Driveway Pothole Repair - Asphalt Driveway Repair

- You can make a permanent pothole repair in your driveway with a pothole patch. I've had great results from Henry products. I like how easy this Henry pothole patch is to work with. I've used a bagged pothole patch that came out in chucks and was difficult to spread.
You can fill holes in 2" layers, tamping each 2" layer before applying more product. You can spread the pothole patch with a trowel, rake or shove. You want to fill the hole 1 1/2" above the finished surface before tamping.

I love all of the comments from people who have clearly never worked with asphalt or cold patch. Do you people not realize that this video was made for home owners who most likely do not have access to tampers or hot mix or asphalt saws? Working for my city’s street division for the past 7 years I can tell you cold patch will hold up in a scenario like this for months years possibly if it is done right it even will hold up on high traffic roadways if compacted enough. Do any of you even realize how expensive hot patch is and that you can only buy it by 1/4 ton increments? This saved the home owner money and was a great fix. Rather then calling a paving company and spending an arm and a leg for work that didnt need to be done they did it themselves. Enough from you arm chair quarterbacks who have never used the stuff more then twice in your life.
Are you new to youtube? Haven't you figured out how youtube works, yet?
- Post a video
- Wait for all the trolls to arrive and give their criticisms (not recommendations/solutions, nor their own videos showing their so-called successful method). Then they leave behind derogatory comments towards someone trying to help others out... then they move-on. Although when "you" leave comments recognizing them, you only feed right into their hands. If you ignore them they have nothing to feed off, and leave..... LOL

Lol. So, all of that being true, I’ve decided the goal to strive for in the ideal YT comment is-something sarcastic that exposes stupidity or ignorance of the dumb commenter.
It’s an elusive crown, but when it works it shuts ‘em up or makes ‘em continue to blab incoherently (like Democrats) 😎

Thanks, dude for the method endorsement (from a professional). I definitely need to use this for my driveway. Can't afford the pro method.

Didn't know you could repair a pothole over top of broken asphalt. Thought you had to break it up completely, clean it out, cut clean edges with a concrete saw, add gravel before pouring the asphalt in and tamping. This is much easier. You learn something new everyday. Going to try it - hope it works... and lasts. Thanks for this.
Hi, cutting it out is the best way, but for homeowners that don't have the tools, this is a good patch.

Yeah you do this is a half assed repair that will fail.
@@mp-xt2rgHalf-assed repairs are my favorite kind, and they always seem to hold up much better than the expert warnings would have you believe.
The is a helluva lot better option than the $33,000 bid we just got! Thanks! You have another new subscriber!
Contractors are getting ridiculous
@@davidr6865as a tradesman; it ain’t just them. It’s industry/ economic costs. We (the workers) have to charge more to make more on jobs to make more profit to cover overhead as well as pay ourselves. If our suppliers raise costs, so do we. It’s not personal or even likable and it doesn’t even mean we make more money necessarily. It’s business unfortunately. Nothing is cheap anymore. Contractors are just the “trigger pullers” in the public’s eyes. Doesn’t make them the problem though. They like us, doing their job. Hard times for everyone.
You could also use a hand grinder to create a milled edge around the perimeter, creating a smooth, flush join.
what kind of disk would be used on the grinder?
Great video! You have a new subscriber! This is precisely what I was looking for. I recently bought a walk-up ice cream business that has about a 2" depression in front of the order window. Our asphalt lot will be replaced next season, but this is a great option for a temporary fix. Most of what I was seeing online was to cut it out & patch it, but that's far more work & expense than it is worth for my situation.
Hi, that patch did a good job and lasted well, but it did compress over time. Here is another product that worked very well. ua-cam.com/video/-rZfIBX0igk/v-deo.html

Thank you, thank you. I will try this. We had a place on the edge of the driveway broken up when the neighbors had a large tree cut down and fell on it. Since it's on the edge, I think I will build a small form on the edge and fill inside. Thanks again; I had no idea where to start.
Let me know how it goes.
Could my driveway's deep bowl with the asphalt surface still intact (apparently caused by the removal of a large old tree nearby) be partially filled with heavy crushed stone gravel (cheaper than the asphalt patch product) first? The surface is still fine, so leveling the driveway is the only actual need.

Thank you for letting me know that it takes three weeks for the repair to be ready to be resurfaced. I had someone repair and refinish my small driveway. He did not repair any cracks and the asphalt repair looks like patchwork. He did not refinish it at all. It looks like a child did it. I am going to repair the cracks and I will use crack filler on the asphalt repair myself, and I will refinish the entire driveway with another coat. Weeds are already coming through the driveway cracks after two weeks. I paid $1000 for a $300 job. It took me hours to figure out how and when to refinish a driveway after asphalt driveway repair. Once I do all that and I fill in the cracks, then maybe it will look like a $1000 job.
Driveway sealer makes a patch not want to stick and peal off in shot order. use a propane torch to heat up the area and burn off some seal coat then slap on a patch while it's good and hot.

Think you're supposed to tamper in-between filling it up. Pour a little, tamper...etc, until filled completely. At least every patch I've had to use calls for that.
In Byron Bay NSW Australia the council workers walk past a pot hole throw some asphalt in it, no cleaning, not packing down, no nothing and move on to the next one! Their on a massive contract and the last thing they want is to fix the roads!!

