The Sound Couple's Light Adventure

- The Sound Couple is off to another wedding that's held at a venue that we have not had the pleasure of hearing it's take on acoustics!
You will notice that with all of the extra time we had and the fact that Stacy isn't there for most of it, this left Bart to do a lot of talking and provided a great opportunity to mess some things up...We got ourselves into a last minute lighting "situation".
Before that all goes down, we take the opportunity to provide an overview of Luminair: luminair.app
We hope you enjoy this tale of the lights and more importantly, see how we manage through some typical challenges of the big wedding day.
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16
Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.
I'm a musician/sound guy at heart and started with lights a bit more seriously a couple of months back. There are so many ways things can go wrong if you're not on top of things at all times. Have pulled my hair a fair share of times because of all kinds of weird issues :D
Yes, there is always going to be something and what is important is how you are able to resolve issues to the degree that nobody ever knows!

Love Luminair as well. Always learning - lots of features
Cool! Good to know there are others using it. It takes some getting used to!
I still need to buy a power distro!
Remember there are options for these...you can make one or have one made. When supplied, it is more common for us to run into one that was built (hopefully by a qualified person) from mounting an electrical panel and outlets onto a piece of plywood and wiring it all up. Otherwise, there are options like we have that will likely be more expensive.
Oh boy, My Favorite! Glass walls, gloss concrete, small room, drums (you were missing 8 wedges and a deaf guitar player for the perfect A1 experience).... Keeping the volume down is a true handful. Oddly, sometimes its better to add (2) more subs to offset the sharpness. It will push your SPL up a bit. Its easy to create pain 1k and up realm. Below 80hz it takes a ton of power to cause the same level of pain.
I can understand where you are going with that. We do feel that the CDL cabinets offset some of these potential issues...they are a very smooth sounding cabinet which is a good attribute in environments like this.
Wowww Good job
Thank you!
Just got a Rcf Evox 12 system to go long with my EV system. to tell you the Evox 12s are so impressive. I barely use my big system anymore specially, for event up to 350 people merry Christmas you guys
We have heard about and experienced some of the RCF systems....good stuff!
I must say i'm not a huge fan of RCF stuff. We used to have 3 RCF wedge monitors on tour for a couple of years. Their power supplies often died and we had to replace the drivers at least 5 times or so. Luckily we're all on inear monitoring now
@@TinoSchulz1990 Have had a few power supplies fail in the boxes, early 6 series outdoor use driving the doggie doo out of them) Turns out they dont like to get wet
Great gig. Just wondering, How is the bass player plugged into the system? Was it micd from his bass amplifier? I learn so much from your channel
This band runs all direct...no amps on stage. Thanks for watching!

House right speaker throwing a lot of reflective sound into that wall!
Just more things that add to the fun of mixing rooms like this!
Did you consider using just one side?
No...the need to set cabinets next to a wall is pretty common. Doesn't bother us.@@JR-us3cq
When running P2 on subs does that like add more volume to the meter and makes it close to clipping on the subs or just adds like some more juice to the low end and happy holidays and happy new year guys ❤
I believe it's just a boost and not a frequency boost.
I'm giving very serious consideration to getting Luminair, as I have been putting together a wireless lighting system for use at my sound gigs (if I can avoid running DMX cables in addition to audio cables, setup/striking is a bit easier). It looks like I would just need to get an interface (Enttec perhaps?) to connect to my MacBook and a wireless transmitter to plug into the interface (like the Donner that you use, for example) to make the lights shine. Yes? Simple setup, very small footprint.
Check out this video where we cover some of this: ua-cam.com/video/TO0NaHthk0w/v-deo.html
Thank you 😊 I actually watched that episode a couple of hours before this one. But, I'm not quite sure about the wifi router. I'm not using a network for my lighting, so could I not just go straight into the interface from my MacBook?
I think if you ran an ethernet cable from your Mac to the Enttec, it would work. You can assign an IP address to the Enttec with their comanion application, but out of the box, it doesn't require that as it comes assigned with a factory default IP address. We did change the IP address of ours just to match our network. Bottom line, it may take some tweaking, but I cannot think of a reason why you couldn't make it work. @@Hyakman5408
@thesoundcouple Thank you for the info! The Enttec that I'm considering (DMX USB Pro 512 channel) uses a USB connection, which is good as neither of my MacBooks has an ethernet port. The Chauvet DJ DFi XLR TX Wireless DMX Transmitter is what I would likely connect directly to the interface, in lieu of a DMX cable running here, there, and everywhere 😀 Each fixture currently has a Chauvet USB wireless DMX Transceiver plugged in.
Ahhh, you are doing your homework. That sounds like a good plan..just know there are USB-C to RJ-45 adapters, but the USB route is good.@@Hyakman5408
Luminair is great but I’m staying on V3. Doesn’t allow some of the deeper edits and a few other things but for me it’s great. Only running 1 tablet tho, 1 universe. I have a few band setup videos on my UA-cam if you want to see
It is nice that they allow version 3 to run...if it works for what you need to do, it's still a good option. Feel free to post any links you have!
I’ve got some short videos, most lately are to document how I setup something for myself or another tech how that event is setup
What is that new cart you guys are using? I need it 😊😅😂
We haven't acquired any new carts lately, but you may be referring to the Total Trolleys, which are no longer branded, but it looks like the design has been acquired by at least one other company: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1743365-REG/kerry_kart_kkblk_4_in_1_cart_black.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&smpm=ba_f2_lar&lsft=BI%3A6879&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAs6-sBhBmEiwA1Nl8sytF9GdXFDHcXin6QYtOtV0c3uyK0gxEdRuZA69ZBz3b0SV4oRSMuhoCn8oQAvD_BwE. I would see if you could find a used one or someone that has similar as this seems really expensive....but their functionality may be worth it...we love ours!
you guys should get a ADJ Wolfmix for your lighting control
Yes...we have looked at those!

