  • Odyssey, Accord, Ridgeline, Honda, Acura P0740 FIX! Don't rebuild your transmission. This problem caused a jolt of the transmission and a chirping of the tires when it would happen. It would have a violent shift from first to second and second to third. It is all due to a bad Linear Solenoid Assembly Honda Part number 28250-P6H-024.
Buy it from the Honda Dealership if you can but there are other places that sell it, Amazon.com and junkyards. I picked up the one I got from the junk yard.

The symptoms you describe are what my 4 cylinder Accord is doing, but it gave the codes P0700 and P0780. I changed the fluid and it's starting to shift better. Will be attempting to clean the filters on this solenoid to see if it stops the hard shifts.

If this is actually what is wrong with my transmission, I'd be over the moon! Recently bought a 2001 Accord V6 Coupe that I wanted to rebuild and keep as I love the car. One of the issues that has refused to go away was this hard shifting. Thanks a lot for the tip.

Thank you for the excellent quality video showing this replacement! I've just ordered the part from Amazon for $67 and will see how I do on the replacement. :-) I know lots of people have good luck with just removing it and cleaning it but since it's the wife's car I wanted to try to only work on it once for the fix. I'll clean up the original one and keep it as a backup.

Yes it fixed my problem. But know this, it does not always fix the problem. I have seen where it has been a grounding problem on the transmission (good grounds on the transmission). Also if there are solenoids failing internally, changing it might not fix the problem.

I really wouldn’t recommend any of the aftermarket ones they are all garbage, buy the genuine Honda one, the cheapest ones I’ve found online is 300, or you can buy a used working genuine one for much cheaper but if you want the new solenoid to last another 100k-200k miles get the new Honda/Acura genuine one.

I have a 2002 Acura TL Type S with 200Kms on it. Transmission was rebuilt about 100kms ago.Great Video. Hopefully this will help me also. Ordered the part off Ebay for $100 yesterday so waiting for it to come in. P0740 was coming on for a while. Car would rough idle at start, but once warm would be fine. Car did randomly stall when coming to red light (twice). Started immediately and i didn't even notice it stalled as it was very quite and no roughness. Lack of power steering and power brakes was the only way i knew. I did take both solenoids out yesterday, cleaned them and put them back in to test, filters were not dirty and problem is still there. Code did go away, but car is not shifting properly. Lagging to go in reverse and drive. Also prior to this, at hwy speeds sometimes the TCS light would come on and that's when the code came on also, but car would run fine. I have owned the car for 5+ years and haven't had a single issue with it other than regular maintenance. So don't mind that it needs service now. Very happy with it. Do you think it could be any other issues with it? I am really really hoping that it is just the dual linear solenoid that needs replacing, fingers crossed. But based on my description, do you think it could be anything else?
I do hear an odd humming noise while car is running. Transmission fluid was changed a few months ago with Honda OEM oil as was filter. Oil is clean and filters on the solenoids has not even a spec of debris.

The Honda Odyssey had a LOT of transmission problems. I think it is wise to put a AT filter in the line to pull out any metal shavings before they do extra harm...which from the sound of it is almost inevitable. Not sure if the solenoid problem is related. I have heard that they get gunked up and can be cleaned.

Thank you very much for this very well done and thorough video. I just changed out the shift solenoid in my 2002 Honda Odyssey with 235,000 miles. Check engine light was on and I could not pass inspection. Some shops told me I should replace the transmission. So far, a week later with daily driving the check engine light has not come back on. I also replaced the A, B shift solenoid, they were $34 apiece. Below is the part numbers from Honda and part numbers from local parts stores in case it might be helpful. Thank you again.

