I’m such a newbie with all things sound and audio despite being a pianist for the past 27 yrs... COVID has made it necessary to have professional home studio recording capabilities and to be able to use technology to teach lessons and Zoom church!! Music Repo has been my GO TO for all help and I’d be lost without these tutorials! Thank you so much!
You ROCK! You saved my Zoom life thanks so much. It was awesome to talk with audio and sound merchandisers, and sound like I knew what I was talking about and wanted. Thanks again.
Absolutely brilliant, have been trying to sort this problem of playing my guitar over Zoom sounding like its out of phase/ slightly distorted for quite a while without any success, until by chance I found your video. Have spoken to various people who use Zoom, looked at various videos and also asked for an answer on a couple of websites and no one has come up with an answer. So a big thank you, as just tried it with your settings to my friend over Zoom and all nice and clear sounding, including my singing along at the same time! Many thanks again and must say your videos are some of the best out there, well presented and so easy to understand. Keep them going.
I wish I had seen this a few months ago. It's the easiest video to follow yet and it will likely improve the quality of our online Zoom music lessons. We are going to continue them through the month of September because parents are worried about the covid impact of their children returning to school. They don't want to add to their contact bubble yet with extra curricular contacts. It may well be a covid year of online instruction. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for a thorough easy to understand video on audio for Zoom. I watched 3 other videos and when I watched yours it was a victory!!! Glory to God!!!! Hallelujah I got sound coming from my piano keyboard, microphone and my M-Audio interface going into my laptop computer. Wow it only took me all day to get an understanding of how to use the Zoom meeting app. Thank you and may Jesus Christ pour out many blessings in your life!!! Amen!!!
Thanks so much for this post! It has been most life saving. I teach online movement classes for kids and my Audio Settings page in Zoom is a little different from yours. There is only an echo cancellation option in the advanced tap. Everything else is on the main audio tab. I’ll go over my settings in detail in case I should change anything: SPEAKER Audio Codec MICROPHONE Audio Codec Unchecked “Automatically adjust microphone volume” SUPPRESS BACKGROUND NOISE Chose “Low” (faint background sound). Or should I leave it in Auto? MUSIC AND PROFESSIONAL AUDIO Checked “Show in-meeting option to turn on original sound from microphone” Checked “High-fidelity music mode” Checked “Stereo Audio” I use a PYLE USB audio mixer and a Sokani Tiny wireless mic. I use a new MacBook Pro for Zoom and Spotify and an old Bose Mini Sound Link speakers. Everything works well except I can’t hear my students while I teach. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for looking into this with me!
You've given me another option to try after watching your video. Last night I tried my first Zoom /OBS lesson and the sound was very quiet and glitchy to my student. I also tried facetime on the Mac and that did the same thing. However, my iPhone worked. Thank You!
Thank you very much. The settings on your video update did the trick! My use is to zoom Dance/ballet exams to an examiner/s, sometimes on the other side of the planet. As you can imagine the music accompaniment must be just about perfect. I found the use of a mixer still makes it easier as well as having the music operated and played from a separate laptop or source. I tested with a technical person on the other side (+/- 20,000km away) , the time delay between music and voice (not latency), using a metronome with flashing light and could not see any delay. However, as you 've mentioned, the quality of the internet service/wifi is important and can be the killer. Resulting in frame dropping which becomes another problem. Luckily the video/sound sync stays aligned. Thank you again.
For. Fitness class you can also use “share” to play a music playlist that you and your classmates can all hear and work-out to - I think this is on pc version only “share” then “advanced” and click on “share music from this device” (going from memory here; something along these lines)
Many thanks for that! And yes, that is ideal if the music is ambient. However, if you want to sync movement to the music and your instruction then it doesn't work so well due to latency. You might also like this video for more info on how to sync music and movement in Zoom ua-cam.com/video/uM22_Jw2hqI/v-deo.html
Thanks a million. This video has worked wonders for me. I was struggling to get a good drum sound on Zoom and it was getting frustrating. I followed the instructions on this video and changed the settings on Zoom and the drums sound as natural as can be. It has really made it easy to conduct my classes online. Thank you once again.
I agree with everything you say here. One other item which applies solely to the host of the meeting is in the Settings section of the host's online account. Log in to the account, go to Settings and look for 'Allow users to select original sound in their client settings' (this used to be 'Show in-meeting option to Enable Original Sound from microphone' but they've just recently changed the descriptive text, presumably for clarity). This must be set on.
This is a very thorough video that I used to set up my Zoom client for Zoom meetings with a guitar jam group. I still had some issues with my mic audio as other Zoom meeting attendees heard it. There was a persistent crackle in the background much like the sound of crinkling cellopane. Following Focusrite's Tech support, I set the Sample Rate to 48 KHZ and the Buffer Size to 192 KHZ which got rid of the background noise. I just wanted to mention this in case someone else is using a Focusrite Scarlett like "Music Repo" is using in this video. (I'm usinging the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd generation.)
