The SC - Stacy's Light Show!

- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- The Sound Couple is back for an annual fireman's fundraising event. We lucked out again on the weather and so we went forward with breaking out an almost full show with Stacy heading up the lights and providing a brief tutorial on how she approaches setting them up. As normal with these types of events, Bart is crawling under another tractor trailer, running cables and loving every minute of it!
The gig went well and we drove home with with happy clients!
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
PreSonus AVB-D16
Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.
A true sound gig log! From bright and fresh in the morning to speaking gibberish at the end of the day. Nice job guys
Thanks for sticking with us to the end!
This dude should do a drum tuning seminar! Lol. His drums have always been killer sounding, but his snare this video in particular. Just amazing.
I will pass this on to him! He recently moved so no longer with the band so you will be seeing a new drummer shortly who stepped in and is doing a phenomenal job in the drum chair!
i like it when you go out with the whole system.... Sounds super nice...
It does - makes for a long day though!
great lesson learnt..... always check the power, before powering every thing..👍
So true but can be easy to skip!
So very glad to log in and find another video from Bart and Stacy waiting to be watched, studied, and from which to learn.
Very much want to think of this particular gig as "We've Learned Our Lesson!" No subs stuck under an air-ride trailer that has lost air in the shocks because of valve leakage. "No subs were harmed during the making of this video. All videography was supervised by the National Sub Protection Society.”
Really like the new "unloading music" and the new "loading music"! And, also like the neck protection on Stacy's hat. Thank you, Bart and Stacy, for allowing us to tag along and learn.
Thanks Dean! You are truly a Sound Couple favorite! We appreciate your insights and your dedication to our channel!
Looks like I'm binge watching your videos here and there - good vibes! The summer has ended here so it means the active season also has ended where I load my car full with equipment and drive away to unpack, setup and DJ. Setting up for a live music is different and here I learned a lot about it. Thank you guys!
Thanks for binging! Pace yourself...even we think we can sometimes handle each other in small doses! Glad you're learning something - it always is amazing the difference in skill sets between the two, but there are some crossover skills too! Enjoy your time off.. I know we are glad the crazy summer schedule is behind us!
Great video again
I am in Florida it gets really hot outside. I do lots of events outdoors as well never cared about the equipment's because its a part of my business . I Never had any issues at all . So you where absolutely right. God bless u both and keep do the great work you guys do
Thanks for sharing that. Even though we only encounter very hot weather no more than 2-3 months out of the year, we still have to deal with the extreme cold as well, and have never truly had much issues either way! One would hope they would be built to withstand the "elements"!
I've seen several videos of this band but man, they're the real deal. Love every video with them!
Good bands always make it easy to work with. We are very lucky!
Nice tandem and event congrats for the prosperity event to you guys
Thank you!
I'm a Big Fan here in the Phillipines! more event's to come Sound Couple! All the Best
Thanks for watching!
Good videos! Many people do not know the hard work behind the people who work with sound, thanks for teaching us in such detail. Greetings from Venezuela
Hello! Thanks for watching! This was part of goal in starting our channel!
Have you ever considered buying Stacey a bespoke lighting desk to save her running on 3 different input controllers?
Hi Matthew, not familiar, could you provide a link?
We have a etc colorsource 20 which we use in our studio space for similar style gigs here in the UK. It's a great bit of kit. I personaly think a desk along these lines would really suit your needs. Great videos I really enjoy following along with your gigs from over here!
@@BadgerCollectiveThanks Andy...will check it out!
@@thesoundcouple Hey, I recommend the MA instead of ETC, because ETC is meant for small spaces, and MA is more flexible for shows! It is used alot more often in the show industry! Thanks!
@@willtheham1 Appreciate the additional info!
What a treat seeing this getting posted today! As an event guy, PA announcer and Santa, I love seeing these events!! Well done, Bart & Stacy!
Thank you!
Nice Pa there and I love the presonus stuff and I own the presonus studiolive 16.0.2 and that’s impressive to fit the gear in the van and keep up the good work 👍
Thank you! We appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Loving the vids, so nice to see bands with good drummers...makes such a difference!!!
