She definitely dispensed with a lot of the trendy advice about lighting given by videographers that thrive from their UA-cam subscribers as much as from project clients. I especially like the non-judgmental, matter of fact advice about composing yourself and being aware of bad habits many people aren't even aware they do, especially the touchy touchy stuff. I've had a few video and graphics clients who were in hospitality - owners and managers - and they don't even know that they constantly do that 'thing' about putting a finger on their lip to wet it so they can pick up menus for arriving patrons. All. The. Time. OMFG!!!!

@It's Okay It's okay (see what I did there) to put on makeup or get botox or dye your hair. It's okay to shave your legs or tattoo your eyebrows or wax your mustache. @It's Okay I think I hear what you're saying. But aging well doesn't have to mean wearing no makeup and leaving your hair in a flop. After all, most of the women in their 20s and 30s who have "beauty vlogs" aren't going "au natural, " either, right? They're putting effort into their appearance to. So she's not doing anything any other female vlogger isn't already doing. That's how I see it.
I had a zoom interview this week with a company where I am old enough to be everyone's mom. I watched your video and it made a HUGE difference in how I looked on camera - in regards to lighting, computer position, and background. All was great advice and I felt much more confident. (and then the camera didn't work. lol) But now I know the drill for next time.
Can I also add - people need to become acquainted with the “mute” and “turn off video” functions. A person should be muted unless it is relaxed environment, meeting with friends, etc. If it is an actual business meeting, if the host doesn’t mute everyone automatically, please mute yourselves. I was on a call the other evening and someone was moving around, shuffling papers and their laptop, talking to their spouse, etc, after they entered the meeting late. It was very distracting. And if you need to get up or someone comes in and you need to take your attention to them, either move your built in camera slider (if you have one) to black out your video, or click the three dots in the top right of your box and disable your video. Just some little hints that are Zoom etiquette, and make the meeting more enjoyable (or at least tolerable -lol) for others. Thanks for the awesome video, Angie!

Excellent suggestions! Thanks much for NOT making a 10 minute introduction for a 15 minute video. You got to the points, made them, and then ended. VERY WELL DONE, AND MUCH APPRECIATED!

Lucie Desjardins Did you try what she said over here on this video? Do you still wear makeups because what i can see here you are already a beautiful woman
What a lovely woman, not afraid to show her self with bad lighting , bad positions. Sharing great tips and showing also how to speak and hold your attention without blabbing and going on too long!
Perfect timing for this video! I did a test run Zoom video today with my book club. It worked very well. I put makeup on for the first time in a while having been at home like most others. Was not happy with how I looked on screen sitting in my bay window in full sunshine! Even though I'm not using this for work purposes, we all want to look our best if we can. So thank you Angie for all the tips for position and lighting for our next book club meeting. Stay safe and stay home (if you are able).
I miss my book club! Might be time to get the band back together! Bright direct sun is worse than no light... it casts the darkest shadows. Soft indirect light is best!! xo ~a.
This is PERFECT timing!!! Tomorrow evening, I'll be on my very first Zoom with 2 girlfriends (one in Colorado and one in Texas). I'm in Louisiana. We use to work together years ago and are still super close. I ALSO appreciate your makeup tips because I'm much older than they are (I'm 62) and I need to look alert and healthy so they won't worry about me! haha! Thanks so much for your tips!
This is so helpful, Angie. My family has informed me that they would like to face time. I am in my late 70's and have been dreading it. Your tips should help me be more recognizable, and give me more confidence so that I can forget about how I look, and just enjoy my grand children, my children, and my siblings. Thank you so much!
Bonnie my mam is 76yrs and we got her a spare iPhone so she was able to FaceTime the whole family individually. At first she was very apprehensive as she not used to any technology . She is now a Great grandma and the FaceTime has changed her/our life in this corona madness .❤️ Go for it good luck
Bonnie my grandmother was worried at first, saying she didn’t look ready. She didn’t know very much about camera angles, but I was so glad she figured out how to videocall that I didn’t mind looking up her nose sometimes 😍
Ms. Bonnie, I understand how you feel (I'm 44 and expecting my first grandson, but I hate being on camera or taking pictures, period). If it makes you more comfortable and confident to have these tips, that's wonderful! But I promise you, your family just wants to see your sweet face and they aren't thinking about how you look! How I wish I could see my Grammy 😢 Happy Easter! 🐰🐇🙏💗
lordy this is the channel i didn’t know i needed THANK YOU. adjusting my makeup habits and techniques from 30 to 50 was just a COMPLETE mystery. my hero.
