I don't mind them scrapping it, because it's not worth really more than a little chuckle.
@@Tephnos With graphical fidelity comes a sharp decrease in performance when considering reflections. Reflections are one of the biggest hits to performance in a lot of games hence why they usually have a setting for them. In this case, there are so few reflections it probably seemed like an unnecessary additional hit to performance and unneeded work for so little return.
strange to see they added environment illumination with the magmoor flamethrowers, but removed it from the beam weapons. also, nice to see the thermal visor much more accurately reflect a real life FLIR camera, including the motion blur.
I've looked into this myself, since reactive beam illumination seemed like a pretty huge atmospheric detail to cut. The general consensus seems to be that - given the hugely upscaled textures and overall graphical load of the game compared to the original - that processing those beam lighting changes on the environment in real time would just be too demanding on the Switch's hardware, and would result in the games' framerate taking enough of a hit to be deemed unacceptable. Thus, the effect was regrettably cut.
@@BoltFraction Lol thats just wrong, the missiles, super missiles, plasma beam, boost ball and power bombs all cast dynamic light. You can even use a hacked Switch to monitor the GPU usage durring live gameplay and find there is always enough headroom left to implement dynamic light from regular beam shots too. This is not a hardware limitation issue, its something else.
@@The_Ostrich Weird. If what you say is true, then it's absolutely bizarre that the beam lighting was removed. Seems way too glaring an omission to be honest oversight. Maybe it was causing something to bug out that we just don't understand yet. Perhaps we can hope it'll be patched back in come the future.
@@BoltFraction Yop, those lighting effects would put no strain on the system, even if they came with dynamic shadows, but which seem to be not a part of anything in the game. So just light sources without shadows or nothing to make the Switch bother. Also thinking about the 20 years older original game on weaker hardware being able to do it, why would you think it's demanding for the Switch? Texture resolution makes no difference in calculating the effect, only the complexity of models, if shadows are cast and the resolution of those. We wouldn't even ask for shadows, so bare lighting, that eats up no mentionable processing power, is more than appropriate - so yes, it seems illogical, that they cut it. It was either some (weird) artistic decision, or maybe it truely caused some problematic glitch in the code at some point and so they cut it. But I really miss that lighting, the far improved visuels get dragged down again without this lighting.
Speaking of changed cutscenes, in the final boss fight when Samus is chasing Metroid Prime through the crater, she winds up for her somersaults in a much more realistic manner by doing a small hop at the end of her run before putting all her weight into the flip. She didn't do that in the original game and it went directly from running to the somersault.
Same thing go for Samus Aran gave a small hop before literally JUMP off the floor to activate her Double Jump/Space Jump. In original, she just hauled her arse off the floor, no small hop.
@2:15 Another detail is that when you're looking upwards the rain will patter onto your visor, but if you're looking down/straight the rain won't hit your visor.
It's crazy that the original has some things I wish they would have kept in the remaster, like the room with light rays and the reflection if samus in the glass. Speaks volumes to how much love was put into the game the whole time.
I can understand the change in with the lightrays. They look a lot more realistic in the remaster, which of course is the point of the whole thing. But with the new looks, flashing the whole screen wouldn't look fitting, so I get it why they removed it and it's still a pretty and eye-catching room.
I just noticed today while playing it that the fog in the research lab when you first fight the space pirates in Phendrana Drifts is gone. In the original was more tense because it showed the need for the thermal visor as you could not see the pirates hiding in the fog. In the remaster, they can all be seen very clearly. That fog also gave the room a more freezer-like feel, the fog sold the idea it was a cold area.
The remaster got rid of a lot of visual obscurity the original game had. People aren't talking about this barely at all, maybe they can't really see past their own excitement, but I immediately noticed and it kinda turned me off to the remaster a lot. The fog, the moody darkness you had to strain your eyes to make out anything in... it's practically all gone and replaced with lighting that makes the game seem closer to a generic Unreal Engine sci-fi game than tne Metroid Prime I spent long days of my childhood playing.
