Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

Seriously, make this one. Imma give you a soap hack recipe for a VERY expensive product soon.
HEEEELLLPPP!!! 😱 PLEASE🙏. I've attempted my first batch of hot process liquid soap but just converted my regular cold process soap recipe to a dual lye hot process one. Weeelllll I got to the lighter color "mashed potato" stage but no further even after cooking it for an hour on high. So i waited overnight soaked a pound broken up in a 1:2 ratio of water and today i checked it and it looks like the slime like in those videos that the kids make. I cooked it again on high for almost 2 hours and it got a bit closer to that "vaseline" stage but it still looks like it's just going hard and crumbly and solid again. What am i doing wrong?
can i use my cp recipe to make my hp liquid soap? I am about to dive into it but i'm unsure if i need to create a new recipe.
Can you please give me the link for the 1st one in this series?
@@arielkidder136 You overcooked it. Hot process needs much more water than CP does, but how much more did you use? Not all batches will exhibit all the stages. I wouldn't bother with dual lye until you are more comfortable with HP.
Just wanted to ote down the percentage of water to out in soap calc? Can anyone help? 😁
I made my own soap paste....and it turned out great! I like how you teach....it makes me feel like I can do it...and it's okay to make mistakes! You are not negative, you have a positive approach to mistakes; I love this about your teaching and videos! I like how you have a matter-of-fact approach, and there is always a way to fix it, and you can do it! (I am referring matter of fact too....the spectrum of grey quote.....I can't remember the exact words). Thank you for your knowledge!
I have watched this video SO many times! I wrote out the recipe and actually wrote out the words, "mixy-mix" and "stir-stir!' Just know, you have a fan for life! Hands down, you have the BEST content!!!
It’s the mixy-mix that really makes the recipe shine. 😂💗
@@MrsSoapAndClay You are just too funny. For me funny that I watched a couple of you you tube videos and decided you were not gonna work out for me. Few weeks later I am still watching you and then I sign up for like the basic patreon, next few weeks I sign up for a higher level. I kept putting off finding a new therapist but I recently found one and her personality is much like yours as well as mine. You could be a therapist and make good money and then you would probably never need one (if you do have one)just get a kick out of you every week and the othersoapers that follow you. Mr. S&C is funny too. Maybe you guys could do a comedy show online , and you would have more viewers than the internet could handle. Have a good weekend,
I've watched a lot of soapers on UA-cam but none of them are as informative as you are. I feel smarter as a soaper from watching your channel. Thanks for all you do!
You taught me to make soap. You are a soap goddess! seriously! Watching you, I feel confident making soap. I am new and I am loving this soap making stuff. I made your paste and I made a whipped sugar scrub too, just like you taught. I made a mistake somewhere, not sure what I did wrong, but I couldn't break up all the soap paste, little tiny bits here and there in my scrub, but overall it was good...I liked it better than the Stephenson. Thank you so much for all your teaching!
I absolutely adore and appreciate you! I just had to say that. Thank you so much for being a kind, authentic and lovely woman! I'm new to the soap-making world and am loving it! You have helped me SO much!
This is great. I’ll be making my first cold process soap soon but I love watching stuff like this to know about all the possibilities in the future
I just made it. Thank you. I have been loving playing with your recipes.
Made this the first time yesterday and wow it was so easy with your directions and it’s so much for the little ingredients used Thank you so much!!
Thank you!! I’m a hot process soap maker and I can’t wait to make this. I’ve been watching all of your videos from the start… for over a week now! LOL! You’re an absolute delight and I’m learning a lot. Thank you for all you do!
Thank you so much for all of your videos. I have been a subscriber since your first video! I have learned so much from you that have really helped me take my soap business to the next level. Your soap paste video was a game changer. I was able to make so many things, sugar scrub bars, bubble bath, and foaming sugar scrub!
Made it. LOVE IT. Thanks Mrs Soap & Clay!
Thank you for your recipe, looking forward to the video for the recipe on the next project with soap paste!
Thank you! I love recipe days!
Very cool. On next weekend list of things to do.
OMG I am making this! Thank You Thank You Thank you!! I just want to say how much I absolutely love you! A1 personality, I love the brutal honesty! Your videos have helped me TREMENDOUSLY!
Thank you so much! It was so easy and it came out very well! Whipped sugar scrub is next! God bless you for your hard work!
You would have to be one of the best soap creators on you tube. I love how honest and real you are. I’ve only just found you. Thanks for your generosity.
