  • Oil in the coolant is a serious problem and can damage a lot of things if not taken care of right away. Hopefully this will help you if you ever come across this issue! If you are stranded on the road and have some pliers. bypass the oil cooler and connect the leftover hose back onto the other port on the cooler. top up the fluids, and hopefully you will be able to make it ! The oil filter can also be unscrewed, oil cooler removed, and then the oil filter will screw on to where the cooler mounts.

    Thank you for posting this vid. I replaced my head gasket. Still had oil in the water. Pulled it off again. This time had the heads checked and rebuilt. Put them back on. Still had oil in the water. I was looking at the block next but I saw this video. I coupled the two water lines together and started the engine. After about 45 seconds… oil started dripping out. Thank you thank you! So I didn’t buy a new block!!

    Colin I have a 2019 Ram 1500 (5.7 Hemi) . 46,000 miles . Was driving down the interstate & all of a sudden the low oil pressure light comes on . My girlfriend & I immediately get off the interstate & pull in an “express oil change place” upon further examination , I have what looks like chocolate milk coming out my radiator fill slot & reserve. I’m assuming it was oil mixing with the coolant ( as opposed to transmission mixing with the coolant) . However I’m not really sure (I guess it could have possibly been transmission fluid). Funny thing is, ZERO water\coolant was mixed in with the oil/ in the oil reservoir. Also, I Never had a temperature light come on ONCE, which I would have expected with a blown head gasket/cracked block. No white/black smoke coming out the exhaust. Also once we screwed the cap back on all the oil/ water reservoirs, there was not a single drip of oil leaking. The truck cranks right back up, so I’m assuming no catastrophic engine failure.(I had it towed to my girlfriends house, just to be on the safe side.
    If you had an educated guess, what is the problem ? I had two mechanically inclined friends suggest checking the oil cooler. Ram had a recall on my year model oil coolers, but only on the 4.3 engines .
    Thanks for your time,
    Jason

      Hello Jason! I looked into your vehicle and it appears to have a similar oil cooler setup. I would definitely recommend checking the oil cooler for sure. All of the signs point to it. Especially since you have oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil. The oil cooler has high pressure inside of it that it would cause oil to seep into the cooling system and would not allow coolant inside the oil system. Also you noted that it is running good with no head gasket failure symptoms. Good luck with your vehicle bro hopefully you will get it sorted out soon! 💯 🤝

If you have oil leaking onto the ground you should look underneath the vehicle and see if you can locate where the drips are coming from, sometimes it is just a loose oil pan bolt or oil filter. • @colin7761
      @colin7761  Рік тому +5

      Heey! It sounds like you fixed the main problem. Now the issue is getting out the gross stuff in your cooling system out. It’s not easy but it can be done and your heat will be able to be restored. If your able to, I’d first take out the coolant expansion tank and rinse it out as good as possible. Drain the cooling system. Fill it with water and a cooling system flush fluid that you can get from an auto parts store. When it is filled with the water and the flush, run the car to operating temperature and make sure the air is bled out from the cooling system. Turn your heat to maximum and once the fluid is flowing properly you should start to feel heat coming from air vents. Once you drain the flush I’d rinse out the cooling system a few times with water. Once it is clean enough for you, you can then put the proper coolant back in. Bleed all of the air out of the system and turn on the heat. Once you have proper coolant flow through the cooling system you’re heat will be working normally again, once your heat is working, you shouldn’t have to worry about it overheating again. Remember there is a bleeder valve on the top of the 3.5 to help bleed the air out of the coolant! Good luck with your car!!! Thanks for the comment! 💯

    Hey man! This initially happened to my chrysler (300 2014) and I changed the whole radiator and engine oil cooler/filter, had no issues then I experienced overheating again weeks later. I was told there was trapped air & residual oil from changing the parts but not flushing out the system. So I proceeded to flush the system at a mechanic & it was working like brand new. Now, 2 months later, I noticed my temp meter go slightly above normal, checked the coolant tank and saw that there’s mixed oil in again! I’m not sure what to do anymore. Car means a lot to me so I’d really really like to fix it and keep it running. Do you think the replacement oil cooler gave out because it was swapped out without flushing the system? As long as it hasn’t been seriously overheated the mixing alone shouldn’t hurt it too seriously. Just find whatever component is causing the issue, repair that, and flush the cooling system really good. Also change your oil and make sure that is 100% clean before running it. You likely won’t be able to get it all flushed out at once as it is really messy but over a number of changes it should clear out properly in the cooling system. Good luck bro 💯

    • @colin7761
      @colin7761  2 роки тому +2

      It took a while bro. About 3-4 fill/flushes the first day using coolant flush stuff that mixes with water and breaks down oil. Got the car started up and up to temp/ a little drive, then drained and refilled with new flush stuff each time. You can also remove the coolant res and spray it out with a hose to get any stuck chunks. Did another coolant flush the next day after a bit of driving, then the next day drained out the system. Rinsed with water. Then I added the proper mopar coolant. After a couple weeks the remaining oil leftovers will accumulate in the coolant res(assuming you fixed the oil problem) the best way to get rid of that is by draining it out of the bottom of the coolant res and rinsing out the reservoir while the hose is off the bottom. Then top it off with coolant and continue to monitor the coolant. Repeat this process as necessary, After a while there will be less and less accumulation and eventually there will be none left. Yes it was very nasty goop 😂

      Thanks for your comment. I mean, I did explain what was going on. If you want to skip through it and miss some stuff, that’s on you. The main point is the oil cooler was bypassed and the remaining holes were inspected for leaks. This is a very simple process that doesn’t need much explanation. Hope this clears up any confusion. Take care 💯

      @@valentillo91 the oil cooler is what the oil filter screws onto. There is two coolant hoses going into it. Checkout my other video on how to replace the oil cooler.