Agreed! We are blessed to work with great musicians here in the Twin Cities.
This gig was brilliant! You and Stacey did an AMAZING job! All I’d say as a bit of a lighting person, with the Stilletto GLOs maybe make one of the lights spin left and right the opposite way than the other one, that’d make the gig a bit better I’d say
Thank you for that feedback. We have done some work and need to do some more work on our light programming as we ran out of time before things got too busy. We plan to revisit this some more when things slow down.
I found where I can buy the WiFi modules for the lights and console, so I have a few pieces placed to receive DMX, then that fixture feeds a cable to send signal to a string of fixtures. I use several receiver fixtures for Upstage and Downstage. The advantage is no dongle that needs either charged or plugged in. It is powered by the fixture.
That sounds intriguing - I like the idea of not having to be charged or plugged in. Would you please email us at: soundcouple@comcast.net with a few more details?
OOooohhh so much fun, sitting here, watching it on youtube🥰😍
Glad you enjoyed it!

Fantastic! One thought, every video I watch you both unload the van and Stacy is always having to look in each Rubbermaid tub to see what's in it. Have you considered just writing on the outside with a big wide Sharpie which tub has XLRs, which has speaker cables or whatever? But it's great seeing you both doing another great set up and tear down.
And it's a great tip about not putting the subs under the trailer where the suspension will lower the trailer down onto the subs!
Lol…. I was just thinking, why don’t we have different colored totes instead? Oh yeah… we were just using what we had on hand.. but I like your idea! Thanks for the suggestion.
Alternately, if you think what's in the boxes may be different each time, get some adhesive packing list pouches that are bigger (like fedex awb document pouches but available on Amazon) and put papers inside with contents written on! You could use colored paper, colored ink, or whatever for different categories if you like. Recommend pouches that are resealable, possibly with zippers.
Great video! Never stop making UA-cam videoes! I love this channel :)
Appreciate Adrian - we think we have at least a couple years left in us!
The kick is tight 😊
Thanks!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
you two guys are great bringing the best sounds setup in your country just saw your video and got signup in your channel to see more gigs god bless to you two
Thank you! Check out our past ones while you wait for the next ones!😊
Go Stacy go!
Thanks! Bart has his skill... I have lights!
cool set up.
Thanks!
Thanks Stacy nice light show great tips Go Lady Power
Thanks for watching!
Nice on the water cooler. When I was growing up nobody had water bottles it was always a water cooler and a stack of cups, which could be reused! It drives me nuts that the only portable form of water is large packs of bottles and not a large bottle with a stack of cups. Then you end up with a ton of plastic bottles you have to cart around somewhere.
Thanks. Just trying to do our part for the earth!
@@thesoundcouple I forgot to mention the crinkly bottles that's not necessarily good to fidget with crunch crunch during quiet moments. And they're so thin it's easy to spill.
@@imark7777777 Heck ya on the water spill...forgot about that but not fun when it happens!
would love to see your routing, especially your monitor mix!
We will make a point to cover that topic a bit more....I recall that we talked about some routing in this video: ua-cam.com/video/Ofti5pFd_IY/v-deo.html
I hate it when you set up a tent and it doesn't block the Sun LOL
Just wait! We have a new and improved 10 x10 to help solve that problem!
@@thesoundcouple hopefully, I was in Texas with a 13x13 and had to drop one side for it to work lol
I remembered when I was at a club in Denver. They had it LOUD (wear your earplugs kids!). So loud that halfway through someone's set, they were having amp shutdowns constantly. Then I saw why. They had their amps, off to the side of their stage, in a completely unvented cabinet. Those poor amps.
Running sound for a small libations festival next weekend. Hoping the boss lets me get some upgrades on our equipment here soon so our equipment is more outdoor ready (90% of our shows)
Thanks for sharing Austin....Good Luck!
I did an outdoor show where we had to cover the drum kit because it started warping!