OH MY GOD! I was so overwhelmed with trying to figure out how to do this. You just explained it in perfect easy to follow instructions and made it so easily! Thank you so much for teaching and sharing this with us. I look forward to the next segment on making the whip! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! ;)
Perfect Soap Paste Recipe!!! OMG!!! Follow her directions and this is a super easy BEST recipe!!! Thank you Mrs. Soap & Clay
10k! WOO HOO! 💜
Mics working, looking outside is the best place to look for answers. Thanks for another great recipe and advice. 😊
Ok I have made the paste!!! I am going to try the whipped soap tomorrow (hopefully). Thank you so much for this recipe. I can't wait to try it out!!
I love you 💕. Thank you for sharing this recipe and explaining how to calculate dual lye 🥰
I already feel like we're going to need a series of videos on the different ways to use soap paste!!! I love how it was already bubbling when you added water to it!! Exciting!
Definitely need this playlist
Would like so much!!!!
That would be amazing
Can i ask something: I made a batch yesterday of soappaste and it’s very hard - is this normal?
It could be cooked a bit longer than needed, or the water discount was high, but it will be fine to use in products.
I am so glad you showed up in my feed, the algorithms have preformed well. You have another subscriber.
Yeah, I agree N.A.M. I was looking for soaping vids and up pops Mrs Soap and Clay. I subscribed after the first video and have been hooked ever since. So much great information.
Holy Cow!! This is a game changer! Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! I immediately made this after seeing the video. It could not have been any easier, and the results today... Wow. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I appreciate all that you teach us.
Love recipe day!! I made your soap paste from year 1. Awesome stuff. And yea bases have become very expensive. Why buy when you can make!! Thank you for this. Much appreciated
I made it!!! It was so easy. I can’t wait to make a Whipped Soap. Thank you for the wonderful recipe with detailed explanations & many many thanks for sharing your knowledge 🥰
OMG!! I love, love, love your channel! I just found you and boy am I glad I did. Thanks so much for sharing your recipes and your knowledge.
Love this recipe! How do we calculate how much paste we will need in each different recipe? Also, can you please do a bubble bath recipe day!!
I am rather new to the soaping industry, so have quickly become a great fan! I made this paste and doubled the recipe. I cooked it longer than you, and today find it is still a tad wet. Hopefully that is normalish and once dry I can store until I want to use it for something in 10 minutes. Thank you for all you do! You are helping me greatly!!!
Just finished making this recipe. I’ve been making soap paste but not dual lye. Hands down your recipe “cooked” absolutely amazing and now I’m super excited to make the whipped soap sugar scrub with it tomorrow! Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm so excited for this! Soap paste is actually on my "to do" list today, but I've never done it with dual lye. I'm hoping to see some tips in here for saving my stick blender. I got two batches done last spring (one for household cleaning and one for hands and body) and the second one killed my stick blender.
You're the best, thank you!!!!
Making this soap paste is a total blast! I thought making cold process was fun but this...oh my gosh. Thank you for this. Tomorrow will be whipped sugar scrub. Can’t wait for your next video to see what to do with soap paste
I love the science behind soap making (bringing me back to AP chemistry). I never once thought I would revisit chemistry and I am remembering so much. Your videos are truly enlightening and cut through the nonsense of the less science centric videos. It has taken me multiple rewatches, but I am finally getting it and wanted to express my gratitude for your great content. I am just so excited that my paste is cooking now and looks like everything is on the right path. Thanks! : )
I made a batch of soap paste using your recipe and made whipped sugar soap scrubs and soap cream with the paste. My family and I LOVED the products. Thanks for sharing the recipie.
Wish you and your family a blessed holiday season 💖
I just recently discovered your channel and I cannot wait to get home from vacation and start making some of your recipes! 💗
I do care about your beautiful skin, but most importantly I want you to know that you're a wonderful person and teacher 💞🙏🏾
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I haven’t tried hot process yet but now feel like I need this in my life. I look forward to making all the things with soap paste videos. Hope your arm is doing ok.
Thanks so much for this! I can't wait to see whipped soap made from this (I was sad when the video ended)! Take care!
Cool Mrs. Soap & Clay! I have a recipe for a bath whip , but I'll certainly give this a whirl and come back!
Jill Gross
Nice!
I was hoping to see a hot process soap, and there you went and did it!
Mrs soap and clay thank you for sharing your information. I have made my first soap past 🤩 and my first attempt to hot process soap, and I made your whiped soap sugar scrub aswell.
