The Tekken basics. I lose, I blame the opponent's character and/or the player for their playstyle, and then I tilt queue again. And maybe do a Reddit Post about it.
so hyped for this, thanks phi. hit a plateau on tenryu and it's tough finding motivation when i can fall as low as ganryu and then go back up to tenryu the same night.
Gonna fall asleep to this so I hopefully internalize it in my dreams. Went from Garyu to Tenryu last session after the 1.08 update so this could be what pushes me further!
Phidx you are a gem to all newcomers to tekken 8 I started watching u as soon as I got the game and I’m blue rank now 2 months into tekken . Much love ❤
Hey Phi, I’ve been in stuck Garyu with Jin and I really appreciate you taking the time to talk/teach with us, I mash in between strings because I just want to punch them so badly and I feel like that’s what Tekken 8 wants me to do, when I just block all the time I just lose. So I’m trying to get better 😅
I'm not in red ranks anymore (besides ranking up a new character) and I still found this helpful. I look forward to one for blue because I can't seem to get out of there.
This is my first Tekken game I've played competitively but I've been playing fgs for years. I play as Reina (as I've come to understand she's one of the harder players to master) and understanding her big buttons, stances, punishes and combos, and frame traps has gotten me to Shinryu just within a month, thanks to your educational videos! Please keep up the work! You're helping build an incredible community. P.S - Just joined your discord :))
@@Pulseman also, Phi did mention to start forgetting you’re even playing ranked and start playing to adapt to your opponents. The way you read, react, and attack should all be a read of the opponents defensive/offensive countermeasures. It’s what we call “the mind game” hehe
@@Pulseman that’s where the higher ranked players see separate themselves from lower ranks. How good is your offense? Your low reaction? Your punish reaction? Your evasive moves? I would really like to see what you offer for the blue ranks, I am currently raijin constantly, and I am having a lot of trouble progressing with asuka.
I've been stuck in purple. Really need to do my homework on each character to get to blue. Seems like I just get stuck not knowing the matchup. Can't wait for the purple to blue vid!
Love it Phi I've been wanting this exact content from you a lot of times I will look at past flights but I'm not good at having things down and it translating to practice.
I'd recommend that Bryan just doesn't use QCF34 in combos, it requires really good execution and timing but there are much easier options with only minor drop in final damage.
Hey phi I'm a relatively older "student" of yours. I learned from your videos about 4-5 months ago during the initial period of Tekken 8 (The kbd video, frame trap video, sidestep drill, law warm up drill, low reaction drill etc.) And in my journey while climbing the ranks, I mostly focused on punishment, matchup knowledge, movement, low reactions, drills, labbing, replay analysis, etc. (defense in general) even when I was in red ranks because I felt like thats the direction your content was encouraging me to improve in. And I found it to be very fulfilling because I was able to beat some Bushin/Tekken King friends in long sets while I was still at Garyu/Tenryu. I got to those higher ranks eventually as my offense kept improving but I feel like I wouldn't have been able to get there without that strong defensive foundation that you had encouraged me to develop. But as of late your guides for new players has shifted more towards focusing on improving offense first and worrying about defense later. Was there a specific reason and was it a conscious decision or just a coincidence?
My defensive approach is very T7-influenced Defense is still very important, but is not the priority in lower ranks imo. After coaching many beginners I realized a basic offense is very crucial Defense becomes a huge sticking point in Blue ranks and up, especially after the 200K prowess threshold But you'll notice even with the Jin player I was focused on defensive tips
@@PhiDX True I do sometimes feel like your Tekken 7 has kinda creeped into my playstyle especially when I see that my aggressiveness is literally 9/25 according to the game stats and everytime I think of improving nowadays (if I really ever hope to reach Tekken God) its mostly a focus on poking more and putting out "an obstacle course" (as you like to say) for the opponent to navigate through instead of letting them run their offense for free just because I know the counterplay to it.
Worth mentioning using the delay frames setting in practice mode. I definitely got frustrated in red ranks with combos dropping online that I hit every time in practice because of roll back and delay frames. The new delay frames setting is great for that to find routes that work for you when you notice there is lag
You can get Fujin by knowing your own character. In blue ranks you have to focus on the others. Start punishing more, try to whiff punish. Learn where can you step a string or duck a high. Stop being unsafe and learn kbd. I see so many people not stepping in Fujin. Learn when and where to sidestep and walk. These are the general tips imo.

Idk if PotFriend is a Guilty Gear player (his name might be referencing Potemkin) but GG has a just block mechanic so he might have some muscle memory to adjust if he's trying to tap back to block.
How much does prowess affect matchmaking? I play in red/purple but most of my opponents are 200-300k prowess and there's a clear difference in knowledge and skill as to what I'm saying here. I do play EU though.
I have a question, I'm at a similar level, i have the stupid habit, of ducking preemptively, often at stupid situations, of it i would go for a low mix up myself in a situation even if nothing in the opponent's gameplay indicated that he would use a low in that moment, and i hate it because i get launched so much and eat alot of damage for no reason, maybe it's also a habit that comes form other games where your default is guarding by ducking and standing up if a slow overhead is coming. I have a really hard time loosing this habit, got any tips?
