You said that there are usually 1-2 years of prerequisites to take before the actual dental hygiene program, how does that work? Like will that cost extra money in addition to the tuition for the degree? Will I be taking those prerequisites at the college that is offering the program?
That will depend. Hygiene programs usually have limited seats, so they only accept a certain amount of students (it's very competitive in most states). Most programs have a bunch of pre-reqs, some don't. For example, NYU only requires a BIO and MATH class before applying which you can take anywhere, but it's an expensive private university. Community colleges near me require a lot of courses so it would take anywhere from 1 to 2 years depending if you've taken some before and if you enroll full or part time. Some schools prefer if you do the pre-reqs in their school because 1. they only accept students from their own school, or 2. they take into consideration length of time you've been a student in their school. The last part means: someone that took pre-reqs somewhere else might get accepted into the program, but only if there are no other options. I hope that makes sense. You should definitely check with the school you wish to attend. You have to pay for all classes you take although some community colleges could be free depending on income. Many 2-year colleges in NYS offer full rides through grants/scholarships if it is your first college degree. Overall, community colleges are the most affordable option.

Thanks for the video! I am on prereqs right now, and I don't know if do I need to do something to prove that I'd done shadowing a dental hygienist or not. It is because my counselor said I just need to say to the supervisor dental hygiene program that I'd done shadowing, no need evidence such as paperwork or something. This does not make sense to me. Can you share your experience with shadowing or any recommendation? Thank you.
Shadowing was a requirement of the actual application to apply to my program. It was a strict guideline to follow. I could only get so many hours at one office vs another. There were forms created my the program that the hygienist I shadowed had to sign afterwards as proof. Check your school’s application policy on shadowing..

I’m from alabama but on the border line of Georgia. I plan to attend in Georgia but i’m also scared because in Hygiene school you have to find patients. Will it be difficult finding patients going to a school that’s an hour or two away?
At the program I attended, it was up to me to find patients but the also had recall patients that attended every 3, 4, and 6 months that would be assigned to students. I recommend to spread the word wherever you go in GA. For instance, on my college campus, I’d meet with the teachers and coaches to ask that they make it a requirement that their students and athletes come see me at the clinic.
Our clinic had recall patients established but I also had to find my own. I’d ask family, friends, family of friends, friends of family, and people on campus to be my patients. Honestly, I’d ask anybody

Hey, I see that your shirt says Mississippi Delta and I was wondering did you attend MDCC? I am a full time student there and I will be applying for the DH program soon. If so, how was the program? Was it hard to get in ?
Yes, I went to MDCC (best decision ever btw)! The program was tough but really fun, and because they accept such a small class compared to other programs, it can be more competitive. Go for it anyway! What’s for you is for you!

