KSP: Orbital Construction of an Interplanetary Ship!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лип 2024
- Today we will construct a large interplanetary ship, which contains 8 crew seats, a rover, an Eve Lander and a Gilly exploration vessel. Too much for one launch, we'll have to assemble it in orbit!

Matt: "... and the video would have been over an hour long!"
Me: "great, i can watch it while i do my ion burns!"
Oh man, did I regret that setup. Yes, do half of your transfers in the Jool system with Ion thrusters and barely any solar panels. You will definitely not regret that decision deeply
Oh no just the picture in my mind of someone doing burns that long has given me mental issues

Here's a challenge for you, Matt: make a ship which carries a kerbal for every moon and planet in the solar system. Your job is to use the ship to visit every single planet and moon and leave a flag on every single one of them and return to Kerbin after that.
Good luck.
Isn't this called the "grand tour"? I though he already did one of those.
Darkner that is a type of speed run you know
thats called a grand tour mate
A video like this would be like 2 hours long
@@cornebeyers485 he did one without carrying a bunch of kerbals and skipping Eve, tylo, and (I think) Moho. This would be a little different but much harder.
Matt I would be totally ok with a 1 hour vid! Hype for next week😉
Me too
@@krizsan0596 No, you don't. I have a 45 minute video on my channel, I don't recall paying for it...
@@krizsan0596 I don't have that, either. I don't know what you're on about.

"It's no easy to land on gilly, almost like docking...",
Me: 👀
how tf is docking easy, well it's easy for this guy but for us normal people, it's hella hard
@@NoahDaun-yd2epif you have control of both vehicles and can rendezvous then the lowne lazy method trivialises it
-approach and kill relative velocity, get decently close (like target on other vessel’s docking port
- set sas to target
- switch vessel, repeat from step 2
- gently accelerate one vessel toward the other
You should try and smash a ship into the surface of eve as fast as possible
Thats fun
Rip kerbals
Not burning up will be hard
@@CreepilyCrply that's the challenge
I know
Just recently started playing this thanks to you
Finally got my first space plane into space today where it was immediately body slammed by my only orbiting satellite destroying both
It was in a low orbit it just happened to be over the space centre as the plane crossed over its flight path
I probably should have checked it's position before launching and waited for it to pass over first
The probability of this happening is absolutely ridiculously low.... sorry about that bro
@@Stratocasterhead51 on the plus side it was an unmanned flight
Shadow Heart man that’s super unlucky xD
Should of clipped it. The probability that everything aligned perfectly for a less than 0.1km encounter is so astronomically improbable... I’m hard pressed to believe this actually happened. If it did... damn bro! Check the map prior to launch while on t launch pad 😂. If it didn’t happen... great story
"You have to be careful with the Kerbal EVA packs on Gilly, or you could send your kerbal on an escape trajectory."
Challenge: Gilly mission where a Kerbal's EVA pack IS the ascent module (i.e. the kerbal uses it to get from Gilly's surface back to the interplanetary transfer stage)
And descent module
Not enough delta-v to descend and ascend.
But there is EVA suit fuel with the inventory system, so you could have a storage container with more.
I wouldn't mind longer videos, like one that you do a real time build of a rocket, no speed up and hearing your thoughts on the parts and the build haha
“Put some parachutes on it... save the polar bears etc etc etc”. THIS on a T-shirt with a rocket capsule parachuting and a polar bear underneath it surrounded by used boosters on an iceberg! 😂
YES!
I need
I’ll take the entire stock
Cause there’s non >:(
This is one of my favorite ship designs you've made Matt. Two launches, on-orbit assembly, sleek and realistic-ish looking (for KSP of course). I see some echoes of the Nautilus-X concept from a few years back. Looking forward to part two.
"My lawyers will be in touch if anyone uses this design without a providing a royalty in the form of a tee shirt purchase or patreon donation"
*SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT LEGAL TEAM WANTS TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION
I, for one, would have no problem with an hour of your brand of KSP!
Already looking forward to part two.
I am unbelievably jealous. I haven’t made it to Minmus yet. I only have 3 satellites in sandbox mode.
Update: In the months since this comment, I have progressed greatly. I have so many satellites around Kerbin that collision is actually a threat. A Mun colony, working rescue crafts for Mun landings gone wrong. I’m honestly impressed with myself.
Impressive.
how've you done in the 3 years since the comment
@@ez_theta_z9317 oh my god please don’t remind me of this. i’ve done alright, though! i’ve got permanent mun, minmus, and duna colonies in my best save

