- What's inside a GP-5 filter?
In this video I cut open a GP-5 filter to show you what is inside, a particulate filter containing asbestos, a divider section, activated charcoal pellets and a cotton wool layer to contain the charcoal.
Please do not cut open a GP-5 filter inside your house and follow rules for asbestos disposal.
There is also lots of shards of metal and paint dust that come loose when opening these filters.

I like the "straight to the point" way of you explaining things. No logo animation that lasts 20 seconds, no loud and obnoxious greetings, nothing out of the topic. You may record your stuff home in a room anything but tidy, but you give more info and give better explanations than many other people. You're pretty good at what you're doing.
Cheers
I agree. Man even got me into history and this type of stuff!

The absolute mad man
Yeah I would not recommend cutting a GP-5 filter open.
lol when I saw the can opener I thought... never seen that tactic 😂
you should burn the particle filter to see how much of the weave is actually asbestos, however, I would advise doing it outside in a well ventilated area
I'm keeping it safely triple bagged until I get a good electric microscope.
Weaponsandstuff93 could you burn it after doing that ? It would indeed be interesting to see how much asbestos in in there. Or open it and such.
Greetings from the netherlands my dude keep making great vids.

gret vid mate
I'm keeping it triple bagged for further inspection.
I would pay good money for someone to do that so I can wear my gp5 with a correct filter

Up to 10% of workers heavily exposed for at least 10 years die because of their exposure. I'm scared of the stuff personally, but it seems that the exposure here wouldnt even rate 0.1% of what people who got sick we're exposed to.
True but smaller amounts of asbestos can lead to other lung problems such as asbestosis, asthma, breathing difficulties etc.
So messing about with asbestos is never a smart idea.
@@Weaponsandstuff93 I agree. It's better safe than sorry. I wouldn't even stand next to it, but I guess that's perhaps irrational.
That a relief
filter 2 (after the charcoal filter) can be replaced with an air filter from parts of a new motor matic vehicle. then to be more sterile you can add a material coatings from the n95 mask as the third layer. so in order to be maintained, the mask is used only once in certain of emergency conditions (usually toxic gas). mask model can be made according your taste, but using the hose as a respirator connector is better because the filter can be replaced in many times.
honestly i have never made it but from the instructions of this video you can imagine the results later like what. thanks ☺️👌

I'll hopefully do one tomorrow.
You sir, have a lot more balls than I do. I hope you survived without inhaling any. This was a good video, thanks, although I do wonder why there was any asbestos at all in the paper section.
(On a side note, theoretically shouldnt the charcoal and cotton prevent any inhalation of the fibres?)
Because the Soviets mixed asbestos into the paper layer.
As for blocking the asbestos, depends on how small the fibres are that break off.
Aye, I know that, but why bother? There was so little asbestos it would be unable to really add anything to the filters potency, so it makes little sense to use/waste it on something so trivial.
And i had that a whole day on my face...im gonna die!
youre fucked up
is that what literally is in the canister

Thank you for doing this very instructive vidéo !
well this is nice to know my canister came in today
Burn the lower particle filter to see if there is abestos like u did with the eo14 filters
That’s would be a cool video
I don't want to make it disintegrate.
Weaponsandstuff93 fair enough
Great idea using a can opener to open the filter
Pretty easy way to do it.
Can openers worked like a charm...interesting
Only where you can actually open them.
Well done sir
The forbidden tuna
wow thats rlly intresting
I think the small shiny parts are actually asbestos, often in the filter plugs of my old GP5 filters theres a crystal like layer on it.
What small shiny parts?
Yes, small shiny parts froming a krystal like layer
I wont open the filters ever again cause im afraid this is pure asbestos
I think asbestos fibres are way too small to see.
What are the little silver strands on the particul filter it on the bottom cap on my filter
Any way to get dummy/gutted filters for reenactment purposes?
I find it hilarious you used a can opener to open that up.
You can take photos through a standard light microscope, even the micrscope you have, it is difficult to take photos through but you can do it.
...just incase you didn't know
I did but it's nearly impossible to get it focused correctly.
Ya I have been waiting
oh goodness
thanks for making this video but next time please wear gloves, the metal shards cold cut you and asbestos is likes to stick into your fingers (when new)
also, I haven't watched your videos in quite some time, but congrats on 64k (almost 65k) subscribers!
That was a nice watch you had on.
The Vostok?
Oh no way. I've got several Vostoks. What model is it?
Very interesting, great video