Main Prereqs are A&P1 and 2, Gen Chem, Organic Chem, Microb
Non Science Prereqs: Communication, Public Speaking, College Algebra, Statistics etc. (From my own research to my aim schools)
I’m not Kalesha but I hope this helps!
i have a question . i’ll be a senior in a few months and i’m about to apply for colleges in september - december. should i apply to a community college that has a dental hygiene program or should i apply to a community college, get my associates and then transfer to another school that has a dental hygiene program ?
Whichever you prefer!
I'm a single mom and won't be able to attend college in person at all, what do you suggest I do?
I am sorry to hear that but I know you’re killing it. I do not know enough about your situation to really suggest anything other than what you’ve possibly thought of. I hope you can one day rely on family support to go after the career you deserve to have for you and your child. God bless! 💕💕
Maybe there’s the option of online classes I would look into your local community college
Very informative vid really enjoyed watching! You mentioned going to community college or a university. I was thinking to try a technical school is that just as good? If anyone else knows feel free to lmk please😊
I am a sophomore at a university already however my school don't offer dental. Is it too late for me to try to search up dental school and still manage to graduate in 4 years?
It really depends on the pre-requisites you’ve already taken. Check with your advisor!
Do you have to complete all the pre recs for the school to get accepted for dental hygiene school
Hi
I’m in LA california I want to start my dental hygiene Can someone help me with school or which college I have to attend ? Please 🙏🏼
Hi, I’m from Mississippi too ( Central/ Madison). Did you get into the program? I went to ole miss for pre requisite courses (for nursing but I’m sure many will cross over to DH), and I’m scared of the difficulty level. Maybe I should do dental assisting first? Thanks.
What did you make on the science portion of the act?
Girl I don’t remember 😂😂 It was my highest though!
Can you get accepted if you applied before you done with pre recs for dental hygiene school
Dental hy-genuis I like that too
You can get just a certificate without college! Trade school!
A great video ❤️
Thank you so much 💓
Also, if I need any help with my classes, are there tutors available? How much would that cost?
I’m sure tutors are available and the prices will vary. I’ve never had a tutor so I cannot help you there!
Thank you
You are welcome!
does working as a sterilization tech help your application stand out?
I bet it would!
I’m thinking on going to dental school next year, but I wanted to know if you can have like tattoos but mostly a hand or arm tattoos?
Great question! I have coworkers with arm and hand tattoos. I really think it depends on your employer preferences.
@@KaleshaMonet Thank you
Teas is not required in Florida 🤷🏽♀️
Interesting!
If I have my associates in general studies could I go to bachelors in dental hygiene right away? Thanks for the video!
I believe there are some specific science classes needed in addition to your general studies to transition into dental hygiene! Check the pre-requisite requirements at the school you’re looking into!
Do you think 26 is too late to start and be a dental hygienist
Noooo!
Very nice
Guys can someone recommend me Dental Hygienist school in NYC or Florida please. I'm struggling to find a good one :(.
After I get my associates degree can I apply for a job in the dental field before applying to the dental hygienist program or after?
Depends on what you’re getting an associates degree in. To become a hygienist you have to go through a program though!
What do you consider a big class, number wise, onces enroll in DH program?
I consider a big class to be 20+
@@KaleshaMonet Thank you!
hello! do you need an associate’s degree before you apply for the program/can be accepted into the program?
No. I didn’t have an associates degree prior to applying.
Is there a teas test book you would recommend?
I do not know of any, sorry!
What if I just graduated high school and went straight to college + majored in dental hygiene for 4 years? Could that work? Or is the associates required?
That works!
Do dental hygienist extract teeth?
No!
can i get a bachelors in anything and then apply to a dental hygiene school?
Yes, as long as you have the pre-requisite classes.
I am currently doing health promotion as my major and I want to become a dental hygienist but my university doesn’t offer the course! What would you recommend doing?
Finding a school that has a program!
Im male in my late 30s, wiill this work?
Yes!
Is the teas test required?
Yes.
If you don’t mind me asking what age did you start your journey to RDH? I’m 25 trying to pick from nursing or dentist hygienist.
I was 19 when I got accepted into the DH program, but don’t let age stop you from doing what it is you truly want to do!
@@KaleshaMonet you didn't need pre requisites or anything? You just got accepted?
So which did u end up picking? Nursing or DH? Im on that same spot where i cant decide between nursing or DH. @clarkporcher6331
@@lolalalo5777 neither I picked surgical tech I start this fall.
@@KaleshaMonetis there a place where i can email you anout this (im 17 but dont have an insta and would like go talk more on the process, i dont really have a support team)
When you think is too old to become dental hygienist? I am about to be 29 and I feel like I fu**** up my twenties and is too late!!
This is my dilemma now. Going back and forth with anxiety and regrets. But, I think you should still go for it! The time is going to pass regardless if you attempt or not and we are still young !
I follow the dentist hygienist reddit forum and there’s so much people in their late 20s / early 30s that just became a dentist hygienist, it’s never late for you
How much did your schooling cost? I want to apply in 2023 but i want to save and the numbers aren't clear. Just a price range. Thank you♥️♥️
I remember it being about 2-3,000 a semester here in MS
Which online school did you enroll in?
UMMC Accelerated Dental Hygiene
Can’t you work for a dentist office for a year then go to school?
Maybe as an assistant or front desk, yes.
@@KaleshaMonet Thank you for responding dear.
What do you use to study for the HESI A2
I am unsure what the HESI A2 is.
@@KaleshaMonet in Texas that is the entrance exam. Did you have to take an entrance exam ?

If I already have a bachelors degree but in an unrelated field do I still have to go back to college or is there a faster route?
See what the requirements are at a dental hygiene program near you!
So do i need a degree in associates in applied science? then apply to the program. or do i take the prerequisites then jump into the program?
take the prereqs and dive into the program.