Usually i am more concerned about me in the heat than the equipment. There's a band shell that I've done a couple things at where you're sitting up at 12 literally getting microwaved by the sun not fun. It's nice to have a good fan though.
Agreed on keeping yourself cool in the heat! We have an upcoming video where one of the band members had to do his part sitting in the audience due to over heating.
@@thesoundcouple really not fun. I did an event in a park and after packing up and getting in the old van with no air-conditioning and driving 10 minutes I had to stop and go into a fast food restaurant. So medically air conditioning became a requirement for a new vehicle for me. I now have 3 1/2 Lasko blower fans quiet and move some air which is great until a point where the humidity is ridiculous.
I've had digital gear go into safe mode or shut down on a full sun 90° day! They didn't break, but have to cool down to reboot!
@@XIIMonkeysMusicGroup yes I've had a few times where iPads will go into heat mode, usually I'll try and takeoff the case if I can to prolong usefulness but then I am unprotected. I've been strategic and haven't had too much issues lately but I've also been almost regularly setting a blower fan up for myself.
Although I'm using a UMPC with windows that's a little bit more heat resistant and I have a half top MacBook Pro and touch screen that lives on my rack stage side. Way better active cooling. I didn't do too many hot gigs this year mostly cold ones so warm computers are nice that and the space heaters I bring.
Yeah the gig with the drum set was not fun, it was warm out but we also we're running off a generator causing digital glitching in this other guy system (it was a pre-digital mixing console system made up of a computer and stack of audio interfaces. neat software that's been discontinued). It was one of those generators you see on the side of the highway beat to all craziness with poor regulation, It seems to stabilize with some more load.
Excellent show , on a side note would look great if you used a haze machine for a cooler effect for the lights . Also you can you Chavet show express so you don’t have to be tied down to the dmx controller
Thanks for the recommendation. We do have a hazer, and if my memory serves me, it was too windy that night to be effective. (The downfall of being on an “open” stage)
I like what yall are doing. An actual lighting console like the hog from high-end or a PC wing from chamsys or ma would make lighting much easier for yall.
Thanks! That is something we can consider in the future!
Wow! Great video! Just watched it twice! Stacy's light show looked AMAZING to me! Did the band use inner ears here? I think I only saw 2 stage monitors. Is that correct? My question is what if the band needed more stage monitors? The van seemed packed full to capacity. Anyway, I LOVE your channel so much. It reminds me of my days as a full-time sound man. So much work and I had no help. All me.
Thank you! Yes, the band is on in-ears to those monitors were used for main front fields. For other bands, we can provide up to 6 wedges which has been able to handle all the shows we do. We have done more using a combo on in-ear and wedges as well. All of our respects to your work, so appreciate your comments.
nice works you guys
Thanks! Appreciate you watching.
@@thesoundcouple i all ways watching sc video and i enjoy
Hell yeah first love your guys videos
Yup! It's your lucky day! Thanks for watching. :)
Heck yeah keep up the awsome work you to
It was very hard work and hot.
That it was..
Sometimes it surprises me how far there are between things in America. If I drove 3 hours in one direction, I could cross my entire country haha! (Denmark)
Glad we can put it into perspective! I’ve often thought the same of Europe- driving that amount we’d probably end up in another country.
Indeed
One could span three entirely different cultures in three hours of driving across Europe!
That said, there's significant culture variances across the US too.
@@FOH3663 Oh yeah we know, there are democrats and republicans according to the news we get :D
32:28 Even with a fundraiser, still have duty calls!
That’s for sure!
The idea of separating fixtures into groups so that presets don’t need to address all fixtures makes sense. I’ll be using that one. Regarding all those presets, how do you actually create each one. 1) Randomly make adjustments until you find a look you like then save as a preset. 2). Find existing presets in the fixture itself then save that as a luminaire preset or 3)??
It's more #2. We set up all of the lights and looked at fixture presets and created our own scenes. For our Stiletto Glo's, it was more #1 since they don't have presets. We like separating between the two iPads because it gives us a bit more orchestrating between scenes. One iPad is for our base lighting package (lights we would use within every gig) and another is more for movers and specialty lighting. We want to focus on using our pre-built scenes, not programming lights at show.
