It's amazing to me that Apple puts so much effort into having their devices be able to produce such high quality videos, and yet, when you want to transfer these massive files they have used a port that only supports speeds so low that it takes many hours to transfer. Why do they resist using standard USB C so much?
The funny thing is the iPad has a lightning 3.0 port with 3.0 speeds, so I can’t for the life of me understand why they can’t at least put that in the iPhone.
@@davexmit That's a terrible answer, network transfer speeds are worse than USB 2.0... I know Apple's money hungry but I think you're wrong about iCloud being the reason for this
I know it's from 3 months ago But to put it simply, when Apple moved from the 30 pin to the lightning cable a lot of companies were really mad about it, having to now make a new product to fit a different cable slot. Even if it's only minor it's still a huge cost. And of course Apple Certified cables, they do generate Apple a fair chunk of income, not enough to cause a hindrance to their income, but enough to say "hmm I DO like this extra bonus so maybe I will keep it" Eventually they're gonna have to use USB-C however, I doubt people will support a full wireless system
I often shoot video in Dolby Vision 1080 and It really lifts the lighting and white balance quality and UA-cam automatically creates an SDR and HDR versions. Gives very nice indoor lighting.
It was immediately obvious - the colour and fov very first shot, as well as the audio quality, were all glaringly different to other recent LMG videos. Still amazing quality and great content as always. Definitely noticeable but not in a bad way.
The bleh motion blur (frame rate?) and distorted corners on any shot showing a full room make it obvious from shot one. The close-ups looked surprisingly good though.
This is one of the weaknesses of a phone camera. To achieve pleasing motion blur often depends on an exposure time of 1/2 the actual frame time. (So 1/60 for 30 fps, for example). However, a phone by itself has few options to control exposure. It does not have an aperture to close down (which is already a very fast F1.5), and most people shooting on iPhones do not use ND filters. This leaves shutter speed as the only remaining control available. And with an F1.5 aperture, shutter speeds in excess of 1/5000 in daylight isn’t uncommon.
I work for a small tv station, and the work camera maxes out at 35Mbps. But it’s “fine” so they don’t want to upgrade. Sometimes I shoot footage with my iPhone because it actually makes a better image. The old camera does have XLR inputs, ND filters, and optical zoom though. Yay.
from the thumbnail and title, I assumed it was shot on an iphone, but it was really high quality. one shot seemed to jump from one iphone camera to another abruptly, not sure if that was a zoom in done in editing or an actual camera switch in software while shooting.
I am solely using my iPhone 12 & Filmic Pro fro my content creation. Is it possible to get a shallow depth of filed using the app to achieve a 'soft background'? I've not been able to work it out....thanks
HEVC supports various chroma sampling formats. They're probably just referring to what the HEVC encoding format of some device or software offers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Video_Coding#Profiles
It doesn't look bad. It's just not deceptively put together. For example if you do the long focus pulls and use the gimble to make smooth sweeping transitions, you can stitch together something quite close to what one would expect a normal average youtube video to be. I also don't know if there is now a way to shoot in 24 rather than 30 frames. That too would make a difference. Over all great video and content as always. Cheers!
Using iPhone for videoshoots can be really beneficial if you really need small and light equipment. I remember story about one Russian TV channel in which crew used iphones, small gimbles and wireless LAVs to shoot on-site reports and sending records back to HQ via internet. I specifically remember they praised tech for ability quickly setup and start shoot almost instantly
I thought the interior shots looked a bit flat, but it's fine for what was needed. It's pretty good if all you already have an iPhone in your pocket & want to shoot something, but it's not replacement for a real video camera. High bitrates are nice, but you need a decent lens if you really want to be 'pro'.
Your message notification sound effect at the end had me scratching my head at the wondering why I didn't see any new red dots pop up in the dock... I get random mystery notification sounds on my iPhone sometimes, but NEVER on the Mac(s). I'm not keen on the idea of taking video - or even photos - on my iPhone. My small collection of mirrorless Sonys have better looking output by a massive margin and I find the results far easier to manage with memory cards and 3rd party applications. The iPhone is only used for inconsequential images for notetaking or quick communication purposes. If Apple lets me write directly to removable media bypassing photostream/icloud then I'd give it a 2nd look.
