I think egg tempera is one of the most under-appreciated mediums. Your method is the best and easiest I have seen. Thanks! BTW, I sometimes paint egg tempera on tempera ground. I basically prepare the wood with glue size, then scumble a thin layer of egg tempera white (egg plus pigment which is actually a mix of titanium and marble dust). Let it dry for a while then paint my painting over this.

Please be careful with dry pigment powder, especially cadmium and heavy metals. Wear mask and work in ventilated area when you use powered pigments.

Thank you for the video. My hesitation with egg tempera is that I find it wasteful. At the end it feels wrong to throw away my pigment and egg yolk mixes. Any recommendations? I guess I just have to really plan and make very small mixes so I don't have a lot leftover. It may be difficult since what I would like to achieve is realism. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to share your knowledge.

It looks like if you only make the mixes as you go, dipping brush in the powder and adding to a little egg mix, all that would be 'wasted' would really be the egg, and if it lasts for a week..? The other thing you could do, is just paint remnants onto a spare surface, like mineral paper, and use later to cut up for collage or mosaic.

so interesting to hear you say the egg mix becomes best after 3-4 days. I wonder what that means exactly, maybe thicker, more perfectly emulsified? It looks like your vinegar was dark, & I thought a first maybe it was brandy. I will try it out and see. ( not the brandy, the 3-4 days. ) Also curious about putting myrrh in the agg mix, which just makes such intuitive sense to me, being a perfect preservative, and also part of an incense mix I really love called Basilica. ( and of course, one of the three wise men's gifts) :) I've not tried egg tempera painting yet, but was inspired by several of your videos! Years back, maybe 10-15 years ago, I felt an urging to try it after always pretty much painting in acrylic, and bought the pigments. I had to leave so much behind in a big life change... so, have just newly received some mineral pigments, and a new kolinsky brush. Thank you so much for your inspiring and generous work, and your videos.

Goache remains water soluble, when tempera dries it will not dissolve.

    • @ElenaRoche

@@Alucard33592 Exactly! Why not just use acrylic all the way, and paint the whole thing? Plastic never dies, right? Linseed oil was one of the traditional sealants for icons. Of course, it means an icon is drying for up to one year after the painting job is finished, 6 months for tempera + pigment to fully cure, followed by 6 months of oil to be fully cured. In today's culture, it's ages and no one wants to wait 5 minutes. Do you want something truly sacred? Learn to wait and don't use plastic, I mean acrylic.

Thank you for the video! This is one of my favorite mediums.. I love the naturally luminous quality it has. Now I'm curious, how do you stop bugs from eating the paint while it's curing? That was the one problem I had.. I would let it dry before varnishing and come back a day or two later to find tiny little grooves in the paint layer where it had been eaten away.

In my experience, it beads up while painting and flecks off easily. It adheres to hide glue gesso much better.