Thanks for the video. I'm about to start recording on UA-cam. I'm 73 and I don't look a day over 80, especially with the wrong lighting , camera angle and position. Image is important and I don't look too bad using your advice.
This has been extremely helpful. Before quarantine I hadn’t even hear of Zoom. Now we have almost daily meeting with school, friends, work. Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work and stay healthy!
This is brilliant, Angie! I am a professional photographer and you did a great job explaining! One more tip, if you have sheer curtains, use them as they tend to soften the environment light.
Thank you very much sister, just today(30th May, 2021) we had a SOCIAL CERVICE zoom meeting for 2 hours. We had 14 participants out of 60. 46 friends could not join the meeting because they know nothing about ZOOM meeting, but unknowingly I could managed my appearance in Zoom Frame almost 90% according to your zoom tips. Our 13 friends also have no ideas about Zoom meeting. If you give them marks, they all will fail. Our 2nd Zoom meeting will be on 11th June, Friday, but this Zoom meeting will be great, because I will show them your video. God bless you!!!
Lighting is EVERYTHING. Carravagio, great master artists, established this hundreds of years ago. Thanks for the reminder. Lighting still applies to modern beauty.
This video is perfect!!! I have been in my company 22 years and tomorrow I have my first virtual interview with some clients for a new position. These tips were incredibly helpful and very much appreciated!!!!!
It's very funny that we've come to this, but I'm so glad there are people like you who can help with all of our ZOOM meetings! I've taken all your advice and feel much more confident. Thanks & Happy Easter!
This explains why I looked so great during my meeting today. I sat in front of a sunny window with white sheer curtains. Camera was slightly above me cause I had to take notes and be hands free. Great vid. Very timely.
Angie's suggestions were great and helped me think about my home office setup in a different way. I am new to working remotely so am just now figuring out video calls, etc. I was trying not to purchase any new equipment but given that I am using a home office in our basement with very little natural light I finally gave in and purchased the ring light Angie recommended. What a game changer! This light is great - lighting is everything and I cannot believe the great difference it makes. With this light I don't feel like I need to wear as much makeup either (I am 51 years old and am just wearing a tinted primer, lip gloss, mascara, little blush and feel pretty confident Zooming while using the light). Thanks Angie for the great tips.
Exactly what I needed!! I just moved across the country from the SF Bay Area the northeastern midwest - everything is different here, and the completely unpredictable weather and lighting are no exception, lol. I am in the middle of remodeling the house and I currently have my computer set up in my bedroom as we work on the office! I was panicked when I needed to set up for zoom meetings with clients! It's not ideal, but with your help I can make it work! I'm also 47, so tips coming from another mature woman are appreciated! I avoid video calling because I look terrible, and don't like revealing that to friends and family! Your tips have already helped a lot! Thank you! Patricia
Just wanted to thank you for these timely tips. I'm a Realtor doing my best to work from home and not lose my income :) and keep helping people. I need to look professional when i'm video chatting with clients and on committee zoom meetings. And i'm finally getting videos made to promote my business - your lighting tips were spot on! Even though i do a lot of interior photography for homes, i don't really have the background for video lighting people - which is a completely different situation, especially for 'self portraits'! Your tips made this really easy. I did a video call with a seller a couple days ago - actually felt much more confident because of your tips. And i got the listing :). Thank You!
If you have a messy space, set Zoom to give you a different background. The controls are on the bottom left and you can change to anything you want - like a beach scene or something more professional!
Just be aware to stay well forward and quite still if you use one of these backgrounds. Otherwise, parts (and all) of you will ‘disappear’ as you move, like a dated Dr Who special effect.
Excellent presentation. I am going to have my first zoom in 2 days time with a production company, the above tutorial has helped me immensely. I have now subscribe to your channel and look forward to continuing learning and developing my "technique". Thank you for your professionalism and the clarity in which you have delivered the above tutorial. Bea
Angie, I have allowed myself to binge watch your videos while on "lock down." It has been SO great. And now this amazingly helpful and timely video! You are the best!!!!! Keep doing what you are doing. We need more common sense people like you!

