That is the best part of the TW. Excellent mileage, light, fun to ride, easy to work on if it ever needs anything. Which most don’t anyway. Reliable….. what more could you ask for? Beats my pickup truck in the mileage department. In short order… a super economical bike and cheap to even purchase. You can’t go wrong here folks.
Never ride it that cold but I live in the desert in South Africa... never really gets below 60f😎 On my regular route I get 70-75 miles to reserve... 55-60 mph on the tar, 25mph on the dirt, coastal level and stock gearing... enjoy your videos!
Nice!! I don't know what that is like here in Utah! Our high this week is supposed to be 35°. I would love to ride my TW on the coast somewhere, that would be awesome. Thanks for tuning in and for the comment, I really appreciate it!
Hey Jason! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment. It was a brutal 100 miles for sure, but looking back it was a good time still cause I saw some new stuff and I love riding the TW! Thanks again!
Suggestions for cold weather riding. Snowmobile gloves - they are insulated and waterproof. I also use an electric vest. Keeping your body core warm will keep extremities from getting too cold as well
Thanks! I am thinking of getting a heated vest and pants. My hands were okay, but like you said, if I keep my core and lowers warm the others should be good.
I got the msr explorer pants (jacket still back ordered) I can’t believe how much I like them! Been riding just below freezing wet from trail and an hour ride home on the street, very comfortable! Even in summer heat with the vents open there great
Now you need to do a full tank off road and compare the difference. I had a early 80s yamaha 400 and road it year round when the snow wasn't to deep. Used to pull over and hold my hands around the exhaust pipe to get the feeling back in my hands. Lol
@jeffnearing719 I know! It drinks a lot more fuel when I doing off road shenanigans with it! I should have done that with the exhaust, but my hands are usually the warmest part of me on those colder rides.
If you decide to recheck the mpg in warm weather just to see if it makes a difference. Try to follow the same route. This time, every time you stop remove the gas cap and check how much is remaining. Or at least that is what I do. Love your level of commitment.
Every time I fill up with non ethanol gas, I always set the odometer to 0. When it gets to 70 then I start looking for a gas station. I thought about a bigger tank but I can also bring extra fuel with me. Also I have noticed the 47 tooth sprocket allows me to cruise at 60 to 65 all day and I'm getting the same mpg as stock, but I'm faster less rpm= less vibration. Great video by the way hope you had a great Christmas and new years.
Thanks Patrick! My father in law loves the 47t sprocket on his and he is getting over 90mpg's every time he fills up. I need about 10 more TW's so I can set them all up differently! One for all types of riding.
Those Lil Yammys are excellent on fuel MPG. I have a 2021 DR200 that claims 88mpg. And I think it will do it, with the skinny little tires on that thing. A++ Video take care, Clark
Yes they are! That is awesome that the DR does that well! I wish the KLX230S with "fuel injection" did that well. But, my TW get better mileage than it does! 😂
The wind is what really zaps the warmth out of you. When it's really cold, like 30°F, I throw on a rain suit. Helps block the wind and retain body heat.
I have noticed that with my rain gear! I have some FroggToggs rain gear and I have used it before while working to keep the wind off, I should've thought of that!
Matt - up here in Canada we know a bit about winter riding :).......first thing, get some Hippo Hands (brand name) these are like huge mitts/air blockers similar to what you might see on a snowmobile, but made specifically for motorcycles. I swear by these. In fact, if you have heated grips with Hippo Hands attached, you can ride with summer gloves even in the cold. Secondly, long underwear, wool socks, neck wrap - and if you want to go the heated route, heated vest, heated gauntlet gloves, etc. I use a heated vest with a rechargeable lithium battery, good for 2 hours (more if you have the vest on the low setting). I went with a non-motorcycle heated vest off Amazon, much cheaper than moto company branded kit. Sometimes I use those disposable hand or feet heater pads one uses for hunting - I have shoved one in the toe of each boot and that has worked - some put them in their gloves too, be careful your skin does not burn for the hands. All the best and thanks for the video ! (Reminder: Hippo Hands!)
