hkhawkins first of all they offer a good variety of plate options for the q1 and q2 so without doubt these options will also be for the q3 (alu pc fr4 etc) so that is just a misrepresentation. second you’re just hardcore a person who lives thru reddit, you literallly are the epitome of a reddit hivemind fanboy spouting all of the flavor of the month r/mk trends. there is nothing wrong with an alu case unless you’re a snob; they’re nice solid and feel quality, and it’s dishonest to say q3 will be only steel. review force break and non force break comparisons
I actually disagree. I have a few custom custom keebs such as the Mode65, Ikki68, and a Tofu. There isn't a "huge compromise" with Keychron's Q series with sound and feel. Sure they're not GBs, not as "hard to get," or rare by any means, but I feel Keychron is making boards in a middle ground between beginners and enthusiasts.
If typing feel and sound are personal preference, why talk bad about it? It might sound pingy out of the box, but with a easy force break mode that solves it. More custom boards might not have that problem, but you're also paying a lot more and usually have to wait. I love me a good custom mech, but these boards aren't bad for the price especially considering the full alu body, hotswap, plate offerings, and VIA compatibility.
@@rawrens I'm not sure where I said there was anything bad about the Keychrons? In fact, I specifically said they were very good for the price. All I said was that they do have compromises. A stainless steel plate is without a doubt a compromise for manufacturing cost reasons, especially when there are so many other plate materials and mounting styles that are available in this hobby.
Yeh this is just the beginning of the end. No one that gets into this hobby ever is satisfied with one board. Soon you'll be lubing switches and stabs, trying different switches, thinking about buying another set of keycaps. You should probably replace the stock keycap with the GMK kaiju that you bought.

This one is pretty quiet not “clicky”. I know there’s totally silent mechanical options out there too.

I love my laptop keyboard too, and usually I feel the same way, but this one changed my mind.

@@DMS3TV FWIW, I use an XPS and am a DevOps developer and so do spend a lot of time on my keyboard.
Also as someone who's in the UK the market space for ISO UK layouts is really small in comparison to the US ANSI layout.
I mean maybe I should try to give something a go at some point, especially as the keyboards like the one you've just shown off sound so much better than traditional clacky mechs.
I alternate between my Dell laptop keyboard, Logitech K380 low profile chiclet keyboard, and my KBDFANS KBD67 Lite with heavy tactile switches and sculpted MT3 caps.
A day of typing on the KBD is a pleasure vs a chore (and a pain) on the others.