Great vid, I will keep this in mind as I have a 07 odyssey and 19 Ridgeline
For a P0744 code , TCC solenoid Intermittent. This was on a 2001 maxima 203k miles see below story
It ended up being dirty fluid, car had over heated few years ago but hadn’t change ATF fluid after that. The ATF has a heater/cooler loop they radiator.
So the overheating shorten the fluid life and burned it
What looks like fixed the transmission for me
    1) drain ATF
    2) fill with 1 bottle
Of Lucus , and remainder valvoline synthetic ATF (it was compatible with Nissan Madic-j)
    3) clear the code
    4) code came back after 70 miles
Continue to drive because it did drive a lot better
After 300 miles it was about 70% better
After 600 miles is was getting a lot better. After 900 miles almost back to normal, I double check the fluid again. It was a little high so I pumped out about 1/2 a qt. And the car was driving almost back to normal. The shift from 1->2 was a little high rpm but much better. Also manually cleared code
It hasn’t come back and it has been a week now.
Think I am going to drain and fill the atf again in a few months to get out more of the old fluid. Only about 1 gal comes out , the other 1gal is in the I Torque converter,
Never do a ATF flush. Only drain and fill.
Some transmission are sealed so either pump it out with transfer pump or drop pan.
The maxima is actually my son’s car now. And they my own work basically saved apx 2,400 in repair costs including other stuff
    - plugs
    - coil
    - speed sensor
    - break switch
    -transmission issue
Now this weekend he is getting taught to change oil and reseal tail lights
Tail lights are leaking water into trunk.

  • @kesu90
    @kesu90 5 років тому +1

    Hi Bundy, several question here.
For a regular person who does not have another Linear Solenoid as spare, how would you know the Linear Solenoid is the root cause of the issue? What methods would you use to diagnose the failures? I hear some people use multi meter to measure the ohms resistance against OEM SPEC. Is there another way you can hookup Bluetooth scan tool and look at computer readings from the scan tool? If so, what would you look for?
I have a 245k miles 2002 Acura tl Type S with B7WA transmission rebuilt less than 1k miles ago , and recently it has hard shifting and studded sometimes. One day there were 5 consecutive hard shifts. Shortly after, CEL, VSA, triangle warning light with ! mark all turned out. P0730 code was observed through scan tool. All gears had no power and was slipping like a mad man. (I think the car was put on limp mode) When you turn the car off and back on, it will work fine and then shudder again when accelerating.
I just spent over $2k on the rebuild and want to properly diagnose the issue before just replacing parts randomly (Especially this $300+ part). There are also numerous solenoids on the B7WA transmission.
Since the transmission was recently rebuilt, Transmission fluid is new(I check fluid and its still bright pink with no burnt smell), ATF filters are new, friction material is new, torque converter was re manufactured. With that said, the screens for the solenoids should not be clogged or dirty.
Also, are Linear solenoids rebuild-able to factory spec?
Besides direct size fitment, what makes the Amazon and Ebay Solenoids an inferior product compared with OEM? Dont they use the same metal, connectors and electrical components?
Any advise here would be helpful.

Hey Bundy, love the videos! You mentioned in one of your replies here that replacing the solenoids doesn't always fix the problem and it potentially could be bad transmission grounds; could you elaborate more on this or point out where the correct grounds are located please?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  4 роки тому

Thanks for watching. Yeah sometimes the grounds that come from Honda/Acura become compromised over time. We just run our own ground when we suspect a problem. Find a bolt or not on the transmission that will provide a good ground and then we will run our own brand new ground to the battery tray or a ground on the core support. Electricity follows the path of least resistance so if you make your own good ground, it will bypass the old compromised ground on its own.

Hi Bundy Thanks for the helpful video. Hoping you might assist me with a diagnose and solution. I'm not a mechanic by trade but have become one through necessity. I have a 98 accord EX v6 sedan in excellent shape with 220,000km and cannot afford a new car. Besides I like mine. In the last 2 years have cleaned egr valve, ports, manifold, replaced rotors/brakes, rear struts and most recently I dropped the rear axle and muffler system (cat back) to repair gas tank that started leaking. Btw, I do this all on my driveway with hand tools. About 2 years ago I had original timing belt replaced and left/right drive shaft at dealer. They replaced drive shafts because of boots. Around the same time I noticed a clunky/jolt sensation when gears would shift. This has been intermittent.Sometimes it seems off to rpm's. I thought it was maybe timing belt related or possibly leak in gas tank causing wrong air mix and throwing off readings but the problem still exists. I refuse to believe I have to replace the entire transmission and I'm hoping that maybe its something else I can do before resulting to such a drastic measure. At this stage there are no codes with my basic reader and no flashing drive light. I did do a transmission flush 2 times last year and will try doing that again but thought you might have some ideas before changing tranny oil. Maybe there is a filter I can access? I find the Honda dealers completely unhelpful other than saying dump the car. That just makes me more determined. Btw, they said that about the gas tank. Job done and code gone.Sorry for the long note but don't want to miss anything. Thanks, Michael

