Did you know that crossing fingers has a different meaning in Germany? It symbolizes to break a promise or oath. People, especially kids, do it behind their back when they tell you something like "I swear it is true" but is actually a lie or tell you something they wish that it doesn't come true. That's why it is kinda funny when you cross your fingers and tell your mom to hope to find the cream puffs for her - a German understands this as the exact opposite.

Yes... although I DO love Marburg in Hesse. OK its bigger and a lot of students, but it has a charm that is so special you can almost touch it!?! If you have time to visit, please do. Your daughter might go to University there... in a few(!) years time. It's home to the worlds first Protestant (as in non-Catholic) University. The Duke of Hesse sheltered Luther in town, as well as Zwingly, so it has LOADS of Reformation history too.

It's such a beautiful, picturesque town that it would be hard to imagine that it had been part of East Germany from 1949 to 1990 when that country fell and Germany was reunited! I imagine there was a lot more to see (and EAT) than there would have been during those times! Great that you all had such fun there with three generations!

Well, I'm glad the last 31 years have helped it regain its . ..mojo!

@4:26 at the left: the not very impressive house with the vertical beams was supposingly the oldest surviving halftimbered house of all of Germany from the 1300s - until 2003 when they discovered beams in another house in Quedlinburg, which were dated from the 1200's.

Next to Quedlinburg and Wenigerode there also is Halberstadt. The town has seen more damage during WW2, and so there are less cute timber houses to explore, but what it does have is an absolutely stunning cathedral. So while a one year old toddler may not be quite up for that, if other viewers travel on their own, allow for the one hour tour that gets you proper access. It starts quite simply in the back through the cloister, if I remember right. But once you get to step into this cathedral you will know why you are here. Very much worth it. Best gothic cathedral that Germany has to offer, imo. Maybe, some other day.

Quedlinburg is really stunning! Especially when you know its recent history. I came to Quedlinburg for the first time in May 1990, shortly after the fall of the wall in Berlin. All the half-timbered houses looked as if they would collaps any moment. Reunification came just in time for the town to rescue the century-old houses. When I came to Quedlinburg for the second time in 2007 nothing of that decay was visible any more. Just incredible!

Hi all, the list of german cities with Fachwerkhäuser=tudor style houses listed by mama google are: Quedlinburg, Celle, Fritzlar, Monschau(seems my favourite) Bernkastel-Kues, Esslingen, Tübingen, Rothenburg o.T., Bamberg. Some of them you already visited and may be worth for a short stop on your next tours. Willa is alive :-D yes, she is a kid and talks a lot. Seems she has made a very good bond to her grand ma, so keep an eye on her when your parents leave and Willa will stay with you. :-D Risa, btw, do your parents already understand that you like to stay in Germany cos you are so close to other countries, cultures, languages, history, different kind of food and so many things to discover. Hope they liked to see so much even it comes along with so much "easy" travelling. Enjoy and good luck for your next destination.

Why isn't anybody in the street? When I stayed in Quedlinburg the place was crowded!
Quedlinburg is great and I am grateful that all those medieval houses could be saved which must have cost billions - after GDR had left the old houses to rot because they wanted people to move into the "Plattenbau". Those houses looked just terrifying after the end of GDR - and still people were living in them. But what a beauty they are now!

To me Wernigerode, the old town looks a bit more homogeneous and therefore the overall impression is a bit more pretty. So, one should know that not all half timbered houses in Wernigerode are that old, often just from the 1800s. In Quendlinburg, on the other hand, single houses could be much older and when you are into architectural and construction details they could be more interesting.

Quedlinburg was probably largely spared from WW2. In the 1970s there was no money in the East for modern buildings and no money to cut a wide road through the middle of the city. Until the end of 1980 it was just patching up in the East and hoping for better times. When better times began in 1990, the old building structure was worth preserving. But it still took a lot of investment to make houses look nicer on the outside than they ever were and to build in modern comforts on the inside.
So the motto of the GDR still came true: "risen from ruins and facing the future..."
Note, in the German Democratic Republic that was the text of the national anthem was last kept secret because nobody believed in it anymore. But with the Federal Republic of Germany it became possible.
Just not under socialism and planned economy but with democracy and social market economy.

    • @helloweener2007
      @helloweener2007 2 роки тому +1

"text of the national anthem was last kept secret because nobody believed in it anymore"
Actually the GDR stopped using the text because of the line: "Deutschland, einig Vaterland".
Johannes R. Becher wrote it for Germany as a whole.

JFTR, if you ever visit a (touristy) city AKA "Hotspot" like Quedlinburg, check out the opening times of the restaurant’s/museums/etc. beforehand. In QLB most of these are closed on Monday AND Tuesday, bc they are open on Saturday and Sunday instead. Another thing, at the weekend, booking a table in your favorite restaurant in advance makes sense, we've seen several people meandering from restaurant to restaurant only to get rejected by default. Well, you might end up with a Chinese Take Away (03:17) as your last resort.

Have your parents already get surprised by the Spaghetti Eis? I guess the surprise won't happen because the beans were spilled on earlier YT-videos.

These are beautiful medieval cities. They have literally been planned to look like a city and not some houses in the landscape. They made bent streets with one house next to the other so that when you are at least a bit near the center, you don't see out into the open land, you see only the city, only houses - and a center place, a town square.
I've read this some time ago. Before reading this I never thought of this. I just thought that the cities just came to be with one house after the other, but no, they planned them. It's a bit crazy, but it works, the bent streets with one building next to the other really make the medieval cities to be enclosed cities, where you only see the city houses and not the open landscape in the distance. These are not 5 houses on a field, I'm still smiling at this idea...
But of course, a handful of houses in the open landscape have their own appeal to them...
And of course, you are a cute family, enjoy it, enjoy your family and everything!

Germany had before 1871 never a capital city. Certain cities had specific "tasks". But the kingdom/empire was basically ruled from the cities the king/emperor preferred.
And in the case of King Henry the Fowler (876 - 936) this was in first place Quedlinburg. He is also buried in Quedlinburg. He obtained the epithet "the Fowler" because he was allegedly fixing his birding nets in Quedlinburg when messengers arrived to inform him that he was elected to be king. Albeit this might be a legend. At least he was known to be an avid hunter. But also tells that the expectation that the ruler of the country should be a modest person is deeply rooted in German history.
Henry the Fowler established the Ottonian Dynasty which ruled Germany from 916 till 1024 from this area (that's also why Goslar, Wernigerode, Halberstadt and Magdeburg were important). His son Otto I became the first Holy Roman Emperor.

Kinda coincidence as I've left Quedlinburg only a day ago for a trip to the "Spreewald"-region, another "must see" only 3.5 hrs away from QLB (that btw, this year has its 1100yr anniversary, so many events are in its pipeline). So you haven't had a Baumkuchen at the Market place?

Don't you let your in laws leave without making a video about their impressions, thoughts and culture shocks! 🤪

Oh, great memories, we was there in 2017 and our Nikolas was already 4 months old...every shop was closed, but this city is so cute and heartwarming, so it was a good time. But, the buggy on this streets is absolutly useless:-)

Windbeutel.. No other dish as a bigger gap between the "taste" and "eat comfort" ratio

Thinking that this beauty was sooo close to being rotten beyond repair. There are a lot of stories about how, when the wall came down in 1989, building materials were sent from West Germany in large amounts on short-term notice to save this architectural heritage.
