Isn't it funny how the car that you're embarrassed to drive around in when broke is the exact same car that you're proud to drive around in when you're better off.
Its honestly probably because you dont have to worry about reliability issues and as the cars gotten better you have become proud of it and now have pride driving it
Even when I found a job that pays me alot more now I do IT, I still have the 98 corolla it got me here to there its dependable, reliable I got the 5 speed manual. This car helped me get to where im at now, the maintenance and repairs were pretty cheap it still runs strong and i feel really confident that it take me to my destination.
This is my favorite generation Corolla. The simple body design never looks outdated. Clean lines. The straightforward (happily plain) interior and "light to the touch" driving feel make for an easy relationship with these Corollas. Thanks for saving this one, and giving it a chance to keep on keeping someone's car relations simple.
I have a 98 with 180K . They do need upkeep and someone who can DIY the repairs. They are cheap to fix actually...nothing on them is expensive. A few months ago I put mine up for a week and replaced a leaky gas tank, the fuel filler neck, all 4 tires, brake lines to the back, new brakes and rotors/drums all the way around, all struts and finally replaced the washer fluid reservoir...$800 for everything. Always keep an eye on the oil level and of course keep an extra set of door handles handy. Also I put in a $35 Walmart Bluetooth stereo..works great.
My dad had one of these, and each of us four kids independently accidentally broke all the door handles on separate occasions…twice 😂 luckily they’re cheap and easy to replace.
I found this channel because of your Corolla series and i love these videos more than i can tell you. Seeing these cars saved makes me so happy because until you own one(which mine is a Geo Prizm) you have no right to knock them. They run and run and run without much fuss. Sadly as stated, people don't want to be seen in them anymore because society has brainwashed people to think they need a new car to be cool. I would rather have a fleet of these in my driveway than one brand new car. Keep up the Corolla videos as it's your bread and butter of this channel.
Thank you for restoring these cars. There are tons of people out there who want to drive these old "cash for clunker" destined cars, but don't want to spend thousands on some BS mechanic to fix it. If I ever win the lotto I'm going to start a business specifically for restoring and reselling these old cars lol
I have a fully restored 2001 corolla Sport, new paint, clean interior, and still running smooth. I'm sure anyone who wants a touch screen could add one in themselves. I might add one to mine honestly, I mean heck it's a Toyoda for crying out loud it's not gonna die at least for a little while. 🙃
I have a 94 Toyota Corolla LE and it had 96,000 miles when I bought it For $2,300 in 2016. Here in 2022 it now has 162,000 miles and I've had to replace fuel pump, shocks, struts, coils, spark plugs and 02 sensor. All parts were original from first owner. Runs like a dream, but new replacement front exaust pipe ratting like crazy and slowing exceleration down. Boyfriend will be replacing it again soon. Great cars, they are built like a tank. Had a kid on a permit crash my rear back right end three months ago, he really crushed it pretty good, insurance paid for damage and got it fixed like new. Still running strong. Older Toyotas rock.
I got my 8th generation Toyota corolla 1998 XE 2e engine from the Philippines. very cheap to maintain, very reliable and fuel efficient I can drive 20km per liter with aircon
Except some ppl want a car to giv them extra confidence and impress women :/ sad my ex loves his car and he acted different in it like some macho I wouldn’t care if he drive a bomb. Old corollas are pretty cool hey I liked this video I drive a 2000 looks like crap but still goes all u need yeah
If loving corollas is wrong, I don't want to be right. The best bang for your buck in a car ever. My 2006 corolla matrix 4WD is about to hit 220,000 miles and runs perfect. Simple, safe and reliable.
Funny, I just bought the same exact car, in the same exact year, trim, and color for my daughter for $1,200. Bought from a lady that works at a Toyota dealership. It was regularly serviced there. There are a few issues to sort, but mostly cosmetic issues. Seems to run and drive surprisingly well for a 200k mile 25 year old car with working AC (mandatory here in South Florida) I love the simplicity of these cars.
I bought this car for 320$ bought new struts, and an exhaust pipe when I first got it....and then I've had it for 4 years and I haven't had to repair this car at all. I only needed something for the air conditioning once.. and that's it. It's good on gas and it's so great. I love it. I've tinted the windows and made the hubcaps black and it made it look a little less ugly. I've seen this car souped up and it can actually be cute!
My daughter (new driver) crashed her carolla. I wish you had a video about air bags. What you should and shouldn't do yourself. I am a believer! #savethecarollas
I love seeing you and only a handful of other small UA-camrs talk and fix take these 7 and 8th gen Corollas I agree with your rant also and they made a million of these things they’re still cheap and a lot of them running!
