For over a year, Brandon Lee has been hoarding a bin of iPhones intending to test their cameras. So, I took him at his idea to see how the iPhone camera has evolved.

The camera on my iPhone 13 Pro in general takes nice photos but sometimes they are just too oversharpened. It is especially noticable when there is lots of fine detail like leaves on a tree or grass. I had a Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and while the camera was not as consistent at capturing realistic looking photos, when it did take a good photo it was phenomenal. Really just beautiful photos. I still have a bunch of photos that I took on that phone and even to this day I look back at them and reminisce. The iPhone camera is good, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra camera is phenomenal if a little less consistent. Hopefully Apple will significantly improve their cameras in the iPhone 15 Pro.

I got a 13 mini after my 8 Plus and I just don’t like the new camera as much! My two main complaints come from the fact that it feels like I have to be farther away from what I’m shooting for the subject to be in focus if I’m doing some kind of close up, and I actually really liked using the telephoto camera much more than the ultra wide one.

    • @petermuller5031

When I switched from my iPhone 6 to the second gen SE, I also noticed that I have to move the phone further away in order for the subject to be in focus. Sometimes this is really annoying, but the overall picture quality has improved compared to the 6.

    • @lucasgomes6096
      @lucasgomes6096 Рік тому +3

Honestly I thought I would use the ultrawide way more than I actually use. They know people like the telephoto more and that’s why it’s behind the “pro” paywall.
I don’t think anyone would buy a pro if its differential was a ultrawide camera.

    • @SaltyMaud

@@lucasgomes6096 If only all the cameras were actually equally good I'd use them more. That's kind of the problem with _all_ multiple camera setup phones. Secondary cameras are more utility options when you absolutely can't make the main camera work for the subject so at least you have _something._

Brandon nails it! It is amazing how far the camera on iPhones (and phones in general) have advanced. Still, over processing, and unreliability of portrait modes are too common. Still, your average user doesn't care or notice (not judging), yet it is great that these devices allow us to capture the moment anywhere and anytime.

I’ve been disappointed with the overprocessing in the newer iPhones. Raw helps, but the whole point of a phone camera is to be fast and convenient, if I have to have a whole raw workflow I might as well use a dedicated camera. I’ve been seriously considering getting an 8 Plus or X. They had a weird proto-SmartHDR that sometimes messed up bad, but for the most part looked really good without much signs of overprocessing. And the raw files I got from those were still incredible, it had a unique noise profile which I swear looked almost like grain at lower ISOs and with how sharp the 2x lens was in good light there was so much detail that I cropped some shots from landscape to portrait and vice versa and they still looked awesome on a large display!

I'm not sure if it's how much better "real" cameras have gotten in the time since, or this overreliance on AI sharpening and scene detection but I find myself using my phone's camera less today than ever. If I want to take a good picture, I get my real camera. Most of my phone's camera roll is just random pictures of part numbers/things I need to remember and very little actual photography. Here's hoping this is something that gets course corrected and we can get back to seeing these phone cameras used to their full potential. Those iphone 14 pro prores shots look really nice.

It would be difficult to get the exact first version of IOS on each phones since you can't downgrade IOS, it would not differ so much that it can make a huge impact. There a few instances that it could affect the processing, but you need to know the logs of each update to know if they've added processing info on that update.

I'd wager it wouldn't matter because once Apple create a phone and tout it's camera capabilities they stick with it's processing and colour temp until the next hardware refresh.

I remember getting my first Iphone, it was a 4. The pictures I took on a trip to Hawaii with it are still some of the best photos I think I've ever taken. Something about it made it really easy to point and shoot. Sure could be done better now but I don't ever find myself thinking of taking so many photos like I did back then when it was still novel

Idk what apple did but their ProRAW still looks processed. Idk if there are better ways to shoot RAW on iPhone like a Google Pixel phone. Besides that now we got MotionCam on Android and it's amazing cause you can shoot RAW video even.

iPhone 3GS was my first iPhone but I was able to return it as the iPhone 4 was out a few weeks later. IPhone 4 will always be my favourite iPhone. The retina screen and camera was a game changer at the time. Every other phone on the market was blurry in font and images.

