Balalaika with distortion

- Ten years ago I have filmed this guy at the street. He even tried to sell me his instrument, but i was totally broke, so I couldn't afford it.
Here somebody made a breakcore (jungle? idk) remix on this video - • Balalaika with d̶i̶s̶t...
To anybody who is interested: he is playing a Russian folk song named Korobeiniki, the same song was used as a soundtrack in Tetris.
Ой, полна, полна коробушка,
Есть и ситцы и парча.
Пожалей, моя зазнобушка,
Молодецкого плеча!
Oh so that's why it was so familiar
Hey, is this old man - Carl Fredricksen?! ("UP" Pixar)
I like the way he plays the bass part with his thumb, very cool
Long live Russia
see you all in 10 years when this gets randomly recommended to everyone
See ya
I am just back from 2034... You'll never guess...
for real
no you are not lil bro@@MirlitronOne
Yeah man!
my goofyass was like that sounds like tetris then realised thats prolly where they got it from lmao folk sonh
yep, it's the original!
The original song is called korobeiniki
Tetris was created by a soviet mathematician, so he picked a famous folk song as its melody.
@@EwgenijBelzmann Actually, the song was chosen by Nintendo, specifically for the Game Boy version of the game. Alexey Pajitnov consulted on the gameply, but as far as graphics and sound, the only request I know for sure he made was that they not reference the cold war.
Outside of that, Nintendo just picked things they figured people would associate with Russia. Spaceships, St Basil's Cathedral, Tchaikovsky, and a handful of classic Russian folk songs.
What?
Phil Collins is a great multiinstrumentalist.
I was gonna say!!! 😮😮😮 I could have sworn that was Phil!!😂😂😂 is it really?! Or am I just driving myself up the wall🤷🏼♂️🤔😂

Would love to see a Russian folk rock band that uses guitar pedals on the balalaika
I imagine it would look like that (not so folk, but that balalaika is HUGE) 2.bp.blogspot.com/_BfmuVxzYgGQ/TNdVGNO5jcI/AAAAAAAAAWk/9QXtTSmAD4w/s1600/redddd.jpg
Listen to a band called Yat-Kha, I don't think they use balalaikas, but they use traditional russian/mongolian instruments like morin khuurs, and mix folk music from Tuva (Russia) and from the eastern steppe with classic rock, without ditching the autenticity and spirit. They have a album called "yenisei punk", which is tuvan folk more mixed with rock, and another album, "dalai beldiri", that sounds less western but nonetheless its really beautiful and genuine.
@@foolycooly6738The Red Elvises are the reason I discovered balalaika as an instrument! They have some fun music for sure, as well as representing bass balalaika 😎🔺
@@DjDoggDad i have discovered Red Elvises from the Six String Samurai ost (it is THE best movie ever and i can really recommend it)
Check out The Flying Balalaika Brothers.

I would've probably given him the money and let him keep the instrument, looks like he gets so much fun out of playing

it's just a cool observation I'd have never seen otherwise.

I mean this from the bottom of my heart: this is the most metal thing I've seen since metal music.
He's playing Jimi Hendrix style with his thumb wrapping around the fretboard like that, love his passion
He' s definitely cool but using the thumb for fretting isn't as rare as you might think, for example it is standard technique on Bağlama which predates Hendrix by a few centuries :)
@@yalincokyay I figured it was a common thing with this instrument, I was just making an observation I thought was funny. The neck is quite thin, it looks like it would be much more comfortable to do that than on the guitar.

@@dannysoler05 it's a Russian expression. When we see someone doing something cool, we take a more famous or talented person in that field and sarcastically say that they're "standing away, nervously smoking" because they're scared of being noticed and compared

russian Kurt Cobain
Clicked on this video out of simple curiosity, and was hit with nostalgia instead, my mother used to play this song on her balalaika at home when i was a child, granted, it was never distorted back then...
He looks similar to my grandpa and reminds me of him in a way. His way of having this electric balalaika reminds me of my grandpa's ability to just improvise anything and build random cool stuff. He had this old large barrel in his backyard and taught me how to walk on top of it like something from the circus. He made a "hillbilly golf" kit and had a backyard onion farm. Just lots of stuff like that.
Это деда из видео про электрическую баллалайку! Поверить не могу что увидел его ещё раз.

I have never seen someone below the age of 70 play this instrument.
Obviously this is because of the balalaika's minimum requirements - lvl 70 character and at least 60 wisdom.
Some people in the comments say he looks like Phil Collins, others say he looks like Uncle June from the Sopranos or Walter White... I've finally found it, the most cultured comment section in history of UA-cam
Watched a video on West Africa psychedelic rock, and Guinea is gonna love this

Good to see Phil Collins still making music.

That's nice. Then what? He fuckin dies.. I can't even keep his balalaika.
Good to see that Phil Collins is doing fine on retirement
This is one of the cutest things i've seen in my life. Reminds me of the Amelie movie where she showed the glassman random clips about loving life.

I love seeing this instrument being played.
Someone needs to make a goth album where they replace one of the guitars with Balalaika, this would lend itself so well to that genre
Something tells me that would be really good for playing really dissonant noise rock/post-hardcore and extreme metal. You know, stuff along the lines of Voivod or even Deathspell Omega.
I think you are right!
Not the exact same, but Show Me the Body is a noise-ish hardcore band that uses a distorted banjo in place of a guitar that kinda has a similar sound to this.

I guess the next step for that talented balalaika player in the video will be to install a tremolo in it, plug it into a Marshall stack ( A Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier will do too ) add some wah-wah and a Rotovibe and give Zakk Wylde a run for his money 🙂🙂

What he's playing heavily reminds me of the guitar in GTA Liberty City Stories' theme song.

Plot twist: the distortion was purely incidental due the use of an early Soviet amplifier.
I don't think it was intended distortion though - i think he just wanted his balalaika to sound louder