I’m a 7th gen guy Also there’s something cool about the design and tilted dash in a shit box of the 90s! I also say got to have a Toyota in your drive way no matter if your a Chevy or vw guy always starts up for me I have a lot of Chevys but I’m never going to not have a Toyota in my drive way
Good work guys. Nice rescue. Had one of these about 12 years ago. It cost me £700 (UK) had 121000 on the clock, had it three years never a problem. Then sold it for £500. Great little car. 1.3 Automatic. Happy days.
It's been done. Easier with a 3speed as shown in the video, since they don't have TCUs (all hydraulically controlled). 4 speeds will need a different wiring harness and a TCU if swapping into a manual and vice versa.
love the vid! i just got a hand me down corolla (same year) and i never see people talk about them. How would you restore the paint problems like on the hood? Mine looks like a similar issue and im not sure what to do.
how do you get almost 40mpg? i bought a 98 corolla with the 4 speed and its getting about 20.. i absolutely love the car and i would really like to fix all of its issues
If you're ONLY getting 20mpg on the highway something is wrong with your car. Check the plugs, wires, cap and rotor as well as the air filter and O2 sensor. Even the 3 speed autos get above 30mpg.
Or…. If you want a touch screen, get the 03 through 08 gen and you can easily install a touch screen, because the radio is 2 din and it’s up high on the dash. That’s what I did and it’s fantastic
Picked up my 99' CE for 900 bucks, running and driving. For the value and reliability I've experienced so far, you can't beat it. Especially with how shitty new cars are being made at the price your expected to pay. For that old radio. Just stick a Bluetooth radio adapter into the cigarette lighter port.
you have a crack in your winsheld?i have a 98 chevy prizm same car 5 speed 282000 miles really good on gas burns a little oil changed out my pcv valve but still the same spark plugs are clean so not sure at this point so i guess i,ll just have to keep adding oil.
These cars burn oil. Just check your oil regularly so you don't run them low and you'll be fine. Eventually they will burn about 1 quart per 200 miles and then you'll have to make a decision. Get a new used engine or junk the car.
I didn't have a car and a coworker of mines Let me borrow his 90's corolla for the driving test. I passed my test and later bought myself my own 2016 corolla. Will never let that car go and will teach my children how to drive in that car. I even want to buy a 90's corolla to restore and make it look like my coworkers corolla.
3 speeds is the most bad fuel consumption a d two much lond gears ratio, I have to 4 speed overdrive but the A4fe is most successful engine I know, I have my toyota corolla 1998 1.6 for 13 years
My aunt drives one. Every single outside door handle is brittle and broke off. She lost the lens on one of her blinkers, it has a bad valve cover gasket, the spark plug wells fill with oil and have to be drained every now and then because it kills the spark plugs, but the damn thing is still kicking. Besides the common problems with these cars, thee funny thing is I can always tell when one is near before I even see it. The engine has a distinct sound that I've heard from all of them. It's like a metallic scraping high pitched gun and I'm not sure what part of the engine it is but they all have it.
I would have used the 4 speed and put a piece of wood between seat and brake pedal, and switch to drive. I had the 3 speed auto 97 corolla for 5 years and 60mph was at 3000 rpm. Really wish i got the 4 speed
Yeah the 3 speeds at highway speeds are very busy. But just turn your radio on so you don't hear it. Yes the 4 speed is quieter and gets better fuel economy but these cars are amazing in any form you get. I personally have the 3 speed auto and i just don't drive 70 mph on the highway. If you go 55 it isn't as buzzy.
Go with 2003-2008 Corolla as long as it has had the piston fixed in 03-05 for oil burning. you'll get a quieter car with more part availability and a cabin air filter too so you can not be the weirdo wearing an n95 in your car for avoiding the pollen and pollution.
Sold my 2001 Corolla recently, it had 255k miles on it and was burning a quart of oil every 100 miles and rebuilding the engine would have costed more than the car could sell for. I was going to buy a new Corolla, but Toyota doesn't seem to make them with manual transmissions anymore unless you spend 40k+ on a GR Corolla, so I got a Civic hatchback instead.
Isn't it funny how the car that you're embarrassed to drive around in when broke is the exact same car that you're proud to drive around in when you're better off.
Its honestly probably because you dont have to worry about reliability issues and as the cars gotten better you have become proud of it and now have pride driving it
Litterally bought one of these for $800 runs and drives great, my cheapest and favorite car
I was embarrassed to learn how to drive in a Corolla as a teenager. As an adult, this is now the car I proudly own.
Even when I found a job that pays me alot more now I do IT, I still have the 98 corolla it got me here to there its dependable, reliable I got the 5 speed manual. Agree. I own a 99 for 13 years and never had any problems. I maintain it myself though and keep it garaged...202 k miles now
Im starting to think i need to garage mine
Car restorations always put a smile on my face.
Good advice to young people that get in over there head.. you don’t need a fancy car and a Corolla will do you everything you need..