@@thesoundcouple Thx very much. Great videos as always!
The only think I could suggest is sub placement. They all should be in the middle. And avoid going under a stage at all possible. Left right cause comb filtering. And with the amount of subs you have you could do a cardioid sub setup. There are a few different ones. Check out Michael Curtis here on UA-cam.
Thanks for your insights Justin!
Hey guys, absolutely love the videos! Just a quick question, what are the panel type lights by the drummers feet at the 29:27 minute mark??
Thanks for watching! Those are Chauvet COLORpallette lights. They work good in small spaces!
Get LightKey for mac! Super simple to use and has an effect creator!
Thanks for the suggestion! Will have to check that out!
Hey, since you work with Rhino alot. Any chance you know where they got those Back Line Scrims?
I would be happy to ask them next time we work with them in the next few weeks- stay tuned!
Here is the info from them:
Scrims: smartpress.com
Stands: displays2go.com
0:07 how old is this video! Based on the corn, this must've been filmed around June 3rd. Lol
Close! This gig was June 17th. We got very busy, haven’t had a weekend off since the beginning of May and got a little behind. Good news for you means that we’ll be able to post well into the fall with “new” gigs! 😂
Big fan of you guys !!!
From Honduras
I really like seeing you working as a power couple .
I wish my wife would load like Stacy jajaja !!!
1 bought 4 cdl12 like you guys but only 2 subs , do you think I would need to buy more subs to really take advantage of my midhighs ?? For a live rock and roll band ????
Congrats on your investment! We hope they work out for you! We have plenty of examples where we use one sub. For us, it really comes down to the type of shows we do. If we are covering a larger area and know that we need to push the system, we will use 4 subs. If we are doing a show where modest low end will work or we may be concerned about volume, a single sub on each side will get the job done.
I am lucky that Stacy is a hard worker!
Acaranya sukses ramai sekali dan suond sistem anda sangat bagus, saya suka dengan sound sistem anda.. 👍👍👍 semangat terus💪💪💪..
Terima kasih banyak!
nice...can you make a list of the equipment you use
Check it out in the description of our videos. 🙂
@@thesoundcouple thank you God Bless U 😇😇
Got to know the DB app you have. Is it pretty accurate? I was going to purchase one but that seems better!!
The app we use is called "Decibel Meter" off the Apple App Store. When I first tried, I compared it to our "real" dB meter, and it was very accurate. However, now that I think about it, I can't remember which weighting I was comparing it against. We will make a note to demonstrate the app compared to a dB meter...thanks! For our purposes, the app is so convenient...but I would break out the real one if we were in a volume debate with someone.
@@thesoundcouple nice!! Thank you for the reply!! I will give it a try!!
@@RegularTennesseeJoe You're welcome!
Where u guys got the rack power distribution? Look nice with the rack case
We keep it very simple. We have a Motion Labs unit for 220v distribution and use power strips around the stage. We also mostly use Furman power conditioning in our racks.
Was there a big gap between the two trailers?
They do a good job at this event at getting the trailers really close...there is a transition by design of the trailer where you need to be careful. In our Welcome to the the Sites, Sounds and Rain video, they laid down plywood, which was a first for us, but that really made for a really nice surface.
Hi, I just picked up a few Squardox's and was wondering what cases yu use for them to transport? Also did you fabricate the stands for them?
Hope you enjoy them! The stands are simply guitar stands, and the cases, Stacy custom made!
Hey Nigel - Bart here as well..yes, Stacy made the cases which is very fortunate, but please let us know what you end up doing for a case and let us know how the fixtures are working out for you. I think it's a really neat light, but they don't wow me and maybe we need to be using them differently.
@@thesoundcouple I have 3 and assempled them in a triangle first then put them side by side and immediately ordered 2 more to make a simi triangle to use on my DJ booth facade. When I had only unboxed one it wasn't the wow as you say but when you have them in numbers it's a big WOW for me and at 270 ea at Kpodj they're a deal. It's hard to tell how huge and heavy they are on the youtube, but they are big, heavy and to me, impressive! When I find a case solution I will deffinitly let you know what I came up with.
