I can't even attempt to mentally calculate how Many Ole Smokies I've seen on porches at apartments etc( by the way, you're not "supposed" to have bbq grills on 2nd floor and above) these pits have been around since the 80's. If you want to spend $1000 on a Big Green Egg go for it. I love the simplicity of these pits Oh if you have $1000 for a pit , check out the custom pits from Gator Pits in Houston.
My sister just told me about this grill. I live in lower Michigan about 45 minutes northeast of Detroit and she moved south to Texas decades ago to the Houston area. She is a great cook and baker who’s my go to person whenever I’m making something new. She has an Old Smokey grill and told me she’s going to send me one. I had no idea what it was so I did some searching and found your video. It’s very informative and entertaining! I’m excited to use it when it warms up and I don’t even have it yet! Your video has given me everything I need to know to use it and use it properly. You did a great job. Keep it up and I’m going to check out any other videos you did. Thanks!
I purchased the 22" model. Did two racks of ribs and was I impressed. About 50 minutes and they were done. Great purchase. I have alot of Weber grills and a PK. I love them all for what they are. Glad I added this one to the family. I'll see how well it cooks in -0 degree weather.
lived in the Houston area for 35 years. Moved up here in North East Texas and no one has old smokeys!!!!!! Ordered one from Home Depot and will be here real soon. Can't wait!! Great product!!!!!!!!
Awesome review Big Lew! I love my old smokey, another big difference between the two is that it has personality. I didn’t know the grill grate would hang on the legs, so I learned something. Take care!
I ran across these online while searching for a charcoal grill for my apartment in New Hampshire. Also ran into your channel researching a little because I’ve never seen one up here so, thank you!
April Snappy You are welcome. These are ubiquitous in the Gulf South. However, they have always had somewhat regional distribution. Made in Houston, TX.
I bought a brand new 14 for $7 because it was missing a leg at a garage sale. I went straight to Academy right after and bought the longer legs for it! Grilling later on that day!
Hah....dollars to donuts, me pops use to say that, great memories. Yeah, and I remember when there were only 3-4 channels on the TV set, and as a kid i'd go outside, cause trouble down at the river, and as long as I was home by dinner, all was good. Oh well...Great post Big Lew, have a blessed Christmas:)
Gregor Miller yea, now days that a doughnut costs just about a dollar, I don’t reckon the expression means as much anymore. Now days there are more channels to watch than carter has liver pills!
Never heard of one before then seen them for sale in Walmart up here in pennsatucky aka Pennsylvania coal region for $60 22in figure I'd give it a shot it's USA made in Texas can't go wrong now I'm hooked installed a thermometer ordered the longer legs and a Weber side table for it we'll see if it works ..
Old Smokey’s are ubiquitous in the Gulf South. I grew up with them. You will love the 22”. Best grill in the under a hundred buck price range. Made in America too. It will cook as well as mast grills in a much higher price range. Thanks for watching. I have nearly 75 old Smokey videos on UA-cam.
Just got me a medium 18’ old Smokey on clearance at good ol wallyworld for 20$ and can’t wait to try it out. Thanks for the good info video, keep grillin 👍🏽👊🏽
You could review the phone book and it would be interesting Rob.....if they still make phone books!! LOL!! I think I'd love one of these 14" for small, quick meals. Thanks for putting this out there! Happy Holidays to you and the family bud!!
BBQ PIT DOG if I reviewed the phone book I would start with the unlisted numbers. Thanks for watching Rob. BTW I ordered some of that jerky you mentioned.
Bimp5 Thank you! I felt sort of bad for that poor open box grill all alone in that dusty old hometown hardware store. I knew I could get a replacement handle.
Unwrap A Smile Thank you. I’m not real serious about UA-cam. I’m just a fella having fun with food fire and a phone camera. So I appreciate you watching.
Joe Rockme my dad teared up, he is 74, it’s been 60 years since some one from LSU has won the Heisman. Burrow is only the second one from LSU too. Thanks Joe.
Hey buddy do you know what kind of I eternal temp the old smokey holds? And could you put charcoal on one side and do a half rack of ribs on one?...just found your channel I been smokin for 25 years . I'm gonna watch you from now on lol good job buddy!
Hillbilly I would suggest using an Old Smokey 22” grill for ribs. The 14 is a bit small but possibly it could do a half rack. I have done chicken on a can with it.
If you are referring to the Jumbo Joe Premium sold exclusively at Walmart. Then based on this review www.thespruceeats.com/weber-jumbo-joe-premium-22-334072 I would prefer the Old Smokey 22” in does a very good job with low & slow barbecue/ indirect cooking. So Ribs, pulled pork, even brisket be done on the OS 22”. It does a fantastic job with beer can chicken and turkey too. However if all you want to do is direct grill; steaks, burgers, chops and dogs. Then the the Weber Jumbo Joe Premium May be adequate for you. I prefer my Old Smokey 22” to most of my other grills for chicken. Walmarts in my area sell the Old Smokey 22” for about $63.
Joseph Bekin Thank you. If you travel with your old Smokey 22 a lot you may want to keep it with the stock issued short legs. That way it is great for taking camping, tailgating, picnicking etc. The short legs are also fine for back yard barbecue if you set it up on a table or bench or something. However, if you not plan to use it at home you may want to consider getting the long legs.
I was there today and brought home a 22 out of the box with a few scratches... the grill, the beer can chicken holder, and the long legs came out to 70 bucks
Got a 22" at the house, which I love - and the 14" new still in the box. Is the 18" almost as portable for tailgating, etc. or am I better off with the 14"? I wanna do small-scale smokin' too and still have the portability, and the 22" is a little much to lug around.
Thanks . I need something to smoke some meat for a recipe. Does anyone know if I can put my pork butt in a crock pot and transfer to this. I need the crock pot for the broth. Pork stock. Put I need a little of that smoke flavor to say mine apart from the competition. I one the meat to have a little of a smoke taste. Will this dry out my meat if I do it like this. Please help
If you're ever in the Bellville / Brenham area make a side trip to Bleiblerville and Hebert's Meat Market. Get their sausage. I gotta pay for them to ship it in dry ice to Georgia but Texans have no excuse. It's the best sausage I've ever had. Get some of their dried sausage too, trust me, that alone will be worth any drive. Ask for the head Bohunk in charge, he's an Aggie. Tell them a Huebner ("HEEB ner") sent you, they probably knew some. I got blood kin all over that area, some even still above ground. www.herbertscatering.com/aboutus.htm
This is a great a grill and well worth the price. I absolutely love my 14 Old Smokey.
Robert Williams your expert opinion is duly noted, as well as appreciated.
great grill
I grew up learning how to BBQ on an old smokey and it never let me down. This grill holds close to my heart!
Kurt G me too! Very close to my heart.
Made in Houston too. Started here in Pasadena/ la porte.