This is the first tutorial on Zoom that I actually understood, thank you for your clarity. (From a nervous piano teacher about to undertake online lessons.)
Wow, you have come quite far. I remember the last time we corrosponded in 2015 when you were just begining and I had bought a blue snowball. Good for you. Keep up the quality content. Side note - I watched your video the 1st time since then.
Thank you, June, and you have my likes and support. We are in the planning stages of doing a concert online in honour of my friend who passed away much too early. He had many friends and he is unique. You may notice that I always keep him in the present tense because to me, he is here. He is a singer and he is missed by everyone. When the concert is done, I will share it with you and others. Your technical prowess is what I needed. In the past, I did a lot of mixing in the analog era, so I am now back researching what I need to do this right; mixing boards, equalizers, streaming, and editing software, the proper mics to get the best sound, etc. So I will be following you and encouraging many others to do the same. It's been a long time since I got back to my very first and enduing love - music. I'm at a stage of rediscovery, and if COVID19 did anything, it made me re-evaluate my life, and implant that life is indeed short, that being too busy to enjoy life is an excuse, and it truly is love and passion that bring others real joy and true meaning. I don't often write on posts, yet the urge was there to do this. Thank you for your professionalism and knowledge which I am certain has inspired many others. Thank you again. I just began following you on Facebook and Twitter as well. :)
OMG I wish I saw this 2 weeks ago!! I ran on a lot of trouble shooting with different conference software and ways to stream video content that needed to have EXCELLENT audio quality. Great video!!
This video is awesome! I am a new online music teacher using zoom too, and you're right, there's a lot of settings I didn't know yet, I'll keep in touch with you for updates. Keep safe!
Oops. Everything sounded great in rehearsal but the crackling came back when I had 50 people in the room. Back to the drawing board. I need to find the right input/output on my Focusrite. I'm using a loopback through the SPDIF to get PC sound to send. My mic, on input 6 (returning from a mic processor), outputs through the SPDIF as well. The trouble is when I turn off the Zoom speaker setting, I don't hear PC audio or participants. Once I solve that I think I'll be golden. I have a Scarlett 18i20, btw. Thanks in advance if you choose to assist.
Hi, thanks for your comment. You can end up with your students hearing your voice in one ear, your instrument in the other using the stereo option, it depends on your interface etc but definitely something worth experimenting with ...
@@MusicRepo no I am not taking about that, if I am giving a audio production class or mixing class... then when I enable the stereo option, my students can hear that same stereo mix in real time and whatever panning and changes that I do they can feel it
Greetings! I have a question - very much hope you can answer. I have an interface, works great. I just bought a new Yamaha Mixer MG10XUF - which has a USB connection. Is there an advantage to this chain (Yamaha->Intefrace->Computer) over this one (Yamaha->Computer)? Of course for recording I'd use an interface, but should I use it for ZOOM? Thank you!
Hi, I'd compare the specs of the interface Vs mixer you may get higher quality taking balanced line out of mixer into interface balanced line ins... Just try it all out. Using the mixer alone will be simpler, especially with Zoom etc. I don't think there's a right answer here, you want to get a setup that works well for you.
@@MusicRepo Thnk you! Yesterday for a zoom chat I did use mixer alone. The newer Yamaha mixers have a nice usb connection so one can feed audio out and get audio in on different tracks. I was able to get 2 tracks out and hear everyone as well. 😀
Excellent tips...online teleconferencing tech is so highly optimized for the speaking human voice (like cellular tech), this is great info. My students and I thank you!
Thank you for this very clear presentation. I have been looking everywhere to find out the best way my school can offer Performing Arts classes via Zoom. I can’t tell you how helpful this is.
As I understand it, Zoom has problems with lag. That means that it might be difficult to use Zoom to get a bunch of remote singers/performers on the beat all at the same time. I've heard that JamKazam handles lag better. But I'm still learning.
Nicely put! I teach live looping, among other things, and I've worked out a way to run the audio from Zoom through my mixer so I can loop audio from participants and it doesn't feedback, weirdly. Of course, there's transmission lag and latency involved, so you have to adjust for that.
@@MusicRepo It's actually a little weird that it works. I'm using a Zoom H5 as my interface. I run the line out of the H5 into a channel of my mixer and I have my vocal mic running into another channel. I have the right output of the mixer going to my looper and run that back into an aux channel of the mixer, which is panned left. The left output of the mixer goes to an input of the H5. This means that by panning right or left on the mixer input channels, I can choose whether they're looped or not. The level of the aux channel is set carefully so it's in parity with the non-looped path. This set up took me a while to come up with. But it works! And doesn't feedback, even though one might think it should. And the person on the other end of the call doesn't hear an echo of themselves. It does help to pan off looping for anything that you aren't looping at any moment.