How long did me take to figure out this video was filmed differently? about 10 seconds, as soon as I noticed all the crushed whites, but I'm not a normal person, so... eh... :)
First thing i would do is bin the iPhone and use a Sony Xperia PRO-I. Not only that it utilizes a 1“ Sensor, it has an Audio Jack. Granted, it’s automatic mode is worse than what the iPhone can deliver, but for manual/pro recording? It’s perfect for that with it’s color profiles and everything, it even has an MicroSD Card Slot. And a fast usb port to get all the footage to your computer, not a crappy, slow lightning port. Again, seen from a professional view, not as a private user.
You do know you can use 0.1 zoom increments between the whole range right? It’s not just .5, 1, and 3. Just pinch to zoom on the screen in or out as you would an image.
Just so you know the samsung S23 Ultra has all the video settings built-in the native camera app ( no need to install other app like on iPhone ) it can shoot in 8K and has better low light performance that the iphone 14 pro
I am thinking on starting to shoot some videos and interviews with a similar setup you proposed and some lights to help. In the end is about how your viewers watch the videos. If they will end up watching it while sitting on the toilet, does it really matter if it’s in an ultra high resolution? It just has to be good enough but I feel extremely good might not be worth it, or would be benefited by a very small subset of viewers to justify the extra efforts. Just my two cents.
With my eyesight, never saw the difference. Still, enjoyed the video. A few years ago I attended a trade conference for e-learning professionals. Attended a session on creating video with iPhones. iPhone 6s was the hardware at that time. Even then the quality was impressive.
why didn't you use airdrop to transfer the videos? it's so much faster than using the usb cable. it's a direct device to device adhoc connection, so you get the full mimo channels between the iphone and imac and it's ballistic
Would love to see how this compares to shooting with the Sony Xperia (yes I know it's an apple channel but this video production has sparked a really interesting idea of what you guys would do with a dedicated camera phone)
Within the Apple Ecosystem, a professional video workflow would be to shoot on an iPhone, transfer to a Mac and then edit within Final Cut. I can't imagine Apple releasing a dedicated cinema camera so it's interesting to see them push the the iPhone as it's currently the weakest link in the chain.
@TheRealBandito Right! However, that requires crazy fast WiFi which is really expensive. So then that means you're buying an expensive phone and untop of that having to get expensive internet just to have an optimal workflow. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me but that's Apple's MO for ya 🤷♂

another banger of a video from MA!
How about using airdrop for transferring the videos to the Mac? Shouldn't it be faster?
These are UA-cam videos. Using the iPhone is perfect and cost effective. UA-camrs thinking they need RED or 8K cameras are simply dillusional. Great work!
Second 0:12 i felt something was off and combined with the video title i quickly figured that the video itself was shot with an iphone.
In the studio-soundstage shots it is barely recognizable. But yeah sound is not as great as it is usually.
Anyway great video jonathan an hoffman!
Idc about ProRes , but that plot twist in the end of the video put a smile on me, nice touch
@@jimjamjon2285 Plus the M1 Macs having USB 4 and they're effectively based on the phone SoCs, so just why?
@@davexmit That's a terrible answer, network transfer speeds are worse than USB 2.0... I know Apple's money hungry but I think you're wrong about iCloud being the reason for this
I know it's from 3 months ago
But to put it simply, when Apple moved from the 30 pin to the lightning cable a lot of companies were really mad about it, having to now make a new product to fit a different cable slot. Even if it's only minor it's still a huge cost.
And of course Apple Certified cables, they do generate Apple a fair chunk of income, not enough to cause a hindrance to their income, but enough to say "hmm I DO like this extra bonus so maybe I will keep it"
Eventually they're gonna have to use USB-C however, I doubt people will support a full wireless system
USB C is just a port type after all, you can be USB C and still be stuck at USB 2.0 speeds, which to be fair is what most Android phones do still.
I like that Inception moment at the end of the video 🎬🎥... 🍿
I often shoot video in Dolby Vision 1080 and It really lifts the lighting and white balance quality and UA-cam automatically creates an SDR and HDR versions. Gives very nice indoor lighting.