Hey Ronny! Thanks for the insight. I just called Hippo Hands, and waiting to hear back from them. I had the long underwear on but it didn't work very well, but I couldn't find my better pair so that doesn't really count. I had a neck wrap on and it did good, but I might check an electric vest of some sort. My wife actually told me to take some of those heat pads you're talking about and I didn't listen! 😂 Lesson learned. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!
@@MOBStreet83 Hi Matt, lots of good ideas there always listen to the wife for a happy life, LOL. I got the big Hippo Hands and swapped them back and forth from my Tenere 700 and the TW - sold the T7, so they belong only to the TW now! All the best in 2024 for you and your family! Ronny
Thanks Vinnie! I had the glove liners and they were great! My lower thermals didn't help, but I couldn't find my better ones, that won't happen again! I appreciate it!
Nice video! My cold weather riding tricks are: • Wear thermal base layers • Wool socks • HWK wind proof motorcycle pants (highly recommend them) • Wear your favorite motorcycle jacket and zip in the rain/wind liner • Wear a balaclava with helmet (you'll get better results with a helmet that has a flip down face shield) • Wear some snow/ski gloves with HotHands packets inside • and some warm coffee ☕ >>> If you want to get fancy, you can do what i do and remove the helmet liner and ductape all the vents closed from the inside of the helmet (blocks all the cold wind) then reinstall the liners
Dude, I love the duck tape idea!! I had thermals, but they weren't thick enough.....I couldn't find my better pair (but have found them since) I should've worn my full face but didn't think it would be too bad (shows what I get for thinking) I will check out those pants though, that would be a game changer for sure! Thanks for all the insights!!
The biggest thing to help keep yo warm is to block the wind. PU rain-gear is cheap and works great. For your hands, though, I highly recommend Hippo Hands! They look goofy AF, but really do help keep wind from stealing the heat from your hands. I use them for years now, and they make winter commuting to work bearable. They also keep them dry, and we all know how miserable wet gloves can be, especially in the winter!
Someone else mentioned rain gear as well and I totally forgot that I have a set I could use! The Hippo Hands might have to be my next purchase. Thanks for the insight!
With a small bike like this, your best mileage will be obtained at the lowest speed in the highest gear where you're not lugging the engine and where wind resistance isn't too high due to speed. For instance, my CRF230L likes being in 4th gear at around 30 mph where it's idling and there's no wind resistance and will get great mileage... this is a good forest road speed. On the highway it tops out around 70 mph and it isn't getting good mileage, but drop it down to 50 or so in 6th and it will go a lot further on a tank of gas. My 2017 BMW R1200 GSA gets around 60 mpg at 55 mph, and around 48 mpg at 70 mph. It gets in the high 60 mpg range at 45 mph in 6th but that only works on flat roads... starts to lug with any load on the engine. Wind resistance goes up by a factor of 8(!) when you double your speed... 8 times higher at 60 mph than at 30 mph. Really, you've learned that 100 miles is about all you can expect without going on the reserve... so if you might have to drive 150 miles between gas stops better tuck a 1.5L fuel bottle in your pack or tailbag.
Hey John! Thanks for the insight and you are right, I do plan around 100 miles for fuel. But, now that I have this Bradley Performance Exhaust on it.....it is getting a little worse since I seem to be hot rodding it a lot now.....😂 Normally, I do pack extra fuel with me if I know I won't be around a gas station or will be longer than 100 miles. I really appreciate the breakdown and it makes sense to me. Thanks again!
Clark or Acerbis should make a tank for these... Does anyone make a larger tank ? Wool base layers top and bottom. When super cold put news papers under your shirt to keep wind off your core. Polypropylene glove liners help alot. Thin Balaclava can be worn under helmet.
I think IMS or Clark have one for the TW. I have seen some on the TW's. The glove liners I have and they help a lot. I had a balaclava around my neck but not over my head. Good tips. Thanks for the comment John!