Thanks for sharing. Appreciated very much. What an amazing job you've done! To be honest with you, I'm not English educated and limited in some English vocabulary and usage, yet I could understand 98% of your explanation without even needed to look it up on a dictionary. Your demostration and explanation is simple and easy enough to understand and follow. I like the way you communicate, no unnecessary, extra content or long winded sharing without much help at all. Everything is solely focused on vital and practical understanding with very useful instructions and demonstrations. Awecome teaching and communication skills. Keep up the good work. God bless and take care:)
Thanks a lot . In this video you don’t talk about playing music for fitness class at the same time that the teacher is speaking. And how to adjust the sound level of those two . I would love it if you could do a demo on that . 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for this clear explanation. I would like to ask you something about the Audio settings for my particular situation. I teach Qigong through Zoom and in the room at the same time. I have music playing in the room and would like that the Zoom-participants could hear both my voice and the music playing in the room (so it's not about SHARING the music through Zoom). I use microfoon Rode Wireless Go II + Lavalier Go and a Sonny box for the output. I do not use a mixing panel like you mention. Moreover, wWhen I use this micro for recording videos through my mobile, it does send both my voice and the music playing in the room, so I know the microphone can do this. But on Zoom the music does not go through. I assume it's because of the Audio settings. Do you know which settings do I need? Thank you very much for your answer. Fina Ramos
Hi I'm Steven Harris, and I just watched your video in whiched I was very inspired! I am a profession collaborative musician who is wanting to get back into playing together live by using Zoom! Now I work as a piano accompanist/coach and other collaborative playing work in and on the outside of tbe schools. But since the pandemic, I have not been able to do any live group performing. For my university jobs I've been recording my accompaniments with music notation software and converting them from midi to an audio file then sending them off to my students for their performances and lessons with their professors! So that is all I have been doing since! But I want to start having access to live music networking, but don't have all the right equipment! Although I have the free version installed on my ipad, but I need that to use Forscore ( an app for digital sheet music stand). I also have it installed on my Samsung Galaxy phone, but that just isn't good enough! I would want to know specifically what all equiptment I must get and what all to avoid getting as far as what you recommend such as, app version, microphone, interface, computer, computer operating system, etc! My gmail: Normanjazz5@gmail.com
Zoom is not the right platform for live collaborative work. Here are a few links that might help: Here is a good starting point: Looks at whether online band practice is possible, and some of the gear you need (affiliate link to Sweetwater) imp.i114863.net/live-jam And here are some links to Live Jamming Platforms. Each has its own guidance on set up and usage Try Jamulus (open source) llcon.sourceforge.net/ or Jamkazam www.jamkazam.com/ or Ninjam (open source) www.cockos.com/ninjam/
This was very helpful. Cannot wait to test it out with my online zoom group sessions. Any insights into ways to legally use copyrighted popular music or really good royalty free music.
Another technique is to have a DAW open, arm a track with the input from your USB interface and set it to echo input, then in Zoom use Share Screen, Advanced Share, Share Computer Sound only. This bypasses the Zoom compression techniques while allowing your microphone to have the sometimes helpful noise suppression and other filters.
Thank you so much! You just saved my dance classes! Tried your tips and the sounds comes out amazing! Wish I had seen this video before, but better now than never! Thank you!
Thanks for this. I have been running a Zoom music sharing group and gave out the same advice for our Mac/PC users. I did not however, know about the ability to turn Original Sound on for mobile phones. That will be VERY helpful as the mobile users typically have pretty bad sound and really, who can get an affordable webcam so they can use their computer? One gentleman was signing in twice--audio via his PC and video via his smartphone. Anyway--great video, very clear and succinct!
Thank you !! Although I managed to struggle through getting the settings sorted out on Zoom myself last week to teach my students I have to say that, I can across your video and after watching it I had to say, It is so well made, very clear concise and to the point. I will definitely be sharing it. Thank you again and keep up the great work.
Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. This is one of the most informative videos on a technical subject I have seen in a long time. Our band is getting antsy as we have not been able to jam or play together for some time now. We have bantered around the idea of having a Zoom jam, but keep coming up with "what ifs' and other possible problems before we even try. Haven't tried your steps yet as I've just watched the video, but if the accuracy of your instructions are up to the same quality as your presentation, I'm confident that we have the answer we were looking for. I'll report back after we give it a good go. Thanks again.
Only just found your channel! Apologies! I did find some of the terminology a little difficult (me being a bit of a dinosaur!) but I'm sure I will get it after watching it a couple of times - this is what might be difficult for a couple of mates who I want to jam with? Wish I'd found this channel weeks ago!
Thank you for the video very helpful. I am on a Mac Book Pro and I also downloaded a digital app called Sound Source. My question is what is the difference between selecting Mulit-Output device vs. Zoom Audio Device in the Audio Settings?
Thank you so much for this! My remote students were struggling during our drum circle lesson (I had in-person students drumming), and I'm hoping this will make a difference now!