I had to pause when you said “I’m 57”. I was like.... wait... what? ... How!? It’s my first time watching one of your videos and it’s usually long time vegans that I see looking so much younger than their age... You’re obviously very good at what you’re doing! Bravo!
Angie, as a professional photographer/videographer your tips were spot on. A tip I use often is cut pieces of an old shower curtain to drape over or in front of your light source. This acts as a poor persons diffuser and will soften light if it's too harsh. A large square of black felt can be placed on your desk or near the surface of your light source to kill reflected light that may make your skin look washed out. If you buy a dimmer switch from the hardware store to put between your lights plug and the wall socket you can adjust the lights brightness. Lastly, your video looks really professional but you never showed us the setup you use for the actual money shot - Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks, beautiful video.
Great tips. I would add, concerning camera angles, keep the tilt angle subtle. Looking up, or, looking down, more than just a little, can transmit a subordinate, or, a dominate mental image. Think of it as either looking down your nose at someone, or looking up to someone. It's a subconscious thing, but, it could very well affect the way others in the meeting perceive you. For business type meetings, especially, this can be a factor.
Absolutely! And remember - look at the camera! If you look at the people's faces on the screen all the time, you can come across as unconfident, shy, untrustworthy, disinterested, or arrogant, domineering and dismissive.
Something tells me that you never look bad on camera or anything 😁 people seem to catch me without make or on puffy eye day hahaha And I’m 54 in April. I’m a little younger than you. You don’t seem to show your age at all. You look younger than 40 somethings. You seem very photogenic. No matter your lighting you look pretty. Be blessed and stay healthy!
Honestly these are the best tips I’ve seen in a video of this kind. So practical and easy to understand. The mug and testing lighting with your phone first are genius!!
Thank you!.. This video is very useful for people like me working from home now, due to the coronavirus. I work in an office and never before had to think about attending meetings through videos.
Thank you for these tips. I have a lot of FaceTime calls with my grandson. I’m appalled at how old I look, extra chins and all. 73 should not look this bad. First of all, I will definitely hold the phone higher to hide the chins, touch up the makeup and hair and sit up straight instead of slouching on the couch. I took a class on Skype, sitting at my table, I admit I looked better sitting there, probably better light and background. Thank you for these tips.
Oh my gosh. Thank you! I'm a teacher and we are doing zoom meetings. I have lines around my mouth that I've never noticed. It's because I'm looking down.
My husband and I create chocolate bonbons, and we took a masterclass in how to use a melange last week. Before the zoom meeting, I set up the camera, lights and everything else that you recommend. The class went well and we learned a lot. Later that week, the teacher told his audience in a live chat about the amazingly handsome people he had a lesson with a few days ago. I've never heard that teacher say anything like that! And he talked about it several times during the live chat. Because he was in shock! "It was like talking to two world-famous supermodels. They looked like they came from a fashion book," was his comment. This is what I will live on, for a long time! Thanks, Angie! Through your tips, you really helped us get the best out of both me and my husband ❤️
@@AngieHotandFlashy yes! And a bit shocking. And fun. And it feels good. Think, I have only looked at three of your videos so far. So what will happen when I've seen them all!? ;-) Again, thank you.
That was such a great tip. I know we are all a bit (or a lot) self conscious on camera, but staring off feels much the same on the other side of camera as it does in person. I may go so far as to put a post it or something behind the sweet spot of the camera so I don't appear rude to the other people on the call.
THANK YOU!!! I am still working and I’m now on more meetings now than I’ve had in my last year total! These video calls are making me look like the crypt keeper!!! And I have to say I’m bad about the hoodie thing.... my immediate coworkers get hoodie bun head me, and my bosses, VP’s,, clients and up get curled hair, nice shirt and makeup 💄!
This was so helpful. Thank you. I’m a teacher having to teach from home and suddenly doing it on zoom and having this info is such a help since I have no idea how to do any of this.
This is really helpful. Because of Covid, I have Zoom meeting with a recruitment agency and I want to make a good impression! Good work. Oh, you look great.