If you're referring to the first large room you encounter in the labs-the one with a bunch of large cylindrical moving beams-then I think you're mistaken. In the original, that room only fills up with fog/steam after the power in the lab has been cut, which is also the case in the remake. The first time you go through there (when the cutscene with the drone plays), there's no fog on either version.
@@ds777-lu4kj ahh yes, you are indeed correct. My memory has failed me… Although there are still minor graphical differences in terms of what’s missing, just not to the degree as I thought. Still one of my most cherished games I played.
So in the original, there was what appeared to be a glitch during the Meta Ridley fight: When you exposed his weakness (the glowing spot in his stomach), sometimes, he would become completely immune to damage for some reason. This is most notice-able when using the Wave Buster. This seems to have been fixed in the remastered version. Also, in the original, Meta Ridley was immune to the Flamethrower. This is also no longer the case as he now takes damage from it. (Note: both of these issues were also present in the Trilogy version)
Meta Ridley also had an even rarer glitch in the original version of the game where if you ball boosted into him and that hit took his wings out at the same time then he'd start ground pounding the arena.
Okay, I think I was a victim of this glitch as I was stuck in Meta Ridley fight with Dolphin :D Even though I used save states, used all my missiles (almost maxed out), got it to show the weak spot and used super missiles, it didn't die :D It even flashed like when taking damage but kept at nonexistent health throughout multiple trials :D Then Prime Remastered came, I played the game through again and beat Meta Ridley on first try :D
Most of Remastered's problem is the lack of lighting in some of the objects. Seems like there is only win it has compare to the original when it comes to light effects is this one 1:38 Not only it lights up the room it also affects Samu's Arm Cannon.
I would say my favorite change was the boost ball changing colors based on equipment, it turns purple when in gravity suit and red when in the phazon suit!
I've got mixed feelings about some of these changes. I definingly approve of the reduced sun-glare, but feel some effects should have been kept. The weapons and enemies illuminating the environment is what I'm hoping they patch back in. (Mentioned in part one.) Edit: I did some digging. It would appear that's one of the biggest complaints about the remaster, the loss of projectile lighting. So I'm hoping that's enough to have it patched back in. With that restored, I'd confidently say the remaster is a complete visual upgrade.
This may be a thing that they may not be able to patch in depending on how the world lighting was done. Baked lighting is wonderful as far as power required for it is concerned, but it really does sap away flexibility.
It actually exists in the game but the range of it is massively reduced. Say if u shoot parallel to a wall by standing next to it, it does light up and travel across.
The animation for when you get the Phazon Suit was largely changed; instead of shuddering with power, then taking the iconic Prime stance, the stance was removed completely and Sammy just stands up, ready to continue, like nothing major happened.

Not sure if anyone pointed it out but something you'll also notice in the rain, if you look up raindrops will get on the visor but if you look down there won't be any
Honestly. Most lighting is improved. The lens flare effect removal I could believe is a deliberate choice. Her eyes aren't camera lenses and her visor shouldn't hinder her vision so much. Plus makes it harder to see the actual surroundings. Losing the mirror seems more sad.
Actually, I'm glad for the reduction of some of the lights, because I mainly play in the dark, and such light effect could make it hard for me to look at my screen
@@FFKonoko Removal of lense flare is 100% intentional. Early 2000's games loved overusing that lense flare effect and its aged poorly. Almost every game that got a remaster or upscale from that era has removed it.

So THE one particular feature in the original (mirror surface reflections of Samus) has been cut in the remaster. That and losing lighting effects from the beams and morph ball are my biggest gripes so far. Cmon, those were minor details that could have been left in.

No cap, even though the remaster looks dramatically better, the fact the original game still looks that good is a testament to how seriously retro can take projects.
Looks like a promotional still of Samus photoshopped in front of the game's intro screen with a heavy gaussian blur. In other words, it's not an image that exists outside of this video.