Fina Ramos
Game changer... Excellent video and thanks for sharing.
My son has a Zoom piano recital next week. Thanks for the Zoom tips!
Awesome ... hope it goes well
You did a fantastic job!
Awesome video! Very helpful information.
Glad you think so!

Zoom is not the right platform for live collaborative work. Here are a few links that might help:
Here is a good starting point: Looks at whether online band practice is possible, and some of the gear you need (affiliate link to Sweetwater)

And here are some links to Live Jamming Platforms. Each has its own guidance on set up and usage
Try Jamulus (open source)

or Jamkazam

or Ninjam (open source)

Thanks. Have you tried audiomovers.com ?
I haven't tried it, though I have seen some interesting tutorials on it. Worth experimenting with ...
Excellent review of tips for audio, thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic video - thank you very much!
This was very helpful. Cannot wait to test it out with my online zoom group sessions. Any insights into ways to legally use copyrighted popular music or really good royalty free music.
Great thanks - really useful😊
Great Job! Thanks!!!
Helpful reminder - thank you :)
Thank you!
Thanks so much. Easy to follow and it made a difference.
Glad it helped!
Glad it helped! Thanks!
Thank you for thsi great Video. It helped me a lot!
Thanks so much for this video!
THANK YOU Repo
Thank you !! Although I managed to struggle through getting the settings sorted out on Zoom myself last week to teach my students I have to say that, I can across your video and after watching it I had to say, It is so well made, very clear concise and to the point. I will definitely be sharing it.
Thank you again and keep up the great work.
Glad it helped!
JamKazam is a good shot for jamming as well. The interface is really bad but I got it working with a friend and the latency is hardly noticeable
This is super helpflul and explained so much, clearly and concisely. Thank you so much!
Only just found your channel! Apologies! I did find some of the terminology a little difficult (me being a bit of a dinosaur!) but I'm sure I will get it after watching it a couple of times - this is what might be difficult for a couple of mates who I want to jam with? Wish I'd found this channel weeks ago!
excellent video ...thanks a lot for sharing !!
thanks for this video, a question, what screen capture software do you use? thank you
I use Camtasia. For all my video editing
@@MusicRepo thank you and congratulations again for your videos

Great video! I've been struggling with these details. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Mil millones de gracias! Saludos desde la Patagonia Argentina.
Very informative. Great job!
Thank you for the video very helpful. I am on a Mac Book Pro and I also downloaded a digital app called Sound Source. My question is what is the difference between selecting Mulit-Output device vs. Zoom Audio Device in the Audio Settings?
This helped me out a bunch, thank you. Thumbs up and I subscribed. :)
Excellent. Thank you! So clear.
Very helpful, thank you!
Super instructional graphics (arrows and circles)!
Thank you, very good presentation! Do you have tips for optimizing sound on FB Live?
This video came up on my feed. It is really excellent ua-cam.com/video/VQMouXOlXpo/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing your information
You were very kind in showing how to slow down your music on Audacity. Can you please show me how to do my own recordings please? Is it possible?
Thank you so much for this! My remote students were struggling during our drum circle lesson (I had in-person students drumming), and I'm hoping this will make a difference now!
How did it go