That part count made my computer explode just watching it.
This was the first thing I saw when I got home. What a great way to unwind!
"We are going to reach Eve before this Decade is out"
Very complex and elegant ship, looking forward to seeing the rest of the mission next week!
Bring it to explore every planet in the kerbol system. Expand the ship with multiple landers
Matt: it’s as easy as docking landing on gilly
Me: can’t dock anything in space
Also me: ITS NOT
just learn how to burn retrograde to target
Matt: *asking for royalties for the dual cockpit design*
Me: *uses structural tube instead of fairing*
Matt: *surprised pikachu face*
I was literally thinking i could just to put the capsule upside down use an engine bay and put the ladder on the inside XD but yours works better.
A video... that I have been waiting for for so long...
If you pause at the right time around 19:10, something can be seen flying past the bottom right side of the screen. Is that just the Rhino stage, or has Matt filled his Kerbin orbit with so many probes that he nearly Kessler'd himself on screen?
"You're welcome to use an actual tool" like a protractor!
What do you think about something which is absolutely the contrary of what you usually do ? A Multi Launch Mun / Duna Station - as realistic as possible with KSP Stock Parts. No huge SSTOs, no weird locking stacked Rockets.
Its going to be hard i guess but i would love to see that from you once.
Matt Lowne: 2 Kerbals to Eve, 10,000 tonne launch mass.
Bradley Whistance: *_1 Kerbal to Eve, 9 tonne launch mass._*
See you in a week, Matt. I wanna binge for an hour.
I recently did my first orbital spacecraft assembly. Due to a lack of foresight, I had to send it to minmus instead of duna, as I had put too large a payload on it.
The purple artifact can be caused by PlanetShine in case you are using it
I was just thinking: man I need a Matt Lowne video.
1:50 Mat Lowne is a good person. no other UA-camrs do this.
dude, you make some awesome looking ships!
Hello from 2022. That rocket isn't SLS like, it actually flies.
I still cant believe you invented this game youre such a legend matt
Very cool . Thank you.
The ship looks so cool
kewl beans, having played this game years ago, i think pre 1.0 era, i've recently picked it back up after seeing ksp2 reveal trailers and the 1.8 update, so much has changed that my head is still spinning but the career mode is amazing to play, been chucking about 12 hours into it over the last 2 weekends, which is more than double what i usually spend gaming.
gorgeous ship
at about 7 minutes in, I was reminded that he is making another rocket, which I forgot already.
2:54 my video froze mid way through Matt saying cockpit. :))
Fun Facts rip
I love you matt! Best builder in ksp!
Looks awesome. Can't wait to see it cartwheel on aerobrake ;-) around some planet
I just realised that if you make a robotic arm with the actuators and rams and stick a grabber on it, your mining vessel can grab onto any other vessel and refuel it.
Even though it is an animated exercise he is demonstrating practical ideas which is where CAD of this type is most valuable
Hey Matt Lowne just have to say i love your videos i watch when a new come up, would be fun if you did a video how to build a stable rocket and how to make it stay in orbit and not falling down when it's in warp mode. agien thansk for your awsome ksp videos keep them up i rally love them ! mvh Hugo
The purple square is from planetshine
Yes! I've been wating all week! 1h isnt a problem Matt! But if it gives you more time to do the next weeks video it is fine!
Nice rocket and keep it up!!!
You make it look so easy. I'm trying to make a ship that can take off from Eve that is similar to your design but I just can't manage to get 8,000 dv out of it.
I've made a cute little Gilly Hopper with 2x RCS quads with thrust set very low, and instead of landing legs I use the small hinges and a few of the tiny cube frames. The stock landing legs bounce too much even with weak springs and dampers!
You should do a series where you fly subscribers rockets
Gilly landings although easy are certainly tedious.
It's just the highly eccentric orbit
Imagine that Matt it's a secret agent for nasa xd
Man you're very good and impressive
Keep it up
Sees when was the vid was uploaded*
5 minutes?
Yes, it's weird.
Mine was 9
I'm curious how you assemble in orbit using only what looks like docking port Sr. without the ship shaking itself apart once you start to accelerate. I can't seem to get around that when trying to build in orbit
This is the best thing to wake up to 🤩🤩
definitely.
I'm glad someone took my idea...
Really wish we just got the solid 1 hour plus. Would have sat down for the entire time.
4:05 yeah, procedural parts saves the making history set for me.