Tina Larkin good luck with the interviews. Some other Tips for during the call you may find helpful. When talking - Project your voice and pause, when listening- nod and smile, make eye contact to show you are listening, share your appreciation at the end of the call.
Definitely watched this video on my first interview on zoom. Thanks for great tips! Omg. You don't look your age. I woulda guessed WAY lower. Hm. I just realized even tho I'm in mid 20's I would not mind dating older. Learned something new today about myself.
Thanks, great tips! I’m 52 & on Zoom 6 days a week. Many days, do not feel like wearing any makeup. Started putting light eye makeup & lipstick lately. 😎☺️
A very honest, well thought out presentation. I'm going to share this with my wife who has been doing a lot of Zoom meetings from home lately. By the way, I always tend to believe those that lead by example. Keep up the good work Angie!
This was a great video! I am a case manager (CPRS) and work from home now, so I’m on Zoom mtgs at least 3 times per day. So glad I found this specific video!! ❤
I feel like the events of, for me, this whole year so far are all showing on my face, so this is timely, if just for the occasional selfie. I am working from home now, and very thankful for all of the skincare I have accumulated. It helps me feel better if I look a little bit better, even if it's just in the mirror, when washing my hands! Thank you Angie, stay healthy!
This lockdown has forced me to take my organic bone broth daily. I can see a difference already. I use the powder form and mix it with instant miso soup.
@@sandrar6670 I've never heard of bone broth. What differences have you seen? I just read a little bit about it after reading your comment. It contains collagen? Thanks.
MsKala88 my skin looks plumper. I also take collagen hydrosolate powder. I’ve been putting it in my coffee for almost ten years. Look into phytoceramides. I’ve been taking those too for about five years.
I'm glad collagen was mentioned here. I have been using it for 3 years now, but in the recent weeks, had not remembered to fill up my smaller container, and simply hadn't been using it. I am remedying that right away! I had started with bone broth, which really is a helpful and healing thing, but moved to collagen because it is easier, both for storage and for use. Bone broth is wonderful, but having a cup of broth every day isn't always desirable, particularly in the summer, we're College in can be mixed into pretty much any non carbonated beverage. But both collagen and bone broth are wonderful for the skin, the joints, and just general overall good health. I will also recommend trying the phytoceramides. They help moisturize from the inside out.
These are great tips - the ones that make the biggest difference are audio, lighting, angle of the camera to one's face and looking into the camera lens when speaking. Brilliant!
For zoom:on the settings tab(the gear icon) you can add a virtual or live background so your background is always neat or beautiful.Wasnt sure if anyone mentioned this. Thanks, great video
It's amazing how many people just open their laptop screen, have it angled back and then you end up looking right up their nose when you see them on video. Boxes aren't that hard to find around the house. Heck a cookie tin works too.
I teach online and have lots of Zoom/webex/Hangouts meetings, these are great tips because (a) I'm not photogenic and (b) can't wear make-up, I'm allergic to everything. Appreciate the tips on lighting and looking up, which are things anyone can do.
Angie you are AWESOME!!! Thank you so much for this video! I'm glad I accidentally ran across your video. I followed your tips and it landed me a second interview!!!!!!
Angie, as you contemplate gray dating, you will probably be doing some video chats prior to an actual date. This video is so helpful , whether for business or personal use.

Gorgeous at 57... You look great! I just turned 40,,,I do look younger for my age. It's genetics. However, I look horrible on Zoom, Facetime, Microsoft teams, etc. I'm definitely going to follow all of your suggestions. Thank you for this... :)

@ Bonnie I do relate to what you are saying!
Grandmas have the most beautiful and comforting face of all. I remember her with ❤️ always . Wrinkles and all. 😢 🥰
lordy this is the channel i didn’t know i needed THANK YOU. adjusting my makeup habits and techniques from 30 to 50 was just a COMPLETE mystery. my hero.
Angie, I found you through the closed FB group Moms & Ladies of SW Houston. It's refreshing to get tips from a seasoned woman - not a child. Go Girl!
I just love how classy you are and the way you carry yourself.
Thanks so much!
@Xixius. But the OP had some really nice, complimentary words for her.
