im RACHEL BORN 1970 MY DAD BOUGHT THIS ON 45 RPM VINYL WHEN.I.WAS BORN AND I STILL HAVE THIS RECORD AS MY PRIDE AND JOY
As a boy in primary school in a small rural school ,the Vietnam War was constantly on the tele, papers etc.
some boys from our town were over there...Our teacher Mr Flanagan suggested we write to some of the diggers doing their duty....to our delight as kids several troopers wrote back thanking us for our support....we wrote for many months...and some lads visited our little school after their tours....I have held a lifelong respect for our ADF who with honour serve and protect our nation and values....this is not being jingoistic...but merely a memory from a then 12 yo kid
I loved your comment
One of Australia's finest singers. I miss those great years.
Thank God for youtube.......😍
Today is 25th April 2024. We don't forget.
This song is dedicated to Nurses. They are true hero's - we call our sport stars hero - they are not - Nurses / Police and firefighters and doctors are Hero's
WELL SAID!! I agree bravo!!! Biggest thanks CJ xxx Australia 🇦🇺 STRAYA SOUTHERN Cross ➕ Southern HEMISPHERE
There is a pretty good argument now for deleting police from your heros list. All else agreed.
I agree except for many police today are not the good guys but only enforcers for the elite.
This song reminds me of so many things. It is beautiful, powerful and sad. A masterpiece. Thank you Russell.
Very under rated song and artist. One of his best performances.
29-july-2022, saw Russell M in Burnie Tas, 73 odd yo, and holds a Great tune , well over 2 hrs non stop. Classic artist & band.
@@russclifton2026 I remember talking to him after seeing him here in Perth a few years ago now. I was amazed at how powerful his voice is and his range hasn't faltered one bit. He said it just seemed to get stronger the older he got.
Something about Russell's voice hits me so viscerally, just hits me right in the feels 😢
My grandfather was badly injured fighting in Ypres his brother died six months after being wounded by 7 bullets from a Turkish shell on Gallipoli. Last year I received an email in NZ from the UK asking if I was related to Uncle Wally.
A gentleman had picked up a ww1 photo album in an opshop. It had belonged to Uncle Wallys nurse at Walton on Thames.
Having been hospitalized many times, nurses have my respect, admiration and love as no other profession or people.
Thank you for sharing your experience, context and insight. Caroline xxx Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
There were some wonderful TV series about the Nurses, I can't remember the names. Aussie top quality productions. Grrr I don't recall name, fabulous performances... long time since I've had a 📺.
I lived those years when Russell put this song out ...My neighbors Husband had died in Nam ...His sister sang this song at his funeral ......one of the saddest time of my life.
What a powerful song and Russell, your voice is AMAZING. I've listened to 'Rachel' since I was babysitting at 13 years old. I'm 65 now and still I listen to this beautiful song.
I'm hearing you. Me too
@carmenbramich4255 great song
Likewise and I’m a 69 year old
Still listening in 2024
One of his best. One of Australia’s most underrated singer songwriters. 💕
Russell is a New Zealander
And here we are in 2023, with these words so apt after 7.10.23..
He was very young and handsome 😊🎤🎶❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥👏🤪
Vietnam- what a tragedy. I was 16 when this song came out. Stirred me then and still does. And the world still hasn't changed.
Where in the moment of change for the better 📦 moment... well, me thinks. CJ x Melbourne

A true Aussie legend 😊
If there was an Anthem to inspire nurses to keep going, You made it! Be proud. It may have been Vietnam then and Codvid now. The picture's different but the days are so similar. Nursed for 44 years now. When a bit flat get recharged from a welcome home. How did you have such insight and generosity when such a young artist?
Beautiful work Russell. Your capacity for compassion and love is obvious. I have three beautiful brothers. You are my favourite fourth.
Loved him then and to this day continue listening to him. Congratulations to you for your great work nursing over the years.
Nurses eat their own. Nurses treat each other like shit. Speaking as someone who's been there and done that. If your a patient advocate they will get rid of you anyway they can.
Some do. Some don't. Politicians and their managers treat us like shit. Our poor wages cost. Some few managers are fantastic. Anyway, have always been and will advocate for patients and families. Have been on several crosses and wanted to give up many times. Regardless, the good people keep us going. Nurses don't eat their own. Budgets chew us up. The job is about comfort for people. No awards, cash or trophies in this job. but some great memories. This song is how it is.

