What a GREAT video. Doing research for a new project. You are helping a lot.
❤❤❤ You blew my mind today. Haha. You 1st caught my eye because of your beautiful ranch paintings. /You are a very talented man. I grew up in the horse world also.
I'm a retired veteran in Texas, livingthedream. I am looking forward to learning how paint my favorite horse and dog.
Thank you for this opportunity. ~hj~
Thanks so much! Lots more horses and dogs coming. Working on one today as a matter fo fact. 😀
This is very helpful! Would love to see more techniques. You are my favorite instructor. Thanks!
Awesome, thank you! Lots more coming!
Someone on another video commented on this video so I brought your video up and boy am I glad I did! Like you I was an oil painter many years ago and when I switched to acrylics I very badly wanted them to behave like oils. I got pretty close by painting very quickly and learning how to blend them, but it wasn't the same.
I bought slow dry mediums, but they didn't seem to make much of a difference. I realized watching this video that I had bought a jar of open medium that you showed here so I will definitely dig it out a put it to use. THANK YOU for the info in this video!!!!
What a clear, easy-to-understand video about the acrylics and media and the "why" behind different methods. Makes it a lot more enjoyable when using them, knowing what is behind the different things we do with our paint! I love Heritage because it is so trustworthy, and have progressed a long way to replace my former brands. Acrylics have a bad reputation among some oil painters, because they don't understand about the really good ones. I like to oil paint, but I will always go back to Heritage, because of its limitless possibilities, plus the advantage, of course, of faster drying (if desired!)
You are so right. Acrylics have come a long way. Most host store paints now are acrylic. Exterrior acrylic coating last longer than oils. Oils will always be a favorite because of their history, but new generation acrylics don't have the problems of yellowing over times like the oils do. There are advantages to both. I love acrylics!
Thank you for such detailed education !!!! ❤
Thank you so much for a wonderfully informative video. You've made it so easy to understand.
Glad it was helpful!
Hello, David. This is some masterful teaching, my friend. You never disappoint. For me, keeping the JansenArt acrylics in the little containers with lids and globalizing them with Extender Medium seems to be best as I'm learning (because I'm still sooooo slow -- hahahaha). I transfer the paint I need to a 12 x 16 disposable palette with the painting knife. Adding the extender and/or open medium (and sometimes a little spritz of water) gives me all the time I need to work on a rose painting. This system you've designed is nothing short of genius -- incredibly flexible -- which is exactly what you demonstrate in this video. One more thing -- I have to say I smiled when you talked about the drying times of the various pigments. When I first put the paints into those little containers -- I started calling them names -- for instance, "Naughty Hansa" -- because she tightened up so quickly -- just wouldn't stay nice like the others. (She just needed more extender than the others.) And Phthalo Blue is always a "Good Boy" because he never gives me any trouble. It sounds silly, but I talk to my paints like kids when I stir them. We depend on the paints so much, it gets personal. I've found that maintaining them properly in their little pots is an important part of the process. Enough blathering for today. Keep getting better. Best regards, JV
Thanks so much. Yes many still like the global way of painting. It does work really well and I love the Naughty Hansa...LOL. Awesome!
Thank you David a very concise explanation on your paints.
Very welcome Lesley. Hopefully it makes it easier to understand our acrylics.
Enjoy your teaching. I have learned so much from all your explanations. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
David, as always, love your paints and teaching lessons! I’ve practiced many if not all your techniques and discovered that they are all my favorites! Thank you for the continued lessons .
Very welcome. Thank you Kathleen.
This is such a great video Mr. Jansen to learn about creating consistency of paint. Will certainly refer to this video again as I keep learning. Thank you, so much!
Thanks,a very informative tutorial!
Glad you enjoyed it! It does have a lot of information. Especially towards the end when you see the techniques I use. Thanks!
Excellent episode David, one that I will come back to several times and continue to learn from. Living in Arizona, painting with acrylics and even watercolor is a challenge. I’ve gleaned many points from your various programs that have helped significantly. It’s nice to have this post with it all info in one place to refer to. Thanks, and hope you are feeling better.
I am so thankful for your explanation for these type of products- understanding how they work and interact with one another is absolutely key to having an amazing piece of work.. you are a wonderful teacher and I am thankful that you share so much with us out here who are trying to learn more about what we are dealing with- I love to paint and learn more about it- God bless you and your family family! For taking the time to help us! Your paintings are beautiful and inspiring- there’s so much to learn
Yes more videos on techniques softening edges etc. Great video David, please keep them coming 🍁👍
I Love the way you explain everything with the paint, please do more on the technique and all of it. Very educational and I have learned a lot from the difference of mediums. Thank you
Thank you for this explainer-video! You have just made a lot of sense to a whole lot of questions I had... even though watercolours are my main jam. 😃
Perfect! Just what I wanted know💕
Thank you!
You are such a great teacher.