@@nigel8649 Thanks - that does sound like a cool use case for them. You have us thinking now in perhaps that connecting them may be more effective. In this world of everything being made to minimum requirements, these are very well built and are solid! Nothing feels cheap about them for sure.
please do vlog about how to connect light to ipad. pleas
We will add it to the list! In a nutshell, the iPad connects to the network and we have an Enntec ODE to bridge to the DMX protocol.
Is this a Lights,Lasers and Fireworks event with music.
Whether we like it or not, that's the direction it's heading. We lost most of their business because we couldn't adequately support their lighting needs they want. Look at the big shows...it's all about the lights. Now bands at our level our moving to video boards as well.
Sorry to ask this, but how much do you charge for sound and lighting for and event this size?
Hi Mark! We typically like to leave the business books out of the comments section. We are likely more expensive than others in our class but less expensive than a real production company.
How much money do you get for this show?
Hi Ninh- unfortunately we don’t want to talk about our books on a public forum. Our pricing is fair to our customers, but we do price perhaps at more of a premium in our class, but we feel we are worth it (and Bart is getting old and needs more motivation!)
Maybe don't use you're phone to measure dB levels lol. Also I'd recommend using some proper lighting software like showxpress, adj something, MA. Movers don't look really good with an cheap lighting console. Also it would be easier to run lights on 1 software, console than juggling 3 different means of control
Not trying to be rude, just helping out some people new to this industry. 🙂
Thanks for your feedback! We have compared our phone app to a real meter and the phone is very comparable. As far as our lighting “consoles” this works for the size of our company and shows that we do! We are not lighting experts by any means!
Why was the main so quite or was it just the cameras mic
Not sure which part you were referring to, but most shows run around 100dB.
@@thesoundcouple oh no sorry i commented this before i saw you phone with the db meter
the downside to the sound team is they're always or most times the last to leave. Sounds good guys.
Thank you! We try to stay positive on tear downs as they can be somewhat enjoyable. At this particular gig, it was a beautiful night and quiet so it wasn't bad at all!
@@thesoundcouple I'm happy that you guys can find joy in it.
What is the name of that square led light you guys use
Those are the Squarodox by Blizzard.
Lighting is my kryptonite! I know nothing about DMX and lighting!
I think that’s true for a lot of sound guys. We’re lucky we’ve figured out this much!😂
You don't need all those controllers for those lights one lap top and a dmx software works.
We understand that there could be some things combined. However, logically, it makes more sense to keep the controllers separated based on what fixtures we are using at a gig. Our ODE controller supports 2 DMX universes so we are working with that as well. We have Luminair for Mac which we do use on occasion, however, we typically prefer the freedom that the iPad provides.
I love your work guys and also, I have to say, artists sometimes? They are really lazy and not bringing the best attitude to work as a team with sound and lighting team. Great work as always! Congrats. Love from Chile!
Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!
Can i know, what dmx software in ipad?
We are using Luminaire.
What stand do you use to hold up your Squarodox?
We use a basic guitar stand!
Oh ok thanks what about the cases what would you recomend
@@1carlfrank Stacy made the cases for ours. If we were to buy one, would probably go with a suitcase styled case and cut out a pad. You could also contact Blizzard to see if they have any recommendations? They are a very responsive company.

What is the reason using 3 different devices for lights wouldn't it be way way easier using 1 software on your laptop for all lights so every effect works with the whole rig not just some lights if you need some help you can send me a dm on discord or insta best regards Rens
Our lighting system has grown over time and how much and what we use changes from gig to gig. Our devices reflect that fact as we use custom scenes that are programmed by which groups of fixtures we are using. We break it into device group: core lighting, intel/candy lighting and Sqarodox's. With this approach, we can maintain/create scenes that don't need to address every fixture and we can independently choose, at least by device group, what scenes we want, or none as well.
Not saying there isn't a better way, but this is how ours developed.