@@urbiznesnunuv6938 oh what the hell, looks like I replied to the wrong comment. I thought I was replying to a guy who was asking what the picture at the end was
The game looks absolutely beautiful. Even though there are definitely downgrades from gamecube version, This remaster is definitely using assets for future games. That's probably what Retro has been doing for so long. Using Prime 1 as their bible for Prime 4, and creating a whole new story with integration of other power ups not in Prime games like speed boost. Prime 4 will be a beast if it is the flagship for next Nintendo console.
I'm wondering if there are any differences in the x-ray visor between both versions since in the remastered you can see Samus' hand in her blaster, I never had the original game so I don't really know
I think I'm going to prefer eventually getting a rom hack of the remaster that adds back in nice things from the original game... over buying it. I already bought all the Prime games (usually at full price even) outside of Federation Force and even at the 40 dollar price tag, I don't think I want just a remaster, and especially not one that removes things I liked about the original game and messed up the door textures, as one of the original game's developers stated on Twitter. The many, heavy discounts there are on PC games and even occasional giveaways have wisened me to console games and their limited time purchase windows... making me only interested in buying Switch games when I can't wait to play them. I'm also not a bread winner, so it's difficult for me to buy games very often, much less expensive AAA and/or new games...
Man I love watching clips of this game. Metroid was the first franchise I think I really got behind, starting with Prime. I'm of the opinion that sometimes, these older games felt more expansive and immersive because they were NOT open world. Suspended disbelief and the thought of "what could be beyond those rocks, those trees, that blocked door" almost makes the world feel that much bigger and you that much smaller. I love a big open world (Zelda: BotW was incredible) and I'd love to see that in Prime 4, but there's a special characteristic in these old games that forced you to use your imagination.
The detail on the arm cannon overall is amazing, especially how each beam is seen through the Thermal Visor. I didn't even notice how it heats and cools like that! One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet, about Samus' skeletal hand viewed through the X-Ray Visor... I've not gone back to check this, but I SWEAR in the original, you can see her index finger actually pulling the trigger inside the cannon, and it doesn't seem to do that in the Remaster.
There are a few changes that I understand, the light flare in the part when Samus crosses the streaks of light in the ruins could be a problem for photosensitive people. Same applies for the Bombus multi-coloured, electrical explosions, they were brought down a lot so that the lights aren't destracting and also won't cause seizures or migranes.
Love the video. Quick question where can I find the outro image? I'm thinking of changing my tablets wallpaper and I'm not able to find images as crisp and clean like that one.
I'm all for the HD upgrades, but I think many of these new effects are for the worse, especially with the thermal visor. And why did they take away Samus' reflection from those mirrored surfaces in the Chozo Ruins?
What exactly are the new effects you hate? I can only see a few that are objective downgrades. The godrays one, the thermal visor blur, the reflections. All very minor nitpicks compared to the big one, beam illumination. But they've made up for it with a ton of their own additions that looks awesome.
I wonder if some of the lighting differences (shots not lighting darkened rooms, reduced lens flare in the Chozo Ruins, no glare when walking through beams of light) were a result of photosensitivity concerns.
hm.. some of these changes i dont like.. the clear shadows directly under the bees look wierd.. and not having beams light up hallways.. it looks great though and i have bought the game.. shame i have to wait until the 26th to get it.. i remember morph-balling into water changed from the gamecube to the wii triology version.. how does it look on the switch?
Despite the many great improvements, I really do wonder why they messed with the glare so much. It kind of sucks they changed that. The glare from the sun in the chozo ruins room and the room with the light rays was pretty cool and added to the immersion. Seems like an unnecessary change. Also, not sure why they removed Samus's reflection. But again wonderful remaster so just minor criticisms.
Aside from the fact that she wears a super high-tech alien visor, sun glare like that is just simply unrealistic, which is why I would say they toned it down. The reflections were probably removed due to performance issues. Reflections always come at a high cost especially with the quality of modern graphics. The old one, despite a cool thing, looked very bad. I would also suspect that a vast majority of people didn't even know that was a thing, like myself, so why sacrifice performance and time in remaking it?
