- This second issue of Duke continues Skybound's G.I. Joe continuity, finding Duke on the run, besieged by enemies from all directions. As the walls close in, Duke finds himself hunted by Hawk's soldiers - Stalker and Rock 'n Roll! But when things look at their most bleak, a new opportunity presents itself as the Baroness proposes an alliance! In this video, I break down the second issue of Duke, a book that is quickly becoming one of my favorite titles in Skybound's Energon Universe, a shared comics universe featuring G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Void Rivals.

as someone just getting into G.I.Joe thanks to Skybound, this and Cobra Commander have very hooked. Williamson writing both books does help with nods and synergy. I am interested in seeing this play out. Duke's line on how he can't trust the system when the system doesn't trust him really sticks with me.

Highly recommended you to read Chuck Dixon's GI Joe run and his Snake Eyes run.
I gotta say, I think Clutch is my favorite character in the series so far. I've always liked "Ladies man" characters who end up falling flat on their faces when it comes to women. I also like the "Brilliant but Lazy" archetype and I'm getting that impression from this take on Clutch, given his degree at MIT and yet still choosing to work as a lowly mechanic. If he ends up joining G.I. Joe I'm interested to learn what his reasons will be.
You know speaking of Snake Eyes, I'm actually really impressed that Skybound isn't starting with him right away in this continuity. I'm glad we're building up the other Joe characters before getting to the most iconic and popular one.
Yeah, Clutch left quite an impression! I agree that the little touch of giving him a degree from MIT makes him more interesting. And I'm right there with you on Snake Eyes. I feel like it's inevitable that we see him eventually, but I think delaying his appearance for as long as possible would be a good thing. Kinda like what happened to Bumblebee in Transformers #1, I think it's a good choice to focus on characters with less saturation within the franchise.
Im so glad you're reviewing Duke despite you being a Transformers head. Obviously Snake Eyes is the main reason why I'm a fan but i always liked Duke and loving this new take so far. Love the 80s action muscle vibe it has too. Hope to see more Joe stuff on this channel as EU keeps expanding! Yo Joe!

As a kid who grew up in the 80's on both G.I.Joe and Transformers, the Energon Universe has been a dream come true, can't wait to see how it all unfolds!
Also, that final panel...the Baroness looking as sexy as ever!

Baroness is the wildcard. Hoping the characterization of her and by her extension her family from the Renegades cartoon is kept. Basically whenever they are put in a bad situation they not only side with the winner not just surviving but thriving.
I think that's a good observation. So far, I'm definitely getting the vibe that her allegiance is going to belong to whoever advances her interests and goals the most.

Love your breakdown of the art, I fixated on a lot of the same points you did while I was reading. The art for the EU so far has been incredible across the boards but this book might be my runner up behind DWJ for best art.
Yeah, I'm really digging the art in this book, but you're right, it's been really good across the board with all the titles.

Finally got around to reading the issue, good stuff! I don’t have much to say, other than I liked seeing Baroness at the end. She’s most of the reason I’ve been looking forward to this series.
I definitely liked this issue a bit more than the previous, but I’m still waiting for something to really hook me proper, though Baroness might be that. In any case wonderful analysis MB3!
I'm expecting things to pick up next issue, though it may take a bit longer to fully start cooking. I think Baroness will help change things up, and once we start getting more of Destro, we'll be off to the races.
Jordie Bellaire's coloring in Duke and Birds of Prey is beyond wonderful!!!
I'm a big fan of her work here! Haven't read Birds of Prey, but I'm intrigued.
So far Skybound's Energon Universe is doing well, but the only nitpick i have is that despite set in the 80s they're clearing using smartphones.
I think there going for modern day with an 80's aesthetic. Also, Daniel warren Johnsen (writer/artist for Transformers right now) hates drawing cellphones, which is why you see none in his books.
Yeah, I started to wonder when Sparkplug mentioned the internet in Transformers #3 - I thought maybe if it wasn't the 80s, I could maybe be the 90s, but it definitely seems like it's modern-day based on the G.I. Joe side of things.

I love Skybound’s take on G.I joe, especially in regards to Duke. I wonder how long it’ll be before Scarlett shows up. She’s my favorite! Well, her and Cover Girl.
That aside, I’m generally happy we have a new universe built from the ground up to crossover these two properties. It feels more natural, and the slower pace towards an eventual endpoint really allows for more time with these characters.
That, and we don’t have other random properties like Action Man or Visionaries clogging up the world. Nothing against those two, just that two is enough, thank you.
Although lots of foreign fans might say it’s unnecessary to bring these two together.

I can go either way. I like it when the Transformers are in a universe to themselves, or I can get behind a shared universe. I think you hit the nail on the head though in terms of planning it to be shared from the start, and keeping the property list fairly small. That's definitely my preference, so I'm glad to see that's how Skybound is approaching it. Really looking forward to seeing how everything develops over time!
Plus, there's the Void Rivals angle to consider as well that helps make this shared universe feel unique.

Thank you for the awesome discussion about Duke #2! I absolutely LOVED the page 1 shot of Clutch with the umbrella, clear blue sky and birds which sort of evoked a beach vibe, that pulls back into the next panel showing him on the roof of his trailer in the junkyard. Touches like this, just LOVE them.
Question for you Mr. Moonbase: Do I need to pick up G.I. Joe starting with #301 to keep pace with these characters and the larger Energon Universe? (I've never read G.I. Joe before).

The G.I. Joe series that starts with 301 is a continuation of the original Marvel comic, that ran across Marvel, IDW, and now Skybound. It's in a continuity separate from the Energon Universe, so it isn't necessary for keeping up with that continuity. However, it is written by Larry Hama, the guy who defined G.I. Joe comics for a lot of people (myself included). So if you ever get curious about the history of the franchise, it's worth reading. But, no, the only titles you need for the Energon Universe right now are: Transformers, Duke, Cobra Commander, and Void Rivals. There's a Free Comic Book Day Energon Special coming May 4th (in store) and May 8th (normal release) that will most likely be necessary reading as well.