Well looks like mine may be something inside the transmission. Replaced the solenoids accessible from the top (the two separate assemblies) and still have the problem. Took it to a transmission place where the guy *seems* trustworthy, told him what I had done and that I hadn't touched the other solenoids (the barrel type ones) but wondered if he could check them.

    • @msimpsonnj
      @msimpsonnj 7 років тому

Hit send by accident. So he said he had diagnostic equipment he could use on it to see if the solenoids were opening and closing, check pressures, etc. So I left it with him and he called today and said that the solenoids are all operating but that the pressure (I guess the fluid pressure?) somewhere inside is lower than it should be. So he will take it apart and replace the innards with new parts for $2000......sigh.....

On my 2000 honda accord EX 2.3L, I've been having not just hard shifts but slipping between the gears when shifting. Have to anticipate when it's going to shift and back off on the throttle and let it shift to prevent it slipping. Does it the worst from 1st to 2nd, and then not as bad but still slips from 2nd to 3rd and more if I'm on the throttle more. I'vecjanged the fluid with Castrol import rated for honda with no difference or change to this problem. Replaced the B and C solenoids with brand new ones, no change at all, then replaced the lockup solenoid pack with a used one, and the linear solenoid pack with a used one and basically no change to this problem. Then I replaced both the linear solenoid pack and the lockup solenoid pack with brand new ones, and there was a change now after it shifts out of 1st gear it triggers the 4th gear indicator light to flash, and won't shift on it's own. And doesn't seem to shift back into 1st gear when shifting it manually. It seems to only have 2nd gear and will shift to 4th gear I think when you manually shift out of second. Seems to grab the next gear it shifts to a lot better and more solid without slipping. Seriously at my wits end with this peace of crap Honda. Seems like all the hype about honda cars is completly false from my experence. Sounds like these automatic transmission problems are the usual case with all of Honda's automatic transmission vehicles. I could really use some expert advice on how to solve this problem. The car drives great once it's in a gear and especially once it's in high 4th gear. No slipping once its has fully shifted into a gear, so I don't think the problem is that the transmission is wore out. I've had these two solenoid packs out and in about five times and have cleaned the screens on both the flutes and the rubber seal each time. They're clean as a whistle. Does any one know how to fix this problem with these? I've also replaced a couple of pressure sensors/switches. Would putting a big transmission cooler on it and an external screw on oil filter help it at all? Could hurt it anyway, I figure. Two things honda should have done in the first place in my opinion.

Great stuff, Flower Ma. I would clarify for less technical people that it's the "TCS" light, not the "PCS" light and that there are two different solenoids with two different resistance ratings, per the Acura service manual. One is the "Lock-up Control Solenoid Valve/Shift Control Solenoid Valve A Assembly" and the other is "A/T Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Valves A and B." The first is rated for 12-25 ohms and the second is rated for "About 5.0 ohms." The second is the "dual linear solenoid" shown in the video.

Great video. Appreciate your dedication to finding out these 'little' solutions to what would otherwise be either a several thousand dollar problem, or require getting rid of the vehicle.
    Question for you...
I was experiencing rough shifts and the infamous, yet seemingly unrelated, 'evaporating fuel line' issue a couple years ago. Eventually I was driving down the interstate and my transmission just broke, so I had it replaced. Interestingly, the transmission never slipped before the day it clunked, at which point it was barely able to drive the few miles to the repair shop. I had it repaired and it seemed much better, although not completely perfect.
Fast forward 2 years of limited driving, so maybe 10k miles...
I just started a new job that requires a much longer, 60 mile round-trip commute. Just recently I started experiencing rough 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd UP shifts. And as of yesterday I started getting really strong DOWN shifts when I come off the accelerator. It's basically the equivalent of coming to a near-emergency stop, nosedive and all.
I spoke with the guy that did the previous repair, and it seems he's thinking/hoping it's this solenoid issue you've highlighted in this video.
    Couple issues though...
First, it doesn't show a check engine light...just the SRS light that come on either yesterday or the day before. He seemed really surprised there was no CEL...he kept asking me 'are you sure?'
Second, you seemed to imply in the video that this solenoid issue was mostly/exclusively related to the up shifts, not down shifts.
I'll be taking it in for him to look at in a couple days, but I'd like to get a better handle on what the issue may be. The rebuilt tranny only has ~10k on it, and from what I recall they added an extra radiator/intercooler, and possibly upgraded the lines etc.
    Any initial thoughts?