Also guys there is a 'face touch up' feature in zoom. It's very subtle so it's not like you have a major filter on, but I always have it checked.
excllent tip
Mine doesn't have this feature. 😭
I had no idea! Thank you.
Alpha Leonis Thank you!
@@l.mack89 It is under either General settings or Video settings. Everyone has it.
Thanks for the video. I'm about to start recording on UA-cam. I'm 73 and I don't look a day over 80, especially with the wrong lighting , camera angle and position. Image is important and I don't look too bad using your advice.
I've subscribed!!
Great tip!
Looking up in the camera is so much more important than people realise! I teach a class of 50 odd students and the nose view is real!
How are you
You never ever look 57. Well done!!! You are my inspiration.
I have tried your tips and a coworker took a screenshot of our zoom meeting and noticed
how wonderful my 'box' was. Great lighting, angle, make-up...
Hello Rosa
The lighting tip was the best one that most people haven't figured out yet.
I am a 64 year old man and found this very helpful.
I'm about to lead a webinar in 3 days for the first time. This was perfect and super helpful! Thanks.
I went on my first Zoom call a few days ago and was horrified. I have more coming up and really appreciate this timely advice!
What a service you have done for those who need to work from home . So thorough , thoughtful and beautifully presented dear Angie ! Be well ❤️! Pam
Thanks so much Pam! Hope you're well.
I agree! And I love your window bench!
I agree. I am Zooming with my students - I have 95 of them. Her suggestions certainly helped.
So when she said 'if you haven't washed your hair for a few days' I knew that I was in her target audience.
Saaaaame
LOL!!!!! Right???
That’s funny
Lmaooooooooooo
😆
Ha, I love this. Been forced to have many of these meetings and I get a glimpse of myself and think dear lord, is that really me?
Lighting is EVERYTHING. Carravagio, great master artists, established this hundreds of years ago. Thanks for the reminder. Lighting still applies to modern beauty.
So true!
"Photography" means "painting with light", and without light, there's no photography (other than infrared).
@@usernamemykel technically it means drawing with light.
@@terri-lynnmccormick731
More technically, "writing with light". Look up the origin of "graph", then how it's used in "photography".
Excellent tips, Angie. I’m a professional filmmaker, but I love how you simplify instructions for the non-professional. 😉
What ring light did you purchase?
Thank you! Patricia
I really appreciate your content. I"m 45 and I feel like you're answering my questions before I ask them!
Thank You!
Hello Lea, I hope you are safe in this pandemics, Sending love your way x
If you have a messy space, set Zoom to give you a different background. The controls are on the bottom left and you can change to anything you want - like a beach scene or something more professional!
I didn't know that. thanks!
Nice tip. Thank you.
Yes, I use the Washington DC background. More professional
Just be aware to stay well forward and quite still if you use one of these backgrounds. Otherwise, parts (and all) of you will ‘disappear’ as you move, like a dated Dr Who special effect.
I find those backgrounds incredibly distracting.
Alas, for me, the most flattering light is to be found in the darkest of closets.
The Artful Dodger smile more. A good heart shines past the details.
This must be the timeliest video ever. Angie, you broke the internet, congrats!
Cathy S Did you try what she said over here on this video?
Hello beautiful, It will be nice to take you out for coffee someday. You seem like a nice person. I was browsing through when I stumbled into your page. I can't seem to send you a friend request on my end so I decided to leave a comment here. Can you send me a friend request? It will be nice to meet a new friend like you. I have no bad intentions towards us being friends my dear. Thank you
That distraction of starting into other parts of the screen and not into the camera is very real. Your tips are excellent! Thank you!
Also learned I have to clean my glasses before a call. Dirty glasses really stand out.
Hi Kevin never thought of that!!! Good idea😀
Totally agree. Slimy glasses, whether justified or not, imply slimy personal hygiene.
right I noticed that
What was the beverage in the glasses?
Good tip, thanks!
I put on a face mask during Zoom, it’s the most effective and quickest setup before the meeting starts trust me.
I'm 34 years old and doing an hour presentation in a few hours on Zoom for my Nurse Practitioner class. Thankful for your video.
The coffee cup trick is great! It tilts the phone down on the bottom slightly and made me go from gargoyle to human.