That sounds like a fantastic deal. With long legs on it you won’t need a table to set it on.
This is the best explanation of the internet out there 😂😂
Very thorough view. I neat little grill. I like them boudan. I watched the whole thing BTW. Lol
MeatCranium BBQ AND REVIEW Thanks MC.
I have 3 old smokey grills. they are really good grills. 2 big ones and 1 medium size.

hey buddy, enjoyed. I dont like the Weber - just too small and burns stuff up. I just bought the Smokey in hopes of more of a smoke than a grill
What a steal of a deal Big Lew!! Awesome review and those sausages look great!!
Still my favorite smoker .In my opinion nothing makes a better steak

Great video, Lew...thanks for posting. I did not even know these existed until now! I just went online and purchased the 14" Old Smokey.
I didn’t even know it existed either. Just found out today after researching.
I was thinking about getting a 14 inch but I wasn't sure if it would be big enough but after seeing your video I think it will be.
How many bricks of charcoal does it hold?
Old Smokey WINS!!!! :)
Oh man. I'm a Weber guy but I may have to get one of these little guys.

Heavy Metal Bar-B-Que Boudin is regular part of our Louisiana diet.
I like the way you talk. Got a good cadence to it
How much charcoal does it use? A whole chimney? On the #14 old smokey
I use a small Weber mini rapid fire chimney.

Old Smokey 22 or Weber kettle?
That depends on a number of factors. I use my Old Smokey more than my Weber.
I bought the old smokey t-shirt
18 inch old smokey does wonders should have got the 22 inch wasnt available
Just bought one. Put it together, and the top doesn't fit on the top. Just seats on on top of the bottom. Good wind and it's GONE! HELP!!!!
Sharon Wink Ormando The tip of the legs should keep it from sliding around. Yes the lid butts up to the bottom there is no overlap.
Thanks BL.
