- The Sound Couple head off to an outdoor venue which we have never been to before....We are supporting the band for a music in the park gig, which are always a nice in that they are usually a shorter and more relaxed.....but as usual, rain is always seems to be lurking around the corner!
Besides the continue saga of a in-ear mix that continues to be a challenge for one of the band members, the FOH mix we achieve with the gear we have proves to us once again how much of a pleasure it is to work on our system.

It’s always very interesting and instructive to see how The Sound Couple approaches a venue where they have not previously had the opportunity of providing production services. This video is no exception.
From making arrangements to drive closer to the actual venue, to setting up equipment when the possibility looms that there might be rain, to determining how power will be provided, as is consistently the case, Bart and Stacy teach us a variety of helpful tips and techniques.
Thanks to The Sound Couple for once again taking us along for the gig at this truly delightful venue. We appreciate the opportunity to learn from you both how to improve our own production capabilities.

Your system has a great sounding range. From what i can hear thru the video you're not loosing much low end or highs when walking up on the grass.

We are truly happy with them...but in full transparency...I have mixed on numerous systems over the years but not on a lot of newer offerings and these are the first "modern" speakers we have owned. We are lucky today because there are a lot of good choices out there for "modern" speakers, but these really work for us and see no reason to change.

I’ve come to really enjoy using a Beta 91A inside the kick. As you say bad cables can give you grief but they seem to require less EQ to get what you need. Thanks for another great video. 🤘🖖👍
Yes...they are really convent and less in the way on small stages....so far, we have had no issues!

Modern sound systems are superior to the old point source systems of the past. I had one guy in a band tell me on an outdoor gig "that ain't enough PA for this gig!". In the end, we actually had to TURN DOWN the volume! I use LD Systems Maui44 and Turbosound IP3000 towers. Haven't used point source speakers for mains in over 15 years! And yes, I have the 901 boundry mic as well. Don't often use it but it works great if you don't have XLR issues!

The iP3000 column arrays are great for smaller venues. I use my PreSonus CDL10P speakers for larger gigs.
I agree but want to add that even in the area of point sources the modern digitally powered systems have developed a lot in comparison to 20 years ago.
Had the same experience with a brass band I took over doing sound and they asked me at the first gig „hey man the speakers we had for years now were waaay more heavy and way more in terms of number of speakers than yours….will this be enough?“….at the end I had the same issue, had to turn the volume down 😂
another great video. There are two pet peeves that I have as a sound person. 1 happened here. When a band member puts a mic up to an instrument or amp (in this case the little melodica the horn guy was playing.) To me, the band member is assuming it is not being heard out front. It is indirectly questioning the job youre doing. Im sure no harm was meant but its just one of those things. The other is when a lead singer asks after a song or two, "can you hear us out there? everything sound ok" its another way of questioning your skills. I dont know, maybe im reading into it too much. Love your videos. I know how hard they are to make while you are working the gig.
Adding one more...barking out monitor requests through the PA during the performance...hand signals are much better. Guessing in this case either one of two things...for effect, or to hear it better for herself.
Keep up the good work! love to see youre videos also hate when ppl request monitor trought PA or when go and use a vocal equalized mic on and instrument like ur not doin ur job but well clients and "musicians" being "musicians" hahaha
There are definitely better approaches and with many musicians, we are able to connect and give them what they need with most people not even knowing....That is the way we prefer to work.
Not quite sure how you have your in-ear mixes running. I like running them off the board because then I can solo the aux send to hear what's going on and assist if need be. Or just double check.
I've been running around with Bluetooth adapters then I can use and he had said I want. the ones with a APTX-LL have been working pretty well for me. I'm sure the professional stuff works way better but it's also more expensive. That's sort of solved my wireless PFL use cases. Although I have found a better multi receiver set. It's not very often that I want to listen to something but when I want to listen to something and zero in it's usually when I forget to grab the headset from the stage.
Wonder if their pack volume is getting bumped. I would try getting another receiver on the same frequency if their system supports that and monitor it. Another thing that might be worth trying is taking either that hardline or even going to the Wireless and coming back into a spare channel just for recording purposes to check later.