This video is responsible for helping me get an amazing new job! A must watch. Best YT content.
congratulations on your new job!
I had to pause when you said “I’m 57”. I was like.... wait... what? ... How!?
It’s my first time watching one of your videos and it’s usually long time vegans that I see looking so much younger than their age...
You’re obviously very good at what you’re doing! Bravo!
Carine she looks like she’s in her 60’s..
Hella Bella I disagree.
I think she looks very good and much younger. But also very botoxed.
@@hellabella8295 I disagree too! She looks amazing and based on your non photo, I believe you are feeling insecure and I feel sorry for you
I thought she was way younger
This was so helpful! I have spent the last 3 weeks looking like my mother on Zoom! I love my mom, but I don't want to look 72 when I'm 51!!
Hello Linda, I hope you are safe in this pandemics sending love and light x
Oh my gosh. Thank you! I'm a teacher and we are doing zoom meetings. I have lines around my mouth that I've never noticed. It's because I'm looking down.
Same!! Smile and it makes you look so much better!!
That's awesome!!
@@AngieHotandFlashy yes! And a bit shocking. And fun. And it feels good. Think, I have only looked at three of your videos so far. So what will happen when I've seen them all!? ;-) Again, thank you.
Me: Staring at myself in a zoom meeting to make sure no one sees me look bad.
Literally everyone else: Doing the exact same thing
That was such a great tip. I know we are all a bit (or a lot) self conscious on camera, but staring off feels much the same on the other side of camera as it does in person. I may go so far as to put a post it or something behind the sweet spot of the camera so I don't appear rude to the other people on the call.
Yes yes yes
Everybody else is looking at themselves
Best tip honest?
Active eyes. Look at the participants constantly
Me too
THANK YOU!!!
LOL, that's funny!
This was so helpful. Thank you. I’m a teacher having to teach from home and suddenly doing it on zoom and having this info is such a help since I have no idea how to do any of this.
same!!
This is really helpful. Because of Covid, I have Zoom meeting with a recruitment agency and I want to make a good impression! Good work. Oh, you look great.
I definitely needed this as I just found out yesterday I am gonna to have a zoom interview.. thank for the tips!! ❤️
Good luck with the interview!!
Tina Larkin good luck with the interviews. Some other Tips for during the call you may find helpful. When talking - Project your voice and pause, when listening- nod and smile, make eye contact to show you are listening, share your appreciation at the end of the call.
Angie, as always is the case, this video is timely, relevant, and full of easy to apply tips. Love the mug/cell phone idea! You are the best.
Kim Prucnal Did you try what she said over here on this video? Do you still wear makeups because what i can see here you are already a beautiful woman
Hey kim
Definitely watched this video on my first interview on zoom.
Thanks for great tips!
Omg. You don't look your age. I woulda guessed WAY lower.
Hm. I just realized even tho I'm in mid 20's
I would not mind dating older. Learned something new today about myself.
Thanks, great tips! I’m 52 & on Zoom 6 days a week. Many days, do not feel like wearing any makeup. Started putting light eye makeup & lipstick lately. 😎☺️
Hello Anna
The tip I would add is to smile! You don't need to grin like a Cheshire cat, but relaxed expression looks better than a frowny one 😊
A very honest, well thought out presentation. I'm going to share this with my wife who has been doing a lot of Zoom meetings from home lately. By the way, I always tend to believe those that lead by example. Keep up the good work Angie!
I like how she admits that it's a mess behind the camera.
I do too but I lowkey don't believe her.
@@MK-ih6wp i think we all have a different definition / perspective of “it’s a mess”😉🙃

Never really thought about this so your topic was intriguing. Great job. You’re beautiful and your presentation was good.
My partner does that
I love how you showed us as well as told us how to set up everything!
Agreed! It makes a lot of difference when you're talking to people new to these things to show us as well as tell. Thank you for that, Angie.
Thank you, Gia!!! I'm a teacher who does not like zoom, but your tips are great, and I appreciate your warm and helpful tone.
I teach online and have lots of Zoom/webex/Hangouts meetings, these are great tips because (a) I'm not photogenic and (b) can't wear make-up, I'm allergic to everything. Appreciate the tips on lighting and looking up, which are things anyone can do.
