  • I had a magical walk through the past in this fairytale German town.
My meditative videos show a calming and artistic view of the places I visit and the quiet, peaceful wanders I take through them. Medieval villages, picturesque cottages, beautiful cities. Relax and escape with me from the busy bustling world to my dreamy and serene slow living way of seeing my surroundings. Experience the magic of peering into the past and being in a fairytale, just for a little while.

Quedlinburg is a UNESCO World Heritage town.
Quedlinburg is in the part of Germany that used to be the DDR, the Deutsche Demokratisch Republik, the German Democratic Republic. This means, that before 1989, it was very difficult to visit this town, if you lived outside of the DDR. Now, you can just drive through and park in a particularly lovely car park - overlooked by the highest watchtower of Quedlinburg, the Lindenbeinscher Turm, that used to protect the town, but now makes you want to see more...

How did you know that I was in need to watch such nice, peaceful and fairytale video in the current times?
To be honest, I've been there a few times in the 80s, but I'm not usually that interested in history. Maybe it's also because you're used to such historical buildings and therefore it's nothing special anymore if you grew up in a city with similar buildings. But it's really fun to explore such gems through your eyes and even get some interesting background information that I didn't know or think about. By the way - when you were at Strietzel Essen, did you notice the pink blankets on the chairs? They're there for guests to wrap themselves in when the temperatures are cold so they don't freeze.

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  2 роки тому +1

Yes, I only look up so much background for the videos, I must be honest! But it’s a wonderful side effect of the channel, learning more about Germany! I’m loving it. I used to live opposite the Natural History Museum in London- can you believe, I only went in once, briefly? 😱 Weip es vor der Nase war….
Yes, the blankets were also great to sit on rather than cold iron that day lol 🥶
I‘m glad you liked it! It also took my mind off everything while I was there and while I was editing.

I'm lucky enough to be able to call Quedlinburg my ancestral home! It's where my family was from before they moved to a different part of Germany, just a few generations ago.
While researching the city for this video, did you stumble across the name "Dorothea Christiane Erxleben"?
She was the first woman who ever studied medicine in Germany, over a hundred years before another woman followed in her footsteps. She got express permission from the King, and it was a pretty big deal at the time.
She's a distant relative of mine - my family is descended from one of her brothers, and to this day, we still carry on her maiden name: Leporin.
Even her original family home still stands to this day! You can visit it, though it's not much to look at now. I think it was converted into a hotel a while ago, and that stopped operating too, so the inside is quite bland and impersonal now.
Still, it was quite surreal to trace the steps of my own ancestors in such a direct way!

@@LaureninGermany I am sure the videos will be great! I just recently read you have - besides welsh ancestors -, also irish ancestors. Because your videos may show unexpected things in germany, you may want to include some minutes about the celtic-irish high cross of Dietkirichen an der Lahn. It was builded in 1917 and remember the irish pow held there who died there and in other camps across germany. So in total 45 irish pow died during ww1 in all of germany, about 34 irish died in Dietkirchen alone, of more than 2000 iriish pow held in Diektirchen camp alone. Thats sad, but most survived which is good. At first i did not want to emntion it, because of the sad background and i dont think you had any ancestors held in Dietkirchen, but since your a partly irish, you may want to take a stepvisite when you are in Limburg an der Lahn. Today, no irish are buried there. All were reburried on larger cemtetries, but if i remember correct, in case of the irish, all irish deads were brought back to Ireland untill 1923. By the way all dead pows of the specific nations they belonged to, were brought back, except the russians, because the Sovietunion did not wanted the dead russian pows. Just the irish cross is still standing there with the names of the dead ones. It is one of the very few irish-celtic high crosses in continental europe and the only irish-celetic high cross in all of germany. The germans paied the irish pow a little income and from that income the irish spared some reichsmark to pay this irish-cletic highcross. It was restored in 2007 and the irishtimes, an online newspaper reported about that cross in 2007 and again in 2017. Some facts, copy and paste, lots to read now: The Dietkirchen school chronicle writes about the erection of the cross in 1917:
At Pentecost this year, the cemetery of the local prison camp received a magnificent decoration. The Irish prisoners who had been in the camp there in the previous year have donated a wonderful monument in strict Romanesque style in loving memory of their comrades buried there.
A huge cross rises on a mighty foundation. From the base of the cross it measures 3 m and is made of one piece. The width of the cross is 1.60 m, the thickness 0.50 m. It is executed in sandstone.
In the middle of the front you can see the image of the crucified one. At the upper end is the relief image of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. On the two arms of the cross there are two reliefs of saints.
The image of the Saviour has a powerful effect on the viewer. On the back you can see four Irish coats of arms: high above three crowns, in the middle the harp, on the left the eagle with the sword, on the right an outstretched hand.
All sculptures and reliefs are chiseled out of the stone.
On the back and on the base are the 34 names of the Irish prisoners resting there.
A highly symbolic relief bears the lower part of the cross on the back. The rising sun sends its rays, probably the hope of the Irish people. At a small chapel in the relief, a small cross stands upright, indicating the help of God, a small falling cross symbolises the deceptive hopes of this earth. The dog, as a symbol of vigilance, points to the future, - the Irish people want to be vigilant, awaiting the appropriate moment of liberation from long suffering.
The design of this work is by architect A. Meister in Bochum i. W. The execution was carried out by master stonemason Mr. Johann Klein from Münster i. W. The price is about 6000 m. One can equate 1 M (= 1 Reichsmark) with about 12 DM, based on hourly wages and prices at that time. 6,000 Reichsmark would thus be about 72,000 DM or a good 36,000 Euro. An inquiry of the journal with a master stone sculptor on the Lower Rhine showed that such a cross today could hardly be made for less than 80,000 Euro, the material alone would be more expensive than the complete cross 90 years ago. In 2004 the first action was therefore an Irish Folk Open Air concert, the proceeds of which were used to preserve and restore the cross. WHAT ALESE CAN BE SAID? The first to die, Frederick Reilly of the Cheshire Regiment, has a street in the village of Dietkirchen, Fredrick-Reilly-Strasse named after him.

Thank you Lauren, that was a outstanding and educating tour. I did not know that the former DDR had such a lovely town among others. We visited the DDR a few months after the wall came down, it seemed like the country was in need of major repair and rebuilding. I'm glad that some gems survived.
Also, we need to hurry up with smellevision technology.....the Kaffee und Kuchen segment made me yearn for a Mohnkuchen....some day. All the best, Peter.

The ensemble of the towns Quedlinburg, Wernigerode, Goslar and Einbeck are good examples of the north-german style of half-timbered houses. I was for cardiovascular rehab in Quedlinburg in May and visited the town quite often and did found a new sight every time. Best tip for a Restaurant in Quedlinburg: the "Münzenberger Klause". Fabulous every time.
Hope you enjoyed your stay. If you want to park for free, just join the parked cars on the street above the used parking place. But I think you got the watchtower name wrong: I call it "Star gazing tower" ("Sternkiekerturm" in German)