Love your videos! Can 2 DCL 12p's cover a group of 100 to 150 without a sub. I just perform in small to medium sized churches. Small band, southern gospel. Thanks!

hahah iPads. I was just thinking about that the other day in a way. The oldest member of the bluegrass band I work with just switch to in-ears and has been using my iPad to control and doesn't have a wedge on the floor but otherwise has the songs mostly memorized with the rest of the band. But out front it almost looks like he's using digital lyrics when in reality all they have is a set list of two or three pages and it's on the floor.

Should label up your drum snake with Carmen labels, kicks, snare, Tom, overhead, etc. That way both ends match up and can be quickly plugged in. At least for the common ones, I've had a lot of non-common ones this year and my stage box is right next to the drum kit usually and I have ended up patching and re-labeling just about every show.
We decided to be more generic as we work with different bands and use our cables for different instruments depending on the situation.
Thanks again S&B for sharing - wonderful location, great weather and happy crowd. Bonus = parking spot. One thing that dawned on me (in this digital age) is the use of scenes for shows. As you have a handful of bands you mix for regularly, do you have preset scenes for each band which are used in repeated shows, even if there are small adjustments required because of local acoustics, etc? And if so, do you have one scene for "indoor" gigs and a second one for "outside" gigs to help with the setup of each show?
Really good question! PreSonus splits them into two pieces: Projects and Scenes. I configure it so each band is a Project and each gig is a Scene (location/date). Things change enough, including my ears, that it's nice to capture the snapshots in time in case I want to go back and review or see what I did. I will save the scene one final time after the show before recalling another one. Not a bad idea with the indoor/outdoor idea, but I just personally have not found that need.
Hi friends, please consider wearing belly lift belts when loading. All it takes is one lift, then it hurts!
Stacy will wear a support belt at for load in/out...when she thinks of it! I used to wear one but we are both careful on how we lift.
I'm jealous that you get to mix bands like this. I mean, Tower of Power, awesome! All I seem to get lately is 2 rock guitars, bass & drums with half stacks pointed right at the FOH position. I keep hoping for a keyboard or even a sax player. Hard to get in my area. I'm using the Presonus 64S and NSB Stage Boxes and love using the Presonus gear. I get all the features I need without breaking the bank. It also seems that Presonus is becoming more rider friendly even with some national acts. I mixed Quiet Riot last month and they were thrilled with my system. Always Love watching the videos, keep em' coming.
PreSonus has great gear but their reputation has been challenged because of bugs and manufacturing QC issues. Hopefully, they have taken away some valuable lessons! We have been lucky in connecting with some great groups! With that, we learned some lessons along the way and decline some gigs as well.
@@thesoundcouple I agree with the QC issues. I'm on my 2nd 64S because the first one had a networking issue. To their credit they finally determined it was a hardware failure in the mixer itself and did replace it. No such issues with the new one. I was wondering if you have a list of upcoming shows somewhere. I don't think you're that far away from me and it would be fun to hook up and talk shop sometime. Keep up the good work!

Awesome video guys! Recently my friend bought a Presonus 32SC for bigger shows this summer and it’s great and I tried on mixing a band with it and it’s great and I’m going to pick up myself a 32sc soon and the routing for stage box is confusing for me a little bit so are you going to make a video on stage box routing soon!
The consoles are nice. For a lot of the setup and configuration, we prefer working with the software as it's more familiar and quicker for us than the console. We probably won't get a chance to do a specific video on routing (we have done some demonstrations within our videos) primarily because it's already covered pretty well in existing videos. The other important thing is to get hands on experience and experiment. There is a learning curve, but it does make sense once you get the hang of it. Troubleshooting routing issues brings you up another level. I feel that PreSonus has done a good job making sense of it, compared to some others I have worked with.

Also, your thoughts on placing the mains? Does it make a difference if the mains were placed in front of the pavilion columns rather than to the insides?
Don't think it would have made a big difference. There was plenty of room for the band across the front and we could still keep the speakers protected if a shower was to pop up.
The issue with volume changes in the IEMs might be due to the volume knob on the pack getting moved.
If I'm wearing a jacket or shirt that brushes against the volume knob, it can turn it up or down when I dance to the beat. It's very easy for fabric to move the knob. The first time it happened, I thought someone was messing with me, but it was just my shirt! It's really bad if I am wearing a jacket when I perform.
I was watching another sound channel and they mentioned the same thing. They had some rubber covers for Shure IEM packs that protects it from sweat and he said helps stiffen up the volume control.
Yes...we thought of this too. On our P3RA's, we placed a little rubber washer between the knob and the pack....now the knob has more resistance. We will share this with the band.

