  • The Sound Couple heads off across the border to South Dakota for a big barn wedding!
    Hosting a gig at a non-venue venue can always come with some big challenges. As a production team, we need to be prepared and be able to adapt to the environment that is provided. This is a great example of how both sides came together to pull off a successful event!
    Lot's of good info and sites in this video, so we hope you enjoy!

    With a room and band on the long wall you’ll cover toasts/announcements 1000% better by adding a pair of fill speakers on the same long wall. Shut them off during the band but they’ll carry a lot of weight during spoken word parts of the night. Doesn’t have to be big speakers too. Last wedding I did used a pair of Alto TS308s. Usually use a JBL or EV monitor on a stand

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  5 місяців тому +3

      Totally understanding what you are saying...but that extra was not included in production budget. The client gets use to the "bands" PA for speeches and toasts which is a complementary service (we receive no additional pay for doing this)....In a perfect world with better budgets and attention to detail, these types of details would get discussed amongst the organizers. That said, we covered the room adequately...much better than some of the house provided systems we have experienced as of late!

      @@thesoundcouple no doubt. I also don’t itemize fills on wedding gigs but my overall rate and number of events have gone up after making these adjustments. I also have a rate for ceremony as well as cocktail and dinner systems as well. Last summer I did one (i did a yt setup vid too) where there were 2 small systems (xr16 2 EV sx300 each) and started w ceremony, the cocktail on system2, system1 moved to dinner music then band PA took over at the end. Those small systems made as much as the main PA, and I did it all myself. Damn that was a long day tho! Anyway, thanks for the vids, neat to see how others do it

    Thank goodness the barn had some acoustic help from the drapes and ceiling drops. It would have been much harder to pull a good mix otherwise. Hey Bart and Stacy, one solution to the IEM pack loose volume control knob problem is to buy some very thin rubber washers the same diameter as the volume knob. Then, you simply take off the knob, put the rubber washer underneath, and then replace the knob pushing it down on the washer until it has a good resistance. It's now adjustable but won't turn accidentally. I've been doing this for years with my IEM packs. Works great!

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  6 місяців тому

      Funny you mention that....we were thinking the same thing. That knob has to come off, but it really seems on there so became hesitant as to not wanting to break it. Are you saying the knob comes off and put on without a problem if you pull on it hard enough?

    • @1minn1
      @1minn1 6 місяців тому

      @@thesoundcouple Yes. If you have a small, thin blade screwdriver you can use that to gently pry around the knob to help lift it up. Shouldn't be a problem.

    It was of a bit of a distance to drive-from central-eastern Minnesota all the way west across the border into South Dakota. But, for those of us who closely follow the adventures of The Sound Couple, the long trip out and back home was well worth it. This video contains a significant number of opportunities to learn through observing Bart and Stacy solve somewhat unique problems and ultimately provide production at the height of professionalism. I always appreciate the time that Bart takes to show us how he sets up the mixer. I also always learn from the sound check portion of the video.
    Kudos to both Bart and Stacy for another excellent example of how they bring their keen understanding of production to an unusual venue. The importance of working smoothly with the musicians and, ultimately, pleasing the client shines through in this video.

      aahhh...thanks Dean! We were thinking of you when we decided to make that drive home...Stacy will bring up your name when I attempt stupidity as you are always the voice of reason and common sense. Anyway, the only thing I can say is that I have years of experience driving late nights, but it's getting harder to do as the years pass and my brain has some catching up to do to my body. We do know when to pull over. Anyway, it was a great gig and do agree there were a lot of good things to share...take care!

    Create a PDF document that you can email to venues when they don’t believe you when you tell them how many circuits you need.
    I’m going to do the same.
    For my basic system, I require a minimum 6, 20 amp circuits.
    I’m gonna take a look at all the spec sheets for my equipment and type up what 70% power requires for amperage per item.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  5 місяців тому

      Totally get what you're saying, but this can be a tug of war event...if others can do it, we have to as well and we have the gear that can. Laying down the law on requirements can backfire. Instead, we prefer to flex to what is provided...we just did a wedding this past weekend on two circuits....if we only had one, we could have done that if we needed to. The requirements are stated in the contracts and if we get less, then so do they...and in the unfortunate event of failure, it's on them, not us. Our power needs have drastically reduced over the years which allows us to be more competitive and less of a hassle to the clients who don't always understand or want to pay for additional power. At the end of the day, everyone seems just as happy. Understood where there are events where this approach will not work and you simply need the power.

    In the PSM300 bodypacks there should be a setting that could lock all controls. Meaning if a musician is happy with there overall level, they can "disable" there volume knob by locking the controls.

    Really nice job. I love working barn/warehouse events; being there from the start to the end seeing the shell of a venue, it becoming something special and then going back to being a shell... There's really something special about being a part of those events. One of the venues I've attended that used to have awful sound (no thanks to the floor) is Wembley Arena. I very recently learned that there used to be a swimming pool under the arena floor that hadn't been used for years. It was an awful bass trap that made the whole place resonate low end, to the point where it would take all of the intelligibility out of the music. Until last year, I hadn't been there since 2007, vowing I would never return because of how awful it sounded. The place has been re-done and the pool has been filled in, it sounds marvellous now.

    Love it guys, for psm300 are they good for like Main monitoring usually I mix from the side if there’s no spot to mix and it’s hard to hear it and also is it good for playing music on drums too cause I love playing on drums and lastly any ways to add like Punch and attack of the kick too cause I been struggling to get that but I always think it’s not having a lot of attack

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  6 місяців тому

      We got the PSM300 originally just for that reason. After the Fix My Mix video, I decided I need a better monitoring system and went with the in-ear system...so yes, mixing off it is a thing and we do it responsibly. For kick drum mics, we are always partial to our Shure Beta 52, but in later videos, you will see that we started to use our Sennheiser e901. Technically, I still prefer the Beta 52 and it's more forgiving and flexible, but the e901 is less hassle and is out of the way on small stages...so the tradeoff is worth it in most situations. There are some drummers we will stick with our EV N/D 868 or Shure Beta 52...the Beta 52 and e901 both have that high snap more naturally. The 868 is a more flat mic that works better for softer applications or with a kick that doesn't need more attack.

    I had a bad experience with staging and cables several years ago... I was working for a lighting company, lighting a pretty high profile bar mitzvah, and after they had setup the lights, they ended up putting another row of decking in front of what they already had, and somewhere along the way, it ended up on top of a power cable running from stage left to right, and about halfway through the night, it cut through the cable, and I lost half the movers in my lighting rig, and blew the fuses on the lights as well, so I couldn't just run new power to them mid show...

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  6 місяців тому +1

      We haven't used those speakers so can't comment based on any experience with them. To offer you some advice...focus more on the application (e.g. types of venues) and the style of music to help determine you PA needs. Are you a 5 piece blue grass band or a 5 piece metal band? How loud is the band on stage? Will the PA need to overcome a loud drummer? Guitar? Are you outdoors or playing in venues with concrete floors, metal roofs, and glass walls. All of these factors play a bigger role than the size of your band. We like EV products and any of cabinets can be a good choice if they are the right ones for you...they all sound good in their respective categories. Just don't ask any cabinet to do more than it was designed to....generally, size does matter when it comes to speakers, but some of the newer speakers, like the column arrays, are putting that theory to the test by packing a good punch out of a small footprint.

      @@Paul-ze7fg Hi Paul - I am sorry that we are not able to be really specific to your situation, but there are several videos we have as well as DJ's that they share their weddings with us. Here are a few of our favorite channels: @DJ2Legit007, @DJRachelLynch, @djbrettly
