  • Here's another one by popular demand. Hear both versions side by side and at the same time. There is a short excerpt where who you see and who you are hearing are not the same, can you find it? Write it down in the comments :)
This time, both versions weren't so much in sync, I adjusted playback speeds and timing where necessary, and also added an equaliser to Tori's track to make hers sound more like that of the Carpenters video.
Original version: • Burt Bacharach medley ...
Cover version: • EXTREME DIFFICULT VOCA...
Also take a look at the previous one: • We've Only Just Begun ...

I’m not sure how many people realize just how special this is… Karen Carpenter had one of the most unique vocal timbres in the history of music, intonation, color, placement, timing, emotion and that unbelievably beautiful sound. Until now Karen was a Unicorn in the world of pop music but to discover an artist like Tori Holub is like finding another Unicorn. One can only hope that she finds a songwriter and arranger who writes contemporary songs that mirror - not copy - the emotional universe that The Carpenters inhabited.

@kelvynification I absolutely do. This was my single favorite live video (Ed Sullivan) of a Carpenters song. To see Tori nail it so perfectly just blew my mind. She dropped this just days after I found her on UA-cam. No on in 53 years tackled this AND did it correctly! A tribute couple covered it at the wrong tempo! She is magical and has a few original songs. One was co-written by Steve Eaton who previously write All You Get From Love Is A Love Song, the last Top 40 Carpenters hit. With Donnie Demers they wrote her Christmas Again song. UA-cam has all her full length songs/videos. Some aren’t on her channel. Search her name and Merry Christmas Darling and you’ll find 3.

It is amazing to think that these two performances are over 50 years apart!! While there is and only will ever be one Karen Carpenter, Tori did an excellent job. She has a very bright future ahead as a singer if she wants it.

I’ve seen so many good singers crash and burn trying to sing Bacharach/David songs. Unusual rhythms, intervals and key changes. This is great.

Tori was invited to perform at the Carpenters 55th anniversary tribute in LA just a few weeks ago. Her performance is online here. Unexpectedly, Richard showed up at the event and Tori had the honor of meeting him. There is some talk that possibly she sent him a demo at his request. I don't know what would happen with it but certainly he knows who she is!

Nice! Pretty amazing replication! I am sure that no one sings as close to Karen as she does. That said, as a lifelong Carpenters fan, there is something "different" from what Karen does to what Tori does. It is part of Karen's signature style and sound. And, Tori doesn't mimic that in her sound. Karen's phrasing is extraordinary. that's a high bar to reach, that Im not sure is present in this creative comparison.
Part of Karen's signature sound is her folksy, "girl next door" approach to the song. . . infused with deep heartfelt emotion in her delivery. You feel like you are in the recording studio or concert with her. I have experienced that in an immersive way listening to the Carpenter's with my audiophile (HIFMAN Arya V3) headphones that reveal everything in the recording. It is very special and extraordinarily beautiful.
Karen Carpenter infuses an intimacy and polished vocal delivery that is seldom seen from other singers. You see this when she curls up a smile on one side of her face and kind of shrugs her shoulders a bit and bobs her head back and forth across the mic. This whole persona she brings helps shape her sound as it leaves her mouth. I have never seen anyone replicate that heart-felt, humble and "girl-next door" vibe. Not even Tori. It's quite different, actually. When I listen to Karen, I hear every nuance (even on cheap laptop speakers) as her musical phrasing, tonal shaping and extremely artistic use of "s's" and expansive emotion makes her songs soar to unknown heights. I hear Tori round off her consonants and miss all the nuances that make Karen's voice a masterpiece. For what its worth. Karen is the Quenn of phrasing, nuance, texture and perfection in every vocal delivery. As I've listened to audio engineers who recorded her say, "Karen nailed nearly every song int he first take". The song was living in her and she breathed it out into the world and into our radios in the 70's and beyond. That is a gift of untold proportions. And, ironically, Karen had little awareness of truly how good she really was that her music (and Richard's expectational arrangements) animated by the best LA session players created a legacy of beauty and simply lovely and enduring music.
While its amazing to technically duplicate her songs etc. , delivering it technically perfect is very different from a deep emotional delivery with her signature "girl-next door" whimsy. Something to think about.

She’s not Karen reincarnated as some are saying but she is very close! And that is just fine with me!!!
Perhaps even some original Carpenter’s style music in the future? There’s obviously a demand for it.

Karen was the ultimate "Whisper Singer". How all of us were mesmerized by Karen's voice back in 1969 when her voice started to be heard on national radio. At that time, there was no one before her who had a vocal sound like that. Karen was not being compared to anyone before her who had a similar sound. For those of us who were teens back in 1969, it is so refreshing to hear Tori. The issue is no one will ever equal or surpass Karen who in anyway imitates her sound, because Karen was the first. No doubt Tori is trying to clone the Carpenters sound as a tribute. But as the late Billie Holiday said, it is impossible to copy someone and project real feeling because your thinking to much. I can clearly tell the difference between Karen and Tori and so can Richard. Really hope she can create and work with someone that can produce a unique 2024 sound using the "Whisper Singer" approach. Good luck with that, because Richard Carpenter was also a genius like Karen.

OMG Eduard! You mad fool, you! This is awesome. The only thing I would have done differently is, in Walk On By, I’d have given one of the Richard parts to Tori. She did it all. Richard/harmony/Karen repeat. I’ll pass this along. Well done. Now Tori/ON-J? Tori/❤ What next? My friend Heru did a mashup of Crazy On You. Before you came along.

Thank you. I enjoyed your work. I am curious. Are you doing an impression of Karen? Or is that your real voice? Either way, beautiful. I will now, go seek out MP3s of The Carpenters and enjoy their art again. As a musician, I hear many key changes...very dangerous...to make that sound good

She's doing Karen's phrasing and timbre (nearly) on the Carpenters songs. She uses somewhat different styles on non-Carpenters songs. She does Olivia Newton-John and Joni Mitchell, but on Beatles songs she has her own style.
