As a mother of two grown children (they are perfect, of course) and a grandmother of two (they are even more perfect), I am so happy to see women grow to the point where they see children as optional, not necessary. I know many women who had children because they felt obligated. They just followed the culture...and never thought they had an option. I am a woman who supports women doing what's best for them. Live your own truth.

I absolutely love listening to my two favorite women: Marie Forleo and Liz Gilbert. Thank you, Marie, for consistently hosting the best conversations with inspiring people. Liz, I’ve read all your books, and Big Magic is one I return to again and again. Marie, your mantra, "Everything is figureoutable," has become a lifeline for me-I repeat it every time I face an obstacle, and it truly feels like magic. Writing every morning brings clarity, and my journal, which I’ve titled My Morning Coffee with Kyle-named after my son who passed away-has been a source of healing. In fact, two of my books were born from those morning reflections. Thank you both for empowering so many women, including me, to keep moving forward and believing in what's possible.

This was such a wholesome conversation from many different angles. I like how she doesn't conform to beauty standards because I also don't. I have been shaving my hair for the last 10 years and the statement from women complimenting me and then mentioning their weird shaped head is so true/familiar - I hear it all the time. I am 56 years and look like I am in 40's only because of my healthy habits not trying too hard to stay young.
I don't let my phone have control over me, in particular, social media.

"now that I've caught up with myself..." THAT statement packs a punch. Love seeing these two ladies discussing the big hairy audacious subjects of life. I relate so much to having a body that cannot physically live a lie. I once had a job so bad that for a whole month I could literally barely breathe -- it was like I was slurping air from a straw. Could not figure out what it was. I deep-cleaned for mold, got an expensive air purifier, took allergy meds even though I didn't know what it could, elimination diet to feel out for allergies. Nothing worked. Until I went to the doctor with heart palpitations and they said it was just anxiety and there's some pills they could prescribe for that. But I knew that anxiety wasn't out of nowhere -- I dreaded dealing with certain coworkers every day. That night I was like, am I really gonna go on medication just to keep dealing with these a-holes? No. As soon as I made the decision to quit, all the breathing problems instantly stopped. It really was like my body was gonna choke me from the inside if I didn't quit and move onto the next chapter. (Which was a really fulfilling creative dream!)

I hear ya. I once had a job where I started to go to therapy once a week just to survive the gaslighting and toxicity. Not only were others being abusive, but I hadn’t been taking adequate care of myself. I wasn’t until it was all in the rear view mirror that I realized I could have, and should have, just quit.

You may want different things at different times in your life but the hardest thing is sometimes you don't realize what you want or even need till lator on in life. E.g A friend of mine worked real hard for 20 years and loved what he did and set himself up financially but he now says he wished he had kids earlier on in his life and had spent more time with his wife and family members. So yes sometimes you do things that feel right at the time to you but lator you may/do chamge as you grow. Never regret anything cause sometimes you dont know, what you dont know. I think ultimately nothing else is more important than the connection you have with yourself and with others especially with those close to you.❤

Great discussion, I love Liz Gilbert and of course Marie... and I think there are so many women who will benefit from this, however I do have to say that while I also felt that dread around having children, and I hated the baby and toddler phase, they are teenagers now and I absolutely LOVE them. I think this conversation would benefit from looking at the fact that "a baby" is a temporary thing. I am 52 now and my son and daughter are remarkable young people that I love to be with. So perhaps we need to talk about whether we are just baby-averse or whether we really do not want to raise a new generation of adults.

Love what Liz says about her digital Sabbath.
I LOVE it when I forget my phone, don't check it for hours and hours, and take days away from not only my phone but also my computer, the TV, all media, etc. It's AMAZING - and I've learned that I need more days like this in my life.
And, of course her talk about having/not having kids. Prior to getting married, I said I *didn't* want to have kids. Like, it was so expected of me (for all the reasons Liz mentioned) and I found that to be utterly repugnant. Then, around age 34, my clock started ticking (biological). Yet, every time I considered having kids with my former spouse, I would fly into utter panic and terror - that to have kids would NOT be the wise thing. I did this for years before I left the relationship. Sometimes I think if I'd been with the "right" person, maybe the outcome would have been different. Alas, am 44 and having kids is no longer an option for me. AND I'm happier and healthier than I've EVER been (and, have more money than when I was married...)