Thanks for reaching out to me. I sure wish Honda had produced better transmissions from 98 99 to 04 05. You think a company with all the resources at their fingertips could have issues a computer software updates or other design change to help with the longevity.
The hard shift can happen both up or down. I have seen it mostly occur when going up. You need to ask the guy that rebuilt the trans if he just used the old solenoids or did he put new ones on. My guess is he used the old ones. Most guys / shops do. They are pretty expensive and would ass quite a cost to the end repair.
You can have codes even though the check light does not come on.
I have also seen grounding issues cause similar problems. Make sure the transmission is grounded well. Honda grounds seem to go bad after 10 years or so. With lots of corrosion.
I would change out that solenoid if the guy never did when he rebuilt the trans. Also ask him if he used a new torque convertor? Strange things happen when TC’s start to go bad
As far as the heat soak problem. You have to replace 3 sensors. I have a video on fixing the problem. Just search my channel for heat soak problem. If you can’t find it let me know and I’ll post a link.
Is the trans still under warranty? If it is, it’s the rebuilds responsibility to take care of it. I bet he gave you a 12/12 warranty. 12 months or 12,000 miles. With really cheap shops it’s more like 12 feet or 12 minutes whichever occurs first.
What part of the country are you in? I know a few great shops in So Cal that specialize in Honda Acura Transmissions. Green Transmission is such a shop, anyone reading this if you use him tell him BUNDY sent you.

@@bundysgarage +1 on Green Transmission. Kyu does a terrific job and their priced super reasonable. Where are the ground connections for the transmission?

Usually towards the firewall that where you will see the grounds for the trans. Also if you want you can always add your own. Just find a good spot on the trans and then a good ground on the body or frame.

My 01 TL is spitting out the P0740 and it came up as the torque converter clutch circuit open. Would this be a fix. I’m really wanting to keep this car. This is my first car and I fell in love with it and I don’t want to sell it. I also have a iacv code 0505 I think I know how to get rid of that. But would this fix or get rid of the code. When I’m driving it feels normal but sometimes when I let off the gas it’s load goes down and it sounds kinda funny. Like it has a cam in it. Would that be the iacv? I’m super confused and I’m not ready to let this car go. If anyone can help me this would be so appreciated

Hey there great video! Hey man I have 01 Acura tl and today while on the freeway my check engine light came on along with the TCS light, got to work opened and closed the gas cap at the end of work turned car on the check engine light was still on but TCS light was gone. Next day after work went to AutoZone got it obd2 and P0740 & P1298 came out.(print out said recommend replace transmission shift solenoid(s) & flush transmission fluid) My car doesn't hard shift or anything like that, it drives normal no jolting or slipping, It has 147k miles never done transmission flush before since I got it in 2008. On a side note while on freeway got cut off breaked and a water bottle hit the shifting stick into neutral- I didn't noticed, pressed on the gas once..twice as in trying to catch up w this mofo till I noticed, idk if this had anything to do w the codes just wanted to ask your opinion or anyone's on everything. Thanks.

I would do a 3 times ATF flush on the car.

BundysGarage pardon my ignorance sir but did you mean do an ATF flush 3 times? Back to back? Once a week or once a month? Thank you.

I would change it out about 100 miles on the car and then change the ATF again and then one more time, same mileage interval.

BundysGarage I actually drive exactly 100 miles every day to/from work, will give it a try. Thanks man!