Can that app do custom fixtures? Always looking at new options
Hey Bart! On those iPad's you can use split screen. Its not supported with 100% compatible with every app however it is worth a shot. I'm sure you press those 3 dots at the very top of the screen and it gives you options. I'm not 100% sure how to do it but I know that its an option. There will be instructions on google lol
I believe Luminair supports, but no UC Surface...hopefully the next version will!
@@thesoundcouple I didn't think UC would, but yeah hopefully in the future it does, it could make solo gigs a little easier
UC Surface is due for a refresh!@@Jackh2407
@@thesoundcouple Great!
What about laser projectors that can project patterns onto the ceiling and walls but making sure that no one gets blinded by the units.
Not sure we would ever go that direction with our light show.
need to invest on sum moving heads!
We have them but they are not used for every show.
I keep my DMX wireless dongles plugged in with the lights, through a mini power distro at the top of the tree.
That's not a bad idea...I guess we would like to stick to the concept of why we have the battery so we don't need to run power.
ANYTHING that saves time! Time is the enemy. Build a custom cart to carry lights gear, have cables tied to racks this all takes time to locate and connect. Cost more but saves you on every show. Its also about the how gear is transported what works in a semi does not work in a van.
I know this is specific, but have you ever had a guest come up to you and tell you to get off your iPads and enjoy the event?
Not exactly that, but people wondering what we are doing!
You will run out of time if you have too much equipment. I would upgrade the new version so you don't have to spend too much to get things ready. I only take the most is 3 hrs to set up for an event and never behind the time. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Do they make a mount to put the SquareDox on the rear left right light stands?? That would change up the light effect…
Yes - we could do that...and we forgot to mention we have 4 total. They are relatively heavy so it's a 2 person job to mount them but we should revisit that approach. Thanks!
@@thesoundcouple also, I liked the mini Liminare class!
You're welcome! @@RegularTennesseeJoe
Hey Bart how do you set your Chauvet D-fi hub ? I’m trying to transmit from board to stage with an obey 70 and it won’t control lights in either auto or manual mode . Any clue ? Thanks !
Sort of getting out of my real comfort zone as we set this up a few years back and it's hard to remember everything, but assuming your DMX is configured properly, you need to make sure you have the lights and hub set to the same D-Fi channel. You didn't mention the lights you are using, but they need to be D-Fi compatible as well. The only reason why we got the D-Fi Hub is because that's what the Freedom Sticks use to communicate with. Otherwise, the rest of our lights use native DMX. www.chauvetdj.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/D-Fi_Hub_UM_Rev2_WO.pdf

why not use your subs as an array (of two)? should get you a more even bass response thru the room
More so for presentation and safety...guests love to use exposed center subs for all kinds of things...in addition to more tripod stands on each side of the stage which also impacts presentation and creates more tripping hazards.
@@thesoundcouple yeah, i thought that might be the case, the only time i remember seeing you use center subs is beneath stages/trucks
Correct - when they can be out of the way.@@maebeans
@@thesoundcouple Not your rig, the rig I used to run, the subs would cone noticeably. It was always a challenge to find the right spacing to limit the effect. Line arrays and prediction software, huge advances.
Agreed that technology has come a long ways. An offhanded related observation is that with all of this power, we watch UA-cam videos of big time concerts and we still can't hear the vocals or a guitar solo 🤨@@andykarter6866

Bart and Stacy, if you ever wanna take a small vacation in sunny California AND do a couple gigs with me, hit me up! Might be fun and help pay towards your holiday!
Ha Ha....we haven't been out there in quite a few years!
@@thesoundcouple Well it would be fun! We would learn lots from each other. Hit me up if it ever crosses your mind.
@@williamthesoundguybalestri1745 Will do!
Just when you think you have SO much time to kill......then stuff like this happens, it has happened to me and others.
Yeah - when making this video, it surprised me that it took me so long to figure out what was going on....live and learn!
This video presents an excellent example of how a professional production company makes critical adjustments, in order to maximize their flexibility in handling unique time constraints.
Bart and Stacy invested a good deal of thought and planning into how they can meet the requirements of the client and the management of this venue. There is a rather large gap in time that exists between when they must complete their set-up, when the band actually begins its performance, and how to meet the requirements of the venue for a prompt tear-down and load-out once the gig ends.
We appreciate the tutorial that Bart gave us of the lighting control provided by the Luminair lighting control system that operates the DMX fixtures employed by The Sound Couple. It was also enjoyable to, once again, see the Squareodox 3D LED Effect Lighting fixtures in operation because these units add a very unique flavor to a gig.
Bart also shows us how to calmly handle a last minute glitch of conflicting lighting apps simultaneously running on two computers.
A sincere “Thank You!” to The Sound Couple for allowing us to learn from their approach to providing professional production at another unique venue.
Thank you Dean! We always appreciate you! I should have caught the lighting issue sooner, but I guess it made for some good content!
i have to say bart, you are quite rude to stacey at times
We are all a work in process....thankfully she understands that I operate at an elevated intensity when it comes to gigs. One of the most difficult things to do as a married couple is to also be in business with each other. We have figured out each other pretty well after all of these years...but yes, there's never an excuse!