Thank you Mrs soap and clay I enjoyed doing both recipes and looking forward to making more of your recipe and watching all your UA-cam videos
I took mine straight from the heat into the stand mixer and started whipping. I also heated the glycerin to incorporate an additive. It went together beautifully and still got nice and fluffy 😁
Thank you for sharing your recipe & knowledge
Thank you! So glad to discover you! I’m always looking for ways to use better ingredients and save the surfactants for the shampoo bars!
This was so so easy! I made a whipped soap base using surfactants and it was way pissier, and certainly way way more expensive! Love this! Thank you
Thank you for teaching us a lot of things
Awesome versatile recipe!!!!
I %100 agree. We do what fits for us. I choose to have separate tools for soaping but that just me. I got most things from second hand stores. I do soap in my kitchen because that’s what works for me now.
Hi watching from Trinidad and Tobago and when you got splashed I was very concerned. So you see we do care about you. Thanks for being my mentor and training me. Books and classes are so expensive. You Rock Sister
This is amazing. Thank you so much
OMG made the soap paste today ,sooooooo easy. Tomorrow I will make your whipped soap and the batharons. You are the 100% best!!!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
im so ready to learn the whipped sugar scrub . love your videos. love year 2. loved year 1 too tho learned so much!!
Your video encouraged me to go hot processing once more! I'm a soaper making and selling my organically constructed cold process soaps and other skin products and now will be making this soap paste to be more creative and diverse with my soap making Insha'a Allah! Many thanks and lots of prayers your way! 🧼🧽
Love recipe days! Haven’t done hot process but on the never ending list.
Hi there Mrs S&C, new soaper here. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Tried making this soap paste and it was a success, then I tried making a sugar scrub, everything was a success, now I need a larger Kitchen Aid but now I'm walking around like the cat that ate the canary.
Love your personality and take no prisoner's attitude. Stay humble and blessed.
I made it . It is amazing thank you💗
Finally did this and love how it turned out! Thank you for all you do and explaining things so well! I can't wait to try whipped sugar scrub! I'd like to make the clarifying shampoo bar starting with the soap paste. You're awesome!!
Look at that, you hit 10k😁..Congratulations!
Thank you for sharing ❤️ we use doll hairs too btw 😊 love your videos!
I’m so excited! I got my cast off last week and I’m able to walk on my leg without crutches a little bit now so I made me this soap paste tonight! Yay!! I’m back in my happy place again! After it sits overnight , I’m gonna make me some whipped sugar soap scrub! Thank you for this recipe so much❤️
Woo hoo! Have fun! Check the whipped sugar soap scrub playlist if you need assistance!
I am so excited to try this recipe today!! I watched this video like 20 times, and then bought the ingredients to make some Rice Kristin's after I'm done lol! Thanks SO much for sharing your knowledge.
Have fun! Let us know how it goes!
@@MrsSoapAndClay I will!!! That lye mixing is mind blowing 🤯
Love your channel ❤ thank
I have wanted to add liquid soap to my line for so long, but it seemed to be a pain in the ass lol...I hope that recipe is on the recipe day list!! XOXO
Cant wait for the sugar scrub day! Thank you!
Just make the sugar scrub last night and i just love it. My daughter said it’s the best so far I’ve ever made. I sent you the result in mail box of Facebook. Coloured it with mint green, Scented it with white tea. Sprinkled some poppy seeds. Just love love love it. I am so glad that you gave away such a beautiful product. I don’t have to care whatever about Stephenson anymore. Lol
That’s so awesome! Today’s video is actually testing the Stephenson’s base against this recipe, so that’s super fun timing as well!
Oh I can’t wait to try it. I just got into sugar scrubs and just ordered about 50 bucks in Stephenson base 🤦♀️
Thank you. Great information. I like hot process.
I’ve watched this so many times. I’ve made bar soap for 6 years through all different methods, and I’ve made liquid soap once. I’m watching it one more time before I dive in 😅
Have fun!