#9 was the first thing I looked for because a moving reflection was amazing twenty years ago. Not seeing it in the remaster has been my only disappointment so far. It's still an amazing game though.
i'm impressed that you were able to catch all of this. Remastered version look so good but is not perfect. In Magmor Caverns i still prefer the cooled down lava/magma fx in the original version versus the remastered.
The Skybox in the Remastered Chozo Ruins are still static. The Developers just added .. I guess another moving texture on top (or below) the Skybox to give it some more immersion.
samus's touched up animations in cutscenes were my favorite part of the remaster. there are so many animations in the original that just look super silly and awkward
I agree, but I think one of the silliest animations, they kept. When she receives a weapon upgrade, this animation is just stupid. Far better the sequels.
4:00 yeah, I wish that could have bin fixed, everything with that vision what not bad but that blur effect was to much for me, staring at that for half an hour would give me a headache or make me sick.

So far my only complaint is the lighting effects. No beam illumination or morph ball illumination. The mines are way to dark even with thermal visor. In rooms that are lit, there seems to be a second or so transition after entering through a door where the light takes a bit to load in, is it slow loading, or simulating your eyes adjusting??? also, nice to see the thermal visor much more accurately reflect a real life FLIR camera, including the motion blur.
@@BoltFraction
Lol thats just wrong, the missiles, super missiles, plasma beam, boost ball and power bombs all cast dynamic light.
I noticed that too. Kinda prefer the original animation for that. But that whole battle is so cool in both versions.
I think the updated Samus animations really go a long way. Especially during the final boss fight. Really made the run and jumping look clean.
I just noticed today while playing it that the fog in the research lab when you first fight the space pirates in Phendrana Drifts is gone. In the original was more tense because it showed the need for the thermal visor as you could not see the pirates hiding in the fog. In the remaster, they can all be seen very clearly.
That fog also gave the room a more freezer-like feel, the fog sold the idea it was a cold area.
that is so sad...
That actually kinda sucks
My memory has failed me…
Although there are still minor graphical differences in terms of what’s missing, just not to the degree as I thought.
Seems like there is only win it has compare to the original when it comes to light effects is this one 1:38
Not only it lights up the room it also affects Samu's Arm Cannon.
I would say my favorite change was the boost ball changing colors based on equipment, it turns purple when in gravity suit and red when in the phazon suit!
the original still holds up sooo well honestly
Man, the way Samus walks towards Thardus is so cool. Like she looks like she's about to roll up her arm cannon and beat some golem booty
4:45 There's also a tunnel ion Phendrana's Edge that you take with reflecting surfaces in morph ball mode that doesn't reflect anything anymore.
I knew there was something i didn't like about the thermal. Good video
I've got mixed feelings about some of these changes. I definingly approve of the reduced sun-glare, but feel some effects should have been kept. The weapons and enemies illuminating the environment is what I'm hoping they patch back in. (Mentioned in part one.)
Edit: I did some digging.
@@Daigon95 I'll have to look carefully, thanks for the tip.
Maybe projectile lighting is in the game, it's just a lot less noticeable because the remaster is way brighter than the original.
I think the "smoke" is actually supposed to be water that is getting aerosolized by the exhaust hitting the wet ground
The upcoming Prime 4 could be on par with this remaster visually and I'd be completely satisfied. It looks fantastic!
The animation for when you get the Phazon Suit was largely changed; instead of shuddering with power, then taking the iconic Prime stance, the stance was removed completely and Sammy just stands up, ready to continue, like nothing major happened.
It was a Trilogy change. I like the original more but people thought that it didn’t match her style
@@quadraxisdominator7364 Yeah, she went like, "EWWWWWWWW... *raised arm-cannon* Oh, Phazon Suit! Yay! *aiming arm-cannon to the side*"
@@quadraxisdominator7364 It was a change to the Japanese Gamecube version (the PAL versions are based on Japanese Prime 1).

1:06 , 2:06 The Gamecube was a _Beast._ People are creaming over the re-Master; yes it's Ok but not all that; early Unreal 4 level.