pmg eye holes are ideal for looking through binoculars/microscopes.
Or, you know, a half face mask.
Yeah but asbestos doesn't have magic powers, once the filter is open, as long as you don't shake it, the asbestos won't come loose.
Hopefully soon we can get some data for GP-7/PMK filters, assuming we don’t already. If that sort of info exists already, I’d like to know.
If someone can be bothered to pay for a testing fee.
Can you dissect a pro 2000 filter
I use a polish filter dark green and looks allmost identical as the GP5 filtr
what a mad man
He'd be opening that filter up like its a can of beans.
That's the easy way to do it.
To be honest the is the most smartest and clean way to open them, i seen of videos and they almost all destroy the particulate filter
Now I know why no charcoal coming out means no asbestos coming out O.O
Some Russian guy in his house with his GP-5: I'll put that in the chimney it's cold here...
The same guy in the hospital:
Doctor why do I have lung cancer???
forbidden tuna
there is something strangely funny about you using a generic can opener to open it up
may use some Half facial mask that blocks asbestos and gp5 or other one at the same time solve the problem?
That's why I had the mask on at the start, because gas mask filters block inhalation of dust.
soo. looks like we can just can open our gp-5 ripe out the particle filter. throw all the asbestos in the air while doing it. put a new and safe p3 filter in, hot glue it back together and done. a safe gp-5 filter.
Sounds reasonable and safe ( if you don't count the asbestos in the air
That's obviously a dumb idea.
Or just buy a GOST filter...such as modern russian filter or polish FP-5
Which gas mask has a safer filter cause I'm getting the vintage gas mask
What is the mask and filter your using to protect yourself?
With out rewatching the video think it was the 3M 7500 with p3 filters
I have cut open an ekastu a2b2e2k2p3 filter and it had like suspicious looking parts that like blocked the charcoal and were put between the activated carbon and the particulate filter it hab like long thick fibers there. Also the Particulate filter didnt burn it just smelt like plastic when I put the flame under it. The filter expired in 1992 but i dont know when it was made i think in like the 1970s. Do you know if there could be any asbestos inside ?
mans opens it with a can opener
Why didnt you do this outside?
Can I buy a new filter for my gp5
i watcht this vid with the Gp-5 on my face xD
Don't use the green filters though.

What pocket microscope do you recommend? Looks super handy tbh
You're braver than me! Were you parents okay with you doing this in the house?! And how will you dispose of it now?
I'm keeping it bagged, as I want to get an electric microscope to show what's actually in it.
Ah okay just bear in mind there is probably all kind of hoops you have to jump through to get rid of it when you're done.
I threw mine away lmao
is it corona proof?
There's a way to open the can without broken it?
Would a GP5 filter still be useful for safety uses after the particulate filtration section was removed?
If not, I could eventually remove the particulate filter and just put the GP5 back together for cosplay and skits. Correct?
Only against vapour but they are long since expired, I would not recommend opening them to gut them as that is far riskier.
I have heard that the filters contain a percentage of lead which can dissolve to inside the filter or something over time, or in the paint. Anyway either im curious about testing it with one of those lead tester things, i dont know how accurate those are but i guess they can give a general idea whether something has lead in or not. Not sure how much it will be able to detect, i have never used one.
Also im curious about the paint on the intake containing lead, which i doubt, but hey i wouldn't be surprised if it did.
As the filters also contain asbestos, best not to use it.
I've got a Tan Mask which looks like a GP-5 , And I've throw out the filter , i may of breathed into it about 100+ times , I'm not sure if the model of filter had asbestos , I'm wondering what model of mask and filter I have.
Probably just a discoloured GP-5.
Alright , thanks mate.
soviet design filter was good even for radiation cotamination why, becauze mask is in layers and in mask will come just steril air even now.... if filter is never used and kept dry.
do not wory about azbest , mask is in layers so add some fp3 filters in hoses and is fine, but use only sigiled filters only
So what if you take everything out and just leave the metal thing and wash it can you wear it then?
Yes but make sure you totally get all of it out
@@Weaponsandstuff93 both filters or only the first one because the seccond could be difficult
Is it the pleated material or the cardboard?
Could I cut my filter open take the asbestosis off of the other half and glue it back together and have my filter without it. And I want to have the filter on just without the asbestosis im not using it for gas just for cosplay
Thank's for your vidéo :D
No worries.
If I were to make my GP5 filter safe by cutting the bottom of the filter off and removing the asbestos-containing filter and sealing it in a bag, and doing all of this at the end of my street, would I be potentially putting everyone around in danger? Also do construction filter masks block asbestos?
Anybody in your house potentially. You need a P3/P100 filter to block asbestos.
Weaponsandstuff93 But what if I were to quickly dunk the cut-open asbestos-containing filter into some water? Would the asbestos go into the water or would it not stick or something. Because even though the person I’m buying the gas mask from says that the gp5 mask and filter are brand new and will work 100% I do not trust him and want to be safe.
Would you be able to take the Asbestos part off of the bottom and take out the charcoal/lead stuff and be able to have a cosplay filter?
Not really, that's just going to cause more problems.
If the paint on a soviet gp 5 filter is roumered to be lead based doesn't that mean the paint on the Gp-5 metal piece would have it too? If so, would it be a concern for the household air?
I'm pretty sure lead paint is only a risk when it breaks up and can be inhaled.
Weaponsandstuff93 Okay, thanks