I have averaged 60mpg on my tdub in the dirt 2 track here in Arizona/Nevada desert (sand etc)it’s not flat ground here and the transmission gets used a lot. I have the Clarke 2.8gallon tank so I try and limit my ride to 150 miles as playing it safe is better and that’s a long way in one day anyways. It might go near 200miles but the anxiety is not fun.
Buddy you need some gerbing heated Gear! I have the jacket liner and heated gloves! It's the best way to go! We sold our TW200 a few years ago! My wife now rides an XT250! The EFI is awesome! I like the better tire option for the XT250! TW200 is a great bike!
Hey Keith! I will look into it for sure! I love the XT250 and want to add one to the stables. You're right, there are many more tire choices. Those beaches you are riding in your videos look awesome! By the looks of it, Yamaha is your machine of choice with your wheelers and the FZ-09! Thanks for watching and for the suggestion on heated gear!
I just went 93 miles on 1.06 gallons of 91 octane. 2013 TW200 bone stock except for a 15T sprocket. Route was up the Devils Highway from Morenci, Arizona to Alpine, Arizona. Twistiest road in America. Elevation of 9,370 feet near the end. Snow on ground. Was in 3rd and 4th gear a lot. I did take pictures of my odometer and the gas pump refill in Alpine. Went 57 miles from Alpine, Az to Alma, New Mexico on just 6/10ths gallon of gas. I know, I am having a hard time believing it myself.
The number one thing to remember when riding n da cold is stopping the WIND. Using a wind proof/ rain mid layer is worth 10 layers. U want wool / silk next to your skin for moisture wicking, no cotton. Fleece jacket then riding coat over that. If u want to be really comfortable get a heated mid layer jacket / vest. Milwaukee tools has excellent battery jacket. Uses M12 batteries u use with the tools u already have. Next is your head. 99% of your body heat escapes out of the top of your head. Use balaclava, they fit under your helmet, no fit issues. If u keep your torso and head warm your golden. The rest of your body, same thing. Keep the wind out and no sweating and you be nice and warm.
I totally forgot that Tusk has the heated seat option! I have a set of Hippo Hands coming that will be awesome. I haven't had much luck with the Tusk grip heaters just yet, they keep killing the battery.
ALWAYS use non-ethanol fuel in these little beasts. I would like to get the guy that started that nonsense and kick him until I was tired. I have modded my little TW quite a bit. I love riding it. I also have a 2022 Polaris Trail, and I love it too. Best quad I have ever owned. I sold my top-heavy, high-geared XT 600, because I was on a 2 track alone (like always), and it just tipped over. Took me 25 minutes to figure out a way to lift that heavy thing back up. Took it to my favorite bike shop and had him sell it. I then drove to Denver from Idaho to pick up the only TW200 that I could find. It is also a 2022. At least I can pick this machine up if it tips over. It will go anywhere I need to go, and probably some places that I do NOT need to go. LOL
Nice! Yeah, some folks say that this bike is heavy, but coming from the Harley world, this bike is way light. I have never really used ethanol free fuel because they bikes have never sat long enough for it to really cause any issues, not to mention the closest station to me that has ethanol free is almost 20 miles from my house.
@@MOBStreet83 My ethanol station is 8 miles from home, BUT, I have a 25 gallon "FUEL Caddy in my shop that has gas for all of my carbureted engines. My lawn mower, weed eater, chainsaw, TW200, and small 2,000 watt generator. They all sit for about 6 months with no use. I live in Pocatello Idaho. It is cold right now. Really cold! It is heavier than my Yamaha 175s that I use to ride, but it is still lighter than that 600. I rode a 600 for many years, but I am not as strong as I once was.
@@MOBStreet83 I think that I told you about all of the mods that I have done to my TW, but I have added a new one. I have a rear disc brake now. The only thing not included in the kit are 2 banjo bolts with built in bleeders. Until I replaced the banjo bolts with the bleeder bolts I could not get the brakes bled. I also replaced the supplied pads with sintered brass pads. My rear brakes now work sooooo much better.
