>Hariyama is a low usage Pokémon >Future paradox iron hands exists >Iron hands is good >Brings attention back to hariyama >People find good in hariyama from iron hands >Hariyama gets better usage >Hariyama becomes it’s own past paradox
I'll always remember my first playthrough of Platinum as a kid, I found Hariyama for the first time and thought he looked super strong. I nicknamed him "Sumo Man" and expected him to be incredibly powerful. To my disappointment he didn't really do anything. He was slow and his moves sucked. But this was because I had no idea what I was doing as a kid. After discovering competitive pokemon I am so happy to know how to use him appropriately now. He's one of may favorite Pokémon because he was one of the first pokemon that made me interested in competitive- because even as an 11 year old I was thinking "this thing can't possibly be bad, he looks so strong, maybe I'm doing something wrong?" Then I went down the rabbit hole of learning EV/IV's abilities, held items, physical/special split, etc. lol
I first got him in Emerald. He was often too slow to attack first in Battle Frontier but God have mercy on any soul that is weak to Fighting or Rock...
Hariyama set itself apart from the competition in its debut game with that massive 144 base HP stat and access to the excellent defensive ability Thick Fat-which provides a Fire and Ice resistance.
Gen 3 is so much fun, ur tournament has inspired me to try out so many archetypes. Higher elo games have taught me so much about scouting for traps, coming from a mostly team preview background (started comp singles bw1). Way more accessible than gen 2, but slower than gen 9. Still filled with hacks given crit rate/dmg + para spam. I like how balanced the meta game is overall though, nothing feels unbeatable. My favorite play style so far is physical offense, but a bulky Hariyama wish support team with spikes /sand rampant is satisfying to see chip accumulate as opposed to one shoting everything.
Hariyama is such a well-designed Pokémon. I've got nothing else to add, really. I already had a soft spot for it and thought it was a bit underrated in the past, but hearing an explanation of how perfectly it fits in the metagame of the generation it was introduced in makes me appreciate it even more. But then again, I always had a soft spot for slow, tanky, but hard-hitting Pokémon, so I'm aware I have kind of a bias. 😂
Always was great! Despite its bulk being strange, it could always live one hit and thanks to its high base attack, it could seriously hurt literally anything. Overall, great Pokemon and my favorite fighting type. Can't believe it's just UUBL.
Also as a kid when I played diamond for the first time I caught a wurmple from a honey tree and evolved it into beautifly. Which I then replaced my chimchar with for some reason
I was thinking "why use HP Ghost instead of Knock Off?". Instantly remember Knock Off had 20 Power and was special. Even under those detrimental conditions is impressive running it and be viable.
I know they balance the games around VGC rather than singles, but I am astounded at Knock Off's modern power level. Removing a Pokémon's item is already unbelievably valuable, surely? I can't imagine how it would need 130 power on top of that. In the words of Copernicus, "this is insane."
Everytime i see your videos, since i've never played any ADV format, i always wonder why there are so many pokemon in UUBL. It seems like it could be its standalone tier (love your videos)
That was something I practiced in Gen 6 Monotype with Dragon back in the day. Tank Garchomp + AV Goodra, both with the Dragon Tail, did some nice softening to reach the important damage thresholds
Hariyama is a Pokemon I really overlooked when I first played through Gen 3, but nearly every gen I have found something new to like about it, and I was really happy to play it in early VGC (reg A) as a support 'mon. Sadly it fell off as the format got power crept, so I'm always happy to see it thriving in earlier generations.
I’ve been using Hariyama on my TSS Gen 3 team. It’s so cool, and is genuinely fun to use a good defensive fighting type! Knock Off really helps wear down mons like Suicune, and helps put mons like Skarmory on a timer since it no longer has recovery. Aerodactyl also hates losing Choice Band.
If I remember correctly, Guts did not ignore the attack reduction of Burn in Gen 3, causing the attack boost of Guts to be canceled out. This was changed in Gen 4, I believe.
Wait so how often do ADV tier shifts take place? Monthly, or just whenever it's deemed necessary? And moving Hariyama from UUBL to OU would have an effect in name only, right? Is the point just to accurately reflect its perceived viability?
Out of curiosity, would it be worth it for Hariyama to have Substitute? It would add more fuel to the mind game fire and give Hariyama status protection which would be good for Thick Fat sets.
Hariyama is at another peak because of iron hands. You may be weak to ground now, but you no longer weak to flying with pawmots shared typing with one powerful paradox Pokémon
I transferred over my Hariyama from Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness all the way to Pokemon Scarlet and started using it online in doubles just for the trick room teams that are everywhere. It's not as good as Iron Hands but it's still decent
I hear Funny Guy struggles with entry hazards + priority. He might try scarf tera water with trick to handle those threats but I hear the “wet bandit” strategy isn’t very good
i've been using this guy since Sword and Shield cuz he's got takeout and wide guard, using him next to toxtricity in NU to spam boom burst and hit steel types who walk Tox
Why don't they do earlier gen tier ladders based on usage statistics? How people think this would make things different from the current viability system?
All the years of mockery must have affected Funny Guy deeply. I just hope he gets the help he needs before he gets taken advantage of by the dastardly Iron Mugulis
How does move priority and speed work in? Gen 3ou I've been playing it with a friend and despite my Pokemon outspeedimg his, random moves seem to get priority Like meotoero mash and earthquake
question from somewhat of an outsider, is there any functional difference between UUBL and OU? Aside from theoretically being able to return to UU should it be unbanned
i definitely agree that hariyama should be OU. It has much more versatility than the other fighting types, having 2 good abilities and multiple different moveslots, making it unpredictable and awkward to switch into. being able to always do something against common fighting checks as opposed to a breloom spore or any other fighting type gimmick make it the most consistent fighter out there. it has a surprising amount of switchin opportunities vs tyranitar, blissey, and snorlax (albeit more shaky here), which is more valuable in a gen 3 environment where you want to dish out progress multiple times in a battle. i hope hariyama rises soon because it definitely deserves it, I would personally rank it above joleton, cloyster, and gyarados at the moment.
"funny guy" might have amazing stats but with a defence of 1 priority moves is its bane, but get rid of that and your opponent is DOOOOMED unless it only have crapy moves ofc hehe

Its a shame that it would take another billion years for it to evolve into Brian Hans, and be domaint in VGC
At least that not like Tyranitar and Hydreigon
I've seen it top regionals in vgc before.
People just didn’t have the Guts to use Hariyama until now

Woah it’s glimbus!
Nice to know that the future paradox form of Hariyama, Iron Hands, is thriving in Gen 9 OU
Wait hang on, that's real?
Iron hands permanent is home is uubl which is funny been banned from uu like three times now
It's not so much thriving in OU as much as it is too much for UU.
It is thriving in VGC though.

This the first example of a _defensively_ oriented Fighting type.
@@a-s-greigunfortunately from gen 4 onward Haryiama would begin to get outclassed
With the addition of more and more bulky fighting types over the years
But in Gen 3, Hariyama’s unique qualities and defensive advantages over its competition are very valuable.

Obsessed with his overly min-maxed stats
Iron Hands has been a godsend in VGC, so praise to his thicc father