If you excuse the pun, I was glued to the screen! So crucial to understand what you are working with I always notice how buttery your paint is when it hits your canvas. I like to work with thick paint, and also follow your methods of thinning the darks then working the thick on top thanks so much
Bloody Brilliant Dave.
Thank you for the explanation it was very helpful and I would definitely appreciate more instructional videos.
I would love seeing more in the use and techniques of your paints
Thank you so much for the lesson and i love the heritage paints so much
You are so welcome! Thank you Phoebe. More coming in the future. New techniques!!
I absolutely am in awe of the way you paint, I watch and rewatch as you make it easy to understand although it takes a while for me to absorb, I want to be a good painter but how do I get the confidence and find the bravery to just put my paint down. I love the way you capture essence and movement in each painting
This is an amazing video, so informative and helpful. Thank you
I bought the open medium and now know what it is and how to use it. Love the explanation of the components in the paint! Thank you!
Wow unbelievably amazing ✨ thankyou 👍👍
Learned a lot, thank you.
Very informative and helpful. Will share.
Please do!
Enjoy the teaching!
Wish I had college professors who could teach like you!
Thank you. I do love to teach.
Isn't that the truth! David, you are a very gifted teacher!!! We are all so blessed that you bring your incredible talents to us🥰
Yes, you are totally right, David, understanding the different possibility of the mediums and the solvent gives a free handling with this concept of Heritage MultiMedia Acrylics. This is a great Video for getting to know how to work with the different mediums !!!! So many thanks for teaching this way, it's really an importent basic help for anything else!!!!!!🥰👏 Another small question: is the Heritage Acrylic completely free of consevatives?
Thank you Renate. Yes. It is a green products that is safe for the environment as well.
Love your teaching technique, so easy to understand. Would love to hear your thoughts on surfaces to paint on .. what is your favor and why .. how you decide which to use (canvas vs wood)
Excellent explanation of how the acrylic paints work. This is the kind of thing I love learning about. I tried mixing the "global" paints when I first started with Heritage paints a couple of years ago. I liked the result but I found I don't have the patience to make the mixtures. Your demonstration of all the options is very helpful. I was toying with the idea of getting some of the thickener but have hesitated because I had no clue how to use it. Now I do and want to give the "extender/thickener" gel a try. Can you recommend proportions when mixing a larger amount? In reality though, I've become a big fan of Heritage paints and, more and more, enjoy the "acrylic" method as you say you do. Your paints were my first step into professional grade acrylic paints and I'm hooked! Thank you David for your always informative and entertaining videos!
It takes very very little thickner and a lot of mixing. The thickener continues to work for several minutes as you mix. Start with just a drop and mix, then add more if needed. If you get too much, add more extender or paint. Start small until you learn how much to used.
Really enjoyed your explanation on acrylics. I had started out tole painting decorative arts . Have since gotten way from craft painting and do fine art of the old masters in oil , pastel
Have been thinking of getting my Golden open acrylics.. out from a few years slumber. How are your acrylics Matt or glossy I find some different acrylics are not same in sheen .. I like to see the color range not shift
I was hoping you would address that . Maybe next time . I personally vote for strokes & blending helpful hints are always needed . Great video.
Thank you.
You are a wonderful teacher! I have yet to see a teacher so clear and transparent in sharing all the tricks and methods to make art a beautiful easy. Where do I find the open medium ?
Excelente e muito boa a explicação nesse video sobre como usar a água e o extensor pra diminuir ou aumentar o tempo de secagem dos acrílicos. Gostei bastante. ❤
I would love to see more videos of techniques! I’m always trying to paint fast bc I have little ones who don’t give me a lot of time to go slowly. I have the different mediums to work with, but I’m always asking myself if it’s worth slowing the dry time. If you do a technique video can you please explain why you are choosing to use the open medium vs solvent technique in a given situation?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dear Mr. Jansen..what paint brush do you recommend to do roses with? I have your paints the acrylic ❤
?? Question- I found ur channel and love your knowledge, detailed instructions/information about the whys and wherefores of your techniques-I recently switched to painting in oils so my question is, is it unreasonable or unrealistic to follow you when u mostly work in acrylics?
💞💯🎨🎨🎨
Thanks!
@@JansenArtEducation YOU are very very welcome David 🙏🙏😊
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏
Thanks!
Does this change the color after drying ?
No, it all dried clear.
Hello David, could you please help me with a painting, I am really battling.
I've been painting for a little over a year. In my beginners' excitement , I purchased a lot of Liquitex acrylic paint. I wish I had paused long enough to research the importance of quality paint. I'm too frugal to throw it away, but will eventually replace it with your brand.
Thank you Anna. Liquitex works better with 1/2 tone techniques. That is about it. Many of my students had trouble doing what I do with it. It is a good paint though. They are a good company.
What are 1/2 tones compared to tonal painting?