Yep, if you're in Idaho you know exactly what I mean! I have that rear disc kit and I am going to install it. I will find those banjos so I can bleed them out. Where did you find the new brake pads?
@@MOBStreet83 I am sorry, I can't remember. It mentioned what pads are the same in a YT post. I got them from someplace in Utah, I can't remember that either. I am sorry, my memory is not getting any better. I gave my unused but new pads to a Yamaha shop that has been good to me. It was not the guy that sells the kit, but one of the people that commented on the kit-guys channel. Not much help from me today.
Yep, did it for science! I wanted to stop but realized, I would have to ride back no matter what. So on we went. 😂 Not my most well thought out plan, but it worked!
When I know that I am going to need it, yes I do. Most of the time I am out riding I won't go farther than I know I can go. When I do longer rides, I will either plan a route with stations within range or I will take extra fuel with me.
before I installed the Bradley Exhaust, I was getting close to 65 or 70 depending on what type of riding I was doing. Riding Moab, or doing hill climbs, it is a lot lower.
Some roads we do, just not all. I make it work though and it doesn't bother me at all to keep me from exploring. Plus, it just takes some proper planning on my part which I didn't do this time around.
@@MOBStreet83 gotta add thise extra numbers. What if you were one Mile from home and you were at 70 miles on reserve???? Lol you would be walking 🤣🤣🤣🤣 well you know what I mean lol

It was not the guy that sells the kit, but one of the people that commented on the kit-guys channel. Not much help from me today.
Way to brave the cold, for science!... :D
You get so much out of that bike, its great.
Yep, did it for science! I wanted to stop but realized, I would have to ride back no matter what. So on we went. 😂 Not my most well thought out plan, but it worked!
Didn't you get 130 miles a few years ago?
Do you carry extra fuel?
When I know that I am going to need it, yes I do. Most of the time I am out riding I won't go farther than I know I can go. When I do longer rides, I will either plan a route with stations within range or I will take extra fuel with me.
Recommendation for carrying extra fuel, amount, container etc, great channel.
What fuel mileage are you getting in the trails?
before I installed the Bradley Exhaust, I was getting close to 65 or 70 depending on what type of riding I was doing. Riding Moab, or doing hill climbs, it is a lot lower.
To bad in America they don’t give you a shoulder, just rumble strips and no universal healthcare
Some roads we do, just not all. I make it work though and it doesn't bother me at all to keep me from exploring. Plus, it just takes some proper planning on my part which I didn't do this time around.
Matt's the best but I'm a fair weather rider. No way I'm riding under 45 degrees in Pa
I wouldn't say he's the best.....kinda a big idiot if you know him....he didn't plan out this ride all that well.
In Canada, we are paying $6.20 A gallon so sad
Um, that is flat out robbery!!
My daughter gets 80 mpg. I’ve calculated it on several trips. She drives like a lil’ ol’ lady.
Nice!! 😂😂
A snowmobile suite works for me boots are up to you
The Jacket is part of a snow suit, but, everything else I had was no good
Winter blend fuel is different from Spring/summer blend fuel. Yes, there is a difference and Yes you'll get worse fuel mileage to all the viewers.
That is something to remember also! Thanks for bringing that up. Does the ethanol free have a winter blend as well?
@@MOBStreet83 I'm not 100% sure when it comes to Ethanol free fuel but with a carburetor you should only run E-Free!
hippo hands
Good Thinking!! Oddly enough, my hands are the warmest part of me while I ride!
99.1/1.414 is 70.08 lol however I prefer the vehicles that get 9mpg Ha Ha Ha
I did 99.1/1.4 and it came as 70.8.....so yeah if I do the full number you are right. I like those kind of vehicles too, just don't one yet.
@@MOBStreet83 gotta add thise extra numbers. What if you were one Mile from home and you were at 70 miles on reserve???? Lol you would be walking 🤣🤣🤣🤣 well you know what I mean lol
A coat
Yep, a coat.