I _really_ miss the days when Nintendo went toe to toe with it's rivals' (PS2) and was able to not only stand it's ground but deal telling blows. The Prime series being one of the major ones of many that cemented the GC as every bit as worthy successor to the N64 - if not _better._ I hope the Switch 2 comes out soon - I love the Switch in concept but I'm tired of the calculator specs.
Not sure if anyone pointed it out but something you'll also notice in the rain, if you look up raindrops will get on the visor but if you look down there won't be any
This was actually in the original as well :)
@@lyndi26 oh cool, I haven't played the original since I was kid. It was fun to go back to it after so long
I never knew you could see Samus' reflection in those wall shields.
kind of sad to see that some lighting effects have been downgraded but a miniscule downgrade for the whole experience.
I agree. Very small, minuscule downgrades for a superb game.
#12 I legit thought that the light sources were some kind of small spotlights, it's much better protrayed in the original. Overall i think they sacrified a lot of ambience vs better gameplay / 60 constant fps.
which is funny considering the gamecube kept all that ambience and still ran at 60 fps on hardware designed over 20 years ago.

Removing Samus's reflection from the Ball decoration in the Chozo Ruins is the single biggest blunder of the Remaster. I loved that lil thing in the OG. Stopped to look at it whenever I entered the room.
Wow remastered is so dark it requires termal vision from the start but you can't run with it because of the blur
Yea seeing the reflection of yourself on that one surface i noticed right away
Was kind of tripping out seeing the rain run down the arm cannon when i realized it after awhile
I know it's not PS5 levels of graphics, but they still improved it a lot, and not just graphics wise. To have it run at a smooth 60 fps on a handheld console is great!
I never noticed until today, and I don't believe it was in the original version, but when your health is low you can hear Samus breathing heavy!
No, that was in the OG. I'm playing it right now with 1 energy tank so I hear it a lot lol

The game came out when I was 8 and my dad helped me play through, and the only reason I heard the heavy breathing is that I'm helping my son on his play through on the Remaster. Full circle.
I played the original game religiously, and I didn’t know about the shield reflection?
4:32 WOW! I didn't knew that! That's a very cool Detail tho!
So THE one particular feature in the original (mirror surface reflections of Samus) has been cut in the remaster. Literally the first AMAZING thing I noticed about the games graphics when I was 14.....doesn't exist. I still love this, and want to get it, but wow that is utterly disappointing. That and losing lighting effects from the beams and morph ball are my biggest gripes so far. Cmon, those were minor details that could have been left in.
I can only think that the removal of so many lighting effects mentioned in this and other videos is purely a design choice, but it is still disappointing.
2:30 good water effects will always look amazing
Giving up cool bits to get new cool bits in place, a worthy trade-off
2:26 I didn't even NOTICE that.
One of the things that I just love about Nintendo games is the extreme attention to detail. Small things like this I'm just an absolute sucker for.
Sure, let's get rid of the lighting of our own weapons, but the flame throwers, they get the treatment..........
It's really weird, how this beautiful remaster does a few rather important elements worse than the original. But it doesn't seem like an accident, they seem to have made this decision purposefully. For whatever reason. Let's hope they correct this with a patch.
@@thecianinator what does this have to do with anything
@@urbiznesnunuv6938 oh what the hell, looks like I replied to the wrong comment. I thought I was replying to a guy who was asking what the picture at the end was

The game looks absolutely beautiful. Even though there are definitely downgrades from gamecube version, This remaster is definitely using assets for future games. That's probably what Retro has been doing for so long. Using Prime 1 as their bible for Prime 4, and creating a whole new story with integration of other power ups not in Prime games like speed boost. Prime 4 will be a beast if it is the flagship for next Nintendo console.
The biggest loss here is the missing reflection on the mirrors, that shit was so cool
I'm wondering if there are any differences in the x-ray visor between both versions since in the remastered you can see Samus' hand in her blaster, I never had the original game so I don't really know
You could see the hand in the original as well. I think it also was animated to different poses for each beam as well.
