I have ordered transmission cooler for the car I was going to change the cooler and flush all of the coolant out of my car and add more transmission fluid to the car. I would assume that the reservoir had to be changed, with the oil in, it has a sensor... Also thermostat, temp coolant sensor, fan switch, gets all affected... What do you think...

    The one thing you did not check was human error, very common nowadays that none mechanical people place oil in modern car in any hole they can find and coolant in the closest hole possible. Always keeping mechanics in work.

    Great video. It's made me learn something new about my A3.
    Since owning the car, I have done a few long trips like 3 to 4 hours in the car. But no over heating. I don't have obvious signs like Mayo on the oil cap, think it's a head gasket. But I got a head gasket tester.
    The results were - yellow means it's a headgasket
    Blue means nothing wrong with it
    And green means possible headgasket or possible contamination.
    My A3 got GREEN. I don't have oil in the coolant tank like this car does, but is it worth changing the filter and flushing the system, then putting new coolant in?
    Hope to hear from your reply soon. Thank you.

    the thing is, your test would only be positive if the cylinder was to blow into the waterways, overhead cam engines have a oil passage from the block to the head that is more psi then the cooling system. and when it blows out that way the oil system feeds into the cooling system .

    • @FlatRateMechanic
      @FlatRateMechanic  6 років тому +2

      This is very true and a great point to bring up. It is very very rare for oil to leak into coolant through the head gasket unless the car has been overheated and the head is warped. Headgasket is designed to hold back over 200PSI in combustion pressure so unless the car has been overheated it is pretty unlikely to have 30psi of oil breech that seal. But as you have stated not impossible. And if the car was not showing any signs of overheating would probably be on of the last this I would consider.

      I have a bunch of goop in the cooling system of my 3.9 Impala. Looks like peanut butter pudding, latte color. car runs fine - no smoke engine seems strong. No sign of water in the oil or transmission. I'm hoping it is the transmission cooler. It's thick and nasty. Very hard to flush any of it out. It overheated and I parked it immediately. Any suggestions for cleaning it out? I have heard that soap for the dishwasher, due to its lack of foam will work to flush the stuff out.
      I'm thinking that I need to seal the radiator off and pressure test it. It has so much gunk in it though I don't know it that would work.

Basically I have oil deposits in my coolant tank, oil has leaked into my coolant resovoir and and a layer of around 2-3mm builds up and sits on top of the coolant. My car is a Peugeot 207 1.4 Petrol 2011 model with manual gearbox. I have been driving it fine for nearly 3 years with this issue and have done approximately 12000 miles since I first noticed this. When I take into into the garage they seem to think it is a blown head gasket. There is also a small oil leak on the cylinder head on the left hand corner.

    Hey! Thank you for your information.. Let me give you the run down.. 01 4Runner 6 cylinder... Transmission cooler is built into the radiator.. Took my truck to Toyota dealership 3 days ago.. Diagnosis was tranny fluid and coolant had mixed together.. They replaced my radiator with a new one.. Flushed tranny twice.. Paid and drove off the lot and got home to check my coolant reservoir. Mud milkshake!!!!!! Returned to dealership very upset.. WHile driving back tranny was shifting hard. Almost slipping a few times.. No overheating from what I can tell on gauges. Being that they replaced radiator, flushed tranny and told me all was well I trusted it was fixed.. Obviously not. Can you advise me on what to do or to be aware of at this point???? Thank you sir..

    • @FlatRateMechanic
      @FlatRateMechanic  6 років тому

      Well unfortunately once coolant contaminants transmission there is a high probability that they'll be permanent damage caused to the transmission. Flushing it out several times is your best bet In hope that it will save it. It's really all you can do. And as for the sludge in the overflow tank chances are it was probably just residual. It's really hard to get all that stuff out of the system once it's in there. I have successfully flushed transmissions in the past but we also make sure the customer is fully aware that it could possibly not help at all. Best of luck.

      The Flat Rate Mechanic Thank you sir for replying.... Let me ask you this.. After many UA-cam videos and research I had learned when coolant and tranny fluid mix together due to a bad intercooler one is supposed to flush the engine as well because the coolant runs through the thermostat and such also. Causing that fluid to be present in other parts of the engine. I know they didn’t do and engine flush. They also didn’t replace transmission fluid filter.

He said someone told him the water pump or the transmission cooler was leaking, When i checked it out it was a big hole in a water hose that come straight up from his water pump to around his intake about 6 inches long.. well I took that off but I noticed the water was oil pink really bad, and so is the inside of the radiator... It looks like his transmission lines is running to a separate transmission cooler that is not part of the radiator that someone installed before he even purchased the truck.... its not leaking... would that cooler still cause fluid to back up really bad into his radiator even if it is not leaking the transmission cooler is not leaking?

    Hello Flat Rate Mechanic, got a quick query. Hopefully, you see this comment and can answer. :-)
    I've got an 2011 Opel/Vauxhall Insignia CDTI that I use as my workhorse car. It's got 65,000 miles on the clock and has got oil in the cooler. Hoping it's not a head gasket because they're a nightmare on Insignia's. It'd be a shame to scrap or sell it distressed as it's a good clean car in great condition (exterior and interior).
    1) There's no visible white smoke.
    2) There's no smell from the exhaust.
    3) No milky coloration in the oil. In fact, oil seems fine.
    4) No steam from the engine/exhaust.
    5) There's no overheating...needle stays at 90 all day long.
    6) There was slight diminished acceleration up a motorway/freeway slip road followed by a "coolant low, top up" message on the dashboard but I've driven it 25 miles since with no incident. No limp mode, no significant reduction in performance.
    What do I find slightly concerning is that there seems to be more oil in the coolant even though I've not run the car for 24 hours. Most of it's still pink with a small grey head. Plus, there were some very small bubbles in the radiator after running it according to Halfords Autocentre.
    Do you think this is an oil cooler issue or a head gasket issue? Mechanics/Engineers I've called seem split on the issue.

I stopped driving it cause my transmission started hesitating to change gears in automatic but it changes just fine in manual. Foe, the cause might be that you drive on short distances. If your oil and coolant doesnt warm up enough it might cause the cap to be muddy. Try flooring it around the city to warm up the engine to the right temperature then drive on a higher rpm for a bit and see if it fixed the issue shorty

      Are you got all the old oil cleaned from cooling system after the repair. Could possibly just be residual circulating through the system.Sometimes it can be very tough to get all the oil removed and can appear sludgy several flushes afterwards I would recommend using a marine bilge pump cleaner to flush system.

    • @josepeixoto3384

       You FIXED it,probably; It ALWAYS re-appears,when the engine gets HOT; HOT water "dissolves" that black grime well; that is how i clean radiators,hoses, reservoir,etc in my shop; keep checking your oil LIKE A HAWK!!!! make sure it is not going down; oil floats,so "grab"it with tissue paper through the reservoir opening; takes hours; you *absolutely* needed to remove the reservoir and "hot water" it(i sometimes use gasoline too,if it's handy).