This is why I still sub to MacAddress! Love this kinda deep-dive!
Also, I still have iPhone 4 photos, cropped in for framing & printed on canvas, on my wall. They’re near the ceiling so nobody’s looking too closely, but they still hold up! And I agree, there’s too much processing in the new phones, but my guess is it’s so they can use cheaper hardware & (attempt to) simulate better quality.

I love the video. Something about those old cameras makes the photos feel like they’re from a different time. However I have to disagree with Brandon’s statement that cameras in phones weren’t common in 2007. Cameras in phones were plenty common back then. True, most of them sucked, but there were amazing cameras for the time, like in Nokia N95 with the 5Mpx sensor. Half a year before iPhone came to be. And unlike iPhone, even the bad phone cameras of the time could capture video. iPhone just didn’t prioritise camera because it would mean that for the technology of the time, they’d need to make the phone way thicker. They just waited until the technology became more usable for their form factor.

Would love to see these stacked against the Sony Ericsson K series phones. They were at the time the best cameras that were available iirc. I used mine for back up when taking photos for client websites either as a draft to come back later with a proper camera or even sometimes they became the actual photos used for a while.

Great idea for a vid and utilization of other LMGers. I felt seen about ProRAW. The iPhone 14 Pro (going from a 12 Pro) as I like the 48 MP captures more as the feel more “photo-esq”.
While photos have been “eh” for upgrades, The one place where Apple really leveled up is ProRes, I’ve been surprised how much better video is with my iPhone 14 Pro. I’ve shot action outdoors stuff like skiing for a UA-cam review and doesn’t look “phone” like.
Anyhow keep these coming (Mac Address’s entire vibe is on point), I like the non evangelical Apple coverage of Mac Address. I’d love to see Jonathan and Quinn of Snazzy Labs cross paths at some point.

I like the XS camera and still use the phone because it has the default wide angle and normal focal lens (which they call telephoto). Subsequent phone require you spend way too much money for the "pro" model while the normal model have a useless (to me) ultra wide angle lens along with the defaylt wide angle.
One big difference between 3GS and 4 was introduction of HDR which makes a huge difference in sunny/summer scenes.

The shots from the iPhone debut presentation gave me a video idea for this channel. A retrospective on Apple's place in computing history, with a specific focus on two key historical events. 1) "The Mother of All Demos", in which many of the things that some people wrongly attribute to Apple were introduced far before Apple even existed, but which Apple later introduced into actual consumer products for one of the first times (if not *the* first time). 2) That iPhone event, where Steve Jobs essentially gave "The Mother of All Demos" for smartphones, and *actually* caused Apple to change computing history effectively by themselves. I think the major discussion topics would be just how colossally important these two developments were for how people live in the information age, and how even if they hadn't happened, someone would have done them soon enough.

I think I personally really enjoyed the iPhone 7+ cameras and then again for the iPhone 12 Pro; but only because I prefer iOS over Android (between these two generations, I was using Pixel phones, which were being praised for their photo software capabilities, if you recall).
I don't necessarily think the 14 has anything that makes it GRAND, but I do like the ability to shoot at 48MP PRORAW, the capabilities of the 12MP sensor via the Photonic Engine, and its video capabilities. I even picked upt he 512GB model because I use a couple of gimbals for shooting video and photo in action.

The first iPhone camera was even at the time, nothing to write home about. At the time, Sony had the top tier camera systems used in their Cybershot series of phones (although the cameras in their not quite as high end Walkman phones at least had autofocus and took decent enough pics for the time.) Nokia had the N95 which was up there with Sony's Cybershot phone camera. The iPhone didn't get a camera considered "good" until the iPhone 4. (Yes the 3GS had auto focus finally, but still lagged behind in the lens and sensor dept).
And yes Brandon, most phones had cameras on them by 2007, even if most were not good. But I distinctly remember people being disappointed with the iPhones cameras until the iPhone 4, because there were other phones with way better cameras on them