You prefer the E901 vs the Beta 91a? Just curious. We typically use the Beta inside along with an Audix D6 outside. That would be for heavier rock.
Have never tried the Beta 91a - but I have heard that it's very similar to the Sennheiser. Actually...one band we do work with uses the Beta 91 - it's works out, but would honestly need to hear it on more kits to really understand its' characteristics.

@@d-rock737 Thank you...it's always nice to either work with familiar mics or familiar drums. When you are working with neither, it's really hard to assess exactly how things are being produced. If possible, I will sometimes sit down behind an unfamiliar kit to hear it acoustically to help baseline it.

Bart, Stacy... first off...love your videos. Watched nearly all of them. I've had lots of similar experiences on the road. I've been doing sound for a Beatles Tribute band here in Wisconsin for 24 years now and just recently purchased 4 CDL12P's and 4 CDLSub18's for the band. Quick question: The CDLsub18 manual says " Do not attempt to pole mount loudspeakers atop ground-stacked CDL Sub18s." Yet I've seen you stack 2 CDL12's on top of double stacked subs many, many times. I know you have CDL12's, not the P version. I thought you had CDLsub18's? So, have you had any issues with stacking 2 CDL12's on top of 2 CDLsub18s?
We have not had any issues with double stacking...I may be incorrect, but feels like this statement was added by the lawyers. We do double stack over the CDL 18s which do lock together so the whole thing is coming down if someone runs into it. At the end of the day....you just need to make sure you have insurance, unfortunately.
@@thesoundcouple thanks for the quick reply. My subs do not have locks (they must be different models). Looks like I'll get me some straps, for more security. Great products tho, I tested out a single top with a single sub (x 2) and could only get my mains fader to -20 (usually at -5) for my normal volume (85-90dbs at 40 ft). Might be time to reset my gain structure.
@@michaelst7680 There are two different versions of subs in the CDL series. We have a pair of the latest Sub18 (they do not lock) and four of the older discontinued CDL 18s (they do lock). From a stability standpoint, I would not hesitate to stack on the Sub18 - they have a larger footprint than the 18s, but you need to do what you are comfortable with. If adding the straps makes it feel more comfortable, that's ok. Ground-stacking any cabinets is going to come with risks and we cannot prevent Bozo from being stupid and knocking cabinets over. In all of our years, we have been fortunate that this has never happened or come close to happening!

@@thesoundcouple yeah. They seem to be a moving target. But at least gives me a ballpark on where to look with amperages and size.
Who provides AC power for the band and backline on these gigs? Do you give them quad boxes/extension cords or do they bring their own?
We typically provide the AC power and the quad boxes. That way they’re not inadvertently plugging into our mains or other power and have the dedicated “stage power” run!
how come you have a lot of output? did you use tow digital mixer? how many output a presonus 24R?
On the bands 24r, they are using in-ear monitors so each member needs and output. The 24r has 12 physical outputs if I am recalling that correctly. Our 32r has 16 outputs.
Hey guys, big fan I love all the videos. I have a question. I just picked up a pair of CDL 12s. They sound great and they’re fairly loud. I like them a lot. I’m doing a show for 500 people in the fall. Do you think two CDL 12s can get the job done if I push it or would you recommend getting two more?
The type of event and environment always play a role in this decision. Is it a concert paid for by 500 attentive attendees or is it an event that you will be part of that will have 500 attendees? The type of music is always important as well...is it Bluegrass band or Heavy Metal? Through out all of our videos, you see we can be in a small room pushing it, to a hotel ballroom and we are trying to keep a lid on the volume. I am saying this because we can't in good conscience tell you to go out and spend money. It is pretty surprising how easily people spill unvetted opinions on what people need. If you know your system and the event, you should be able to determine what you need. If you're unsure and want to do the gig...then it's always nice to be able to bring in more. We have gotten burned both ways...not bringing enough, or brining in too much....part of the risks of what we do. Normally, we do get it right! Good luck!
Do you already used a Audix D6 microphone for kick ? It is a very interesting microphone for low frequencies
One of the bands we work with provides one. I am not blown away with it like some folks are, but it gets the job done for sure.