When someone states something as "fact" I get super interested (I have a grad degree in Public Policy). Marie, are you able to ask Liz for her data or source that supports the things she claimed as Fact regarding unmarried and childless women? Especially the idea that married mothers are more likely to die by suicide? That's serious stuff and important to understand to better support mothers! And that they have a shorter life expectancy?

    • @HollySchuyler

@@Satya2btrue Looks like he admitted he interpreted the data wrong. I don't think there's any one way better than the other. I'll never support someone staying in a relationship that is unhappy. Same for kids, not for everybody, LOL. They definitely cost a lot. But there's not really any good data on this stuff as far as I can tell. Except it did show that motherhood had a protective effect on suicide ideation. But it's hard to interpret data and it's not something you can do a double blind study on.

We don‘t really know how live authentically when we‘re young.. no one does! A newly grad in Highschool doesn’t know what course to take.. a newly college grad, doesn‘t know which direction to take.. until we experience all the bullshits first, we don‘t really know what our souls really need. It is longing for something .. since birth but we have to go thru processing until something unexpected comes our way.

I always feel Elizabeth's journey or revelation coincides with where I am in my life! Eat Pray Love, was born just around the time I really wanted out of my long term toxic relationship and eventually it did and I took off to Europe to explore and hang with vecinos, while I learned the culture! Today, 2024 I am done with what I've kept around me. Relationships that I helped created based on pain & childhood traumas. It's all coming to the light! I know I need to be done with these relationships! I also am fully aware and present on what my triggers are and things about myself that I wouldn't accept in someone else. I am working on! But, for me! BC when we do the work everyone else gets to enjoy it!! it becomes a positive domino effect! Today, I am so proud of the woman I am! When you live your life for you! Honestly, you become a mirror to others! Some are just not ready to do the work & face their shadows! So therefore they will knock you and discredit you every chance they get! I am done with those people!!! Thanks Liz!!! Love the shaved look!!

8:41 My body has not been true to me. I've just learned this. However, there are therapies I'm doing that are changing this. For example, hyper-vigilance causes a fight-or-flight response when none is needed. It's incredibly freeing to "teach" my body to respond in a more natural way.

Liz, I love you with all my heart. Your voice calms me down. Your eyes are full of joy, they look like they can smile. I talk to God too. You’ve helped me learn that God always answers except when you ask “why?”
I started to ask God for guidance, instructions, the how, the when, the what. God always answers these questions. Thank you thank you thank you!
Also you helped me understand a part of my “shadow” (Carl Jung). I am a gay man, who has always tried to be a good person and the idea of being a bad person has been unbearable. My feminine side. So many great points! I loved the parts about channeling and being childfree and the hair topic was a nice surprise. Just perfect!
As a fellow buzzcut woman, I so get Elizabeth’s enthusiasm for it! It’s so empowering and freeing (time and money wise), especially if you’re not one to enjoy styling it. No anxiety about your hair looking unwashed or unstyled when you come across people you didn’t expect to meet or if you make spontaneous plans/ video calls for work.

"...and now that I approach it I find that I cannot do it..." If I had only practiced this when I was in my 20s. No regrets of course, but if you are in your 20s watching this, try it out. Marie, this is a topic that could be expanded on. You have videos about quitting, but I don't recall an episode about breaking promises and maintaining integrity. Or even recovering integrity after breaking a promise.

    Takeaways:
    1. “Pay yourself first. Give everyone else your garbage hours.”
    .
    2. Just because someone WANTS a response from you doesn’t mean they get one.”
    .
    3. My solitude time is most valuable to me.
    .
    4. Claim the entitlement that the men have. I can complain or I can step into the space that men own.
    .
    5. I’m just going to go full Hag-Life.
    .
    6. I poured a great deal of myself into people and called it love.
    .
    7. “Living Financial Amends” I’m making to myself for the decades that I believed I was not allowed to keep what I earned.
    .
    8. Get greedy with my time.
