Absolute legend Dan - Mrs was complaining all evening yesterday when I got back from work at 7pm as she wanted to take the chill off the house and the CH was not working. Called our plumber this morning and he was off on his leave (fair enough) but said to Google you - all fixed and working again via this and Mrs happy - happy wife - happy life!!!! Cheers mate - lets hope it kicks in tomorrow morning! 🙂
You sir are an absolute legend, bless you! Coming into winter, a five year old and a 10 month old baby and the council don't have after hours apparently. All sorted thanks to you 👍🏼
Fixed my issue, thanks! Pump was running, but there may have been an air lock or debris because now all 3 zones work. Lots of spitting of air before flow began. I unscrewed it each time I turned on a zone, same each time. Much appreciated!
Worked a treat! Pump had been inactive for 6 months & jammed. Working perfectly now in the chilly climate of north of England (bring on global warming I say!). Thx. 👍
Another extremely thankful person here! We had cold water for 2 days. Our boiler wasn’t pumping water, kept getting f.22 error even when the pressure gauge was at 1.5. I just did this to the pump inside the boiler and voila! Hot water in our taps again! Told my husband I wanted to kiss you, he wants to kiss you too 😂😂😂😂. THANK YOU!🎉
Thanks so much for posting this trick! We came back from vacation and found no heat in the house. Then I started searching the web and found your video. I did not even had to go any further than just unscrewing the first screw. After I started turning it off, just less than a half turn, the pump started working. My pump is Armstrong, Astro 23CI. You saved me a lot of money! Happy New Year and best wishes to you and your family!
At 2.28 Dan says because it can turn - the electics are burnt out. But turning it can free deposits and gunge. So reconnect power and it works ! Great positive explanation nevertheless !
Thanks for the video. I had flushed my hot water tank and the pump was locked up due to air in the line. I opened the top cap 5-6 times to vent off the air and everything works as expected!
Water Pressure!: Thank you Dan, my pump is integrated within the combi boiler. My first (and only!) suspician was the pump, which was confirmed by your excellant video. So I checked it to make sure that it was, as you suggested, not jammed by summer inactivity. After a while of fiddling with the pump and it not starting up and it appeared to be free, my thoughts, confirmed by yours, indicated that a replacement pump was needed. What a pity, but there you are! At which point, my eyes inadvertantly strayed onto the boilers water pressure guage where I noticed the pressure was very low. Doh! I topped the system up and the pump sprung into life. Ach, I should have checked that first! I hope this helps others!
So you can basically keep the water supply to the system (including the pump) and also power to the system on and can unscrew it, right? Thanks a lot btw!😊
Thanks for the video, really good. When I undo the big brass screw on mine I have what looks like a square fitting in there and can’t use a screwdriver. Any ideas what tool I need to use please?
How do you unscrew the big screw. Seems tight. Tried using a screw driver bu my screw driver is too small. Tried using pliers and a coin but it bent the coin.
@@PlumbingGy I filed a gap in a flathead to make a "snake eye" profile and managed to apply enough torque to break the screw head, still seized though 😂 Thanks for prompt reply!
I had one that wouldn't run but was free and, from a check of the winding resistance, still OK from that point of view. What had failed was the capacitor (2uF, the value of the capacitor in the case of the pump you have there is printed on the label). I located a suitable replacement (it has to be a 450vac type often simply called a motor run capacitor) and fitted it (a fairly easy job) and its been back in service for many years. Way cheaper than a new pump.
hi, see those valves either side of the pump, mine are leaking at their big joints connecting onto the pump, tried to tighten although leaking more, wondering how to fix issue.. thank you
@@PlumbingGy Thanks a million for your speedy reply. Maybe I was confusing with my question. So basically, I usually do something like your video, when there is an airlock, where I only have to loosen the screw a little until it bleeds out the lock. This time as I haven’t used it for several months during summer, I’m guessing might just be a little stuck, but when I open the screw completely the water keeps pouring out. I thought maybe if I tightened the valve immediately above and below the pump it would stop the water for me to remove the screw and turn the impeller a little?
Your videos are so helpful thank you! But could the pump be faulty even if some of the rads get hot + hot water cylinder but all other rads furthest from pump are all cold?
@@PlumbingGy thank you for following up!! Yes there is a 2 port diverter valve next to the pump which diverts water between central heating and hot water cylinder
Hi Peter, do you mean out of the bleed screw on the front if off? If so it's meant to so just tighten it back on if it's weeping you may need to replace a seal. It's from the side of the pump you may need an engineer to take a look an potentially replacing it
@@PlumbingGy hi Dan thanks for quick reply water is trickling out of vent screw when you take off but doesn't seem to stop I just thought a little water would come out and then stop but mine didn't stop trickling out
Hi Peter no it's meant to trickle out when the vent is off as long as it stops and seals when the screw is replaced you are ok 👌🏻. The vent screw is removed to release any air when the air has purged water will begin to trickle out when this happens replace the screw and reseal.
I have tried doing this but aborted mission as there was alot of water coming out the pump even before i took the screw fully out. Is this normal or do I need to turn the water supply to the pump off first?
Hi there, the pump shouldn’t be spraying out with force normally a small trickle of water to say that it has been bled from the bleed screw. If you are experiencing a lot of water I would suggest it needs replacing.
I have done this before to unfree pumps. Sometimes even tapping a pump with a mallet or handle of a mallet works (don't hit it with a hammer!). Unfortunately I can't do it this time because the plumbers have faced the pump inwards towards the boiler. I suspect the start/run capacitor may be at fault though. Anyway a useful video. 👍

Turned my heating on for the first time this winter today. The timer for both water and heating showed both switching off at the set time but the pump continued running. I presume the valve is stuck in the pump. Is it a case of having the pump changed again or is there something I can do before calling someone out? It seems to happen every couple of years, despite having the systems flushed.

Hi Dan, As I'm unscrewing there is a lot more than a dribble coming out and it has a bit of pressure behind it too. So I've stopped and hopefully you can advise what to do now? Should i isolate the system?
There should not be a build up of pressure, I would advise let an expert take a look as the pump may need replacing, or go ahead and isolate the pump valves and replace it yourself 👍🏻

Doesn't look great, if you can hear air running through that could be a cause but Normally u can tell if it's burnt out by how quickly it gets hot. If it gets red hot in a small amount of time chances are it's gone
@@PlumbingGy bullocks 😟 Thats what I thought to, was very hot to touch. Anyway, cheers for your help, very good video and I felt confident to give it a go. Subscribed 👍

The additional burning sounds backs this up to be honest, Just give the installer a call to return as u suspect the motor, when he gets there make sure its not just air running through the pump and creating an air lock. hope this helps
I turned Central heating off, then removed screw, water continuously came out slowly but enough to soak the rag.