@@GBDupree it is also in the remastered, I guess in all version you can see a glimpse of her hand that makes the same pose as the beam icon
5:05 I think there was also another reflection in Phendrana on an icy surface that is no longer there.
I can't confirm for Prime and Echoes, but in Corruption you could 100% see her index finger flex. I was looking for it in the remaster also
That was Prime 3. :) What youd see in Prime 1 is her Hands being the shape of the Beam symbols
Cool video, but you should of thrown in the rock hitting samus at they end cutscene bit for both versions :)
While some things are worse .. honestly: the original holds up SO well!! after all this time!!
Amazing graphics for it's time and still look good to this day
Excellent comparison, but you missed the opportunity to show Samus getting hit by a rock in HD
Damn, I kinda liked the reflection
I wonder if some of the lighting differences (shots not lighting darkened rooms, reduced lens flare in the Chozo Ruins, no glare when walking through beams of light) were a result of photosensitivity concerns.
hm.. some of these changes i dont like.. the clear shadows directly under the bees look wierd.. and not having beams light up hallways.. it looks great though and i have bought the game.. shame i have to wait until the 26th to get it.. i remember morph-balling into water changed from the gamecube to the wii triology version.. how does it look on the switch?
The ice beam doesn't turn blue in magmoor using the thermal visor i am disappointed
oh thank god for the lens flare change in thardus. that was what made that fight hell.
I would also suspect that a vast majority of people didn't even know that was a thing, like myself, so why sacrifice performance and time in remaking it?
you can also see the drops on Samus' suit when saving on her ship :)
1:56 so they added light when the flamethrowers blow but they removed the light from the beams? bruh
The Skybox in the Remastered Chozo Ruins are still static. The Developers just added .. I guess another moving texture on top (or below) the Skybox to give it some more immersion.
i really felt like taking away the sunshine, and the reflections, were a mistake, but the water effects are wonderful!
Let's go. One of my favorite channels and Def my favorite game series
The new thermal visor effects are awesome. The blur may be a little too much but makes it look more realistic
samus's touched up animations in cutscenes were my favorite part of the remaster. there are so many animations in the original that just look super silly and awkward
I agree, but I think one of the silliest animations, they kept. When she receives a weapon upgrade, this animation is just stupid. Far better the sequels.
Can you make more videos about metroid?
It is a hell of a remaster. I had noticed the rain, it’s just crazy.
Yeah the thing with the motion blur in the thermal visor was because of technical difficulties, same for the light reflecting with the beams
4:00 yeah, I wish that could have bin fixed, everything with that vision what not bad but that blur effect was to much for me, staring at that for half an hour would give me a headache or make me sick.

Agree with me or not... this statement is true
Don't make me laugh. I still have the GC version from when it was new. I hooked it up to compare. The remake is great.
I'd like to add that Meta Ridley no longer has a weakness to the Boost Ball, though I'm not sure if that weakness was present in the Trilogy version.
i think my only complaint is there isn't enought lighting effects, you barly see and light from shooting and explosions
I find some of the rooms in the remastered version to be too dark. I can’t see where I’m going in some of these rooms. Overall I like the changes.
Samus is part metroid now, and metroids do have vampiric abilities, hence the lack of reflection now.
If this game doesn't win any awards at this year's game awards, even just for the graphical upgrades, imma riot

My only complaint about the Remaster is there is no reflecting light source in the dark with your shot anymore
I hope they patch the lighting.
I think it is meant to be a simulation of your eyes adjusting. You can notice it when you look up at the sky and back down again that there's a brightness adjustment. Looks pretty neat IMO.
Imagine if square put this amount of love into crisis core reunion.
It's interesting that flamethrower emit light now, but the beams no longer do.
Ah, I wondered why the Thermal Visor looked a bit fuzzy using it.
The chozo ruins mirror reflection still hurts 💔
@4:55 I wish they kept that in there.
what about idle animations?