Matt: here, new video
The ship reminds me a bit of the Ultra Probe from the Space 1999 episode Dragon’s Domain.
love the radioactive isotope mark wattney reference
That is a beautiful rocket
I just imagine him playing off and doing something like this and when he's done just "That was Completely unnecessary but cool!"
love building timelapse
I would’ve watched the whole hour but this is fine too
I love this concept! Will you do more interplanetairy construction? Mothship like stuff is amazing
Love your vids
The asparagus setting has been done by JPL on their very first mission to send a rover to mars.
you know that no matter how long the video is we'll watch it
My first landing on Gilly:
I brought a small probe with a terrier, expecting gravity to be slightly lower than on Minmus. The probe also had RCS. I had to use the terrier at very low power. Then, I decided to do an experiment (after finishing the mission). The probe escaped Gilly with only RCS thrusters.
having a bottom heat shield only is ok because all of the mass is concentrated at the bottom of the heat shield, so aerodynamics dictate that it is not likely to tumble and flip. You just have to make sure the heat shield is on the side with more mass. Thats why you dont need 2 on kerbin, and you dont need 2 on eve either.
yesterday i returned from duna with starship wannabe version, on my way back i was left with 600 delta v, with this i managed to get into kerbin 85km orbit and land with help of some parachutes and engines, he called me a cheater that this is unposible... well thing is i learned to aeorbrake from Matt Lowne, and everything is posible :D D
KSP VIDEO YAYYYYYYYY
17:03: Jeb looks like he's carrying the Phantom Zone from Superman over to the other ship.
There was an update to Eve and I thought I saw an update to AVP, should be able to fix the clouds now. I know SVE is working as well.
Damn how tf do you make things like that? Your designs are amazing!
Wait are you the mod from the SFS discord server
TGPO GD yeah, how do people constantly find me
Another challenge!
Go anywhere but use the jettison heat shield function as decouplers
Easy!
The final ship is very pretty.
You can work as rocket technic!
Watching this in half speed has caused me to laugh my ass off for the last like 30 minutes. I definitely recommend.
Dude...wicked..
Nice mate.
love ur vids
Got a 40 tone space station around Duna orbit :)
As of today, it has been exactly 1 year since this vid was uploaded
Matt: "lOOk fORwArD tO nExT wEeEk gUyS"
Great to see U still doing KSP, Matt. Would U consider doing an English dub of your 3 KSP movies? Trying to follow the story AND read can B.....difficult at times.
Matt can you make a tutorial for the Joolian system?
I saw the discord message pop up and then immediately saw this pop up
Perfect rocket Matt! Now I can put 1 Kerbal inside the Eve lander, and take another one from the surface, you can fly back and forth with the ship, and actually save all of your Kerbals from the surface of Eve.
Also, I wanted to make this, but the rover can't get out of there. How do you get the rover to work on Eve?
Asymmetric SRB in real world helps push the rocket into its gravity turn. This helps increase the efficiency Thank you and I Love your videos
Oh snap! A build from Matt that needs an Ominus Dominus to use.... what if I change ONE thing technically it wouldn’t be this build 🤔😂
I was able to Kane a ship from orbital assembly. Tho I want to know any pointers when making one
what have you got plugins for buld? How do you rotate things?
I love orbital construction!
It just sucks that most KSP UA-camrs make their systems single launch, even their space stations.
What are those pink squares? 16:38, 17:02?
Glitches in his graphic mods.
@@TheRealFraston thanks