I ♥️ this recipe... And I'm probably doing it wrong. 🤣 I made it two days ago...not to make the liquid soap, but I did, and it's amazing! I'm thinking about making shampoo with it. But I'm not sure if I should add the extra ingredients with the recipe or when I dilute it [Suggestions welcome 😉]. I have hard water, so I need something to help with that residue. Anyway, today I formulated it to make a pine tar version. OMG! No seizing at all. With that said... Both batches I put the oil in, warmed it, made the lye mix, poured it straight in hot, and blended (hand mixed with the pine tar) and it went to I guess what you call mashed potato. Fluffy, moussey, fluffy home cooked pudding, like that. And it never changed. I did the 5 and 10 minute cooks (A little longer on the pine tar to be sure) then put it in a bag in a lidded container and let it sit. It's just like yours in the end, but I was confused because in the video you said it takes a lot longer, but a 15 minute cook time is short IMO. How do you know when it's done? Anyway so far so good. I'll see how the pine tar version works in a few days. You said no matter what you do you can't screw it up, and I'm just gonna go with that. 😁 anyway, love your videos and your chemistry/experimental mind. I've always only made cold process soap with tallow. And this past year started a business and am venturing out in other directions. Your videos help so much in that. Thank you! 🙇🏻♀️
I love making hot process soap 🥰
Thank you so much for your content. The first video of yours that I came across, I thought you were a bit rude. As I continue watching more of your videos, I get you & actually love your personality. You don't sugar coat, you get to the point and enjoy your realness along with your knowledge. Bless you and your business to continue to successful.
Ha! I’ve always been an acquired taste. That’s mostly worked to my benefit as it has staved off potential dramatic or overly needy friends most of the time. 😂
Thank you
I am so glad I found you! ☺️ I wish I had 12-15 yrs, ago!
I am a Hot Process soap maker. Like the MASSES....I dreamt of making all types of body care! The COMPLICATED directions, for this type soap.....really stressed me out, of making it. Now, here it is Christmas soon. And after a 5 year break( I didn't think I'd return...a very traumatic event, caused my passion to leave. And no amount of pleading/ begging, convinced me to try again. And I personally NEEDED my PASSION....well, I finally decided I would AGAIN, for Christmas gifts! 😊 I also had HOPE to make my family members Soap Sugar Scrubs too. Now....I just MAY still!! 😁
Iv also been growing customers as well! In 2 months!! And my little towns pharmacy too! So Sugar Scrubs would be so "nice", to add as well!
But
Can you please tell me, can I purchase KOH at a Hardware store, as well??? Can I ask for plain KOH.....??? I really don't need a LOT of it, either! At least for now!!! And just MAYBE I will require more.....apparently......I AM the only Soapmaker in my area!!! I DREAMED of "this"!! And I thank you, for all you teach, in plain English! And look forward to expanding my knowledge, thru you!
I’m so glad you’re finding joy in the process again! ❤️ To the KoH, I’ve never attempted to purchase any caustics from the hardware store, so I’m not sure! You can pick it up on Amazon, however.
I just cooked up my first batch of soap paste. It is currently sitting in the back room to cool & I’m so excited to make a batch of sugar soap scrub for my girls! No spending a bazillion doll hairs on the brand name again. And I feel like I truly made this for my girls and not just buying someone else’s product.
Full disclosure: I have viewed this video about 8 times and just today I noticed you took the top off your immersion blender. I wondered if mine did too and sure enough, it twist right off! 😂😂 Probably shouldn’t tell on myself, but I thot it was funny! Had that thing for nearly 3 years now.)
First and foremost THANK YOU so so much for making these fantastic, easy to follow, "OMG I can do this"-videos! They've been so helpful in overcoming the soap imposter syndrome! :D. I am super new to soap making and tried your recipe but for whatever reason I can't get the soap to trace (even when stick blending for 10 minutes). Is there a special technique with the stick blender or do you have any guesstimates as to what I may be doing wrong (probably a whole lot). Thank you so so much!!!
Soap paste is necessary 😍😍😍😍
I agree!
I have no issues with making it just beware if you use a fragrance oil with a lot of vanillin it will discolor just like soaps! At least mine did.
Your AWESOME
Thanks 😊
hello, thank you for your knowledge, I appreciate you! I didn't have any mango butter on hand but I plugged in lard into soap calc for giggles and grins and it very comparable. I haven't tried it yet but I'm going to do a little bit of experiments. Have a wonderful day!
Let us know how it goes!
@@MrsSoapAndClay I’m playing around with tallow, and I have noticed it makes the soap bars very creamy, very nice. I made a turmeric milk honey soap and used 300 g each tallow olive oil canola oil and coconut oil hot process and it has lovely bubbles, a nice glide on the skin and feels very good, not drying, rinsed off. ☺️ I’m just a baby soap maker so I’m experimenting, and it’s so fun!