I watch you tube content providers using older Iphones for their footage. Honestly it looks great.
the video felt a bit grainy compared to usual but it was definitely good enough to watch like normal
saw it in the very first shot that you filmed it with a phone. knew immediately you would film the entire thing on iphone
It was immediately obvious - the colour and fov very first shot, as well as the audio quality, were all glaringly different to other recent LMG videos. Still amazing quality and great content as always. Definitely noticeable but not in a bad way.
Loved David snatching that camera in the beginning. You snooze you lose! Haha
Yay.
This channel is really underated
from the thumbnail and title, I assumed it was shot on an iphone, but it was really high quality. one shot seemed to jump from one iphone camera to another abruptly, not sure if that was a zoom in done in editing or an actual camera switch in software while shooting.
This guy deserves way more subs
I am solely using my iPhone 12 & Filmic Pro fro my content creation. Is it possible to get a shallow depth of filed using the app to achieve a 'soft background'? I've not been able to work it out....thanks
Such an informative vid! I learned so much!
I love this channel, omg why do you make so few videos. You guys are almost a year old. And still have a slow irregular schedule.
Great video as always. You could tell that it war filmed on an iPhone because you could notice noise and a soft image.
I had never knows what 4:2:2 was or that HEVC only did chroma per four pixels. I always learn something new with this show!
HEVC supports various chroma sampling formats. They're probably just referring to what the HEVC encoding format of some device or software offers.

Cheers!
Honestly: the theme of the video I don't flipin care about.
But man that is a nicely directed and edited piece. :)
0:39 I wouldnt say they're the best, just one of the best
Last I got the regular 13; This year I'll jump to the 14 Pro and fully take advantage of the prores.
This was a great video. Very entertaining to watch.
Would love to see a revisit to this video
Aside from the first shots (and of course, the title) it looked pretty good for Phones Only.
Again, seen from a professional view, not as a private user.
audio also impacted so much I think, its muffled a bit on outdoor scene
Jonathan: "because Premiere always crashes." @6:20
I felt that in my soul.
You do know you can use 0.1 zoom increments between the whole range right? It’s not just .5, 1, and 3. Just pinch to zoom on the screen in or out as you would an image.
I haven't seen you upload since last year!
Just so you know the samsung S23 Ultra has all the video settings built-in the native camera app ( no need to install other app like on iPhone ) it can shoot in 8K and has better low light performance that the iphone 14 pro
so true I wish apple can do that
I am thinking on starting to shoot some videos and interviews with a similar setup you proposed and some lights to help. Just my two cents.
did you also use an iPhone camera for the whole video??? awesome
I love this guy!
With my eyesight, never saw the difference. Still, enjoyed the video. A few years ago I attended a trade conference for e-learning professionals. Attended a session on creating video with iPhones. iPhone 6s was the hardware at that time. Even then the quality was impressive.
What I use when filming on iPhone and need to transfer my Mac is AirDrop
why didn't you use airdrop to transfer the videos? it's so much faster than using the usb cable. it's a direct device to device adhoc connection, so you get the full mimo channels between the iphone and imac and it's ballistic
just a quick gripe, why didnt you just airdrop the footage to the imac, it wouldve been considerably faster
Always thought iPhone shots looked a little over sharp, noticed that from the start of this episode. Still better than I’d expect from a phone though
WHAT DO YOU MEAN première hasn't crashed ?? That's illegal hands off keyboard and mouse I'm seizing this computer
When you crop the video it’s kind of obvious but it’s still really impressive. I almost cannot tell the difference
@@ericvisser5253 I would bet that most people who have an iPhone 13 Pro (or Pro Max) also have a wireless router that is fast enough. And if you're talking about shooting video for yt, that's pocket change compared to all of the other stuff you'll need (studio lighting, audio, etc) to make the video look this good.
@@ericvisser5253 When using airdrop the data don't go through your WiFi router. It connects 2 devices directly. And most Apple devices have WiFi 6 for years.
@@ericvisser5253 No need for internet if your devices are on the same network and modern home routers/APs have WiFi 6 aswell as most modern phones. I can easilly get 1Gigabit/s from my iPhone to my desktop PC.
@@lukassury9114 Yes you could just use airdrop but airdrop is still slower compared to USB-C. Especially if Apple made changes to the IPhone to where you could transfer to an external SSD via USB-C. It would smoke airdrop no problem
The mics from the wired apple earbuds from my experience are pretty good