I remember this beautiful song as a 12 year old. My younger brother (as he recently revealed to me) was terrified at the time that I would be called up as part of the television/government conscription lottery/orgy that was part of our lives in 1969. Ronnie Burn's "Smiley" gave a sadder Vietnam war tinge to the classic Australian movie icon. Less commonly known is Matt Taylor's song "Tweetie", about a childhood friend called up to serve, and then die in Vietnam. Matt was the key vocalist in Aussie blues band Chain. As a solo act, and as support act to Jethro Tull, he performed this song at the Sydney Opera House in 1973. His pain was most evident to us in the audience; though his mighty blues voice never wavered and was the most fitting tribute to his lost childhood friend.
This was the song my grandad sung to my mum when she was little. She's called Rachel. Unfortunately he died by smoking when she was young. No wonder tears were pouring down her eyes when she found this song. They played this when he died. They kept him that night and all of his children cuddled up with him, playing all the songs of their memories. Now I play this for my mum every fathers day... She says thank you and starts crying. She misses him deeply and she had a really good connection with him. I never met him neither did my dad but I think he would have been a nice man. This song is one of the biggest connections my mum and grandad have. I think this song is very beautiful and I love it.
Fayke that is beautiful story brought tears to my eyes, music is so magical how it evokes memories
Rizoku suicide is not the same somehow
@@green-eyedkiwi we were raised on these amazing songs from the 60's and 70's. Magical times...brings back so many memories...
I was about 19 years old and on a Friday night we travelled from Liverpool to Bexley North hotel to see this great Australian legend perform, I'm 64 now and remember like it was yesterday 😊

Loved this and lots of other tracks Russell recorded. Loved this one since I was a kid. It still has an emotional impact on me in my 60s. I seem to remember that Russell didn't like the track but it's an Australian classic. He's a national treasure.
He, sure is, A NATIONAL TREASURE... how come he never became huge internationally? Or was he and I didn't realise.
I've seen him perform many times over the years... Such an accomplished, polished and down to earth Performer. A very humble soul. He must be empathic... loads of people say they feel like it's a big , comforting hug, to have been in his presence.... I concur with that view.
Probably the best singer/ song writer Aussie has produced.
A powerful Anti war song from the Vietnam era, from the point of view of one of God's Angels on Earth. There were then, and still today too many Rachels who sit and hold the hands of young men and women dying from war. They become whoever the dying soldier needs them to be at that time, as they comfort them and tell them they are not alone. God Bless you Rachel.
Why does this god of yours allow war, especially wars fought in his own name?
@@Rob-fc9wg The argument is God has given man free will. Evil men will use God's name to do all sorts of evil - wars in the "name of God", pedo priests, American televangelists ripping off the vulnerable. When we see what Put1n and his entourage of vodka guzzling barbarians are doing in Ukraine, they are not worthy of being called humans. In them you can see the deeds of Satan. In nurses like Rachel in this song, there is the work of God.
@@Rob-fc9wg Because God has allowed mankind to rule himself without direction, and as expected, hasn't worked out that well for "man" himself!.
@@brianlove8413
If I was a god, I most certainly would not allow wars in my name.
That makes me more moral than your imaginary friend.
@@brianlove8413 what is your solution to this problem then
Russel is such a great talent to this day 👌🇦🇺
Makes ya cry... for Rachel who has to cope with war memories, and her family, who are so grateful to get her back 😪
You cannot improve this, brilliant, sad , just a classic
Russell Morris; what a legend and this song is very moving. I was 13 years old when you released this song which should have been number 1. In my heart it was and always will be.
One of the very best songs of all time, very tiuching and so close to home
Russell was the 70’s , my best friend wanted to go to Perth ( where he lived) to have his baby... we loved him, glad he is still around💕
This song has the haunting line in the middle where Russell Morris sings these words, . . . .
“My dear family, . . . “
“The world and people in it, go the way they will, and there’s not a man black or white who can ever hope to stop them.”
Never tire hearing this fabulous song.
me either, chokes me up every time.
Under rated singer, love his work, songs and great voice.
Brilliant performer and a great protest song. Those were great years for Australian Rock. All heil Russell Morris!

thank you for this beautiful song Russell
I thank him too. A brother lost recently to the effects of Agent Orange in Vietnam. This song makes me cry every time I continue to play Russell Morris from his earlier days.
This is timeless. Today it also applies to New Zealand's terrible maternal mental illness and lack of government support.
I wonder when I am going to be able to go home?
Such a beautiful and sad song. Huge emotion.
A classic track to hear in 2024
Russell is a National Treasure. Simple as that.
My all time favourite Russell Morris song.

what a perfect song for Anzac Day
Thought that this was a great song when I first heard it in 1970 when I lived in Brisbane. Only found out last year that it was written By Raymond Froggatt, an performer I saw many times in the early 1970's back here in the UK; saw him again last year in my home town, he lives less than 20 miles from me.
One of our best of all time, talented song writer and singer, he had so many great songs!! Thanks Russell!!
Wow 🤩 each to their own, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, trash or treasure🤷♂️
Lyrics
Gather round on ma's knee,
To read this weeks letter.
I wonder what will be,
We hope the news is better.
The men here die like flies ma,
I bandaged their blinded eyes ma,
And the kids with their aching feet
Aint got nothing to eat ma.
The hospital has no door dad,
Soldiers lie on the floor dad,
Oh I did my best,
But I cant take anymore dad
Rachel's Coming Home
Rachel's coming home
Oh and i don't think She'll go away a gain
Rachel's seen the light
World too big to fight
And I don't think she'll go away again
My dear family
The world and people in it
Go the way they will
But there is not a man
Black or White
Who can never hope
To stop them

Beautiful song.
Like many other commentators herein I keep coming back to this song that had an immediate impact on me when it was first released, I think it's the theme and most of all Russell's delivery with a somewhat haunting melody line. It's not hard to play on the guitar but singing it is something else! I love the orchestration, drumming etc.