@@MrsSoapAndClay ok, we took 7 oz 50/50 beef tallow coconut, (not lard) chopped it up and put in the crockpot on low with 7 oz water and 6 oz glycerine. Oh and 2.8 oz steric acid. Melted it all down a few hours and put in a bowl with Saran Wrap for a couple days because we got busy. So today we got out the old kitchen aid from the basement and we added a little bit of water maybe 1.5 Oz altogether. Whipped the shit out of it added equal weight of sugar and it turned out the fluffiest meringue type soap I’ve ever seen! Thank you ! Me and the husband are going to do an experiment today we are going to make our own glycerin 😝. Gotta have fun and keeps the brain working.
Thanks for recipe, will try it tomorrow. When you take off heat do you remove from crock pot, or let it sit in there over nite, but just not on the crock pot base. I will make your sugar soap-scrub from this.
Please make a video showing how to make all the different products with this soap paste!! For me, specifically bubble bath and whipped sugar scrubs!!!!
I’ve done so! More coming, but the whipped sugar scrubs are for sure out, and I think maybe liquid soap?
Check out day 81, that's where the Whipped Sugar Scrub recipe day is.
Loving your videos! New subscriber. Can you use this for salt scrubs as well?
Love your videos! Would def try this recipe as I really like using whipped soaps! Can I check what's the purity of KOH used here? Is the weight listed in recipe provided assuming 90% purity?
I love you, very funny.
OK it turned out really pretty white and fluffy in the first day I used it it suds ok the next day flat it that result of me over super fatting it🤔
Love your videos! I used cocoa butter because I didn’t have mango. Then made whipped soap with your recipe but not much lather. Using the distilled water, steric acid, glycerin. I didn’t use sugar. Don’t know if I did something wrong. If I wanted to add sci, do you know when or how much to add?
Hello! When you take it off the heat, do you leave the crock pot lid on to cool overnight? I am so excited to use this paste tmrw! Thank you for another awesome recipe!!!
Ok soap i made this. Just switched out mango for shea. First time ever using potassium hydroxide. First time in over 30 years I slashed lye in my face too..... but my main question is since I had to tame a climbing beast and failed during the second cook, I ended up at Vaseline stage and just kind of got stuck there. The soap/ish is pasty but alot softer than yours seems. Think it still has alot of extra water in it. Would that effect at all in using it for whipped soap? Another first for me.
Anyway.... it does create an Abscene amount of suds and foam. My table is still foamy if you add water. And I clean up with cider even. Lol
Funny story as you were talking about crock pots.....I made in a non stick pan.....well, it ate the coating off the pan......so. Don't do that, lol. Whoops.
I am wondering if this recipe gets better over time? Kinda like curing? I made this a year ago to make whipped soap sugar scrub. It didn't turn out great for me. I just came back to revisit whipped sugar soap scrubs with this paste, and it tuned out PERFECTLY! Was it a year of gained soapy experience? Possibly? Anyway, thank you for all your videos. You are an amazing teacher.
Question: Does it have to sequester (rot) before use? Also, I recall you saying in a much earlier video that you were going to change your formulation of your foaming sugar scrubs. Did you decide to go with surfactant base for those? Or will you be selling them using this soap paste? I have been dying to try a cream soap recipe so this should be my first. I have tried several of the surfactant-based whipped soaps and have not been in love with any of them sadly. You don’t know how much this helps me!!!!
Can't wait to try this! I don't have mango butter right now though, can I substitute shea butter?
In another comment I read she said you can easily sub the mango for shea :) That was my question, too!
I did it!!!😊
i am so excited about this paste. One problem, I've followed along to a "T" and the final stage, after the last five min cook, and mine doesn't look any different than before the final five min. what should I do? Mine d didn’t get dark and render down. Looks more light and airier than your paste. I did let it cook a little longer than the last five min, but no change. I’m certain all my measurements were exact
Just. Are the soap paste, love it. Do you need to cure it?
I just made this but the color is much lighter than your lovely honey color. Consistency seems right though. When making foaming sugar scrub, is it absolutely necessary to use preservative? (I will be selling it, but trying to keep my products as natural as possible). By the way, you are brilliant! I love your straightforward, matter of fact way of explaining things.
Will make after next ingredient supply order. Have never worked with mango butter. Could I use shea or tallow? Any hardish oil/butter in place of? Or do I just need to order the mango? Also... LOVE you for saving us the $$$$ on all the things to do! Thank you for that! Because now I will never buy a base!!!
Shea and mango are easily interchangeable in this one!