We use a Sennheiser e604, but he has been providing his own lately which we can’t remember the model. The e604 works well though.

I think the horn section brought their own mics for this gig. Currently, we are providing the SGX Pro's for many of our gigs and whey are working out well for us!

Out of curiosity are the musicians using XVives U4 IEMs? We’ve had musicians experience similar issues when using xvives. We’ve seen very dodgy performance from them when multiple units are used at the same time. There are only so many channels… Also as others mentioned the volume knob location is problematic on those.
Check out Scott Uhls channel...he has a lot of good videos on wireless and what to look out for. It's not that the cheaper ones can't do the job...it's when you start bringing in more budget RF is when things get interesting. For the SC, our paddle antenna (PSM300's) and using WWB has pretty much removed the issues with our RF. We just got spoiled with our ULX system's resiliency that we were caught off guard with our more budget PSM300's. They work well when they are completely free of interference. So, in the end it's a bit more work, but work that arguably should be done if you want to be completely responsible (Frequency coordination).
@@thesoundcouple @thesoundcouple Hey Bart, we have 5 Shure SLX Wireless Mics with the Antenna Combiner and the paddle antennas. That system is pretty resilient. Like you said it's the lower budget ones that are on the 2.4 ghz range that get dodgy. We have had musicians say the same thing with volume gains and dips, but only with multiple xvives going at the same time.

@@thepeacedrummer Can't remember if we purchased a GoPro 11 or 12, but we ended up returning it. The camera would overheat after recording approximately 10 minutes of footage. Not acceptable in our opinion and looks like there are a lot of people complaining about this with the newer models....it's shocking they can sell them like this.

Do you find the bottom cab is to much pointed to the ground ?
Perhaps in some cases....the angles are fixed so there are no options, but we have found that they work well from small to larger areas...so it's a bit of compromise, but keeps things simple.
Stacy! Sometimes the shorter gigs even though they are the same amount of work feel like more work just because you don’t have the long down time!
Also have y’all considered a ramp for rolling the speaker cabs out the van? It may make it just a tad easier or safer for your backs at least!
We have considered it, but we only have the subs on wheels, so the ramp would really not be that beneficial for us.
Is the singer with issues sure that their in ears are fitted correctly?? Could be just slipping around in their ears while singing, which can sound like volume changing when it's really just the fit.
All issues are resolved when they use a wired pack....that's what we are told!
Hello, I was wondering how you do WIFI?
If you have seen any of our earlier videos, we used to have more frequent wifi issues...we started using software WiFi Explorer Lite to start managing more proactively. Once we have found a good channel, it's been very solid for us.

We obviously embrace technology that enables us to do our job better....my point with the iPads and singers is that we have also seen these tools being used as a "crutch" and a distraction to the music. With vocals being primary connection with the audience, it's the vocalists who are primarily tasked to make that happen...goes with territory. Now there are of course exceptions to all of this, but all singers should always strive to and take pride in memorizing lyrics and we stick by that fundamental rule of being a singer.

You have made several comments on this...so apparently this comment has struck a chord with you. I think you missed the point...it's about pushing yourself to continue to raise the bar and not use technology as a crutch....we have been doing this a long time, and I see more singers using these tools as a crutch....not all of them and not all of the time.
Why is that? Singers don’t memorize their words any longer?’ Back in the day, that was a big deal, no cheat sheets.
That's a good question....we see it more and more. I think that part of it is that a lot of musicians are playing a lot of different gigs with multiple bands and rehearsals are mostly a thing of the past. In addition, gone are the days of listening to the songs and writing down the lyrics on sheets of paper (and hoping you are getting most of the words right!). Now it's a two second copy/paste and there's the lyrics on the iPad...so the motivation to memorize lyrics has just become less of a priority. I recall a singer who joined the band and on her first gig, she had every song memorized...I told her how impressed I was that she did that and her response was...I am going to be the singer in this band and that's my job....I will never forget that and still much respect to her this day.
