Close but no cigar...Karen had an unmistakable rasp in her voice emanating from deep in her throat that you can't duplicate. .a velvety rasp voice...even when she spoke you could hear it. Janis Joplin was another singer her her voice was more pronunce..it was said Janis Joplin sang better when she had a sore throat 😂

Thank you for compiling this comparison. Tori is even closer to sounding like Karen than I realized. Without any visual cues but only if I only had the audio to go by I would not be able to pick the difference. I sincerely hope that Tori has a plan to put out an album of covers, not modernized or changed but a sincere reproduction of some of their best songs. I'd pay good money for that.

It's not supposed to be a competition. Karen Carpenter's voice was unique and her delivery sublime but what you're hearing is a studio production to give a certain sound that they wanted at the time. She was wonderful and we have the recordings to enjoy forever. Tori has a similar voice and sings the same songs beautifully. She's not doing an impression - the songs are classics and suit her voice and, imo, no-one writes songs like this any more so they bring out the best of her voice. Have a listen to the re-recordings that Richard Carpenter did with the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra where he removed a lot of the reverb from the originals so that it brings out Karen's truly glorious tones 😊

That young lady comes as close as humanly possible, but Karen had a voice that wasn't human, it was a gift specially made from heaven.

Tori's got similar base notes, but Karen has higher notes that Tori's voice doesn't replicate.

I believe the Carpenters did this same number in front of a large group at California State University Long Beach in the late '60s.

I'd say Tori's voice is more pleasant but that could also be the quality of the recording. There's a nostalgia feeling to the Carpenters recordings wile modern stuff is super sharp and perfect.