Thanks you told me what product to use but not where to buy it
if its not the same density or let say "ingredients" , will it look too obvious or its gonna fairly good ? ( well , in worst case you just seal the whole driveway as well)
My neighbour next door did that to his driveway, he probably filled 12+ holes like that… at the end his driveway looked like a mine field , with black spots all over the place… sure holes and bumps were filled but it was so ugly that he decided to remove all the asphalt redo his driveway completely…. New driveway looks so much better
I have a 2x 12’ trench to repair. I originally priced it for cold patch, also thought it was going to be 6” wide, but my laborer cut it wider. I’ve never done asphalt before and hot patch is $2900 from paver. What are my chances of pulling this off cold ?
Will try the plywood and truck, thank you
+Greg Brooks Let me know how it works.
Check out our new home improvement book for more tips. It is free on Amazon Sept 1 to Sept 5. www.amazon.com/dp/B013YR9UOC
FYI: The sheet of plywood will probably run you more than the $10 tamper rental.
Using the crack repair is a good tip. Most skip that step if their sealing as well. But getting something in those cracks first, is a good idea. (that's what she said).
I really wanted to say "getting something around the edge first, is a good idea"... But then the lame joke does not work.
also if you can't find tack oil or an asphalt plant near you ..Heres a suggestion..That CRACKFILLE R you used at the end of patching..you can use as tack oil..you need to dilute it and it will glue down coldpatch alot better than just stuffing hole w patch alone

5 years later... How did it hold up?
TLOYA1 still holding strong 🤜🏻💥
Looks good to me.
So, potholes happen due to moisture and temperature changes
The moisture with freeze and thaw and move closer to the surface each time causing expansion and compression weakining the bond between bitumen and stone causing cracks in the pavement.
Best thing to do with this stuff instead of tamping is follow his steps but dry the hole with a propane torch (make sure the surface is around 30 degrees celsius) fill the hole for every foot wide you want about 2 inches vertical clearance and smack it with a flat shovel. Over time, it will sink. But reapply and you'll never really have to worry about pot holes too much.
The asphalt sunk because there is a void under the slab. Should have dug it out, repack it with dirty and rock, then out the fresh asphalt
not worth it!
@@MrEeeaddict So, you want to patch it every year? To save time?
I love it. Is really efficient.
No ground prep? Just sweep?
Hi there thank you for the video.
I have a big question here. What if my drive way has a mini slope to it? Would the method still be the same as yours generally speaking? Appreciate it thank you.
Hi, if you are filling a pothole just get it flush with the slope of the driveway.
I see alot of comments of people saying COLD PATCH wont last and its no good .And i disagree to a point..If you're applying it for a tiny sunken area like the one on your video THEN i agree with everyone who states its crappy and wont last.If you applied. TACK OIL(glue)underneath cold patch it would work better..But an even better way is tack oil.put down cold patch heat the cold patch with torch rake it then compact it ..And what do you know.brand NEW SKIN PATCH
If the hole is very deep could use gravel as a foundation? Anybody?
Thanks, and I wonder, would standing on the tamper add more compaction?
Hi, I think slamming the tamper probably creates a little more force to compact it.

exactly the video i was looking for!!! thanks! did this last?
This is not going to last. But that doesn't necessarily make it a bad patch. The idea is that it's decent and it's cheap. When it fails, you patch it again.
Mark Roberts are you the one who did the work ?
@@OffYourBackBJJ No, I've just used this stuff before. I'm not an expert by any means though.

Great instructional video what is your opinion I had my driveway repair but this is what they did they first put down Layex Lite Airport Grade sealer repair yesterday Then they tried to play a game on repairing it ! “ how well do you think the cold patch from Home Depot well adhere if the driveway was seal costed first ? “ we greatly appreciate your thoughts !
Hi, it depends on how the patch was applied and how well it fits into the hole, but it should hold up well. I would cover the patch with a coat of the asphalt sealer once it has hardened.

Best way to do it is get a bucket of black roof tar get a small 2 inch roller roll the edges with that then put your asphalt patch in rake it out smooth then sand it down the compact it really good then seal cost it and it was last for a very long time trust me
no it dosnt....

Would a large weed burner make a much better bond? I've seen heat make it so you can take your old asphalt to a new top surface.

Cold patch is terrible, it is best to use hot asphalt, and believe it or not, it's somewhat easy to make your own
Thanks for the video, very instructive. But I have a question to ask. My driveway got severely damaged due some gas leaks from my car, and its been a really good while. now you can see the gas, the oily surface. What do you recommend that I should do to repair that damaged area? and its pretty big, its a damage about 3ft by 4ft give or take. Im renting and I know that my landlord will pissed, so I would like to try to repair it.. So have any good and low costing suggestions?
Degease the area and pressure wash it. Then make sure area is dry. Get you a 5 gallon bucket of drive way sealer or any size bucket depending on your driveway. You will need to seal the entire driveway so that it is not visible. You can get a push broom and spread it on the driveway or they sell mops to do the job.
Get a torch it will reheat the asphalt and add a little cold mix it in the old and tamp it
I'll give a whirl and see how this works, Thanks
Let me know what you think.
Patching like that won't last very long. You are supposed to have a clean vertical edge otherwise the cold patch will pus out of the hole and the edges are too thin to cure into anything worthwhile.
